[SG.NEWS.YAHOO] A Saudi cleric has become the topic of discussion on Twitter after he rejected the scientific fact that the Earth revolves around the Sun, claiming the exact opposite and added that the Earth is stationary. "E pur se muove."
A video posted on YouTube shows Sheikh Bandar al-Khaibari answering students' questions and rejecting the centuries-old discovery that the Sun stays still, while Earth and other planets rotate around it.
When a student asked the cleric whether the Earth was stationary or moving, he replied "stationary and [it] does not move".
Then he went on to explain his theory while holding on to a sealed water cup and said: "First of all, where are we now? We go to Sharjah airport to travel to China by plane."
The cleric then asked the students to focus and continued, "This is Earth, if you say it rotates, if we leave Sharjah airport on international flight to China, the Earth is rotating right? So if the plane stands still in the air, wouldn't China be coming towards it?
"If the Earth rotates on the other direction, the plane will not be able to reach China. Because China is also rotating as the plane rotates."

So...he is saying the earth is the airplane and everything rotates around it. I think I got a nosebleed. Let me take a wild ass guess. Everything revolves around mecca.
Sheikh Bandar doesn't walk...he moves the universe.
[FOX5VEGAS] New York-based New Media Investment Group Inc. says it has reached an agreement to purchase the company that owns the Las Vegas Review-Journal and daily newspapers in six other states. LVRJ was the home of Righthaven. It's not allowed on the Burg. It is one with the trolls.

...That seems like very little money for that many assets. Can't imagine why they'd be so devalued.

Stephens is getting out of the newspaper business. He still will have co-ownership of several newspapers, but he's been working on developing a substantial internet presence.
Judging by the news releases, Stephens Media also had a close and comfy relationship with his financial management firm. It'd still be interesting to pick threads and see how RH was set up.

This kind of thing, along with "trigger warnings", is a throwback to the kind of Victorian sensibility that led to the prodution of pantaloons to shield the modesty of previously unclothed furniture "limbs". Not so long ago we were so proud to be long past such nonsense, but apparently not.
[Rant about ignoring etymology to manufacture outrage set aside for the nonce, though the temptation is very great.]
[REUTERS] Zim-bob-wean President Bob Muggsy Mugabe Octogenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case... turned 91-years-old on Saturday showing no sign of giving up power as the West slowly eases pressure on a man who has been an international pariah for the last decade. Last decade? How about 3.5 decades.
Mugabe, one of the Africa's most divisive ...politicians call things divisive when when the other side sez something they don't like. Their own statements are never divisive, they're principled... figures, is the only leader that Zim-bob-we has known since independence from Britannia in 1980. An 'independence' agreed to by perfidious Albion, soon betrayed with sanctions, clandestine support for the left, and regime change from the West. The usual pattern and standard outcomes.
Leaders from his generation like South Africa's Nelson Mandela have died while others like Zambia's Kenneth Kaunda retired long ago, but Mugabe plans to run in the 2018 election, his last under a new constitution, when he will be 94.
Last December Mugabe fired his deputy of 10 years, changed the ruling party constitution to concentrate more power in his hands and promoted his wife Grace into the top rungs of the ZANU-PF decision-making politburo. One-time veteran's advocate Grace awaits her turn. Wat an amazing coincidence.
The EU and United States imposed travel and financial sanctions on Mugabe and his acolytes in 2002 accusing the veteran leader of vote rigging and human rights When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much... violations.
Finger-wagging and remonstrating, Mugabe has said the West is punishing him for seizing white-owned commercial farms to resettle blacks and have sponsored his opponents at home. I blame colonial Bybel thumping Tea Party people and Fox news.

[AnNahar] Moody's cut Russia's debt rating by one notch into 'junk' territory Friday, saying the Ukraine crisis and the fall in oil prices and the ruble will further undermine Russia's economy.
Just over one month since its last downgrade of Moscow's credit rating, Moody's said Russia "is expected to experience a deep recession in 2015 and a continued contraction in 2016.
"The decline in confidence is likely to constrain domestic demand and exacerbate the Russian economy's already chronic underinvestment," it warned.
Moody's cut the rating on the country's bonds by one step to Ba1, "speculative" or junk grade. Previously it was Baa3.
The move also came after Standard & Poor's invoked Moscow's ire on January 26 by cutting its rating for the country to junk level.
Moody's said Friday that the government's fiscal strength "will diminish materially" in the face of continuing capital flight, further lowering the country's access to international capital markets.
Moody's also said that, although low for the moment, the risk is rising that the government could respond to international pressure over its role in the Ukraine crisis by deciding to slow payments on its foreign debt.
Moody's also attached to its rating a negative outlook, suggesting the country faces potentially another downgrade in the coming months.
"It seems more likely that Russia will face additional sanctions than that current sanctions are lifted in the coming months. The associated economic risks are also biased to the downside," it said.
The downgrade followed a week of fighting in Ukraine that appeared to undermine a brand-new truce negotiated between leaders of Russia, Germany, La Belle France, Ukraine and the pro-Moscow rebels.
On Friday, the United States, the leader in pressing sanctions on Russia, delivered some of its harshest criticism yet, accusing Moscow of "undermining" the global order by supporting the rebels.
"We call upon Russia to honor its commitments immediately with decisive action before we see more cities decimated and more lives lost in eastern Ukraine," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki ...a valley girl who woke up one morning and found she was spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of State... said.

[Hurriyet Daily News] Azerbaijan's Central Bank has suddenly devalued the country's currency by 33.5 percent against the dollar.
Like Russia, Azerbaijan has been hurt by the sharp decline in the price of oil, its main export. Russia's currency has lost more than half of its value in the past year.
In announcing the devaluation on Feb. 21, the Central Bank said it was aimed at "stimulating the diversification of Azerbaijan's economy, strengthening the international competitiveness of the economy and its export potential, and guaranteeing stability in the balance of payments."

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday other countries should not have the illusion that they can attain military superiority over Russia, Interfax reported.
Certainly the Ukraine, Georgia and Ruritania have had their problems...
"No one should have the illusion that they can gain military superiority over Russia, put any kind of pressure on it. We will always have an adequate answer for any such adventures," he was quoted as saying in an address dedicated to the Defenders' of the Fatherland Day holiday next week.

"It is worth mentioning that Moscow and Delhi have already unveiled a supersonic BrahMos, the world's fastest cruise missile that can reach the speed of Mach 3, and pledged to present a BrahMos-II hypersonic cruise missile soon. The creation of the new formula will evidently facilitate the process: due to its top secret recipe the fuel will accumulate enough energy to enable missiles to exceed Mach 5, according to experts."
Perhaps the experts didn't consider structural integrity at higher speeds to be all that important...
[Hurriyet Daily News] Ukraine lost 179 troops in the one-month battle with pro-Russian rebels that ended in defeat over the key eastern town of Debaltseve, Yuri Biryukov, an advisor to Ukraine's president said on his Facebook page Feb. 21.
If that figure is confirmed, it would represent one of the bloodiest losses suffered by the Ukrainian side in the 10-month conflict.
Kyiv has officially given a toll of 13 soldiers killed on Feb. 17 and Feb. 18, when Debaltseve was overrun by the pro-Russian separatists in defiance of a UN-backed truce.
Meanwhile, ...back at the pond, the radioactive tadpoles grown into frogs. Really big frogs, in fact... pro-Russian rebels said they will swap prisoners with the Ukrainian side Feb. 21 as part of a battered truce that the West hopes will cool a deadly conflict that has poisoned relations with Moscow.
"Today (Saturday) there will be an exchange between us and the Ukrainian side," said the rebels' official for human rights One man's rights are another man's existential threat. , Daria Morozova.
Around 40 prisoners on each side -- some of them maimed -- are to be handed over, with the exchange to take place deep in rebel territory, in the city of Lugansk, Morozova said.
Journalists were put in a convoy carrying the rebels' prisoners from the separatist stronghold of Donetsk to Lugansk. The soldiers had beards and looked tired. One had his arm bandaged.

[Hurriyet Daily News] Greece's radical left government was at pains Feb. 21 to put a positive face on an EU compromise deal that is sharply at odds with its anti-austerity ambitions.
At a last-ditch meeting on Feb. 20, Europe gave Athens some breathing room to present alternative reforms in a bid to save its crucial financial lifeline.
But the new leftist Greek government, which came to power last month pledging to end deeply unpopular austerity measures, has just two days to submit proposals that will satisfy its sceptical peers.

[AnNahar] A federal court ordered the B.O. regime Friday to stop detaining mothers and children seeking asylum in the United States, a practice implemented to halt a wave of Central American migrants last summer.
The order by U.S. District Judge James Boasberg in Washington removes a tool President Barack Obama If I had a son he'd look like Trayvon... 's administration had used to halt illegal immigration from across its southwestern border.
In his preliminary injunction, Boasberg said that mothers and their young children coming to the United States from Guatemala, Honduras or El Salvador to escape from violence there had "credible fear" and could thus reasonably hope to obtain asylum.
Since last summer, the B.O. regime had placed the migrants in detention, rather than freeing them, while their case was being examined.
Plaintiffs in the case before the federal court, represented by the powerful American Civil Liberties Union, had all crossed the border last year to take refuge in the United States.
But once they were stopped by immigration authorities, they were then held to send a message that the migrants were not welcome.
Boasberg criticized that policy, saying the administration "presented little empirical evidence, moreover, that their detention policy even achieves its only desired effect -- i.e. that it actually deters potential immigrants from Central America."
Earlier this week, a court froze Obama's landmark immigration reform that would protect millions of undocumented Democrats from deportation.
The Justice Department plans to file papers Monday to block that ruling.
Obama had used an executive order to bypass a hostile Congress and drive through measures to protect about four million undocumented foreigners from deportation.
The measures had been due to go into effect Wednesday.
Immigration is a hot political issue heading towards the 2016 presidential election, with around 11 million undocumented migrants in the country.
Obama's executive order would have allowed only some of them to come forward: those who have not committed serious crimes and have children who are American citizens or residents.
Obama has also tried to push more general amnesty, which could eventually bring many millions of new voters, many seen as likely fellow Democrats.
The president's Republican foes have largely opposed Obama's immigration reform, declaring it an "amnesty" for people who broke the law by entering the country illegally.

from Guatemala, Honduras or El Salvador to escape from violence
I would have thought that if there was such pervasive violence that close it would be all over the news. Is Mexico violent enough to get "special" treatment? How about Argentina or anywhere in Africa (although I've heard that Botswanna is not bad)?
Who determines who are the refugees? This sounds like a crack that Obastard could exploit like crazy.
