UNSMIL calls for Benghazi ceasefire as fresh fighting flares in south of the city
There has been heavy clashes today between the Libyan army and militants in the Tika area, at the southern approach to Benghazi. Meanwhile the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called for a temporary ceasefire in the city to enable local humanitarian organisations provide for desperately-needed supplies of food and medical supplies to be delivered to the few remaining residents in Ganfouda and Gwarsha, the last remaining militant strongholds. IS forces at Mizdah surrounded, claims LNA amid continued fighting
Fighting between gunmen from the so-called Islamic State (IS) and units of the Libyan National Army south of Mizdah, on the Tripoli-Sebha road, has continued today for the fourth day. According to a source within the LNA, it now has the IS force of some 150 men surrounded.

The fighting started on Thursday when IS set up a roadblock some 60 kilometres south of Mizdah (itself 170 kilometres south of Tripoli). It then arrested around ten people travelling along the road. All were released apart from a traffic police official named as Major Amr Bakoush. He has not been heard of since. A colleague with him managed to escape, however.

The IS forces were then attacked by units from the LNA, mainly Zintanis and Wirshefana.

In the subsequent fighting some five LNA soldiers are reported to have been killed, two of them yesterday, both said to be Zintanis.

The LNA source reports that the army has helicopter support from Wattiya airbase. It is being used to provide details of IS positions and movement, but there have been no air strikes.

The checkpoint set up by IS is some 40 kilometres south of the junction with the road leading to Nisma and Bani Walid. IS units are said to have been active along it and in the surrounding area for the past few weeks.

On Wednesday, reports of the Mizdah incident became confused with a IS operation at another checkpoint, in this case near Abugrein, 140 kilometres south of Misrata. The area is the frontline between the Misratans and IS. The village of Abugrein is reported in IS hands but the checkpoint, some ten kilometres to the west, is controlled by the Misratans.

Following a largely ineffective airstrike from Misrata on Sirte, IS forces launched a revenge attack on the checkpoint, killing three guards. A fourth, who as seriously injured, subsequently succumbed to his wounds.

Pro-Hadi forces break Houthi ‘siege’ on Yemen’s Taiz
[AA.TR] Forces loyal to Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansur Hadi say they have partially broken a months-long ‘siege’ by the Shia Houthi murderous Moslem group on the southwestern city of Taiz.

"The siege of Taiz has been broken from the city’s southwest by the national army... along with popular resistance forces," the city’s pro-Hadi military council tweeted late Friday.

Taiz’s strategically important southwestern entrance -- which links it to the southern Lahij and Aden provinces -- had been one of three main city entrances held by the Houthis and allied forces loyal to former President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
The southwestern entrance was reportedly secured Friday by pro-Hadi forces following three days of fierce fighting with the Houthis and their allies.

Earlier Friday, pro-Hadi forces claimed to have scored other victories west of Taiz, where they said they had retaken several Houthi-held positions.

On Friday evening, Houthi

Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
murderous Moslems reportedly staged several attacks on the eastern side of Taiz -- where local witnesses reported hearing violent kabooms -- in hopes of offsetting losses sustained to the west of the city.

Al Arabiya sez 50 dead in Taiz battles so far

[AlArabiy] Clashes intensified on Friday between Shiite rebels and local fighters in the besieged city of Taiz, killing at least 45 fighters on both sides and six civilians over the past 24 hours.

The city has seen heavy fighting between rebels known as Houthis and local resistance units financed and armed by the Saudi-led coalition that is backing Yemen’s internationally recognized government.

The local fighters have been advancing and have taken control of Taiz’s western outskirts.

The medical officials said Friday that most of the 45 killed over the past 24 hours died in airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition. They also said that six civilians were killed in random shelling of residential areas. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

According to witnesses, Islamic militants who are fighting next to the local resistance have kidnapped a number of Houthi supporters and members of the ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s party in the city of Taiz after storming their houses and shops.

Al-Qaeda in Yemen has posted videos before for its operations in Taiz. The group, along with Salafis, has been fighting side-by-side with the local resistance fighters.

The Houthis have besieged Taiz, widely known as Yemen’s cultural center, for over a year now. Saudi-led coalition launched an extensive air campaign and send ground troops to roll back Houthis.

High heels were nowhere to be seen as models walked for half a mile, snaking around rows of gilded chairs to the sound of techno music.

"Women need to be ready to defend themselves ... in a world that is not that sweet," Lagerfeld, 82, told Reuters after the show. "It's not the bourgeois cocktail hat, the ladylike hat, this is another kind of hat, I wouldn't say aggressive, but more protective."

Canadian Charged with Trying to Join Terror Group
Another rube self-identifies. Was his name among the 22,000 recently reported?.
[AnNahar] Canadian authorities have charged a Quebec man for attempting to leave the country to take part in a terrorist group, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Friday.

Ismail Habib, 28, was also charged with making a false statement to obtain a passport, the RCMP added.

He faces 10 years in prison.

"This case clearly demonstrates that the RCMP and its partners are committed to investigating and prosecuting those who threaten Canada's national security," police Assistant Commissioner James Malizia said.

Habib, who has an Afghan father and a Canadian mother, was trying to reach Syria, where his wife and 5-year-old daughter have been living for a year, local media reported.

Habib was charged under Canada's terrorism act, which enables the authorities to bring charges against anyone suspected of participating in the activity of a terrorist group.

It also applies to cases in which a person "leaves or attempts to leave Canada."

In March last year, a 17-year-old was detained in the western province of Alberta. A month later, a girl and her companion, both 18, were indicted for attempting to leave the country to commit a terrorist act abroad, the RCMP said.

The two were enrolled in the same Montreal high school attended by five students from a group of seven second-generation immigrants colonists who boarded a flight bound for Istanbul and eventually Syria to join IS fighters, according to the authorities.

US Used Intel Frm Captured ISIS To Strike Two Chem Weapons Facilities
[Daily Caller] The Islamic State’s captured chemical weapons chief provided intelligence to U.S. military officials that allowed Operation Inherent Resolve forces to conduct air strikes against two ISIS chemical weapons factories, the Pentagon revealed in a press conference Friday.

Sleiman Daoud al-Afari, the head of the ISIS chemical weapons program, was captured by U.S. special operators near the northern Iraqi town of Tal Afar in February and held for two weeks before he was turned over to the Iraqi government. Operation Inherent Resolve spokesman U.S. Army Col. Steve Warren confirmed during a press briefing that two strikes on ISIS chemical weapons factories near the Iraqi city of Mosul on Sunday and Tuesday were due to information obtained from al-Afari.

ISIS chemical weapons capability in Mosul has been of some concern due to the fact that Mosul University is known to have chemistry equipment that could be utilized to produce chemical weapons.

Peshmerga shoot dead six ISIS suicide bombers west of Kirkuk

[Rudaw] A major suicide attack by Islamic State (ISIS) militants on Peshmerga defense lines south of Kirkuk was foiled Saturday morning, said the frontline commander.

“The militants were gunned down before they could detonate themselves,” commander Kamal Kirkuki told Rudaw.

Six ISIS suicide bombers attacked the Peshmerga base at around 3:30 am, whose bodies still lie there in the open field, said Kirkuki.

“The bodies of the suicide bombers were blown to pieces after they were shot,” he added. “If the Peshmerga had not killed the militants the attack would have caused serious casualties."

The frontline south and west of Kirkuk has experienced major confrontations between ISIS and Kurdish forces in the last two years. But the Peshmerga are well-prepared for such surprise attacks, said Kirkuki. He claimed that at least 6,000 ISIS militants have been killed on this front alone.

#1  It seems like the news out of Iraq and Syria has a lot more stories of significant ISIS losses than in the past. Propaganda? Or degraded ISIS capability? Or more high risk/desperate ISIS attacks? Or a combination of all three? Or just my imagination?

Iraq: Injury toll in Daesh toxic gas attack rises to 670
[AA.TR] The injury toll in a Daesh [Islamic State] suspected toxic attack south of Kirkuk has risen to 670, Iraqi Turkmen Front said in a statement Saturday.

A child also died in the incident, while out of the 670 people injured, seven are said to be at death's door, who were transferred to medical facilities in Baghdad, the statement added.

"This heinous action is a clear proof that this organization is targeting the presence of Turkmen in Iraqi territories," it said.

The front urged the central government and the international coalition forces to intervene "immediately and rapidly to liberate the Turkmen village of al-Bashir to avoid the risk of targeting the people in Taza Khurmatu, Turkmen area".

It also demanded from the "Iraqi Environment Directorate to act urgently and immediately in order to address the environmental pollution as a result of these chemical attacks".

Abdul Hadi Mohan, member of a health and environment committee at the Iraqi parliament, said Friday: "The first death [took place] as a result of the attack of Daesh [Islamic State] last Tuesday evening in the area of Taza Khurmatu, to the south of Kirkuk province, by missiles carrying toxic gases; it also maimed more than 400 people".

Torhan al-Mufti, higher coordination committee secretary in the Iraqi Council of Ministers, said Saturday that a delegation of Taza Khurmatu met Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and discussed the security situation of the area in the aftermath of the toxic gas attack.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Another Iranian commander killed in Syria
[Rudaw] Another commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) paramilitary was killed in Syria according to the Iranian press.

General Hassan Ali Shamsabadi was reportedly killed late on Wednesday while, according to an Iranian press report quoted by NOW Leb, undertaking an "advisory mission" in the war-torn country. A mere day after he had officially retired.

The report claimed he was defending Shiite shrines in Syria when killed. However the Syrian opposition say he was killed in fighting near Aleppo. An area where most of the 180+ Iranians to have died in Syria have been killed to date.

His death comes one monther after another IRGC commander, Brigadier General Mohsen Qaryajan, was killed in a similar mission in Syria.

Tehran has long insisted that it only sends its paramilitary soldiers to Syria in an advisory role. Not as combat troops.

al-Nusra troops battle it out with rebels in Idlib
ARA News

ERBIL – The U.S.-backed FSA-group ‘Division 13’ launched raids on the Al-Qaida-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra (Nusra Front) on Saturday after tensions between opposition supporters and Nusra in Idlib last Friday.

“Division 13 is a FSA group that is backed by Turkey and Saudi Arabia, and received U.S.-delivered TOW anti-tank rockets,” Nusra member Abu Saeed al-Holandi told ARA News in Idlib.

The TOW-rockets played a major role in expelling the Syrian government from the province of Idlib.

Nusra Front said it would do everything necessary to defend areas under its control in northern Syria, after being attacked by the moderate Free Syrian Army (FSA) group on Saturday.

Division 13 shares a presence with the Nusra Front in several areas in northern Syria.

“In an unexpected step, and in a difficult time in the blessed Syrian revolution, all were surprised by the faction ‘Division 13’ raiding the headquarters of Jabhat al-Nusra in the city of Maarat al-Numan,” said the Nusra front in an official statement.

“And they were not sufficed with that; rather they (as well) raided some of the houses of members of Jabhat al-Nusra in the city,” the Nusra front said.

“We don’t attack the FSA, and they fought the regime. The province of Idlib is almost completely liberated from the regime, apart from two small villages,” the Nusra fighter Abu Saeed al-Holandi told ARA News.

However, supporters of the FSA accuse the Nusra Front of attacking anti-regime protests, following the cessation of hostilities on 27 February.

“There is a lot of popular anger within the opposition over Jabhat al-Nusra’s aggressive activities toward more secular-oriented demonstrators, which has led to calls for action from within the moderate opposition for protesters to be protected from Jabhat al-Nusra,” said Nicholas Heras, a Washington-based Middle East researcher at the Centre for a New American Security.

“Division 13 is one of the most influential rebel groups in northern Syria and it has significant tensions with Jabhat al-Nusra over how to build governance in rebel-ruled areas,” he added.

Experts suspect that more clashes will erupt in the province of Aleppo between FSA groups and the Nusra Front.

“These clashes are the result of long-boiling anger within the armed opposition as a result of Jabhat al-Nusra trying to muscle into the moderate armed opposition’s turf, and from it trying to dominate civil society in rebel-ruled areas,” Heras told ARA News.

The Nusra front called on the FSA to stop the internal fighting.

“And we call upon all of the wise ones to rectify the situation to save the blood, and to correct the direction of the rifles of the Mujahideen,” Nusra said in the officially released statement.

But it will be difficult for the FSA to stop the fight with Nusra due to Western pressure on the FSA to push them to fight against Jihadist groups.

“The moderate rebels are under a lot of pressure to demonstrate that they can confront al-Qaeda and prevent it from entrenching its power in rebel-controlled Syria,” Heras added.

“The two have long been competing for influence there and in the surrounding areas. As long as the truce persists and demonstrations continue, clashes will continue,” Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi, research fellow at the Middle East Forum, told ARA News.

“There will be localized clashes, but not necessarily full-blown civil war. In Maarat al-Numan it’s easier to take on Nusra as Division 13 is stronger and there isn’t a Jaysh al-Fatah administration,” he added.
