Taliban launch coordinated attack on Kandahar’s Arghandab District
Shoulder to shoulder, fixed bayonets?

Taliban militants have launched a coordinated attack on Arghandab District of southern Kandahar province.

Reports suggest that Taliban are armed with heavy and light weapons, and as well bombs.

At least three big explosions were heard in the area and local residents believe they were suicide bombings.

Heavy clash between the remaining Taliban and security forces still continues at the site where the district governor’s office and police HQ exists.

Government determined to arrest Zabul kidnappers
Especially if they don't get their cut

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has said that government is determined to arrest kidnappers of 31 civilians in southern Zabul province.

In a meeting with the released hostages in Presidential Palace “ARG” on Wednesday, President Ghani said that terrorists showed their horror when they abducted civilians in Zabul, adding that they would be arrested and dragged to judiciary.

In the meeting where vice presidents, Abdul Rashid Dostum and Mohammad Sarwar Danish, were also present the President instructed related officials to deliver assistance to the released hostages and families of those killed.

The 31 passengers were abducted reportedly by Uzbek militants, who have pledged allegiance to Daesh, from Shah Joy District of Zabul province in February.

25 to 26 of them were released, including some freed nearly nine months after, and at least five of them were killed.

19 of them were released in exchange for some prisoners.

Bomb blast kills two brothers in Ghazni
Ghazni-Police HQA bomb explosion has claimed the lives of two brothers in southern Ghazni province of Afghanistan.

The incident took place in Rabat area of Deh Yak District around 07:00 am this morning.

According to the district’s governor Karimullah Ameeri , the victims had loaded apples to a “Flying Coach” vehicle and were driving towards Ghazni city when their vehicle ran over a Taliban-planted roadside landmine.

Meanwhile, the province’s Police Chief Brigadier General Aminullah Amarkhil says that the victims belong to Rabat village.

Germany To Send In More Troops To Afghanistan
A rifle company
Germany will send 130 more soldiers to Afghanistan, the government said on Wednesday after a cabinet meeting to discuss support for Afghan forces struggling to tackle an Islamist insurgency.

The Taliban's surprise seizure of the northern city of Kunduz in September, the first time the militants had taken a provincial capital in 14 years, has prompted the U.S.-led military coalition to revise its strategy in Afghanistan.

Although NATO has withdrawn almost all of its combat troops, it still has soldiers stationed there to train local forces. Up to about 850 German troops are in Afghanistan on this mission.

That number will now go up to 980, the government said. German forces are stationed in the north of the country.

German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said after the fall of Kunduz that she was open to delaying the withdrawal of German soldiers from Afghanistan beyond next year.

President Barack Obama announced last month that some 9,800 U.S soldiers would remain in Afghanistan through most of 2016, reversing a decision to withdraw all but a small U.S.-Embassy based force in Kabul before he leaves office in January 2017.

The decision was based on an assessment that Afghan forces were not yet as strong as they needed to be.

Weapons, Explosives Seized in Kabul
Kabul police on Wednesday reported they had seized a large amount of arms and explosives in operations in Kabul over the past three months.

Police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi said at a press conference that police had seized the weapons and explosives - of which were intended to be used by insurgents in the capital.

He said the deputy head of an insurgent group was also arrested in the city.

Rahimi said: "If we had not seized these arms and explosives imagine what would have happened to innocent people in Kabul."

He went on to say police investigations are underway to arrest insurgent groups earmarked to have used these arms.

According to him, the weapons and explosives had been well hidden in cars and in homes when found.

In addition to the weapons and explosives seized, ammonium nitrate was also found. This is used to make explosives.

Rahimi said the insurgent leader Qari Khairullah who was arrested is from Paktia province and was responsible for making mines and IEDs.

In addition he said they have arrested two people for the recent theft of three million Afs from the owner of a private company. The two accused had also allegedly threatened to kill the company owner.

Rahimi said: "These two men attacked the owner of a private company when he was leaving a bank. They stole his money and tried to kidnap him.

Two Killed In Separate Shootings In Kabul
Unknown gunmen on Wednesday killed a man and a woman in Kabul in two separate shooting incidents, police confirmed.

In the first incident, in Karte-Naw, two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on a 62-year-old woman, whose sister was killed in a similar incident in the same area last year.

Jamila Halif was a teacher at a kindergarten and was killed outside the school. However, the motive is not yet clear, said police.

Her family has condemned the incident and accused the government of negligence over the sister's death last year, as they say the perpetrators of that shooting were never brought to justice.

The deceased's brother, Rohullah Halif, said: "I want my sister's killers to be identified otherwise I promise to set myself alight in front of everyone."

An eyewitness said there had been the sound of gunshots. "When I went to look I saw the dead woman lying there."

Kabul police said they are investigating the matter and are trying to find out what the motive was.

Abdul Rahman Rahimi said: "So far what we can say is our investigations are underway but we assure you we will find these criminals and bring them to justice."

This incident happened just hours before the second incident which saw a man being gunned down in Khair Khana area in Kabul.

Unknown gunmen allegedly opened fired on Shah Mohammad near the Sayed Al-Nasiri High School.

The gunmen fled the scene after killing Mohammad.

His family members have also criticized government for not ensuring the safety of its citizens.

ISIS: Sharm el-Sheikh Soda-Can Bomb Plot Originally Targeted Western Airliner
[PJ Media] Just days after a string of attacks across Paris left 132 dead, the Islamic State published a new issue of its magazine featuring press photos of the carnage in France and an exclusive photo of the alleged bomb used to take down a Russian plane.

They claim that the Metrojet, which crashed over the Sinai on Halloween, was taken down by an improvised explosive device constructed in a soda can (screenshot above).

"The blessed attacks against the Russians and the French were successfully executed despite the international intelligence war against the Islamic State. Both crusader nations had undoubtedly destroyed their homes with their own hands through their hostilities towards Islam, the Muslims, and the Muslim body of the Khilāfah," the magazine stated.

They also claimed that a plane from Russia wasn't their first target at the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, a favorite holiday spot for Brits.

"After having discovered a way to compromise the security at the Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport and resolving to bring down a plane belonging to a nation in the American-led Western coalition against the Islamic State, the target was changed to a Russian plane," the article continues. "A bomb was smuggled onto the airplane."

Libyan deputy foreign minister beaten up
Tripoli, 18 November 2015:

A hunt is apparently on for gunmen who last night beat up deputy foreign minister Hassan Elsaghir in his Beida office.

The government has condemned the attack, in which some some of Elsaghir’s staff and security detail were also reportedly injured. It described it as a “barbaric and cowardly assault”.

Details are still unclear but that several armed men burst into the foreign ministry yesterday evening. Some sources have suggested that the attackers were employees angry at the cutback in foreign diplomatic staff and the loss of opportunities to serve abroad.

Beida has seen little lawlessness since the government relocated there from Tripoli. However, Elsaghir was also involved in one of the earlier outbreaks. In January, he was briefly kidnapped from his hotel room in an incident that was linked to his refusal to issue diplomatic passports to individuals not entitled to them.

At the time, the government promised an investigation. However no arrests were made in connection with his abduction.

Tripoli tense following Misratan abductions
By Libya Herald reporter,

Tripoli, 18 November 2015:

Tensions continue to rise in Tripoli following a mass seizure of Misratans in the city by local militias yesterday and a statement by them effectively ordering Misratan forces out of the capital. Leaders of a number of the city’s revolutionaries and militias, including Haitham Tajuri and Abdul Ghani Kikli (more ususlly known as Ghnaiwa), last night held a “council of war” in Tripoli’s Corinthia hotel, reportedly agreeing to unite their forces if it came to a fight with those from Misrata.

In a clear reference to Misratan forces but not mentioning them by name, the statement said that some militias which had joined Libya Dawn operation had appointed themselves as the police in Tripoli. Accusing them of kidnapping, robbery and other crimes in parts of the capital, the signatories to the statement said that they would not allow this to continue.

“We will not allow any infringement upon our city”, read the statement, signed by 11 Tripoli militia leaders including Tajouri and Ghnaiwa.

Friction between Tripoli revolutionaries and Misrata has been rising ever since Misratan brigades signed peace deals over the summer with the Wershefana and other groups west of Tripoli and pulled out of the area.

As a result of the split within the Libya Dawn alliance, there has been a growing number of sproadic clashes between Misratans and the Tripoli revolutionaries. Last month saw fighting between Misratans forces and gunmen loyal to Tajouri near the Wadi Rabie barracks, east of Tripoli International Airport. This month Tajouri’s forces again clashed with Misratans, attacking the Prime Ministry building in Tripoli, which the latter were guarding.

The current crisis is said to have followed a warning to Ghneiwa that he had to release prisoners held by him, including some Misratans. When he failed to respond, Misratan forces on Monday attacked a villa in Tripoli’s Hadba district which was reportedly being used as a prison, and freed a number of captives. These have been named as Salah Mamas, Abduljalil Al-Ghraibi Al-Rujbani, Mahmud Al-Muzafer, Abdulqader Al-Hashmi, Jibril Ben Mousa and Sayd Uglu, the latter a Turkish businessmen. It is alleged that all had been kidnapped for ransom.

Rujbani, the head of Tripoli Central Hospital, was abducted in May.

It was initially reported that in Monday’s raid, Ghneiwa himself had been captured. In the event, it was one of his senior commanders who was taken.

In response, Ghneiwa gunmen yesterday set up checkpoints across Tripoli, even on the main highway. Eye witnesses reported that anyone from Misrata was arrested. Dozens were said to have been seized, with some reports putting the figure at 100.

Ghneiwa allegedly wants to use those arrested in exchange for those of this men being held by the Misratans; he is also said to want those being held at the Hadba villa to be handed back to him.

Last night in a bid to calm measures, elders from Tripoli’s Abu Sleem district, Ghneiwa’s power base, held talks with Misratan counterparts.

The capital now awaits the result of talks between representatuves of Ghneiwa and the Misratan militias. The situation is “potentially very dangerous,” one official said,

In July 2014, Kano was hit four times in the space of a week by a spate of young exploding trollop female suicide bombers wearing the head and shoulder covering used by many Muslim women in the region.

Police in Kano, northern Nigeria's commercial hub, have blocked entries and exits to the city as part of a manhunt for the VW Sharan minibus that dropped the two girls at the market, Majia said.

Bahrain sends troops to Aden to join coalition
Bahrain has sent troops to Aden to join a Saudi-dominated Arab coalition and national allies in ensuring security in the liberated city following the return of Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, the coalition spokesman has said.

“A Bahraini force has arrived in Aden…it will participate along with the other coalition forces in supporting security and stability in the city,” Brigadier Ahmed Asiri told the Saudi news network Alarabiya.

He did not mention the size of the Bahrain force deployed in Aden, here the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Sudan have troops. The other coalition members are taking part in naval patrols or air raids against the Iranian-backed coup rebels in Yemen.

They said he would oversee military operations launched by the coalition and national army and resistance to quell the coup and liberate all areas in the conflict-battered Arab country.

Paris Attacks: French Prime Minister Issues Chemical, Biological Attack Warning
[HNGN] France is facing a threat of chemical and biological attack on its soil by extremists linked with last week's Paris attack, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls warns.

"The macabre imagination of these commanders has no limits: assault rifles, decapitation, suicide bombings, knife attacks. I say this with the utmost care - but we know there may be a risk of the possibility chemical and biological weapons," Valls said during a session of lower house of national Parliament on Thursday, according to The Local. The French lawmakers are debating on a bill extending the state of emergency for another three months.

"More than ever, it's time for Europe to adopt the text... to guarantee the traceability of movements, including within the union. It's a condition of our collective security," he stated, according AFP.

Valls remarks in Parliament follow the carnage in the French capital on Friday that killed 129 people. Shortly after the Paris terror attack, President Francois Hollande declared a state of emergency in the country.

Officials at interior ministry are still working on verifying the fact that the suspected mastermind of the Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, was among those killed in a police raid. Three suspected terrorists were killed and five arrested in a raid in an apartment in a suburb in Paris on Wednesday, as HNGN reported previously.

Clashes in Turkey's southeast leave 12 dead

, as well as two civilians, authorities said.

Security forces launched operations in the town of Nusaybin on the Syrian border last week, killing 10 PKK fighters, the Mardin governor's office said in a statement on Wednesday. Two non-combatants were killed and 13 injured.

The statement did not offer any details of how the casualties were caused.

A two-year ceasefire and peace talks between the Turkish state and the PKK lie in tatters after a 31-year war was reignited in July, following the ruling AK Party's loss of its majority in a June election.

Kurdish politicians accuse the AKP of fomenting the unrest to garner support in a re-run election, a charge the party denies. Fighting has gripped parts of the mainly Kurdish southeast.

The AKP regained its parliamentary majority in the Nov. 1 vote.

Authorities placed Nusaybin under a round-the-clock curfew on Nov. 13, and that remains in place as security forces continue to clear trenches and barricades from the streets, the statement said.

Separately, police in the city of Diyarbakir detained Leyla Imret, the mayor of the town of Cizre, which saw heavy fighting in September, her lawyer said. He said he did not know why she were tossed into the calaboose and that there had been no arrest warrant.

The Interior Ministry suspended Imret, elected Cizre's mayor in 2014, in September while the town was under curfew amid fighting between the PKK and police.

The Diyarbakir prosecutor's office said it had launched an investigation of Figen Yuksekdag, co-chair of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party, for allegedly "insulting soldiers" last week when she tried to enter Silvan, a district of the city under curfew.

American –Turkish Initiative to Close Borders in front of ISIS
More on this story from yesterday.
Turkish official sources yesterday confirmed that the Turkish army and international coalition forces consider that the military operation that ISIS is preparing for aims to invade areas that the Free Syrian Army and the Syrian Turkmen Army opposition groups are active in. The sources mentioned to “Asharq Al-Awsat” that Ankara has concrete evidence and videos of the mobilisation operations carried out by the extremist organisations, indicating that Turkey has prepared essential plans to address the matter and that its response will be violent and unprecedented.

Turkish and American statements reported the presence of a joint movement for military action near the Syrian border which aims to close the border to ISIS, a matter which opens the doors to many possibilities including the existence of an organisation which uses the Jarabulus area bordering Turkey as a strategic centre to smuggle fighters and other supplies.

The US Secretary of State John Kerry made a statement yesterday which reinforced the Turkish-American initiative in the areas with borders when he said in an interview with “CNN”, an American news network, that “75% of all borders in the north of Syria have been closed, and we will begin an operation with the Turks to close the remaining area which has a length of 98 kilometres”.

On his part, the President of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces Khaled Khoja said in an interview with “Asharq Al-Awsat” that the opposition will not depart from the “Geneva 1” resolutions and that it will not accept deals being prepared at its expense. He said that he has obtained assurances from the US Secretary of State John Kerry on this matter during the last telephone call between them. Khoja added that the Russians and the regime have yet to make any progress on the ground despite the Free Army and opposition’s lack of power. Khoja also stated that the Syrian opposition may meet in the Saudi capital during the next two months to determine its negotiating delegation.

More than 40 human smugglers arrested
LAHORE: The Federal Investigation Agency arrested over 40 ‘human smugglers’ from various areas of Punjab on Wednesday.

Sixty-one raids were carried out, mostly in Punjab, in a crackdown launched across the country on the instructions of Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

The arrested people include owners of fake visa consultancy firms in Punjab, most wanted human smugglers and proclaimed offenders.

“We have arrested 43 agents and fake visa consultancy firms’ owners during raids in Lahore, Gujrat, Faisalabad and Multan. Some 300 passports, fake visa stamps and bank statements have been seized from them,” Lahore FIA Director Dr Usman Anwar told Dawn. He said it was illegal for the consultancy firms to keep the passports of clients.

The FIA director said the crackdown had been intensified to stop Pakistanis from illegally entering European and other countries. “The Pakistanis facing deportation in Europe for being illegal immigrants are earning a bad name for the country,” he said.

The FIA laid hands on the human smugglers and fake visa consultancy firms after the minister asked it to adopt a strategy of prevention, protection of victims, prosecution of criminals, pursuing proclaimed offenders and absconders and partnership at the local and international levels.

He ordered the FIA to freeze bank accounts, cancel passports and block the computerised national identity cards of 300 identified human smugglers.

“We have placed the names of 150 human smugglers and their agents in Punjab on the Passport Control List,” Dr Anwar said.

The interior ministry fears that the country may be downgraded to ‘Tier 3’ from Tier 2 on the US Human Trafficking Watch List.

The ministry has also reportedly warned the local and foreign airlines not to bring deported persons to the country without its prior permission.

UN nuclear agency: Iran's uranium stockpile has grown
[Ynet] Iran's stockpile of low-enriched uranium has increased in the past three months even though Tehran is supposed to reduce it significantly under a deal with major powers, the UN nuclear watchdog said on Wednesday in a confidential report seen by Rooters.

Iran had also moved centrifuges, machines that enrich uranium, at its Natanz and Fordow sites, the report by the ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said. Under the deal with major powers reached in July, Iran is supposed to reduce the number of centrifuges it has in operation.

"I would like to point out that a decision has been made to let Russian planes fly sorties to search for tanker trucks carrying petroleum products belonging to gunnies in areas controlled by the organization calling itself the Islamic State," Russian operations chief Col. Gen. General Andrei Kartapolov said.

He added that Russian warplanes destroyed about 500 fuel tank trucks that were illegally transporting oil from Syria to Iraq.

"Over the past years, the Islamic State and other Death Eater groupings have streamlined the operations of the so-called 'pipeline on the road' in the areas under their control," Kartapolov said.

He noted that these Arclight airstrikes have considerably sabotaged the group's oil smuggling between Iraq and Syria "In the first several days alone, our warplanes destroyed about 500 fuel tank trucks."

(Also, the Russians' accuracy didn't seem to be pin-point. Any thoughts on that?) Al Qaeda in Syria claims downing two Russian drones
Or as they call it in Ukraine, Thursday

Al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate Al-Nusra Front said it had downed two Russian reconnaissance drones over a military airport it controls in northwest Syria.

If confirmed, the incident would be the first time that the armed opposition down a Russian aircraft since Moscow launched strikes in Syria on September 30. Al-Nusra, in a post late Tuesday on one of its official Syrian Twitter accounts, claimed the "downing of two Russian reconnaissance drones over Abu Duhur military airport" in Idlib province.

The group posted a picture of wreckage in a large plain as well as two others of a small plane on fire with larger military aircraft parked in the background. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group also said Al-Nusra Front had downed two drones over Abu Duhur, but could not specify if they were Russian.

Al-Nusra and its allies in the powerful Army of Conquest alliance seized Abu Duhur on September 9, consolidating its control of Idlib province.

Syria's army began using Russian-provided unmanned drones in the north and east of the war-torn country on September 23, just a week before Moscow began its own air war in Syria.

The country's conflict erupted in 2011 with anti-government protests that spiralled into a fractured civil war increasingly dominated by militant groups.

Syrian man kills judge at ISIS Sharia Court
Rough justice
MANBIJ – A Syrian young man killed a judge from the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) along with two of his escorts in the city of Manbij in Aleppo province, north Syria, local sources reported on Wednesday.

After killing the ISIS judge in Manbij, the man has committed suicide by shooting himself.

“The young man has shot dead a Tunisian national, who served as a judge at the ISIS-linked Sharia Court in Manbij,” an eyewitness told ARA News on the condition of anonymity.

The incident took place on Tuesday, after the Sharia Court beheaded several family members of the Syrian young man.

“The same judge had order the beheading of at least three family members of the man, including his brother,” the source reported. “He took revenge and killed himself afterwards to avoid falling in the hands of Daesh (ISIS).”

In the meantime, dozens of people took to the street in Manbij to protest against ISIS atrocities. However, the group opened fire on the protesters, killing at least two and wounding several others. The rest of the protesters were arrested, activists told ARA News in Manbij.

This is the third protest organized by the people of Manbij in two months, calling for the departure of the terror group from their city and denouncing its violations against civilians. The terror group has captured the city of Manbij more than a year and a half ago, after battles with the Syrian opposition forces.

ISIS artillery hammers Syrian positions in Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZ-ZOR – The radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) pounded residential buildings in the regime-held districts of Deir ez-Zor city in eastern Syria, with several mortar shells, causing injuries among civilians, local sources reported on Wednesday.

Speaking to ARA News in Deir ez-Zor, eyewitnesses said that three shells dropped on the public street in the Jura district, while another shell landed near the Sinaa school. The shelling claimed the life of a civilian and caused the injury of several others.

“The injured were transferred to a nearby clinic in the area,” a local source told ARA News on the condition of anonymity.

Also on Wednesday, the pro-regime warplanes conducted six airstrikes on ISIS-held neighborhoods in Deir ez-Zor, causing civilian casualties, according to local activists. ARA News could not verify the number of casualties.

“Pro-Assad warplanes launched at least six airstrikes on neighborhoods held by Daesh (ISIS) in central Deir ez-Zor,” a media activist and eyewitnesses reported. “Scores of civilians were hardly injured in the strikes.”

Last August, Syrian regime forces cut the bread material from people besieged by ISIS in the regime-held districts in the city of Deir ez-Zor, locals reported.

In July, ISIS militant fighters opened fire on a number of civilians in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zo, who were trying to access relief aid to the besieged neighborhoods of the city, local activists reported at the time. The sources pointed out that the volunteers were carrying food supplies in an attempt to reach western neighborhoods via the Euphrates River from Mahimidiyah village.

Islamic State extremists have been imposing blockade on the regime-held districts of Jura and al-Qusour since January of 2015. Inhabitants suffer miserable living conditions as a result of the siege imposed by ISIS, according to local relief groups.

One possible explanation; if your bombing campaign has primarily targeted ISIS High Value Targets (HVT) traveling about in vehicles, Toyota's, captured MRAPS, etc, the continued mobility of these vehicles is essential.

#13  More than a year ago there was the claim that ISIS made $1 million a day selling oil to Turkey and Iraq. There were articles that disputed that claim because it would take hundreds of trucks to achieve that amount. I for one certainly didn't realize that the Pentagon had placed the trucks off limits. IOW, the Pentagon kept silent as ISIS continued to fund itself through the ilicit movement of oil that could have been stopped. Don't tell me that the Pentagon is not a 'go along and get along' operation.

Warren said the leaflets, which were dropped about 45 minutes before the airstrikes began, said, "Get out of your trucks now, and run away from them."

Revolutionary Guards: Terrorist team destroyed
[RFE/RL] Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps said it has destroyed a terrorist cell in the western province of Kermanshah. In a statement on November 18, the IRGC said the operation was carried out in "recent days."

It said, "A terrorist team in Kermanshah Province near the border was identified in recent days and its members were arrested in an operation," adding that "some military equipment" was confiscated.

A day earlier, the IRGC commander in Kermanshah was quoted as saying the IRGC and the Intelligence Ministry had arrested groups in the province trying to recruit fighters for Daesh.

Intelligence Minister Mahmud Alavi said on November 15 that the recent terrorists attacks in Beirut and Paris should be regarded with "serious alarm" when it comes to Iran's security.
