[OpsLens] A mentally unstable man, later identified as James Ray Smith, walks into REI’s flagship store adjacent Interstate-5 in downtown Seattle. He removes an ice ax typically used by mountain climbers to penetrate deep into the snow as they ascent steep slopes.
As the man tries to leave REI without paying for the item, he threatens a store security employee with the ax and then leaves the store. Smith had just turned a probable misdemeanor shoplift into a felony armed robbery. Security calls the police. Seattle Police Department (SPD) cops arrive and confront the man outside the store. They demand he put down the ice ax. Instead, he refuses to comply, threatens officers with the ax, then turns and walks away.
Officers follow him for several blocks, shouting for him to drop the deadly weapon. He continues to refuse their orders and walks on. Another officer, Nick Guzley, arrives and joins officers following the man, demanding he drop the ax.
Eventually, the officers close-in on the man in a narrow, enclosed-on-two-sides walkway. They continue to order Smith to drop the ice ax, but he continues to be non-compliant. At one point, Officer Guzley sees his chance as the suspect turns away from them.
[All Africa] Kenya is set to make history this Friday if all goes as planned to deploy its first locally made satellite into space.
The Nano-satellite that was developed by students and researchers of the University of Nairobi in partnership with Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) was handed over to the JAXA Tsukuba Space Center in January to prepare for its deployment.
UoN director of corporate affairs John Orindi said a delegation, led by Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed, would witness the event in Japan.
Known as the First Kenya University Nano Satellite-Precursor Flight (1KUNS-PF), it will be the first CubeSat selected to be deployed from Kibo, which is the Japanese Experiment Module of the International Space Station (ISS), according to the university.
"The deployment ceremony will be done from Kibo Space Centre on May 11, 2018 at about 1pm Kenyan time. The Cabinet Secretary, Ambassador Amina Mohammed, will lead a powerful delegation comprising of government officials and university researchers to witness the event live," he said.
More details about the preparations will be disclosed later today at a media briefing which will also be attended by the JAXA astronauts via video link from Japan.
According to the UoN, the 10 centimetre cube satellite (CubeSat) was developed under the KiboCube programme run by the United Nations ...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society... Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and JAXA.

That should be a safe enough distance from a potentially catastrophic launch failure.

TW, saw that movie years ago in a theater with a friend who had a taste for b rated comedy. But "The Gods Must Be Crazy" was one of the funniest movies I have ever seen for what he called a B-rated movie.
[All Africa] Former president Bob Muggsy Mugabe Nonagenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case. Dumped in November 2017 when the Missus decided she wanted to be president, and opposed heer might against Crocodile Mnangawa Important safety tip: If your opponent goes by the name Crocodile andf your title is Shopper in Chief let him win.... has been holding secret meetings with a prominent lawyer amid indications the opposition National Patriotic Front (NPF) wants the 40-year-old businessman to challenge President Emmerson Mnangagwa in elections due in two months.
Mugabe has met Farai Mutamangira to discuss the leadership of the NPF, currently led by former Cabinet minister retired brigadier general Ambrose Mutinhiri, who is said to be on his way out, impeccable sources said yesterday.
Mutinhiri was announced as the NPF leader in March after holding a meeting with Mugabe, but sources say he has fallen out of favour with the party's structures after he failed to "assert his authority".
The former Zipra commander has allegedly failed to attend NPF meetings.
Mutamangira has already held several meetings with the party's founding stakeholders, the sources said.
He is said to be the legal brains behind the party that is poised to threaten Mnangagwa's support base, especially in the rural areas.
NPF sources said Mutinhiri had been "a big disappointment" and Mutamangira's appointment was being done to save the party linked to a former Zanu PF faction known as G40.
"He's a ghost president who's never been seen or heard from," said a source.
"The biggest question in the NPF is; where is Mutinhiri?
"We only read about him and saw his pictures with [former] president Mugabe in the newspapers. He never attends meetings."
Mutinhiri was not reachable for comment yesterday, but his backers said his absence is related to an alleged power struggle between him and former Local Government minister and G40 kingpin, Saviour Kasukuwere.
Kasukuwere was accused of trying to position himself to take over from Mutinhiri.
Mutamangira and party spokesperson Jealousy Mawarire were not reachable for comment yesterday.
Mutamangira is a prominent corporate, investment and mining lawyer.
He taught law at the University of Zim-bob-we and recently completed a high profile executive education programme with the Kennedy School at Harvard University.
He is the chairman of FastJet, a budget airline registered in the country.

"The girl has suffered 70 percent first-degree burns. There is a chance that she will survive," Shailendra Barnwal, police superintendent of Pakur district, told AFP.
Police have placed in durance vile Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un! a 19-year-old man who lives in the same neighbourhood as the latest victim.
"He poured kerosene on the girl and set her on fire," Barnwal said.

Maybe have this guy do 200 situps as punishment instead of 100 like the last guy?
[DAWN] A female religious teacher in Bloody Karachi ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... allegedly killed her student and did away with himself after the student's family turned down a marriage proposal from the tutor's brother.
The incident occurred in the North Nazimabad area of the metropolis on Monday.
Nasreen Khalid, 24, used to teach Koran to a teenage girl living in Block-H of the locality.
On Monday evening, the tutor reached the girl’s residence and allegedly opened fire on her before shooting herself, police said.
Police said that the religious tutor had reportedly sought the hand of the girl for her brother, which was refused by the girl’s parents.
Three days ago, the girl was engaged to someone else, which ostensibly infuriated the religious tutor, police added.

America was first, Guatemala was second, and Paraguay looks like a trend.
[IsraelTimes] Outgoing and incoming presidents of South American state to attend inauguration later this month.
The US will open its embassy in its current consulate in the capital’s Arnona neighborhood on May 14. A large US delegation, headed by US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, is expected to attend the event.
Two days later, Guatemala will inaugurate its new embassy in Jerusalem’s Malha Technological Park, in the presence of President Jimmy Morales.
Last month, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at least half a dozen countries are considering moving their embassies to Jerusalem, and pledged "preferential treatment" to the first 10 countries to do so.

[NoPasaran] The crux of the "scandal" is not the outrage of several feminists and other activists (male and female alike) over two things ‐ 1) the fact that they (especially some of the ladies!) were fooled, and 2) because of some fiddly-duddly judge, a 70-year-old who had the gall to suggest that married men (and women) are more likely to be in a stable relationship.
The crux is that all women, whatever their political leanings (and whatever their vocal protests over toxic masculinity), go for alpha males.
Police officers infiltrated a number of environmental and animal rights protest movements, and under the guise of fellow travellerdom, their alpha maleness apparently still shone through, as girls (aka "victims" of "professionally trained liars") went to bed with them and even ended up married to, and/or having children with, some of them!
Doesn't anyone know that (at least) half the male attendees in a protest march (without being undercover policemen, natch) have not much interest ‐ alright, they may have a degree of sympathy ‐ in whatever the object of the demonstration is and are really there only, or mainly, to meet a girl and get laid?!
Bank of America is preparing to provide critical financing to Remington Outdoor, which makes assault-type rifles, just weeks after the bank said it would stop financing "military-style" firearms for civilians. Hope some a-Hole lost their job
BofA is contributing $43.2 million to a $193 million lending package funded by seven banks, according to court documents, which will help put Remington back on stable footing as it emerges from bankruptcy later this month into an uncertain environment for gun makers.
The package replaces a similar credit facility the banks committed to providing Remington. Both were agreed to in late March, before BofA changed its policy to stop financing companies that make military-style guns for civilian use. "we're rethinking our virtue signalling"
Anne Finucane, BofA's vice chair, said in April that the bank had decided on its pledge to help reduce mass shootings, saying in an interview with Bloomberg TV that "it is not our intent to underwrite or finance military-style firearms on a go-forward basis."
The comment came weeks after the Parkland school shooting triggered a new movement for gun control.

Dear NY Post - please describe in detail what an 'assault rifle' is.

Did the executive who made the decision go to the same 'private' parties as ex-NY AG Eric Schneiderman? Decided that it was time to stop being controversial and hide from the spotlights for a bit?

[PJMedia] A new study published in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Counseling warns that boys as young as 14-years-old suffer psychological problems from "hegemonic masculinity" and its derivative, "toxic masculinity."
Vincent Marasco, a former professor who now works as a mental health counselor, argued in a recently published article that mental health professionals should be cognizant of hegemonic masculinity since it can "influence the counseling relationship."
"Counselors working with adolescent boys need to take into consideration these social influences, their impact on the counseling relationship, and the unique ways adolescent boys perform masculinity," writes Marasco. Yea, well, perfessor - I think some father should show you that masculinity is all about. Of course, a proper father wouldn't let one of you Witch smellers near his kid.
[theconservativetreehouse]Senior administration officials are preparing to brief the media on a congressional “recission request” notification:
“Today, senior administration officials will hold a background briefing to preview the Presidents historic rescission request to Congress. The special message to Congress will be delivered Tuesday, May 8, 2018. The briefing will be conducted via conference call at 6:00PM EDT tonight. The information will be embargoed until 9:00PM EDT this evening.” (LINK)
In essence the administration is preparing to enter into a spending discussion with congress. The White House is actually trying to eliminate unnecessary federal spending. FULLSTOP. Yes, that’s what happens when a businessman, committed to financial stewardship, takes over as executive and reviews spending.
The basic point of “recission” is simple. The Omnibus spending bill contained too much unneeded spending on non-essential budgetary items. A Very Stable Genius President approved the Omnibus to gain the needed financing for the military.
With the military shored-up, the sketchy pork hidden inside the Omnibus needs to be addressed while deconstructing the deep state apparatus. So,…. the White House is talking with congress about NOT spending the appropriations.

He has a plan here. As the dems line up for reelection, Trump will plaster all over the media that incumbents pork and use it against them as being a bad steward of US tax dollars.
