[STARTRIBUNE] Authorities say the machete-wielding man who was shot at New Orleans' international airport after trying to attack passengers and security agents was carrying explosives at the time.
Sheriff Newell Normand said suspect Richard White, who was shot three times by a security agent late Friday after approaching a security checkpoint spraying insecticide and brandishing a machete, was also carrying a bag loaded with six Molotov cocktails -- six Mason jars with cloth wicks soaked in gasoline.
There was also a barbeque lighter and a letter opener in the bag, Normand said at a presser at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. Residue from smoke bombs was also found near White's body.
Normand says White is hospitalized with gunshot wounds and is currently sleeping soundly "unconscious."
The sheriff suggested that the suspect has had "mental health" issues. His family has been cooperating with the investigation.
The suspect, 63, is a Jehovah's Witness and has refused "certain types of medical care," Normand said. Don't touch me man! The bleeding will stop on it's own.
"Fortunately, he didn't seriously injure anybody," Normand said.

Richard White, 62, had been taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. He was listed in critical condition and unconscious Saturday, and died later Saturday afternoon, the Sheriff's Office said.
Glenmore submitted an article from the local paper, which adds a few facts about the attack:
Lt. Heather Slyve, a deputy sheriff stationed at the checkpoint, fired three rounds, striking White in the left chest area, the left facial area and the left thigh.
A TSA officer who was fleeing was shot in her upper arm. A traveler sustained a graze wound to his arm. Witnesses reported 3-4 shots - Lt. Slyve did a pretty good job - 3 in the perp & one in a TSA agent.

It's reported White died. I'm curious about him being a devout JW. What he did it totally contrary to their teachings. What was the motive?
Since the sheriff suggested he had "mental health issues", I suspect either unmedicated severe paranoid schizophrenia or unmedicated severe bipolar disorder, Brer Rabbit. Or sociopathy, which doesn't have any treatment.

I've gone through that checkpoint about 100 times, and the atmosphere is almost always relaxed and casual. To me it's really amazing that Lt Sylve got her act together quickly enough to put three shots on target. It must have been like going from zero to sixty in .2 seconds. But the cops in Jefferson Parish are generally pretty solid.

All this racism has me reacting in a strange way - when I saw the perp he was not a typical white guy, so I felt relief at that moment (no having to go thru the usual press jumping to conclusion about White Tea Party etc). That is very f'd up what the press has done in conditioning us that way.

The bill, SB 1968, was filed at the very end of the bill filing period for this Legislative Session last Friday, and would end the practice of automatic payroll deductions for labor union dues for the majority of public-sector unions.
SB 1968 amends Chapter 617, Texas Government Code, to add a new Section 617.006, titled "Prohibition on Collection of Labor Organization Dues," as follows:
Except as provided by Sections 141.008 and 155.001, Local Government Code, and Sections 403.0165 and 659.1031, Government Code, the state or a political subdivision of the state may not deduct or withhold, or contract to deduct or withhold, from an employee's salary or wages payment of dues or membership fees to a labor organization or other similar entity, including a trade union, labor union, employees' association, or professional organization.
Among the exceptions included in this bill are labor unions representing those who are "employed by a state agency in a professional law enforcement or firefighting capacity, or an individual employed by a state agency in a capacity that meets the definition of 'emergency medical services personnel' as that term is defined by Section 773.003, Health and Safety Code."
In essence, what SB 1968 would do is prohibit labor union dues from being automatically withheld from the paychecks of government employees, except for police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical services personnel. This would apply to state, county, and municipal employees, including employees of community colleges, universities, and school districts.

Closed-circuit camera footage captured three masked men hurling stones at a church early Saturday in the state capital of Mumbai, prompting city police to file an initial case against the "unknown people".
