[STARTRIBUNE] One adult and a juvenile were charged Friday after an armed carjacking early Thursday in north Minneapolis.
Justyn Tyler Hosley, 18, was charged with first-degree aggravated robbery and possession of a handgun as a felon. A 17-year-old was charged with aiding and abetting first-degree felony aggravated robbery.
About 4 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to an auto theft in progress in the area of 21st and Bryant Avenue N., according to the Hennepin County attorney's office.
According to the complaint, the victim was parked on Knox Avenue N. near 12th Avenue N. in Minneapolis when he was approached by four males, one of whom had a handgun. After one of the men reached into the victim's car and removed the keys from the ignition, the victim was held at gunpoint and ordered into the back seat. All four males got into the car and drove away, reportedly telling the victim, "We are taking your car," and threatening to kill him.
According to the complaint, the victim was eventually ordered out of the car while it was stopped at Cedar Lake Parkway and Lakeview Avenue S. and told to run. The man, who officials said is a disabled veteran, reached a residence and called 911.
Officers spotted the victim's car and during a foot chase, police fired and struck Hosley, who was believed to be armed. No officers were maimed.
Hosley and the 17-year-old were later found hiding in a back yard in the 2100 block of Dupont Avenue N. Hosley, who had a gunshot wound to his left leg, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center.

[PJ Media] Eric Sheppard -- the face of an anti-flag protest at Valdosta State University -- has been arrested in Tampa, Florida, after being on the run for over a month. But his lawyer says he's the victim of a huge misunderstanding.
According to Muwali Davis, Sheppard's attorney, he is "not a threat to the community" and he's "merely a college kid trying to figure out life under some extraordinary circumstances."
The Lowndes County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the 21-year-old Sheppard was apprehended Thursday morning at around 11:15 a.m. without incident.
On April 17, Sheppard was videotaped with other black radicals stomping on the American flag as part of a protest on campus. He clashed with Air Force vet Michelle Manhart when she snatched the flag away from the group in an attempt to prevent its desecration. Manhart, a former Playboy model, was briefly detained and banned from campus.
An arrest warrant was later issued for Sheppard after deputies found a gun that belonged to him in a backpack on Valdosta State University's campus. Authorities said Sheppard was also being investigated by the FBI for possibly making terroristic threats on social media.
Last week, Sheppard published a vicious manifesto filled with hate speech against white people.
WCTV reported that Sheppard was taken to the Hillsborough County Jail, where he will have an extradition hearing "in the near future." Note the use of the term of reference 'black radical.'
Beau Biden -- son of Vice President Joe Biden -- has died of brain cancer at 46, the White House confirmed in a statement Saturday. Too much tragedy in one life for one man, whomever he is. Very sad.
[Guardian] The US secretary of state, John Kerry, was in a stable condition in a Geneva hospital after being injured in an accident while cycling near Scionzier, France, his spokesman has said.
Kerry, 71, was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Geneva, where he was being examined, spokesman John Kirby said.
"Secretary Kerry is stable and likely suffered a leg injury. He did not lose consciousness," Kirby added.
Kerry suffered the accident near Scionzier, France, 25 miles (40km) south-east of the Swiss border. Paramedics and a physician were on the scene with his motorcade at the time.
A paramedic travelling with his motorcade immediately examined the secretary after his bike apparently hit a kerb, causing the fall, Kirby said. Kerry was transported to Geneva's main hospital, HUG, where he was being evaluated. X-rays were being taken of his right leg.
Update from An Nahar at 9:45: Secretary of State Kerry is being sent home for treatment by the doctor who did his hip surgery, and will miss discussions in Spain on the new Marine base and in Paris on ISIS.

As much as I enjoy the Kerry mockery (kerimakeri? is that some Japanese thing?), I give him props for being a 71 year old dude out there biking. Pedal on, Jawn. Pedal on, Harf.

Capital flight from Russia is forecast to hit $110 billion this year, the Economic Development Ministry said Thursday, as Western sanctions limit foreign investment and force Russian companies to pay off billions of dollars in foreign debt.
The ministry's base forecast anticipates that U.S. and EU sanctions over Moscow's actions in Ukraine will remain in place through the end of 2018.
"This means that Russian companies' access to world capital markets will remain limited and there will be quite a high level of capital outflow from the private sector due to debt repayments," the report said.
U.S. and EU sanctions imposed last year on Moscow for its role in the Ukraine crisis have closed off Russian companies' access to international financial markets, leaving them with a total of $109 billion in debt payments coming due this year and little chance of refinancing the loans, the Reuters news agency reported, citing Central Bank data.

MOSCOW -- Russian military aircraft were scrambled to head off a U.S. warship that was acting "aggressively" in the Black Sea, state news agency RIA reported on Saturday, citing an anonymous source in Russia's armed forces in Crimea. The source was quoted as saying that the U.S. destroyer Ross was moving along the edge of Russia's territorial waters and heading in their direction.
"The crew of the ship acted provocatively and aggressively, which concerned the operators of monitoring stations and ships of the Black Sea Fleet," RIA quoted the source as saying. "Su-24 attack aircraft demonstrated to the American crew readiness to harshly prevent a violation of the frontier and to defend the interests of the country."
Yawn...
Russia's Defence Ministry was not immediately available to comment on the report.
The incident is the latest example of encounters between Russian and Western militaries, as tensions continue over the crisis in Ukraine and Russia's annexation of the Crimea peninsula, home to Russia's Black Sea Fleet, last year.
No, it's more of the same usual game we've been playing with the Rooskies the last 70 years...
Earlier this month both Britain and Sweden said that they had scrambled fighters to intercept Russian bombers near their territory.
The United States said last month that it was filing a complaint to Russia over a Russian fighter's "sloppy" and unsafe interception of a U.S. reconnaisance plane in international aerospace over the Baltic Sea.

SINGAPORE -- China vigorously defended its South China Sea land reclamation projects in the face of persistent criticism from U.S. leaders at an international security summit Saturday as the standoff in the Asia-Pacific region shows few signs of abating.
U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter and other officials sharply condemned the artificial island-building, but provided no details on what steps the U.S. may take to press China into diplomatic talks. Carter said China's land reclamation was out of step with international rules,
Which ones?
and that turning underwater land into airfields would not expand its sovereignty.

[Forbes] Chinese diplomats have been on a global offensive to convey Chinese complaints. China's ambassador to the U.S., Cui Tiankai, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, said "we have to defend the facilities on these islands and reefs" while building up "for self-defense, not for attacking others." He warned the U.S. against "attempts to replay the Cold War in Asia."
The arrival of the Shiloh at Subic Bay, where the U.S. had a base from the early days of U.S. rule over the Philippines at the beginning of the last century, showed the close coordination between the U.S. and the Philippines over defense in the South China Sea.
U.S. officials in Manila said the Shiloh would stay in Subic Bay only long enough to refuel and take on other supplies before going on patrol in nearby waters. The question was whether the Shiloh, accompanied by other vessels, including destroyers and perhaps submarines, would enter waters close to the Chinese reclamation projects. The result would, at the least, provoke a fusillade of demands for the ships to go away as well as a critical comments from the Chinese officials and the Chinese media.
For Filipinos, the question was whether the occasional use of Subic Bay for U.S. navy vessels would be a precursor to a bygone era. U.S. forces withdrew from Subic, and from Clark Air Base across the Zambales mountains, in 1991, after the Philippines refused to renew its longstanding bases agreement with the U.S. The Philippine-American alliance, however, has remained in force with U.S. troops going to the Philippines for frequent military exercises and U.S. soldiers advising Philippine troops fighting Muslim rebels on the large southern Island of Mindanao and the outlying Sulu archipelago.
In recent years the U.S. and Philippines have coordinated still more closely under a "visiting forces agreement" that has aroused widespread controversy in the Philippines. In a still greater historical irony, President Aquino goes to Japan this week in search of support -- and perhaps assistance -- for the Philippine position.
Japan has extended massive economic aid to the Philippines but has refrained from military assistance to a country that still harbors bitter memories of a Japanese occupation that lasted more than three years after Japanese forces drove out the Americans at the outset of World War II. The Americans finally retook the Philippines after some of the bloodiest urban fighting of the war in and around Manila.

CHINA has to review + decide whether its GeoPol ambitions = "Manifest Destiny" is worth risking war throughout the East Asia Region, as the SCS is only of several fronts for PLA strategic access into the Far Pacific + IOR.
Iff China backs down, IMO it does so knowing that its National or Geopol, "post-US" agenda will likely become more difficult or harder to achieve as US Regional Allies become that much more Politically, Econ, + Militarily stronger over time - INSTEAD OF FEWER OR NO RIVALS FOR "SOLE" LEADERSHIP IN EAST ASIA + IOR, E.G. The important Religious Coalition, including but not limited to the Southern Baptist Convention, etal. that helped make the Reagan-Bush 41 era what it was has been way too silent on the issues.
[Daily Caller] A 17-year veteran of the State Department is taking aim at agency leadership, past and present, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, with a new website that alleges a culture of corruption at Foggy Bottom replete with misconduct and criminal cover-up. Higbie second from right in photo.
Richard Higbie has been locked in various legal battles with the State Department since he joined the agency's Diplomatic Security Service in 1998. In 2001, he filed a discrimination lawsuit claiming his bosses retaliated against him because of the ongoing medical treatment he had to provide his daughter, Logan, who was born with a rare genetic condition that causes seizures and tumors.
Through the course of his fight, Higbie, 42, has filed for whistle-blower protection. And by doing so he has attracted other whistle-blowers who have provided information on alleged misconduct at he highest levels of the State Department.
[WASHINGTON.CBSLOCAL] The legendary Bob Schieffer is calling it a career Sunday as he hosts his last "Face the Nation." G'bye, Bob.
Schieffer joined CBS News in 1969 and in that span he covered the White House, State Department, Pentagon, Capitol Hill, anchored the "CBS Evening News," and hosted "Face the Nation" the past 24 years. Did everything but mow the grass and take out the garbage, by Gum.
Washington has changed dramatically when he began covering the nation's capital. I think there should be a "since" instead of a "when" in there.
Schieffer told "CBS This Morning" on Friday that the "revolution in communications" has turned D.C. "upside-down." Do tell?
"We now don't know where people get their news, Depends on which people. Some get it from the Comedy Channel, which builds about the level of comprehension you'd expect.
but what we do know is they're bombarded with information 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Some watch Fox News or MSNBC or CNN, where "news" is all politix, all the time.
Most of the information is wrong and some of it is wrong on purpose," Schieffer said. Some people read the Drudge Report or Lucianne or the Huffington Post, each of which mixes politix with crime reporting and a bit of WoT.
"It is our job, I think, in mainstream journalism to try to cut through this mall of information and tell people what we think is relevant in what they need to know. Here at the Burg we scour foreign news sources as well as we can. Sometimes the raw data is wrong, sometimes it's outright lies. We've discovered that lies or outright wrong data tends to be self correcting. If Abu Adam al-Ameriki was killed last week that means he didn't eat dirt when we heard he was dead last year.
That is the job of the journalist and I have to say it's harder and harder." I've modeled the Burg on the (classified) intel reports I used to prepare back in the Upper Paleolithic. The content is unclassified and most of it's raw data, not in-depth analysis.
Schieffer also touched on the influx of money changing the way the government and campaigns are run. We don't "cut through this mall of information and tell people what we think is relevant in what they need to know." We dumpt the news raw and often bloody and sometimes covered with flies and stinking to high heaven.
"I mean our campaigns have become, 'I have more billionaires than you do so I'm a viable candidate.' I don't think that's what the founders had in mind when they started this country," he told "CBS This Morning." He's working from the assumption that all news is politix or vice versa.
"I don't know where this goes, but I think something is going to have to change on that front because what we have now is people have to sign up with so many special interests before they get to Washington, that once they're here they can't compromise. And when you have a government and a legislative body that can't compromise, you have what we have -- a legislative body that's in constant and total gridlock." That's life in an opaque bubble. There are evil people populating some parts of the rest of the world. They kill people and they torture them. Their occasional statements make the ravings of The Insidious Doctor Fu Manchu seem well thought out and devoted to the good of mankind. But what used to be the news ignores them as inconsequential twaddle next to the question of whether John Podesta's cross-dressing in a red Hillary pantsuit has any significance outside of poor taste.
Schieffer echoed similar comments during an interview with The News Agency that Dare Not be Named earlier this week, saying he's disturbed by the changes he's seen in Washington. It's a meaner place, he said, partially fueled by Internet anonymity but also by a lack of collegiality. Lawmakers of all stripes and their families used to know each other better but now spend more time in their districts and less time in the capital. Some families never move. Meaning the supply of free liquor's dried up?
It has led to an inability to get things done that Schieffer says is a greater danger to the country's future than terrorism. Ummm... No, it's not. If you live in an opaque bubble then terrorism is "over there," someplace beyond the limits of the bubble. But if you exist outside of the bubble you can see the people who want to kill your sons and sell your daughters in some sort of Oriental slave market.
"It has changed the people who run for office now," he said. "I don't mean they're bad people, but they're different. They have to raise so much money, they have to sign off with so many interest groups to get here that once they're here they can't compromise their positions. Their positions are set in stone." If you live outside the bubble you will eventually come to realize that the people there are individual human beings, not faceless members of "the masses." Some people are remarkably stoopid. If you watch C*O*P*S you'll see them in action. But other people (sometimes even the ones you see on C*O*P*S, just on a different day) are remarkably kind, remarkably productive, even sometimes remarkably noble. They don't go to Washington dinner parties, but they have lives that are worth living, too. They're human beings, and The News™ has an effect on their lives.

No Boob -er- Bob. Its not the job of the journalist to tell people what to think. That may be what they teach now in Journalism School but it's not the way it's supposed to be.
And if you don't know where people are getting their information - it kind of shows what a piss-poor 'journalist' you are doesn't it?
Sorry Boob -er- Bob but you are not the 'gatekeepers of information' anymore like you were back in the '70s during Cronkite's reign when he could turn a victory into a disaster and snap defeat from the jaws of victory.
Personally I think you and your ike should enjoy your retirement decorating a lamppost for the damage you've done to this country and the lives you destroyed. But that's just me.

It’s clear that Schieffer pines for the ole tymie days when The Big 3 controlled the bulk of the message. Some things too were much simpler in the buggy whip era I suppose. The "revolution in communications" didn’t sully journalism – the operators did.
