CONSTABLE, N.Y. -- David Sweat, the remaining prison escapee on the run in northern New York, was shot by a state trooper and taken into custody on Sunday after a 23-day manhunt that began with an improbable escape from two maximum-security cells and ended in the rain-drenched woods just south of the Canadian border.
Mr. Sweat, 35, a murderer who had been serving a sentence of life without parole, was in critical condition at Albany Medical Center late Sunday night, according to Dennis P. McKenna, the hospital's medical director.
The shooting occurred here around 3:20 p.m. after a State Police sergeant spotted a man jogging down a road, stopped to question him and recognized him as Mr. Sweat, said Superintendent Joseph A. D'Amico of the New York State Police. The sergeant, Jay Cook, told Mr. Sweat to come over to him, but instead Mr. Sweat turned and fled across a field toward the tree line, Mr. D'Amico said. Sergeant Cook, a firearms instructor who was patrolling by himself, gave chase and finally opened fire, striking Mr. Sweat twice in the torso, because he realized the fugitive was going to make it to the woods and possibly disappear, Mr. D'Amico said. Unconfirmed reporting from a retired US Border Patrol Agent indicates Mr. Matt's autopsy report listed 'cause of death' as three gunshot wounds to the head.
[Iran Press TV] Second New York state prison escapee David Sweat, who escaped Clinton Correctional Facility on June 6, is in jug after being shot by police, US media report say.
The 35-year-old convicted murderer was injured and taken into custody by law enforcement officers near the Canadian border on Sunday, two days after his fellow escapee was rubbed out.
"At approximately 3:20 pm on June 28, a member of the New York State Police spotted a suspicious man walking down a roadway in the Town of Constable," police said on Sunday in a statement.
"The State Police member shot and injured Clinton Correctional Facility escapee David Sweat. Sweat was taken into police custody alive, then taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries," it added.
The statement said Sweat's condition was "unknown."
Richard Matt, the other convicted murderer, was shot and killed by police in woods in the town of Malone a few miles from the Canadian border on Friday.
The two murderers broke out of Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, 22 days ago.

[DAWN] Although the searing heat of last week has passed, high temperatures claimed another 20 lives in the city today.
According to Sindh health department statistics, since June 20, a total of 1,206 have died in Bloody Karachi ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... alone due to the heat wave.
Commenting on the situation, Provincial Minister for Health Jam Mahtab claimed some deaths could be prevented if loadshedding comes to an end. He added that 35 per cent of those who had died were women.

Rather presumptuous of you, Frank, assuming that because 35% were women that ALL the remaining 65% were men - what about the other 213 genders?
[Al Ahram] The head of Burundi's parliament on Sunday said he had left the nation due to the violence raging there and urged the president not to seek an "illegal" third term.
"For the moment, I am forced to stay in Brussels... I stayed here given the difficulties in my country, difficulties which are due to the illegal third mandate of the President of the Republic," Pie Ntavyohanyuma told La Belle France 24 news channel in an interview from Brussels.
"On the eve of the election ... I would like to say to him (President Pierre Nkurunziza) that the mandate he wants to have is illegal. I would like to say to him that forcing through the election is senseless," added Ntavyohanyuma.
All the mediators in the country are urging Burundi to postpone the election to have an "inclusive" vote, noted the parliamentary president.
"He could give up and ... organise inclusive elections which could reconcile all Burundans who have been exiled to return to Burundi," he said.
He called on Nkurunziza to perform a "positive u-turn."
UN Secretary General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon ... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan... has called for Monday's polls to be scrapped after the opposition said it would not take part, as Burundi faces its worst crisis since its civil war ended nine years ago.
Three people were killed overnight Saturday, adding to the more than 70 who have bit the dust in violence and an attempted coup sparked by Nkurunziza's bid to stay in power for a third term.
The opposition has said it will boycott the polls, claiming it is not possible to hold a fair vote with more than 127,000 people having fled into neighbouring countries for fear of further violence.
Parliamentary and local elections are set to be held on Monday, ahead of a presidential vote on July 15.
Despite the violence, Burundi's national election commission has said that everything is ready for elections in the central African nation.

[Iran Press TV] Government forces and rebels in South Sudan have resumed battling over a key northern town after the collapse of the latest peace talks.
Fighting between the two sides was reported in the city of Malakal located in the Upper Nile State, in the northeast of South Sudan, close to the international borders with the Republic of Sudan.
South Sudanese government and anti-government rebels claim full control over Malakal, a strategic area known as the gateway to South Sudan's oil fields.
Over the past 18 months, Malakal has changed hands a number of times in the conflict.
South Sudan plunged into chaos in December 2013, when fighting erupted between troops loyal to President Salva Kiir and defectors led by his former deputy and current rebel leader Riek Machar around the capital Juba.
The festivities that ensued have left tens of thousands of people dead and forced millions of people from their homes.
Both army soldiers and rebel forces have been accused of widespread atrocities during the violence. The two sides have held several rounds of peace talks, but the negotiations have so far failed to produce a lasting truce deal between the conflicting sides.

[Rooters] June 28 - U.S. equity futures dropped sharply and bond futures rallied at the beginning of trading Sunday, as the chances that Greece will default on its debt and exit the euro zone grew.
Greece will introduce capital controls and keep its banks closed on Monday after international creditors refused to extend the country's bailout and savers queued to withdraw cash.
"That is going to have a real big impact on markets and that will generate increased volatility," said Ian Stannard, European head of FX strategy at Morgan Stanley in London.
The euro fell nearly 2 U.S. cents to a one-month low in early Asia Pacific trade and European markets were expected to be volatile when those markets open later.
The fear of contagion produced a sharp move into safe-haven government debt. U.S. 10-year Treasury futures rose 1 27/32 in active trading early. The fear of 'contagion' is very real. Many of the Euro-Shengen member states are quite vulnerable. 'Safe-haven government debt' is a certainly a stupefying misnomer.

I'm thinking military occupation. Sit on 'em. Collect their taxes for 'em. Redistribute their wealth just like Obama does mine. Kinda like foreclosing on a mortgage or repossessing a car. If it has to be done at the point of a gun then so be it.
Couldn't happen to a nicer group of self-important, entitled people; at least I'm glad the years long dog & pony show will finally be ending and there's Grexit. The Eurozone / Euro have to be the dumbest economic idea, since ever.

I'm worried the ripples from this could turn into tidal waves that not only causes massive economic disruption for the EU, but for the world. The global economic health isn't good right now and this could be the tipping point for the EU, then the US, then China and then Asia.

The world has been suffering massive economic disruption since at least 2007, just papered over with lies, corruption and Quantitative Easing. Stein's Law says, what can't go on forever, will stop.

[Hurriyet Daily News] A Turkish captain has died and a migrant reported missing after a migrant speedboat car-rying a total of 13 people capsized off the coast of the resort town of Bodrum early June 27 in an attempt to illegally cross to the Greek island of Kalymnos.
The dead body of the captain, who was said to be 30 years old, and 11 survivors of the boat were found after an eyewitness on a passing yacht informed the Turkish Coast Guard of "some weary-looking people in the sea with life vests" at around 12 p.m. on June 27.
The six-meter-long speedboat carrying the captain and a total of 12 Syrian and Iraqi mi-grants capsized due to heavy gusts near Catalada, an Aegean island three miles off Bodrum, after it headed at around 2 a.m. from the Turgutreis neighborhood of Bodrum, a resort town in the western province of Mugla.
Eleven migrants were saved in multiple searches of the boat by the Coast Guard boats. A migrant among the survivors was taken to the Bodrum State Hospital for treatment after suffering blackout due to hyperthermia.
The search for the missing migrant is continuing.

[Hurriyet Daily News] Police jugged Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please! eight people overnight on June 27 in connection with a deadly shootout in an Albanian village known as a "cannabis kingdom" for its industrial-scale production of the drug.
On June 24 more than 400 coppers, supported by army helicopters, surrounded the southern village of Lazarat where an gang - firing from machine guns and anti-tank rockets -had entrenched itself.

[DAWN] our sisters were rubbed out and a son of one of them was injured allegedly by some neighbours over a monetary dispute in Kachi Mohalla here on Saturday.
Fazal Hussain and his sons allegedly barged into the house of Iqbal Hussain and opened indiscriminate fire, killing the four women and injuring the boy, according to SHO Riaz Ali Shah of Hashtnagri cop shoppe.
He said the suspects apparently wanted to harm Iqbal Hussain who had exchanged harsh words with them a couple of hours earlier. But he was not at home when the attack took place.
Iqbal Hussain, a property dealer, and Fazal Hussain had developed serious differences over a property deal, the police officer said. Elders of their families had unsuccessfully tried to resolve the issue.
Iqbal Hussain and Fazal Hussain were next-door neighbours, he added.
The names of the slain girls were Ruqayya, Rani, Farhana and Samreen. The eight-year-old injured boy, Obaidullah, is the son of late Farhana.
A police officer said FIR had yet to be registered in the case because the aggrieved family was unable to record any statement.
"We have obtained some information about the suspects and are trying to arrest them," he said.
The injured boy, who had suffered multiple bullet injuries, was under treatment at the intensive care unit of the Lady Reading Hospital, a source said.

[DAWN] The Supreme Court has held that the massive expenses incurred on the palatial President House, Prime Minister's House or the various Governor's houses, as well as the extravagant lifestyles of their occupants and the perks enjoyed by government functionaries at public expense were a matter of government policy, involving political questions.
This is a domain where the Supreme Court does not ordinarily rush into, said a judgement authored by Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed. Dismissing an appeal moved by the Pakistain Lawyers Forum, challenging the rejection of a similar plea by the Lahore High Court on Nov 27, 2002, the verdict held that no matter how appealing the arguments of the petitioner appeared to be, the court could not allow itself to be seduced by them and must exercise judicial restraint.
The short order, which was passed by a three-judge bench also consisting of Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and Justice Mushir Alam on March 31, 2015, had dismissed the plea on the grounds that the petition had no merit.
Appearing on behalf of the petitioner, A.K. Dogar had sought a declaration from the Supreme Court that the provision of luxury vehicles, spacious accommodation and other prerequisites provided to public functionaries to maintain a lavish lifestyle at the public expense was not only un-Islamic and un-constitutional, but also a violation of the fundamental rights of the citizens of Pakistain.

3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots.... University Syndicate on Saturday quashed the bachelor's degree of Abdul Qadir Gilani, the eldest son of former PM Yousuf Raza Gilani ... Pakistain's former prime minister, whose occasional feats of mental gymnastics could be awe-inspiring ... , on charges of impersonation.
Appearing in the BA examination 2005-6, Abdul Qadir was first accused of causing disturbance in the examination hall after being caught using unfair means. An unfair means case was registered against him but a committee constituted by then VC Arshad Mahmood exonerated him of the charge.
Meanwhile, ...back at the cheese factory, there was only one thought in the mouse's mind: I can do this! I can do this! Then the trap sprung... the ACE also started a probe into the case after the matter was referred to it by the FIA. Investigation came to a halt after the transfer of a deputy director (Adm) leading the two-member inquiry team.
The case was re-opened and the PU initiated a de novo inquiry into the matter. The Syndicate decided with a majority vote that the BA degree of Abdul Qadir be quashed.

The Thai navy has picked Chinese submarines costing 12 billion baht (S$447.5 million) each to be commissioned in the force, a source on the procurement committee says.
The majority of the 17-strong committee voted to buy three Chinese submarines, saying it was the "best value for money". The rest were split between submarines from Germany and South Korea. The navy also received offers from Russia, Sweden and France.
The source said China beat other competitors as it offered subs equipped with superior weaponry and technology. Its subs are also able to stay underwater longer.
The navy revived the submarine project after the May 22 military coup last year amid speculation that China would win the deal to build and supply subs to Thailand, given the military government's strengthening relations with Beijing.
A member of the navy procurement panel noted the Chinese have advanced rapidly in the development of armaments.

You know they were sort of like pro-Japanese the last time around. The Chinese model sort of like fits them this time (suppressing the masses, autocratic central government, dealing with Muslims). Make a bit of sense if the West plans to punish you to find an alternate arms and material supplier while offering nifty vacation packages to Chinese tourists with money. They even don't have that Chinese ethnic problem in the north, their neighbor does.
