Tunisia policemen Killed in Clashes with Jihadists
[AnNahar] Four coppers were killed and several others maimed Monday in separate festivities with suspected jihadists in Tunisia, which has seen a surge in radical Islam since the 2011 uprising.

The interior ministry blamed an al-Qaeda-linked group for one attack and said "terrorists" -- the term it uses for jihadists -- were involved in the second.

In the first clash in central Tunisia, three coppers and a jihadist were killed when national guardsmen, acting on a tip-off, tried to ambush two gunnies who were allegedly planning attacks, it said.

"The national guard attempted to ambush at dawn two gunnies on a cycle of violence in Sidi Ali Ben Aoun after obtaining information that (they) were about to launch an operation," ministry front man Mohammed Ali Aroui told AFP.

He said two officers were killed in the ensuing shoot-out, and that the snuffies fled before killing a third policeman who had been going to work.

They were pursued by an elite unit of the national guard, Aroui said.

"One of the gunnies was exterminated, the second was maimed and locked away

. He is in a serious condition," he added.

Twelve people were maimed, including three members of the security forces, a soldier and eight bystanders, an official at the nearby Sidi Bouzid hospital told AFP.

One civilian was in a critical condition, the official added.

The interior ministry blamed the violence on Tunisia's main jihadist group, the al-Qaeda-linked Okba Ibn Nafaa Brigades which it has accused of being behind several recent attacks.

"The two terrorists... belong to Okba Ibn Nafaa," Aroui said, although he did not identify them.

Authorities have blamed the group for a series of attacks, including the March massacre at the Bardo National Museum in Tunis that killed 21 foreign tourists and a policeman although the Islamic State

group had grabbed credit for the museum killings.

-- Shoot-out near Algeria border --
In the second incident on Monday, a Tunisian policeman was killed and four maimed in festivities with jihadists on the border with Algeria, Aroui said.

"A national guardsman was martyred and four others maimed in Jendouba region on the border with Algeria during a shoot-out with a terrorist group," Aroui told AFP.

He said police backed by troops had launched a search operation for the assailants.

The Tunisian army has been battling snuffies in the rugged Mount Chaambi region near the border with Algeria since 2012.

Tunisia has seen a surge in radical Islam since veteran president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was ousted in the 2011 revolution.

Dozens of members of the security forces have been killed since then in jihadist attacks.

The bloodiest single attack was in July 2014, when jihadists killed 15 soldiers on Mount Chaambi, considered to be a main rear base of the myrmidons.

In May, the United States announced the delivery of 52 Humvee military vehicles and a patrol boat to help Tunisia counter jihadist violence and ward off the insecurity of neighboring Libya.

The 52 HMMWVs aim "to improve force mobility" of the Tunisian army, the U.S. embassy in Tunis said at the time.

Update from An Nahar at 11:20 ET:
IS Jihadists Claim Deadly Attack on Tunisia Police

The jihadist Islamic State group on Tuesday claimed responsibility for an attack in central Tunisia that killed three policemen and wounded 12.

In a statement posted on Twitter, IS said the attack in the Sidi Bouzid region was carried out by "two soldiers of the caliphate who attacked two military sites with small arms."

The group, which claimed a March attack on the Bardo National Museum in Tunis that killed 21 foreign tourists and a policeman, said it had "killed or wounded more than 20 soldiers or national guard members" in Monday's violence.

Three policemen and a jihadist were killed when national guardsmen, acting on a tip-off, tried to ambush two armed men who were allegedly planning attacks, the interior ministry said.

"The national guard attempted to ambush at dawn two terrorists on a motorcycle in Sidi Ali Ben Aoun after obtaining information that (they) were about to launch an operation," ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui told AFP.

He said two officers were killed in the ensuing shootout, and that the militants fled before killing a third policeman who had been going to work.

They were pursued by an elite unit of the national guard, Aroui said.

"One of the terrorists was exterminated, the second was wounded and arrested. He is in a serious condition," he added.

Libyan Islamist says US strike missed al-Qaida-linked leader
[Ynet] The US military says it launched weekend Arclight airstrikes targeting and likely killing an al-Qaeda-linked bully boy leader in eastern Libya charged with leading the attack on a gas plant in Algeria in 2013 that killed at least 35 hostages, including three Americans.

An Islamist with ties to Libyan bully boys, however, said the Arclight airstrikes missed Mokhtar Belmokhtar, instead killing four members of a Libyan extremist group the US has linked to the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

US officials said they are still assessing the results of the Saturday strike, but Pentagon front man Col. Steve Warren said the military believes the strike was successful and hit the target. Neither US officials nor the Libyan government provided proof of Belmokhtar's death, which likely requires a DNA test or an announcement by Belmokhtar's group that he was killed.
Rudaw adds:
But this isn't the first time authorities have claimed to have killed Belmokhtar, a hard boy believed to be in his 40s who reportedly lost his eye in combat and fought in Afghanistan. He was one of a number of Islamist fighters who have battled Algeria's government since the 1990s, later joining al-Qaeda.

Intelligence officials say Belmokhtar essentially built a bridge between AQIM and the underworld, creating a system where various blends of outlaws now support each other and enroll local youth. He's been linked to terror attacks and the lucrative kidnapping of foreigners in the region.

The US filed terrorism charges in 2013 against Belmokhtar in connection with the Algeria attack. Officials have said they believe he remained a threat to US and Western interests. Belmokhtar had just split off from al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb to start his own franchise.

The Libyan government in a statement Sunday said that the strike targeting Belmokhtar came after consultation with the US so that America could take action against a terror leader there.

One government official in Libya said an Arclight airstrike in the northeastern coastal city of Ajdabiya hit a group of Islamic hard boyz also believed linked to al-Qaeda and that it killed five and maimed more. He said the group that was maimed later fought the Libyan military that guarded the hospital there, leading to an hourslong battle. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to news hounds. The official couldn't confirm that was the same strike that killed Belmokhtar.

The Islamist, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals in restive Libya, told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named early Monday that Belmokhtar wasn't at the site of the US Arclight airstrike. He said the strike killed four Ansar Shariah members in Ajdabiya, some 850 kilometers east of the Libyan capital, Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
American officials have linked Ansar Shariah to the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi.

Bombs down two electricity pylons in Giza
[AlAhram] Electricity was blocked to a number of districts in Giza governorate after bombs brought down pylons

Unknown assailants bombed three electricity pylons in Giza's Awsim late Sunday, which led to a power outage in a number of districts, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Two of the pylons collapsed, while the third did not, a security source told Al-Ahram.

Power cuts affected the Awsim, El-Baragil and Hadabet El-Ahram districts.

Infrastructure and security forces have been frequently targeted by bombs since Islamist president Mohammed Morsi was ousted from power in July 2013.

In May, three high voltage electricity pylons were brought down by bombs in Beheira governorate.

In April, the Egyptian Media Production City (EMPC) witnessed a power cut that led to several TV channels going off air due to attacks on electricity pylons.

10 Dead in Two Blasts in NE Nigeria
[AnNahar] Ten people were killed in twin suicide kabooms in Potiskum, northeast Nigeria

told AFP on Monday.

Eight vigilantes were killed in the first blast in the Igwanda area of the city at about 12:15 pm (1115 GMT) while two died in the second outside a tavern and brothel in the Dorawa area.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Potiskum, the commercial capital of Yobe state, has been hit repeatedly by Boko Haram in its six-year insurgency, including by jacket wallahs.

The first attack targeted the civilian vigilante office in the Igwanda area of the city and came after a man seen carrying laptops and other computer accessories was detained.

"We suspected he was a thief and then when he couldn't explain how he came about the things that were found on him, we took him to our office for interrogation," said one vigilante group member.

"But we didn't know he had explosives on him. He detonated the explosives and we lost eight men, including our commander," said the vigilante, who asked not to be named for his own safety.

A police source in Potiskum confirmed the attack. "We took eight dead bodies of the vigilante men to the hospital and the remains of the suicide bomber."

The second blast happened moments later in the Dorawa area of Potiskum at an open air tavern and brothel that has previously been hit by the Islamists.

The same police source said a man suspected to be a bomber was chased by an angry mob and set off his explosives before he was caught.

"Two people have been confirmed dead," he added.

Boko Haram are keen to prove they are not a spent force despite a four-nation military offensive that has run them out of captured towns and villages since February this year.

The use of improvised bombs and suicide kabooms has increased since May 29, when President Muhammadu Buhari took office vowing to crush the hard boys.

At least 162 people have been killed in some 17 separate attacks in that period, according to AFP reporting.

23 Dead in Suicide Bomb Attacks on Chad Police
[AnNahar] Twenty-three people were killed on Monday in suicide kabooms targeting police in the Chadian capital that the government said was the work of Boko Haram

holy warriors.

They were the first such attacks in the capital of the central African nation, which has been on the frontline of the regional fight against the Nigerian Islamist group.

"Boko Haram chose the wrong target. These lawless and faithless forces of Evil will be flushed out and neutralized wherever they are," the government said in a statement.

It said 23 people were killed and another 101 maimed in the simultaneous bombings outside the police headquarters and police academy in N'Djamena.

It said four "terrorists" were also killed, but did not give details. Earlier, a police official had told AFP that two jacket wallahs carried out the attacks, which came as police cadets were attending a training course at the academy.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The government said the situation was quickly brought under control, but the unprecedented assault on the capital prompted the creation of a "crisis cell" and vehicles with darkened windows were banned from N'Djamena.

Large numbers of members of Chad's security forces were also seen taking up positions on the streets.

President Idriss Deby was expected to return home during the day from an African Union

summit in Johannesburg, an official said.

In his absence, government ministers held a crisis meeting to discuss the bombings.

and Niger that was created to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency after the group stepped up cross-border attacks.

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau has on several occasions threatened to attack Chad and other countries in the coalition.

Gay Paree condemned Monday's blasts, with a foreign ministry front man saying La Belle France "stands alongside Chad and its partners in the fight against terrorism".

and the French army has set up its headquarters for the campaign in N'Djamena.

Last week, Abuja hosted a summit where Nigeria and fellow coalition members plus Benin rubber-stamped an 8,700-strong regional force to replace the current four-nation grouping.

The long-awaited Multi-National Joint Task Force, which had originally been due to become operational in November, has its headquarters in N'Djamena, under a senior Nigerian officer.

2 injured in shooting at Air Force base in Arkansas
[FOXNEWS] Two people were hospitalized after shots were fired when a civilian tried to gain unauthorized access to the Little Rock Air Force Base Monday morning.

The base said the suspect was transported to a local hospital at death's door. A bystander was also transported for non-related medical care and was released.

The base went on lockdown after the incident.

Jacksonville Police Sgt. Dustin Brown said the suspect had attempted to gain access to the base, which is in Jacksonville and about 15 miles northeast of Little Rock. A bomb squad was checking a green SUV parked near a visitor center at the base's main gate.

The air base closed its gates to inbound and outbound traffic after the 9:15 a.m. incident.

"Base officials will continue to coordinate with Jacksonville Police Department, the Air Force Office of Special Investigation and the FBI," a statement from the base said.

Killings Spark Fear in Indian Kashmir
[AnNahar] Unidentified gunnies rubbed out a former turban in Indian-administered Kashmire on Monday, the fourth apparently assassination in a week in the restive Himalayan region.

Police said the attackers shot Aijaz Ahmed Reshi near his home in Sopore, 45 kilometers (28 miles) northwest of the main city of Srinagar, triggering panic among residents.

"He (Reshi) was struck down in his prime. He was a surrendered terrorist," deputy inspector general of police for the area, Gareeb Dass, told AFP.

The killing led to festivities between demonstrators and government forces elsewhere in the region, with police firing tear gas to disperse protesters.

The assassinations began Tuesday when unknown gunnies shot and killed an activist with the group which is led by Kashmire's top separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani.

That was followed by the liquidation of two more activists, one a sympathizer of the same separatist group and another a former rebel, on Friday and Sunday.

Dass said initial police investigations indicated Hizbul Mujahideen Death Eaters may be behind the attacks.

Hizbul Mujahideen is one of several rebel groups fighting for independence or a merger of the territory with Pakistain.

Tens of thousands of people have died in the revolt that broke out in 1989, most of them civilians.

But the manner of the latest killings has panicked some separatist activists and former rebels.

Geelani last week compared them to assassinations of the mid-1990s, when government-sponsored militias known as Ikhwanis killed a number of rebels and separatist activists.

Kashmire has been divided between India and Pakistain since the two countries won independence from Britannia in 1947. Each claims the disputed territory in its entirety.

Iraq
Iraqi jets and mortar teams target ISIS in Anbar and Salahadin
[Rudaw] Fighter jets from the Iraqi air force in cooperation with Iraqi police mortar regiments bombarded ISIS positions in contested areas of the Salahadin and Anbar provinces Monday, an Iraqi Interior Ministry official said in a statement.

"Mortar attacks destroyed several ISIS arsenals and stockades in the town of Husseiba east of Ramadi, killing seven murderous Moslems and destroying the group's positions and bases," said Saad Maan, a spokesperson for the Iraqi Interior Ministry.

Maan added that Iraqi fighter jets also targeted a number of ISIS convoys in the Haqol Ajul area in Salahadin province, destroying five of the group's convoys and killing all the murderous Moslems inside the vehicles.

In a separate announcement, Brigadier General Raeed Jawdat, an Iraqi police commander, said Monday the Iraqi army and ISIS were locked in an intense battle in the Fatha area in eastern Salahadin province. He claimed 40 ISIS murderous Moslems and 17 Iraqi police were killed in the fighting.

Official: 57 killed in intense Salahadin battle with ISIS
[Rudaw] At least 57 fighters from ISIS and Iraqi security forces were killed in an intense fight in Iraq's Salahadin province, a security official told local media on Sunday.

Raid Jawdat, an Iraqi Federal Police commander, estimated that 40 ISIS fighters and 17 members of Iraqi security forces died in a battle for Fatha area in Salahadin province.

The Shiite militia called the Badr Organization claimed in a blurb on Sunday their forces managed to repel the ISIS gunnies in the Fatha area and killed 30 hard boyz while destroying the group's armored vehicles.

The majority of Salahadin province was liberated over the last few months by Iraqi forces led by the Shiite militias and tribal gunnies.

ISIS was driven out of the quiet provincial capital Tikrit in April with air support from the US-led coalition.

Southeast Asia
Five foreign militants join Abu Sayyaf
[Gulf Today] Five foreign extremists, led by a former member of the Malaysian Army Special Forces, were confirmed to have joined the Abu Sayyaf in Mindanao, according to a top official.

Military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Harold Cabunoc said that another Malaysian national was spotted with members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters. He said the Malaysian soldier went AWOL before joining Abu Sayyaf militants on the island provinces of Basilan and Sulu where they operated with impunity.

Cabunoc disclosed that they were still checking reports that the foreign extremists were part of a group claiming to be supporters of Daesh that aimed to establish an caliphate in the Middle East particularly in Iraq and Syria. He said, "We have monitored the presence of the foreign fighters in Basilan since last year but we could not ascertain their affiliation with Daesh as they claimed."

He said their claim of ties with Daesh could just be part of a scheme by the Abu Sayyaf and their foreign supporters to solicit funds.

Cabunoc also reported that a suspected Abu Sayyaf militant was killed in a clash in a remote village in the town of Indanan, Sulu on Thursday. Cabunoc said a soldier was injured in the clash amid reports that the militants were seen carrying away the bodies of at least five of their dead comrades as they fled

several Syrians in the eastern Bekaa region on terrorism charges.

"Army intelligence agents arrested a terrorist group comprising 4 Syrians in Jib Janine and Kamid el-Loz in western Bekaa," LBCI television reported in the evening.

Earlier in the day, the military said it detained Mohammed Kamel Roq, Haeb Hussein Haider, and Anas Hassan al-Masri on suspicion of belonging to terrorist groups.

They were held in the Hrabta and al-Labweh regions in the Bekaa, it said.

In Beirut's Haret Hreik neighborhood, the army detained two wanted Lebanese on shooting charges and another citizen for the possession of equipment used to produce explosives.

Earlier, 28 Syrians were arrested in the border region of al-Masnaa in the east for illegally entering Leb, added the military in a separate communique.

All detainees have been referred to the relevant authorities for investigation.

Young men of Druze minority quit conscription
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Number of young men of Syria's Druze minority, who joined regime army to figh rebels south Syria, have quitted conscription saying regime has breached a promise to not get them involved in fight out of Sweida province, their historic stronghold, activists said Sunday.

Local activists also said that tens of young people had attacked an office belongs to state ruling party in al-Mefa'leh village expressing their anger.

The young men said regime army wanted them to fight against moderate rebels in Daraa to regain Liwa 52, the biggest army brigade south of Syria.

Activists circulated footage for prominent Druze leader, Sheikh Wahid al-Balous, saying Druze youth will not join Syrian Army. The main mission of Druze community is to protect their stronghold in Arab Mount, he added.

Last few days, members of Druze minority helped Army in thwarting a rebel attack on al-Thala air base, mobilizing to confront holy warriors including al Qaeda's Nusra Front.

A Druze leader from Sweida said young men from the city had helped recapture the airbase. A rebel leader confirmed that the government side had sent reinforcements to the base.

The Druze leader, Sheikh Abu Khaled Shaaban, said young men from Sweida had deployed in several areas including the airport under the umbrella of the National Defense Force and "popular committees" that are battling alongside the Syrian army. State TV said dozens of Sweida residents had joined the army and NDF, according to Rooters.

Some Druze leaders have warned of an existential threat facing their kin after Nusra Front fighters rubbed out 20 people in a Druze village in northwestern Syria on Wednesday - an incident ignited by Nusra's attempt to confiscate a house, Rooters said..

Rebels and Islamist jihadis launched new offensive early Monday to capture parts of al Ashrafia, seeking to capture parts under regime control.

Meanwhile,

Syrian Kurds claim capture of border town from Islamic State
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Syrian Kurdish-led forces said they had captured a town at the Turkish border from Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. on Monday, driving it away from the frontier in an advance backed by U.S.-led air strikes that has thrust deep into the jihadists' Syria stronghold, Rooters said.

The capture of Tel Abyad by the Kurdish YPG and smaller Syrian rebel groups means the Syrian Kurds effectively control some 400 km (250 miles) of the Syrian-Turkish border that has been a conduit for imported muscle joining Islamic State.

While the advance has brought the well-organized YPG deep into Islamic State's stronghold of Raqqa province, it has also concerned The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

, which is worried the expansion of Kurdish sway risks inflaming separatist sentiment among its Kurdish minority.

The YPG-led forces also seized control of the road linking Tel Abyad to the Islamic State's de facto capital of Raqqa city, about 50 miles (80 km) to the south, cutting off a supply route which Islamic State had used to send reinforcements.

Tel Abyad, on the border with Turkey, has been a main conduit for Islamic State to smuggle weapons and oil.

The YPG-led forces had advanced into Raqqa after making big gains against Islamic State in neighboring Hasaka province since early May, also with the help of the U.S.-led alliance.

While Islamic State was being driven back in Hasaka, it was advancing elsewhere in Syria against government forces, notably in Palmyra, which the jihadists seized from the government in mid-May.

The fighting near the border has forced more than 18,000 people to cross into Turkey from Syria, aid workers say. A further 5,000 are believed to have crossed on Monday, according to a Rooters photographer at the scene.

Soldiers directed the people, many of whom were elderly, women and kiddies, through a passage in a barbed wire fence to a border facility, he said.

In a statement published on Sunday the YPG urged civilians not to leave Syria, saying it was guaranteeing "their security and all of their humanitarian needs".

Meanwhile,

and al-Shamiya Front, have denounced the ethnic and sectarian cleansing against Arab families in Tel Abyad and areas under Kurdish militias control.

The statement of key rebel groups said the forced displacement of Arabs falls under the partition scheme led by PKK and other regional parties.

Kurdish forces seize most of Islamic State-controlled border town
[REUTERS] The Syrian Kurdish YPG militia, aided by U.S.-led air strikes, have seized most of the town of Tel Abyad from Islamic State

hard boyz and pushed them back towards their de facto capital in Raqqa, a monitoring group said on Monday.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks Syria's civil war, said a handful of Islamic State fighters and their Arab tribal allies remained in a few pockets inside Tel Abyad near the Turkish border.

While dealing a blow to Islamic State, seizing Tel Abyad would help the YPG link up Kurdish-controlled areas of northern Syria. The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
is worried about the risk of separatist sentiment among its own Kurdish minority in the southwest.

The Kurdish thrust into Tel Abyad came from both east and west of the town where it brought troops from Hasaka province in the northeastern part of Syria and from Kobani, northwest of Tel Abyad. But U.S.-led coalition bombing of Islamic State positions in the town played a decisive role in repelling the jihadists.

Tel Abyad, on the frontier with Turkey, has been a main conduit for the hard boyz to smuggle weapons and oil.

The YPG has emerged as a key partner on the ground in Syria for the U.S.-led alliance that has been bombing Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. The Kurdish militia's advance into Raqqa province follows a campaign that drove Islamic State out of wide areas of neighbouring Hasaka province.
