[DAWN] A dual Pakistani and British citizen has been sentenced to six years in a US federal court for selling false remedies for incurable diseases.
Mustafa Hasan Arif, 37, collected more than $12.8 million by selling his drugs to more than 100,000 victims around the globe. He had established more than 1,500 websites to hawk his merchandise of false hopes that he said could cure many incurable diseases, such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and emphysema.
Prosecutors said Arif used falsified cure rates, false clinical research and fabricated testimonials to persuade his victims to buy the drugs. In October 2016, Arif pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud. More than 93,000 people purchased his drugs in the United States alone.
Arif told the court that he provided his customers with herbal remedies that he truly believes in, but the judge said he showed little remorse for his actions.

[PIX11] A 12-year-old boy is in jug for allegedly punching an 80-year-old woman in the face and trying to set her on fire during an unprovoked attack outside her Brooklyn home, police said Wednesday.
The child approached the woman as she sat in front of her West Seventh Street home in Gravesend on Saturday, according to police.
He then allegedly punched her in the face with a closed fist, used a metal rod on her, and tried to light her coat on fire as she sat outside her house.
The boy has since been taken into custody, and faces charges of assault and menacing, police said.
PIX11 obtained surveillance video of the boy taken inside a nearby Chinese-food restaurant. PIX11 has blurred his face because he is a minor.
The owner of China Restaurant Inc. on 86th Street described the child as a menace.
"He asked the customers for their money," said the owner. The boy on Saturday went on a spitting rampage before he stole $15 from the tip jar, he said.

It's the city's third consecutive year of population loss. Chicago's population fell by 8,638 residents between 2015 and 2016, to 2,704,958. The year before, it declined by 4,934.

Illinois' population fell by more than any other state in 2016, down 37,508 people, according to census data released in December.

[THESMOKINGGUN] A Florida man was found "covered from head to toe in pork fried rice and a red sauce" following an attack yesterday by his ex-girlfriend, according to cops who locked away Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please! the woman for domestic battery.
Responding to a disturbance at the China No. 1 restaurant in Vero Beach, a sheriff’s deputy discovered Brian Kusmer, 31, wearing his lunch. Kusmer said that he was waiting for his former girlfriend, Samantha Wilson, to drop off the couple’s eight-year-old son (whose custody they share).
When Wilson, 30, arrived at the restaurant, the duo argued about Wilson repeatedly keeping the child out of school, according to a police report. Kusmer told a cop that he asked Wilson to leave the restaurant after she got mad and began screaming at him.
Before departing, however, Wilson allegedly threw a plate of food on Kusmer, who later declined medical attention, but said "the sauce burned a little." Kusmer’s account of the incident was backed up by another customer.
During police questioning, Wilson reportedly copped to the pork fried rice battery. Wilson, police noted, said that she "never physically touched Kusmer she only threw the food at him."
Pictured above, Wilson was arrested for domestic battery, a misdemeanor, and booked into the county jail. She was subsequently released on her own recognizance and ordered to have no contact with Kusmer. Wilson’s rap sheet includes prior collars for criminal mischief, theft, negligence, and child abuse.

[TheIntercept] In April 2001, just months before the 9/11 attacks gripped the nation, a U.S. Navy spy plane flying a routine reconnaissance mission over the South China Sea was struck by a People’s Liberation Army fighter jet that veered aggressively close. The mid-air collision killed the Chinese pilot, crippled the Navy plane, and forced it to make an emergency landing at a Chinese airfield, touching off a tense international showdown for nearly two weeks while China refused to release the two-dozen American crew members and damaged aircraft.
For more than a decade, U.S. officials have refused to say what secrets China might have gleaned from the plane. Two years after the incident, journalists saw a redacted U.S. military report, which revealed that although crew members had jettisoned documents out an emergency hatch as they flew over the sea and had managed to destroy some signals-collection equipment before the plane fell into the hands of the Chinese, it was "highly probable" China had still obtained classified information from the plane. Attempts by journalists and academics to learn more over the years have been unsuccessful.
But now, a comprehensive Navy-NSA report completed three months after the collision, and included among documents obtained by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden in 2013, finally reveals extensive details about the incident, the actions crew members took to destroy equipment and data, and the secrets that were exposed to China -- which turned out to be substantial though not catastrophic. Long article.

[DAWN] Uzma, an Indian national who claimed she had been forced to marry a Pak man at gunpoint in Buner earlier in May, returned to her home country via the Wagah border on Thursday, a day after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) gave her permission to do so.
Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj took to Twitter to welcome the 22-year-old back to India.
"Welcome home India's daughter. I am sorry for all that you have gone through," Swaraj wrote.
Indian Deputy High Commissioner J P Singh saw Uzma off in Islamabad and she was escorted to Wagah border crossing with strict security.
Uzma had filed a petition in the IHC seeking repatriation to India on the grounds that her daughter from an earlier marriage was a thalassaemia patient and she needed to see her.

[Dhaka Tribune] India has cancelled plans to build nearly 14 gigawatts of coal-fired power stations, about the same as the total amount in the UK, with the price for solar electricity "free falling" to levels once considered impossible. Let us know how that works out for ya...
Analyst Tim Buckley said the shift away from the dirtiest fossil fuel and towards solar in India would have "profound" implications on global energy markets.
According to his article on the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis’s website, 13.7GW of planned coal power projects have been cancelled so far this month, in a stark indication of the pace of change.
In January last year, Finnish company Fortum agreed to generate electricity in Rajasthan with a record low tariff, or guaranteed price, of RS4.34 per kilowatt-hour.
Buckley, director of energy finance studies at the IEEFA, said that at the time analysts said this price was so low would never be repeated.
But, 16 months later, an auction for a 500-megawatt solar facility resulted in a tariff of just RS2.44, compared to the wholesale price charged by a major coal-power utility of RS3.2 rupees (about 31% higher).
"For the first time solar is cheaper than coal in India and the implications this has for transforming global energy markets is profound," Buckley said.

Not mentioned is India will have to build massive amounts of pumped hydro storage, which will cost more than the coal power stations, even if the solar were free.

A BIG Morton Salt Girl graphic is indeed warranted.
Fortum (the solar provider) will make buckets of money up front. When the competition is gone, they'll jack their rates to make more, collect until their costs are covered plus 1,000%, and then walk away (probably complaining about 'government interference' or something).

Probably some power play between groups of corrupt Indian bureaucrats for the largest share of the bribe money.
As to Fortum, a friend in the Petroleum Engineering field, once told me that the reason the Bhopal litigation never went anywhere (by Western lawfare standards) was that the Indian government wants a controlling 51%+ interest in any major projects -- so any future litigation would have the Indian government agreeing to sue itself for damages. Highly unlikely.
[AnNahar] The Moslem holy fasting month of Ramadan is due to begin Saturday in Soddy Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face... and the United Arab Emirates, religious authorities in both countries announced.
[AlAhram] Nearly 200 people have been locked away Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages! by federal agents in southern Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, as part of a five-day operation targeting immigrants colonists convicted of crimes or in the country illegally, officials said Thursday.
The crackdown, which ended Wednesday and was spearheaded by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), focused on people with prior criminal offenses including for drug trafficking, rape and domestic violence, authorities said.
"Operations like this are emblematic of the vital work ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers do every day, seeking to locate, arrest, and ultimately deport at-large convicted criminals and other immigration runaways who pose a threat to public safety," David Marin, the ERO director in Los Angeles, said in a statement.
"By taking these individuals off the streets and removing them from the country, we're making our communities safer for everyone," he added.
The raids took place amid a surge in such operations since President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... took office in January vowing to deport as many as three million undocumented immigrants colonists with criminal records.
A similar large-scale crackdown in February in at least half a dozen states netted hundreds of undocumented immigrants colonists including some without criminal records, prompting an uproar among rights groups.
Authorities said the latest crackdown led to the arrest of a 29-year-old Salvadoran national convicted of rape in California and a previously deported 51-year-old Mexican man who had been convicted of cocaine trafficking.
More than two dozen of those arrested also had been convicted of domestic violence and driving under the influence.
The suspects -- 177 men and 11 women -- included nationals from 11 countries.
The majority -- 146 -- are from Mexico while two are from Russia and one from Cambodia.
Most of the arrests took place in the Los Angeles area.
According to federal authorities, more than 41,000 people have been arrested by ICE since Trump signed an executive order in January strengthening immigration enforcement policies.
The number represents a 40 percent increase over the same period in 2016.
