[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least three school students bit the dust and eight others were maimed in a rocket attack by anti-government armed faceless myrmidons in southeastern Khost province ... across the border from Miranshah, within commuting distance of Haqqani hangouts such as Datta Khel and probably within sight of Mordor. The Ministry of Education (MoE) said the incident took place this morning in Bak district after a mortar round landed in a primary school.
A statement by MoE said two female students were among those killed in the attack, urging the Afghan security institutions to take immediate steps in identifying and trying those involved behind the incident.

[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A Canadian citizen who was kidnapped in late 2010 in Afghanistan has been released by its captors, it has been reported.
According to the Canadian media quoting the government officials, the 27-year-old Colin Rutherford was released with the mediation of Qatar ...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates... .
The Foreign Affairs Minister of Canada Stephene Dion on Monday confirmed Mr. Rutherfod was released five years after he went missing.
Mr. Dion in a statement said "I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Government of Qatar for its assistance in this matter."
The Talibs group in Afghanistan confirmed that Mr. Rutherdford has been kidnapped by their holy warriors, three months after he went missing while travelling as a tourist.
He was accused of espionage while travelling to Afghanistan. However, there's more than one way to stuff a chicken... the Canadian authorities at that time said Mr. Rutherford was a tourist in Afghanistan and was seeking to learn Pashto during his travels.
The circumstances surrounding his release have not been ascertained so far and there are no reports regarding the health condition of Mr. Rutherford.
According to the statement by the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Canada, Mr. Rutherford is still outside Canada. "we look forward to Mr. Rutherford being able to return to Canada and reunite with his family and loved ones."

Egypt has arrested a senior member of the banned Moslem Brüderbund group on suspicion of involvement in an attack on Israeli Arab tourists on Thursday at a hotel close to the Giza pyramids.
No one was hurt in the attack, during which more than a dozen individuals opened fire on the tourists with fireworks and birdshot, causing some damage to the hotel's facade and tour buses parked nearby.
Egyptian media reported Monday that security services had arrested Abed Al A'al Al Asiri, along with two of his sons and seven other suspects.
The tourists, who numbered roughly 40, were Israeli Arabs, mainly from the northern town of Umm al-Fahm.
According to initial reports, the shooters were part of a mob of 15 individuals that gathered outside the Three Pyramids Hotel. They were identified by Egyptian media as linked to the Moslem Brüderbund group. Early reports said they shot fireworks and rubber bullets at the hotel as the Israelis were unpacking their suitcases from the buses.
The shooters aimed at the tourists as they walked from the entrance of the hotel to the parked buses nearby.

The thirty people kidnapped from the city of Sabratha being held in the neighouring city of Surman were released yesterday, Sabratha Municipality Council reports.
The 30 were arrested on the main motorway linking the two cities. Drivers were stopped and asked to identify where they were from, and those from Sabratha were taken by the kidnappers.
They were kidnapped to be used as a bargaining tool in revenge for the Sabratha and Surman authorities having arrested their fellow gang members implicated in the kidnapping of the three Shershary children in December.
The three Shershary children are believed to still be under the control of their kidnappers in a house sieged by armed authorities in Surman since Friday. Gunfire had been exchanged during the holdout since Friday.
Fresh fighting broke out in the troubled southern oasis town of Obari today between Tuareg and Tebu forces. Four people are reported to have been killed and five wounded when a Tebu militia launched what is reported to have been a heavy attack in the town.
It coincided with talks starting in Sebha between representatives of the two communities on implementing the agreement signed in November brokered by the Qataris.
The clashes as well as attacks on the town’s civilian population have been condemned by the Presidency Council led by prime minister-designate Faiez Serraj. In a statement calling on both sides to respect the agreement, it said that violence could only inflame the conflict.
The ongoing conflict between Tebus adn Tuaregs in the mainly Tuareg town has resulted in 300 deaths since it started in September 2014 and resulted in over 200 families being displaced.

[Al Ahram] Masked men threw Molotov cocktails at an intelligence service compound in the city of Qatif in eastern Soddy Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face... , activists said on Monday, in an apparent reprisal for the execution of a prominent Shia Muslim holy man earlier this month.
A Saudi Interior Ministry front man said "there was a failed terrorist attempt to burn the building with Molotov cocktails" and that one of the assailants was captured.
Video footage posted on social media and dated Jan. 9 showed several masked young men moving under cover of darkness and lobbing Molotov cocktails over the protective outer wall of a building compound. Most of the Molotov cocktails were seen exploding on the ground inside, setting a nearby tree on fire.
The authenticity of the footage could not immediately be confirmed.
It was not initially clear who was behind the attack. But the recording contained a footnote indicating that it was carried out by Shia youth seeking to avenge the execution of Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, a vocal critic of the kingdom's Sunni Muslim monarchy.

[FRANCE24] A teenager who stabbed a Jewish teacher in the southern French city of Marseille Monday is a Turkish citizen of Kurdish origin who told police he attacked in the name of the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... (IS) group, according to a prosecutor.
The attack, which left the 35-year-old teacher with an injured hand and shoulder, occurred in broad daylight in the south of the city, Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin told news hounds Monday.
The 15-year-old ethnic Kurd rushed the victim from behind and stabbed him in the shoulder, then chased after him for a few metres until he fell, Robin said.
The victim fended off the assailant using his arms and legs, as well as his "holy book", which was damaged in the scuffle, the prosecutor said.
The teenage suspect "has the profile of someone who was radicalised on the Internet", Robin told a press briefing.
"He claimed to have been acting for Daesh [Islamic State]," Robin said, using the Arabic acronym for the IS group.
"You get the sense that he does not have a full grasp of the fundamentals of Islam," he added.
A good student radicalised online
The boy admitted to Sherlocks that he planned to arm himself and kill police as soon as he is released, according to Robin.
The prosecutor said the teenager's family was unaware of his radicalisation and that he was a "good student".
"It appears there was a form of premeditation" with the intent of killing the victim because of his religion, Robin said.
The teenager, who will turn 16 next week, faces charges of "attempted murder on grounds of religion" and "defence of terrorism".
Reacting to the incident on Twitter, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said, "The anti-Semitic aggression against a teacher in Marseille is revolting."
The teacher was on his way to work at the Franco-Hebraic Institute when he was attacked.

Spokesman Ahmed al-Assadi told AFP that Iraqi forces mistakenly identified the group of fighters as krazed killer before launching the deadly Arclight airstrike.
"The drone struck with a first missile and then two more seven minutes later," he said.

[Al Ahram] Bombings killed 20 people and wounded dozens at a cafe in the Iraqi town of Muqdadiyah northeast of Baghdad on Monday, officers said. A bomb exploded at the cafe and a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-rigged vehicle after people gathered at the scene, a police captain and an army colonel said.
More from Youth Independent:
Militants attacked a shopping mall in eastern Baghdad on Monday, killing at least 17 people and injuring 40 more.
A gun battle lasted almost two hours, and officials were nervous a hostage situation was ensuing. But when the fight came to a close, officials said that most of the deaths had actually been caused by car bomb that started the attack and by two suicide bombers who struck at the mall’s entrance, The New York Times reports.
An Iraqi security official claimed that the attackers killed at least 17 people, including five security force members, and injured almost 40 people.
The Islamic State (ISIS), or the terrorist group that controls big portions of Syria and Iraq, claimed responsibility for the two-in-one attack. The group said that it targeted a gathering of “rejectionits,” otherwise known as Shi’ite Muslims.
The group also said that four militants were involved and said that they killed nearly 90 people in a social media post, according to a translation by the SITE Intelligence Group, which is keeps up with jihadist communications.
“What is coming is worse and more bitter, God permitting,” the group stated.
IS has suffered a number of military setbacks across Iraq in the past year. Security officials say fierce battles and relentless air strikes have depleted its manpower. Analysts see that as a reason for the drop in attacks targeting civilians in the capital which were an almost daily occurrence two years ago.
The Iraqi intelligence services announced on December they had detained 40 IS members as part of major swoop in the Baghdad area. They described the arrests as the continuation of an operation that saw them bust a car bomb-making cell in Baghdad earlier in 2015.

The Peshmerga forces started last week digging a trench along the southern suburb of Kirkuk, which has been exposed to ISIS offensive over the past few months.

[IsraelTimes] Man pulls out a knife during a routine inspection near Hermesh; receives medical treatment at the scene, army says
IDF troops shot and injured a Paleostinian man who attempted to stab them near the Hermesh settlement in the northern West Bank on Monday, the army said.
According to the IDF, the soldiers were inspecting the man at a checkpoint near Hermesh, southwest of Jenin, when he pulled out a knife.
The forces on scene opened fire, shooting and wounding the Paleostinian man. He was treated at the scene for his injuries, the army said.
[IsraelTimes] 'Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, propaganda' confiscated from Birzeit campus; 15 Paleostinians tossed in the slammer Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'! in overnight operations
Israeli soldiers raided a West Bank university overnight Sunday, seizing materials linked to local terror cells as well as "Hamas propaganda," the IDF said.
Birzeit University was one of the targets in a series of raids carried out across the West Bank overnight, an army front man said. During the operations, soldiers arrested 15 terror suspects, seized weapons stockpiles and made preparations to destroy the home of a Paleostinian man who attacked soldiers earlier this week.
The army said the raid on Birzeit, located near the West Bank city of Ramallah, was directed at terror cells believed to be operating from the campus.
"Security forces seized materials including propaganda for Hamas belonging to the illegal association 'Kotla,' known for its links to the Hamas terror organization," an IDF statement read.
"Incitement is a major factor fueling the recent terror. Localized cells affiliated with large organizations, including Hamas, promote and encourage terror and acts of violence against Israeli civilians and security forces," the statement added.
The army has stepped up its routine nightly raids in West Bank towns and villages as a wave of stabbing, shooting and car-ramming attacks continues across the country, with over 25 Israelis having been killed in such attacks since October. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has blamed incitement by Paleostinian leaders for the ongoing violence.
Birzeit, considered the best university in the West Bank, has long been a center of political activism. In April of last year, Hamas beat out political rival Fatah in the Birzeit student council election, marking a dramatic turn in the school's political alliances.
Twelve of the detainees picked up overnight are suspected of direct involvement in recent attacks on civilians and security forces, with one belonging to Hamas, the army said.
During an arrest in the West Bank village of Kfar Irtah, soldiers seized weapons and ammunition stockpiles suspected of being held for use in future attacks.
Soldiers also mapped out the house of Paleostinian man who tried to stab IDF soldiers Saturday morning near the West Bank settlement of Beka'ot, east of Nablus.
Twenty-three-year old Mahmad Akab Mahmad from Kfar Jadida near Jenin was one of two assailants rubbed out in the incident. No Israelis were maimed.
Iran detains 10 US sailors after vessels stopped in the Gulf
Iran has detained 10 US sailors after their vessels were stopped in the Gulf, a US official told the BBC.
"We lost contact with two small US naval craft en route from Kuwait to Bahrain," the official said.
He said that the Iranians informed the US that the sailors were safe and "will promptly be allowed to continue their journey".
The incident happened near Farsi Island after one of the ships encountered mechanical problems.
After the incident, US Secretary of State John Kerry immediately called Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif to begin negotiations.
An unnamed official told the Associated Press that Mr Kerry "personally engaged with Zarif on this issue to try to get to this outcome".
Mr Kerry and Mr Zarif developed a personal relationship throughout three years of negotiating a nuclear deal.
Iran's semi-official news agency FARS reported that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard detained the nine men and one woman, and that they had been "trespassing" in Iranian waters.
It is not clear when the sailors will be released.
In December, Iran's navy conducted rocket tests near US warships and other commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
The tests were "highly provocative", a US military commander said at the time.

I remember how urgently the Iranians got the hostages off the ground, and into the air - home-bound - a few hours (minutes???) before President Reagan took the oath of office in January 1981. Quite a contrast!!!
Would the Iranians pull this kind of crap under a President Trump????
[Al Ahram] At least 12 children and three adults were killed in a Russian air strike that hit a school in Syria's Aleppo province on Monday, a monitor said.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the three adults included a teacher, and that the strike in the town of Anjara also injured at least 20 people, all of them children and teachers.
The monitor said there had been heavy air strikes and festivities between government and rebel forces since Sunday in the northern province, which is controlled by a mixture of moderate and Salafist tough guys.
Photos distributed by media activists in Aleppo province showed a classroom full of rubble with the wooden tops of desks blown off their metal frames.
The Britannia-based Observatory also reported that three children were killed by rebel rocket fire on a government-held district in Aleppo city.
Control of the city has been divided between government forces in the west and rebel fighters in the east since shortly after fighting began there in mid-2012.

[NRTTV] Aid convoys entered the besieged Syrian town on Monday (Jan. 11) where thousands are trapped and the United Nations ...the Oyster Bay money pit... says people are reported to have died of starvation.
Dozens of trucks bearing the Red Islamic Thingy logo and carrying food and medical supplies left Damascus for Madaya near the Lebanese border as part of an agreement between warring sides.
Video shot by Rooters showed the trucks at Tukiyah, 12 kilometers away from Madaya, and then followed the trucks as they entered the city.
Another convoy was en route to two Shi'ite villages, al Foua and Kefraya in the northwestern province of Idlib 300 km (200 miles) away, the Red Thingy said on its Syria Twitter account. Under the agreement, aid was to enter Madaya and the two villages simultaneously.
Madaya is besieged by pro-Syrian government forces, while the two villages in Idlib province are encircled by rebels fighting the Syrian government.
The blockade of Madaya has become a focal issue for Syrian opposition leaders, who told a U.N. envoy last week they would not take part in talks with the government, slated for later this month, until it and other sieges are lifted.
The United Nations said on Thursday (Jan. 7) the Syrian government had agreed to allow access to Madaya, where U.N. officials say there have been credible reports of people dying of starvation.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks the war, puts the toll at 10, while opposition activists say it is in the dozens. Rooters could not independently confirm the reports.
One opposition activist has said people were eating leaves and plants.
The Madaya blockade began six months ago when the Syrian army and its Lebanese ally, Hezbollah, started a campaign to reestablish Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad Terror of Aleppo ... 's control over areas along the Syrian-Lebanese border.

[NRTTV] In a statement from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the KRG has reportedly interrupted an Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... (IS) propaganda website and the radio station. According to the statement, the network was cut off so the IS could not expand outreach within Kurdistan. The decision to restrict the media services was done by the KRG.
In order to avoid the violent rhetoric of IS in Kurdistan, the Ministry decided to cut off any vague networks that could be related to the holy warrior group.
Mawlood Bawamurad, Minister of Transportation and Communications said, "the decision from the KRG to cut off the website and radio of IS in order to avoid their message from entering of Kurdistan."
The KRG also instructed three ministries, including the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Culture and Youth, and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, to avoid having IS websites and radios entering in Kurdistan. The stations are likely based in djinn-infested Mosul ... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn... , a city seen as the IS headquarters in Iraq.
The Minister of Transportation and Communication added, "we have cut all networks that IS could benefit from in the area, which are not far from Kurdistan, especially Erbil and Duhok cities."
The action is seen as an effort to limit influence in the Kurdistan Region, as IS has used social media and traditional media to spread propaganda.

No more checks in the checkbook for you, ISIS
[ARA News] DAMASCUS – The U.S.-led coalition bombed a cash storage facility for the Islamic State (ISIS) jihadi group in the city of Mosul in Iraq’s northwestern Nineveh province, a U.S. defense official confirmed on Monday.
The airstrike, in which some 900-kilogram of bombs were used, hit the facility, destroying millions of dollars worth of cash, the official said.
“We estimate in the millions of dollars… from all their illicit stuff: oil, looting, extortion,” the official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.
ISIS is considered the richest terrorist group in the world, with large oil revenues, beside imposing taxes on people in areas under the group’s control and collecting ransoms from families of hostages in order to fund its daily operations across Syria and Iraq.
The radical group’s revenue from oil production used to reach more than $45 million per month. However, the amount has recently decreased due to the intensified airstrikes.
United States and allies have recently stepped up airstrikes on ISIS’s financial resources in the region. The Pentagon said in a statement that the coalition’s strikes have caused “significant damage” to ISIS’s ability to fund itself.
According to local activists, the terror group makes most of its money from taxing, oil sale, kidnapping, ransoms and the sale of antiquities.
Two 2,000-pound bombs destroyed the site quickly. But the longstanding impact may be even more significant. The officials said the U.S. plans to strike more financial targets like this one to take away ISIS's ability to function as a state-like entity.

First it was oil trucks that had escaped destruction and then petroleum installations that were targeted. Now it is IS banks. Has the Pentagon (or the White House) grown a pair of balls, or is there something else afoot?
