Three Wounded as UN Convoy Triggers Landmines in Mali
[ALMANAR.LB] Three United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
troops were maimed on Thursday when a convoy including the head of peacekeeping in Mali triggered landmines in the country's restive north, sources within the force said.

MINUSMA commander Major General Michael Lollesgaard and the mission's police chief "escaped death on Thursday in the Timbuktu region when mines on the route of their convoy maimed three peacekeepers from Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
", a civilian manager in the force told AFP.

Lollesgaard, from Denmark, and police commissioner Abdounasir Awale were on a field visit when a vehicle in their convoy hit at least one mine between the towns of Dire and Ber, a separate MINUSMA source based in Timbuktu told AFP.

The source said it was "very likely" that the mines had been laid just before the convoy arrived, specifically targeting the two commanders, as security checks had been carried out along the route a few hours earlier.

An official statement from MINUSMA placed the kaboom at 1:00 pm (1300 GMT), although it made no mention of Lollesgaard or Awale.

"MINUSMA strongly condemns this terrorist act which aimed to paralyze the mission's operations in this part of Mali," it said.

"Mines in Mali indiscriminately affect United Nations personnel and innocent civilians."

The attack came a day ahead of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers when member states and non-governmental organizations hold events to honor fallen troops.

on a Lake Chad island has killed four soldiers and 33 Islamists, a military front man said Friday.

"Boko Haram elements on Wednesday attacked our forces in Choua," military front man Colonel Azem Bermandoa Agouna told AFP, referring to a Lake Chad island in Chadian territory.

"The Chadian army violently repelled the attack. We killed 33 Boko Haram members and recovered several light arms and anti-tank grenades. We regret the loss of four soldiers and also recorded four maimed," Agouna.

He added that Chadian military planes had been targeting Boko Haram positions on the lake since Thursday and had destroyed food, fuel and munitions belonging to the holy warriors.

Since January, Chad has been part of a regional military operation aiming to oust the Islamist group from swathes of territory which it had seized in northeast Nigeria

and Niger.

In addition to the fighting in Nigeria, Boko Haram has launched repeated attacks in Niger and Chad.

Chadian soldiers have also fought the murderous Moslems in Cameroon's northern reaches, which has suffered from ongoing Boko Haram attacks in the last two years.

Sources in Chad's military say about 5,000 of its soldiers are taking part in the fight against Boko Haram. In April Chad announced that 71 of its troops had been killed in operations against the Islamists.

Arabia
4 dead as Saudi Arabia 'foils' attack on mosque
Riyadh: A car blast outside a Saudi mosque during Friday prayers killed four people, including its driver, in an attack that was 'foiled' by the authorities, the interior ministry said. Daesh has claimed responsibility for the attack.

“Authorities have managed to foil a terrorist crime targeting people performing the Friday prayers at Al Anoud mosque in Dammam,” capital of Eastern Province, said a ministry spokesman quoted by the Saudi Press Agency.

The explosion went off as security officials approached the car while it was being driven to a parking lot near the mosque, the spokesman said.

“When they headed towards it, it exploded killing four people, at least one of them believed to be its driver,” he said, adding that other nearby vehicles caught fire.

The blast is the second in a week after a suicide bombing on a mosque during Friday prayers in a village in Eastern Province killed 21 people.

Authorities have said that the attack on May 22 was carried out by from Daesh, who claimed responsibility.

A witnesses of the latest attack, Nassima Al Sada, said it was carried out by a suicide bomber who blew himself up after security volunteers tried to stop him from entering the ladies side of the mosque.

After last week’s attack, residents set up security committees to search those entering mosques during prayers, witnesses said. Women were not allowed to pray at the mosque this week over security fears, Sada said.

The interior ministry spokesman said that investigations were ongoing.

IS Jihadist Kills Self, 3 Others at Saudi Mosque

group grabbed credit.

Saudi officials claimed to have foiled the attack in Dammam. But the Islamic State said in a statement that the bomber, described as "a soldier of the caliphate, Abu Jandal al-Jazrawi," had managed to reach the site despite heightened security.

IS also grabbed credit for another suicide kaboom inside a Shi'ite mosque in the Saudi city of Qatif last Friday. Twenty-two people were killed in that blast.

Authorities said the more recent kaboom occurred as security officials approached the bomber's vehicle while it was being driven to a parking lot near the mosque. One witness said security volunteers tried to stop the vehicle from entering the women's side of the mosque.

Amateur video showed worshippers shouting and screaming after the sound of the blast outside the Anoud mosque. Other video showed fire engulfing at least half a dozen vehicles in a parking lot outside the building, as a thick cloud of black smoke filled the air.

Saudi Interior Ministry front man General Mansour Ben Turki told Saudi TV that tight security outside the mosque prevented the bomber from entering the building to blow himself up.

He said that security forces noticed a suspicious vehicle and prevented it from going further. The toll could have been worse if the bombing had happened inside the mosque among worshippers during prayers, he said.

Arab media reported that the jacket wallah was disguised as a woman, dressed in a black abaya and face veil. It was not immediately clear if the bomber was wearing a belt packed with explosives or if his vehicle was booby-trapped.

Saudi Arabia's top religious official, Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdel Aziz Al Sheikh, said those who were behind the bombing would be punished.
An Nahar adds:
After last week's attack, residents set up security committees to search those entering mosques during prayers, witnesses said.

Women were not allowed to pray at the mosque this week over security fears, Sada said.

Saudi-led forces also made four air strikes on a military base near the airport, a source in the southern militia told Rooters.

A Saudi-led coalition began air strikes in Yemen on March 26 in a campaign to restore Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to power. He fled in March, after Iranian-backed Houthi rebels seized the capital Sanaa in September and then thrust into central and south Yemen.

Aden is Yemen's commercial hub. Its airport has been closed since fighting began but its port provides sporadic access for desperately needed humanitarian aid to enter the country.

Saudi forces and the Houthis have been trading fire across the border since the Arab alliance began its military operations.

On Thursday, two Saudi border guards were killed and five maimed by shells fired from Yemen.

Intense air raids by the Arab alliance were also reported overnight by residents of Saada, a province in northwest Yemen which borders Saudi Arabia. Raids also targeted a weapons storage site in Sanaa, said residents.

"Said also served as a contact and recruiter of imported muscle from the United Kingdom and elsewhere traveling to Somalia to join al-Shabaab."

The pair also allegedly said they would support al-Qaeda and al-Nusra Front fighters by sending recruits to fight in Syria, according to the Justice Department.

The charges against the two men stemmed from a Miami-based investigation involving an FBI employee who enlisted the pair in a financial scheme to back the terrorist organizations, the Miami Herald newspaper reported earlier this year.

Said's sentencing is scheduled for August 14.

If convicted, he faces a maximum statutory sentence of 15 years in prison.

Suicide blast near Qaddafi Stadium kills sub-inspector
[DAWN] LAHORE: A blast near the premises of Qadaffy Stadium on Friday--which took place during a one-day international match between Pakistain and Zim-bob-we -- was confirmed as a suicide kaboom by Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid, who said a sub-inspector lost his life while trying to stop the jacket wallah.

Talking to a private news channel, Rashid said an attempt to attack the stadium was foiled by the gallantry of a police official, who lost his life while trying to stop the attacker near Kalma Chowk in Lahore.

The information minister praised the actions of Pakistain Broadcasters Association for "Covering up" the news while the cricket match was ongoing so as not to spread panic.

Local media had at first reported an kaboom close to Qadaffy stadium but reports were taken off air after it was claimed that the kaboom was caused by an electricity transformer in the area.

Later, Punjab

police's IG Operations, while addressing a press briefing said two people -- Sub-Inspector Abdul Majeed and a civilian Rizwan -- were killed in the blast, DawnNews reported.

But the senior police official claimed that the blast happened inside a rickshaw and that forensic samples had been collected from the site to determine the nature of the kaboom.

Woman riding pillion shoots motorcyclist dead
[DAWN] ISLAMABAD: A man was shot and killed by a woman riding behind him on a moving cycle of violence, on Thursday.

Police officials told Dawn that the victim had been identified as Bilal Safdar, a Pindigheb native who worked as a corporal technician in the Pakistain Air Force (PAF) and was stationed at the Nur Khan Air Base in Rawalpindi.

According to accounts pieced together by Sherlocks, the victim and his assailant were driving towards Rawalpindi down Agha Shahi Avenue, which is also known as 9th Avenue. After crossing the Jinnah Avenue junction, the woman -- who was riding pillion at the time -- pulled out a weapon and shot the victim in the back of the neck at point blank range.

"Circumstantial evidence suggests that she shot him while the vehicle was moving. As a result, the victim lost control over the bike, which fell to the ground," a police official told Dawn, adding that the woman disappeared from the scene by the time police arrived.

Shortly after hearing of the incident, police reached the scene and shifted the body to the Pakistain Institute of Medical Sciences for further processing. Police officials said that the scene of the crime was also examined and evidence found there was also collected.

Late on Thursday night, Sherlocks managed to identify the shooter as a Haripur native and said that the murder may have been a crime of passion. According to the Sherlocks, she wanted to marry the victim, but he had spurned her.

Iraqi authorities raise Baghdad attacks death toll to 15
[Rudaw] BAGHDAD -- The corpse count from bombings that targeted two prominent hotels in Baghdad a day earlier rose to 15 people, with another 42 maimed, Iraqi authorities said on Friday, as a politician warned that the capital is vulnerable to more attacks.

The double bombing occurred late Thursday when two separate boom-mobiles went off in the parking lots of the Cristal, formerly Sheraton, and Babil hotels. Initial reports said 10 people were killed and 27 maimed, but the casualty figures rose overnight.

The two kabooms shattered windows of the recently renovated hotels and destroyed several cars. Baghdad's top hotels are usually crowded on Thursday nights with people attending wedding celebrations or parties.

The twin attacks targeting heavily secured buildings in the heart of Baghdad demonstrate the boldness and freedom with which gunnies have been able to operate inside the capital. The two boom-mobiles were detonated by remote control, police said.

Police said a third boom-mobile found near the Babil Hotel was discovered and defused early Friday. A police officer blamed the infiltration on the negligence of the hotel guards and the weak security measures adopted by police in Baghdad.

In Friday's violence, police and hospital officials said a roadside kaboom hit a commuter bus in eastern Baghdad, killing three passengers and wounding 10 others.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

Sameer al-Shwaili, a front man for government's Anti-Terrorism Apparatus, said that more attacks on Baghdad are expected as military operations continue in an effort to drive out Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
gunnies from the Sunni-majority provinces of Anbar and Salahuddin.

"The situation is directly related to operations in Anbar, and operations in Tikrit. Iraq is in a state of war and what happened in Baghdad is a product of that war," al-Shwaili told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named in a telephone interview.

Nobody has grabbed credit for the attacks, but al-Shwaili placed the blame on the Islamic State group.

"Car bombs and bombs are typically used by Daesh in a way to create fear among the citizens of Iraq," he said, using the Arabic acronym for the ISIS group.

Baghdad-based security expert Muataz Muhei said that Baghdad coppers and hotel security guards often lack the expertise and needed to deal with the kind of security challenges presented by the Islamic State group.

"Daesh chose those well-protected sites in order to display to the public that they are still able to hit hard targets," said Muhei.

Iraq witnesses almost daily attacks that have been frequently claimed by the Islamic State group -- which seized large swaths of the country during a blitz last year and recently overran the city of Ramadi, bustling provincial capital of Anbar province.

Fighting also continues in several parts of Salahuddin province, where government forces -- backed by Shiite militias and Arclight airstrikes from the US-led coalition -- took back the city of Tikrit from ISIS gunnies earlier this year.

Twin blasts injure more than a dozen at Jolo police mosque
[Philippine Star] Philippine security forces launched a massive search for the bombers that on Friday night set off two bombs near a mosque in a police camp in Jolo town in Sulu. More than a dozen people were wounded, including four grade school children.

Reports indicate that the first victim in the initial blast was a wife of a policeman, who sustained shrapnel wounds when a still unidentified bomber hurled a fragmentation grenade near a mosque at one side of Camp Asturias, the command center of the Sulu provincial police, near downtown Jolo.

A more powerful improvised explosive device, planted just several meters away from where the grenade went off, exploded just as responding policemen were trying to cordon the scene for investigation.

Indonesian Police Shoot Dead Two Terror Suspects
[AnNahar] Indonesian police have rubbed out two suspected Islamic Lions of Islam and tossed in the calaboose

seven others in raids in an area known as a terror hotbed, an official said Monday.

The force's elite anti-terror unit killed the two men during a firefight on Sunday in a village in Poso district on Sulawesi island, said national police front man Agus Rianto.

"When we tried to arrest them, they resisted. There was a firefight and two from the group were killed," he said, adding that two coppers were maimed.

Seven suspected Lions of Islam have been arrested over several days, including five in the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar, Rianto said.

The front man said they were linked to the country's most-wanted Islamic Lion of Islam named Santoso. He leads the Eastern Indonesia Mujahideen holy warrior group, which hides out in the jungles on central Sulawesi.

The world's most populous Moslem-majority nation has struggled with Islamic extremism for more than a decade, facing a series of attacks on Western targets, although a crackdown has weakened the most dangerous networks.

The Lions of Islam on Sulawesi are thought to be among the few that remain a real threat in Indonesia. They regularly launch attacks but these tend to target Indonesian security forces and be low-impact.

But fears are growing about the influence of the Islamic State

group, with some worried that Indonesians returning from fighting in Iraq or Syria could revive sophisticated holy warrior networks.

Al Qaeda led Syrian hard boys advance in Idlib
BEIRUT -- Activists say militants led by Al Qaeda’s branch in Syria are advancing in the northwestern province of Idlib after capturing a government stronghold.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees said Friday that the so-called Fatah Army has captured several villages near the town of Ariha, which the insurgents seized the day before. Ariha had been one of the last major government strongholds in Idlib. The Fatah Army includes seven Syrian armed factions and is led by Al Qaeda’s Nusra Front. Turkey and Saudi Arabia support the coalition.

The Observatory, which is based in Britain but relies on activists inside Syria, said militants killed 13 troops and pro-government gunmen after capturing them alive in Ariha. It says 18 others were killed as they fled the town.

#1  I am curious why the opposition to ISIS/AQ has not yet realized the necessity of fighting to the death once engaged with their enemy, since surrendering or running has pretty much the same result, without even the satisfaction of taking some of the bastards with them.

#3  That's right. Most of government conscripts are Sunni with no desire to kill other Sunnis.

An idea whose time has come
h/t Gates of Vienna
A Syrian Christian fighter has beheaded an Islamic State group (IS) militant to avenge people "executed" by the jihadists in northeastern Syria, a monitor said on Friday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the incident took place on Thursday in Hasakeh province, where IS holds large areas of the countryside.

#3  Unless the Christians and Arabs are slowing sawing the head off, or burning them alive, I don't see a problem. A quick and clean beheading seems a mercy compared to what ISIS has been doing.

#4  Something's got to give. ANd sooner or later it will. Then these jihadis will realize what a huge thing a real crusade will be - when Christians fight back.

#5  Unfortunately, OS, I really don't see today's Popes actually calling for a crusade. And even if they did, who would answer?

Kurdish fighters in Syria on the march against ISIS militants
[Rudaw] In contrast to the Iraqi army's failures, Kurdish fighters in Syria are on the march against the Islamic State

group, capturing towns and villages in an oil-rich swath of the country's northeast under the cover of U.S.-led Arclight airstrikes.

As the Kurds close in on Tel Abyad, a major commercial center on the Turkish border, their advance highlights the decisive importance of combining Arclight airstrikes with the presence of a cohesive and motivated ally on the ground -- so clearly absent in Iraq.
