[DAWN] Attacks in two neighbouring provinces in Afghanistan killed at least five coppers, Afghan officials said on Tuesday, while a sixth policeman died in a gunbattle with the Taliban ...the Pashtun equivalent of men... in another province.
In western Herat ...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns... province, two coppers died in a roadside kabooming while in neighbouring Farah province, three were killed when a bombing targeted their checkpoint.
No one immediately grabbed credit for the attacks but officials in both provinces blamed the Taliban.
Insurgents have been active in both Herat and Farah as the Taliban stepped up their attacks against Afghan cops across the country this year.
Jelani Farhad, front man for the provincial governor in Herat, said that along with the two who died in the attack there, three other officers were maimed. The police were on a routine patrol in Ghoryan district when the bomb went kaboom! on Tuesday, he added.
In Farah province, where the three officers were killed, Mohammad Naser Mehri, front man for the provincial governor, said turbans attacked the checkpoint and triggered a gunbattle that lasted for two hours.

[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least eight snuffies of the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group’s offshoot, ISIS Khorsan, were killed in an Arclight airstrike by the US forces in eastern Nangarhar The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country.. province of Afghanistan.
The provincial police commandment in a statement said the Arclight airstrike was carried out in Nazian district of Nangarhar.
The statement further added that the snuffies were targeted in Spin Zhai area of Nazian late on Monday night.
Several weapons, ammunition, and explosives belonging to the terror group were also destroyed, the police commandment added.
The anti-government armed turban groups have not commented regarding the report so far.
Nangarhar is among the relatively calm provinces in eastern Afghanistan but the anti-government armed turban groups have recently increased their insurgency activities in some parts of the province during the recent years.
Operations led by the Afghan forces in coordination with the US forces based in Afghanistan are underway against the ISIS loyalists in this province.
The US forces stepped up Arclight airstrikes and operations against the terror group after they were granted a broader role by the former US administration.

At least 15 Taliban insurgents were killed in ongoing operations in eastern Laghman province, local officials confirmed on Tuesday.
In addition, seven others were wounded and another was arrested.
The operation was launched in Alishing district of the province on Monday to clear the area of insurgents, a spokesman for 201 Selab Military Corps, Sherin Aqa Faqiri said.
“The troops are receiving air support during the operation and it will continue until the area is cleared of all insurgents,” Faqiri said.
However, he did not provide more details about the operation.
The Taliban has not yet commented about the operation.
[Libya Herald] Sabratha hospital has issued an urgent call for trauma kits and blood as the fighting in the town continued for a tenth day, with at least 17 dead and 48 maimed since the violence began.
So pressed is the hospital that casualties are being sent elsewhere. A woman hit by shrapnel today in her kitchen was transferred to Zuwara for treatment
Thus far all mediation attempts by local elders have failed, with two uneasy truces quickly breaking down. The Libya Red Islamic Thingy has reportedly evacuated almost all the population from the old part of two where the fighting has become fiercest.
There are international concerns for the safety of the outstanding ruins of Sabratha’s ancient city. Pictures last week showed a shell hole in the monumental masonry of the theatre. Today UNESCO called for a ceasefire and appealed for this precious part of Libya’s archaeolgical heritage to be protected.
However a halt to the fighting has been rejected by the Anti-ISIS Operations Room (AIOR) which says it is battling jihadists in the form of the Amu Brigade, also known as the Brigade of the Martyr Anas al-Dabashi. This militia is effectively the same as the 48th Battalion, which the Presidency Council’ has said is part of its armed forces.
A normally reliable social media source said today that three migrant detention camps under the control of the Amu Brigade could not be reached. The source also said that while rivals fought in Sabratha, people-smugglers in Zuwara had stepped up their operations.

[Iran Press TV] Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has given the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) three days to hand over control of its airports if it seeks to avoid an international air embargo, a retaliatory move the Iraqi government says will take against the independence-seeking region in the wake of a highly controversial referendum.
The Iraqi premier made the remarks in a weekly presser in the capital Baghdad on Tuesday. He said international flights to and from the Kurdish region would be suspended in three days.
Last week, Baghdad called on all countries to stop direct flights to the international airports of Erbil, the capital city of the KRG, and Sulaymaniyah, another city in the Iraqi Kurdistan, but so far only Iran has put in place such an air embargo, halting direct flights to the region on Sunday.
Abadi added that Baghdad would not negotiate with the Kurdish authorities the results of the provocative plebiscite on the independence of the KRG, which is led by Massoud Barzani ... hereditary head of the Kurdish Democratic Party, maybe a little too close to the Medes and the Persians for most people's tastes... . The Iraqi prime minister said the whole nation would suffer from the repercussions of the "unconstitutional" move.
The contentious non-binding Monday vote, which had been announced by the KRG earlier in the year, was held in the region in open defiance of Baghdad and much to the consternation of the international community that warned it could most likely create more trouble in the already violence-weary Arab country, which is trying to emerge from years of a campaign of death and destruction by ISISTakfiri ...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed... terrorists.

Quite some time ago, I recall a discussion at the Burg about splitting Iraq into three independent countries: Suni, Shite and Kurd. Iraq's modern borders were made-up in 1920 when the Ottoman Empire was divided by treaty and Iraq was placed under the authority of the Brits. Maybe splitting Iraq into three countries is an idea to revisit again.

This will lead to the partition of Syria, Turkey, and Iran. Of course Iran would immediately join in an air embargo. Watch for incursions by the Turks, and unrest North of that border.

[DAWN] A Paleostinian shot up Israeli security personnel at the entrance to a West Bank settlement on Tuesday, killing three and wounding another before being rubbed out, police said.
"A terrorist who arrived at the rear gate of Har Adar along with Paleostinian labourers entering the settlement.... pulled out a weapon and shot up the force at the site," police said.
"Three Israelis were killed in the attack, another was maimed and the terrorist was neutralised." Police later said the Paleostinian had died of his wounds.
The shooter was identified by police as a 37-year-old man from Beit Surik, a Paleostinian village near Har Adar, who carried a work permit for the settlement.
As he approached the checkpoint at the entrance to Har Adar, he aroused the suspicion of security forces, who ordered him to halt, police said.
He then pulled out a pistol and opened fire on border police and civilian security guards, before being shot. The maimed Israeli was admitted to Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem at death's door, the hospital said.
The incident, at a settlement northwest of Jerusalem that lies near several Paleostinian villages, comes nearly two years after a wave of unrest broke out.
The violence had greatly subsided in recent months.

[PhilStar] Philippine security forces have thwarted possible future attacks with the arrest of three suspected Abu Sayyaf bomb experts in Zamboanga City. One of those arrested, identified as Omar Askali, alias Ayub, is said to be a follower of Basilan-based Abu Sayyaf leader Furuji Indama, according to Col. Leonel Nicolas, chief of Joint Task Force Zamboanga.
Askali was nabbed by a joint police and military team on Saturday morning. Follow-up operations conducted by the same team resulted in the arrest of Mukaram Sapie, alias Mukram, and a certain Shayif, in Barangay Taluksangay. The two suspects were allegedly on a mission to carry out bombings on orders of Indama.
Nicolas said, “Intelligence reports showed the group would bomb public places in the city three days from now,” adding Askali is one of Indama's most trusted men. Nicolas said they are tracking down two improvised explosive devices set to be planted in the city, based on information provided by Askali.
Meanwhile, authorities prevented another attempt to bomb selected targets in North Cotabato with the arrest of a suspected leader of the outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters in Midsayap town yesterday.
Muslimin Ladtugan, alias Commander Mus, was arrested at his hideout in Barangay Nabalawag by police and military troopers. The military has received reports that Ladtugan’s group has been plotting to avenge the death of 27 BIFF militants killed in clashes with Moro Islamic Liberation Front fighters.

[The Nation] Thai security forces are seeking a man on the run after he was allegedly involved in an attack in Pattani's Sai Buri district that killed four soldiers and hurt several others on Friday.
Military spokesman Piyawat Nakwanich said that two suspects who worked as construction workers had already been detained over the attack. Piyawat did not reveal the identity of the third suspect but said the authorities had forensic evidence from the scene that could link the person to the attack.
The powerful bomb ripped apart the soldiers' pickup truck as they were on patrol in Tambon Taping. Four soldiers who were sitting in the cargo bed were killed, while five others who were on foot near the vehicle survived.
The explosives were hidden in water drainage pipes at a construction site, so workers were questioned for possible involvement.
MARAWI CITY, Philippines (Reuters) - With a grimace, Brigadier General Melquiades Ordiales of the Philippines 1st Marine Brigade recounted the painful gains made against Islamist militants in Marawi City.
“It took us one week from this point to that point, to cross that street,” he said, casting his eyes to the other side of a two-lane road in the heart of the southern Philippines city, lined by three-storey buildings shattered by air strikes and the remaining walls riddled with bullet holes.
“It was really very, very tough.”
The grinding urban warfare that has destroyed much of the grandly named Sultan Omar Dianalan Boulevard shows just how much of a threat Islamic State is to the Philippines and potentially other countries in the Southeast Asian region.
But when the fighting started, Philippine authorities were unfazed.
After the Islamic State-backed militants took over large parts of picturesque, lakeside Marawi in May, the country’s defense minister, Delfin Lorenzana, predicted the entire conflict would be over in one week.
Now, after four months of intense aerial bombardment and house-by-house battles, Philippine commanders believe they are in the final stages of the operation to oust the rebels from the city.
In the past two weeks, military officials say they have conquered three militant bastions, including a mosque, and restricted about 60 remaining guerrillas to about 10 devastated city blocks in the business district. Patrols have been increased on the lake to prevent the supply of armaments and recruits to the holed-up militants.

[Iran Press TV] Russian Tupolev Tu-95 strategic bombers have fired a barrage of cruise missiles at the positions of ISISTakfiri ...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed... terrorist group in Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib and the eastern province of Dayr al-Zawr, inflicting heavy losses on the terrorists.
Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said on Tuesday that the warplanes took off from Engels airbase, located 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) east of Russia’s major port city of Saratov, flew over territory of Iran and Iraq and launched Kh-101 air-to-surface cruise missiles at designated targets.
"The sudden strikes destroyed a number of terrorist command posts, fortifications, military hardware as well as ammunition depots," Konashenkov said in a statement.
The senior Russian military official went on to say that all destroyed targets were far away from residential areas, the positions of the US-backed gunnies from the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces, and US troops.

Is this a technology escalation by the Russians?
The Syrian Army units foiled a terrorist attack with a vehicle rigged with explosives on one of the military posts in Hwaijet Saqr, inflicting heavy losses upon ISIL terrorists in different areas in Deir Ezzor City and its countryside.
SANA reporter said that army units engaged in violent clashes with ISIL terrorists in the area of Hwaijet Saqr to the east of Deir Ezzor City, killing scores of terrorists and destroying a car rigged with explosives before reaching on of the military posts, in addition to seizing another vehicle rigged with explosives.
The reporter added that the army’s operations coincided with firing rockets and carrying out intensive raids by the Syrian Air Force on the fortifications and positions of ISIL terrorists in Hatla, al-Husseiniyia and Hwaijet Saqr, and the neighborhoods of al-Hwaiqa, Kanamat, Khasarat, al-Rushdiyia, al-Ardi and al-Orfi, killing a number of terrorists and destroying their fortifications.
