Afghanistan
ANSF Drive Taliban Away from Kunduz Districts
[Tolo News] With the support of local residents, the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) were successful in driving the Taliban Lions of Islam away from two districts of Kunduz province, local officials said.

According to Sarwar Hussaini, the front man for the Kunduz police chief, residents of Chahar Dara and Khan Abad districts of the province have started uprisings against the Taliban, helping the ANSF take control of the province.

"The Taliban have been driven to the remote areas of the districts," he said. "The ANSF is now preparing for operations in those areas."

According to the Ministry of Interior (MoI) front man Sediq Sediqqi, two ANSF soldiers bit the dust during the operations that killed 20 Taliban Lions of Islam and maimed 30 others. Sediqqi added that Khan Abad, Chahar Dara and Dasht-e-Archi districts are now clear of Death Eaters.

Hundreds of Taliban Lions of Islam attacked Chahar Dara and Khan Abad districts last week, forcing tens of families to flee their homes. The ANSF operations that followed the attacks resulted in heavy Death Eater casualties.

Insurgent attacks have dramatically increased in the northern parts of the country in the recent months. On Friday, the Afghan Minister of Defense Bismillah Mohammadi asserted that the prolonged election process has allowed the Taliban to advance their offensives all around the country, causing the bloodiest festivities in the past three months and affecting millions of people in one way or another.

Hundreds of Insurgents Attack Districts of Faryab
[Tolo News] More than 50 Lions of Islam were killed and 70 others were maimed in festivities with the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) after hundreds of Lions of Islam attacked Qaisar and Ghormach districts of northern Faryab province last week, Faryab Governor Mohammadullah Baktash said.

Baktash believes that the attacks were controlled and coordinated by foreign bad boys.

"The foreign Lions of Islam support their Afghan counterparts," he said. "The Lions of Islam threaten the people so they could give them shelter."

Baktash stated that the festivities between the Lions of Islam and the ANSF are often prolonged because the ANSF are not equipped with modern weaponry.

"The police do not have the necessary weaponry while the Lions of Islam are provided with support and weapons by their leaders."

Moreover, Faryab Police Chief Toryalai Abadyani added to Baktashas comments, asserting that the Lions of Islam are trained in Pakistain.

"Uzbeks from Uzbekistan, Tajiks from Tajikistan, Arab, Chechen and other Lions of Islam are trained in Pakistain."

Clashes in Faryab follow the recent insecurities in Kunduz, Kunar, Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
and Nangarhar

provinces. Officials have claimed that the prolonged election process has contributed to a dramatic increase in bad boy activities.

AU troops seize militants' stronghold in SW Somalia
TIYEEGLOW, Somalia -- As parts of an offensive aimed at squeezing militants' strongholds, Somali troops backed by the African Union forces took control of a strategic town in south-western Somalia Saturday, Garowe Online reports.

The seizure of Tiyeglow, an agricultural town in Bakool region
...where???...
has met little resistance from the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabab fighters who fled as troops surged into the town, according to Mohamed Moalim Ahmed, the region's governor.

"Our troops continue their clean-up operations to dislodge Al Shabaab militia from the areas under their control. The five districts of Hudur region are now in the hands of the government," he told Somalia's state-run radio Mogadishu.

The seizure of the town is seen as a big blow to the Al-Shabab fighters which is fighting to impose an austere sharia law in the largely moderate Somalia.

For months, the allied forces had been on offensive in the region, considered vital for securing the region's provincial capital of Hudur which saw attacks by militants in control of nearby towns.

Al-Shabab has lost its main strongholds, mainly the lucrative port city of Kismayo after the group lost the control of the Somali capital in 2011. The group has since resorted to guerilla attacks, including bombings and assassinations in the horn of Africa nation.

Military court sentences Shaboobs to death amid international outcry
MOGADISHU -- Mogadishu-based military court on Sunday sentenced two Shaboobs Al Shabaab suspects to death as international outcry continues to put court justice into question, Garowe Online reports.

Five Al Shabaab defendants-Dahir Osman Ali, Asad Mohamud Ali, Mohamed Mahdi Ali, Ahmed Abdirahman Mohamed and Osman Ali Malin-were arraigned in the military court on charges of terrorism. Dahir, Asad and Mohamed were convicted of killing traffic police officer Yusuf Hassan Adow during the holy month of Ramadan, judges declared.

Addressing reporters in the court building, prosecutor handed out death penalty to Dahir and absentee Asad while Mohamed was sentenced to life in prison. The court also freed Mohamed after military body found him not guilty of the criminal charges while Maalin was sentenced to six months in jail.

The usual suspects Human Rights Watch (HRW) expressed concern over the mass executions being carried out by Federal Government of Somalia’s military court, saying it has been short of International fair trail standards.
How vociferous was HRW in condemning the murders committed by the Shaboobs? Just asking...
In 2014 alone, thirteen executions are said to have taken place in Mogadishu.

War planes attack Libyan capital again
[Al Ahram] Unidentified war planes attacked targets in Libya's capital Tripoli

on Sunday, hours after forces from the city of Misrata said they had seized the main airport.

Tripoli residents heard jets followed by kabooms at dawn but no more details were immediately available.

Assema TV studios attacked, again
[Libya Herald] The studios of the privately owned Al-Assema TV station in the Gurji Road of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
were attacked and ransacked yesterday for the fourth time since the channel was founded in 2011.

The station, which has been a supporter of the political positions taken by the National Forces Alliance during the era of the GNC and now supports the House of Representatives (HoR), has accused the pro Islamist bloc of responsibility for all of the attacks on it.

The latest attack on Al-Assema TV comes as part of a continuing and wider battle by the opposing political streams in Libya to control the media and the flow of information.

Last week, the Libyan government requested that the Cairo based Nilesat authority terminate the broadcasts of its two state-owned Al-Rasmiya and Al-Wataniya channels which had been forcibly taken over by Islamist militias.

The channels had adopted an anti HoR position and had refrained from broadcasting the opening session of the HoR or any of its sessions. The channels also started supporting the Libya Dawn operation in Tripoli and opposed the Dignity Operation in eastern Libya.

Unconfirmed reports Sunday say that the house of the owner of Al-Assema TV, Juma Al-Usta, was also ransacked.

Libya's Islamist Militias Claim Control of Tripoli
[VOA News] Libya is engulfed in new political turmoil, with an Islamist militia openly challenging the legitimacy of the country's elected parliament, after its fighters took control of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
's battered international airport.

After seizing the airport in the Libyan capital, the militia from the coastal city of Misrata called Sunday for the old General National Congress to be reinstated.

It alleged the parliament elected in June was complicit in mysterious Arclight airstrikes on Misrati positions at the airport as its Death Eaters fought rival fighters from the mountainous region of Zintan for six weeks for control of the key facility.

The new parliament, based in Tobruk, 1,600 kilometers east of Tripoli, branded the Misratis as terrorists, along with another group, Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
, which controls 80 percent of the eastern city of Benghazi

Parliament called the two groups "a legitimate target" of the national army, which has been unable to control violence in the country since the 2011 overthrow of dictator Muammar Qadaffy
...Custodian of Wheelus AFB for 42 long years until he was ejected from the gene pool by his indignant citizens...

The Misratis directly blamed the Arclight airstrikes in the past week on Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

Cairo denied its involvement, but the UAE had no immediate comment.

General National Congress

General National Congress official Omar Hmaidan defended the Islamist militias and called on the old assembly to resume its meetings to, in his words, "unite the country."

Hmaidan said the new parliament should not meet in an "ivory tower" in the east of the country, but should return to the capital Tripoli. He argued the National Congress is still legal and the new parliament cannot claim to speak for the country.

Hmaidan claimed recently the new parliament has "violated the constitution" with a recent call for foreign intervention in Libya.

The National Congress' mandate expired last February and many of its members are outside the country.

Boko Haram Takes Over Madagali, Other Adamawa Villages
[LEADERSHIP.NG] Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
snuffies have overrun many border villages of Madagali local government area of Adamawa State and hoisted their flags, barely 48 hours after they annexed the National Police Mobile Training Camp in Limankara village of Gwoza LGA of Borno State, local sources revealed.

Meanwhile,
...back at the barn, Bossy's udder had begun to ache...
the police high command has said that 35 coppers and men were still missing from the Police Mobile Force Training School in Gwoza.

However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
the recent attack on the border villages of Adamawa, according to local sources, was the most lethal in recent times, resulting in many casualties as the snuffies captured many villages in one fell swoop as security operatives in the areas allegedly took to their heels.

The executive chairman of Madagali, Mr James Abawu Watharda, while confirming the attack in a phone chat, said the snuffies struck the local government in large numbers, wielding sophisticated weapons including rocket-propelled launchers, improvised bombs and petrol bombs, and started shooting at innocent people and setting property items ablaze before overpowering security operatives and vigilante groups and immediately hoisted their flags.

"Yes, some Boko Haram snuffies invaded most of our villages, shooting sporadically and in the process killing many innocent people and destroying a lot of houses before hoisting their flags in different locations.

"We are worried with the spate of killings and destruction by snuffies without the intervention of the security operatives," he said.

Reports indicated that the krazed killer attack on Madagali has caused anxiety in neighbouring local governments areas of Michika Hong and Gombi: people were said to be on the run.

The chairman further disclosed that the areas dispersed by Boko Haram snuffies include Madagali town, Sabongari and Kafin Hausa.

A security source also added that, in Sabon Gari 2, churches were razed down while one person was killed at Kafin Hausa before they left into the bushes.

In addition, the chairman added that the snuffies were becoming impregnable as they had a field day killing people and destroying property. They seem uncontrollable even as the security personnel avoided any confrontation with them, he stated.

"For now people are fleeing for their lives and no one can tell the exact casualty, because of the pandemonium that ensued," he said.

Reports say that this development forced some internally displaced persons who bravely ran away from the Gwoza attacks three weeks ago and resettled at neighbouring Madagali town, and residents had to vacate their community following the sounds of kabooms and gunshots that signalled another krazed killer attack.

One of the Gwoza refugees who was in Gulak after fleeing, Mr Dauda Musa, said that "the latest attack forced many people in Madagali including the displaced persons to flee to neighbouring Mubi and Gombi towns of Adamawa for fear of possible attacks from the snuffies who now operate freely without confrontation from security operatives".

All efforts to get the police public relations officer in Adamawa, Mr Michael Haa, proved abortive as his phone line was switched off at the time of going to press.
It was tea time.
On the 35 missing coppers, police front man, DCP Emmanuel Ojukwu made the disclosure yesterday in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP Sunday. He however said the operatives were being searched for with very promising prospect of locating them.

Boko Haram leader declares Islamic caliphate in Nigeria

bully boyz has been placed under an Islamic caliphate, the group’s leader said.

“Thanks be to Allah, who gave victory to our brethren in (the town of) Gwoza and made it part of the Islamic caliphate,” Abubakar Shekau says in a 52-minute video obtained by the Agence La Belle France-Presse. “By the grace of Allah, we will not leave the town. We have come to stay.”

In the video, Mr. Shekau lauds the leader of the Islamic State, His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
, who in late June declared himself “the caliph” and “leader of Moslems everywhere,” AFP reported.

It was not clear, however, if Mr. Shekau was declaring himself to be a part of Mr. Baghdadi’s caliphate or if he was referring to a separate caliphate in Nigeria.

China-Japan-Koreas
China executes Tiananmen attack 'masterminds'
[USATODAY] China has executed eight people for terrorist crimes, including three men who "criminal masterminded" a deadly attack with a car that crashed near Beijing's Tiananmen Gate last October, China's state-run news agency
...and if you can't believe the state-run news agency who can you believe?...
Xinhua said late Saturday.

The executions were carried out in Xinjiang, a troubled province in China's northwest that borders Pakistain, Afghanistan and the Central Asian states. Xinhua did not specify their ethnic group, but the eight executed all had names that suggest they belong to Xinjiang's Uighur people, a mostly Moslem minority whose members have accused Beijing of highly repressive policies toward their religion, language and culture.

In the past year, authorities have labeled as "terrorist attacks" a rising number of violent incidents that have occurred mostly in Xinjiang but have spread to other parts of China for the first time. More than 300 people have died, prompting a further security crackdown, hundreds of arrests and dozens of executions that exiled Uighur activists say fuel the violence.

The Chinese government accuses foreign terrorist groups of spreading religious extremism online in Xinjiang and encouraging Uighurs to pursue an independent state. Besides the Tiananmen attack in Beijing, Xinhua said the Xinjiang-based cases of those executed included gun-seizing and police assault in Aksu, murder and illegal manufacturing of explosives in Kashgar and the murder of government officials and the establishment of a terrorist organization in Hotan.

Last October, a man brought terror to the heart of China's capital when he deliberately drove a car through a crowd of pedestrians near Beijing's Tiananmen Gate, injuring 40 people and killing two. He and his two passengers, his mother and wife, also died when the car burst into flames.

Huseyin Guxur, Yusup Wherniyas and Yusup Ehmet "criminal masterminded" that attack, Xinhua said. They had been sentenced to death for "organizing and leading (a) terrorist organization and jeopardizing public security with dangerous means," the news agency said.

Dilxat Raxit, front man for the World Uyghur Congress, an exile group, said in an e-mailed statement that the executions were "a typical (case) of justice serving politics."

I told an NCO, E7, to remove his cover in a checkout line at a store. I was in uniform. He told me to F^&^ off. Then he proceeded to threaten to kick my ass. I ended up visiting with the provost marshal, a friend, and told him about it. He was arrested and charged. But this post is all about being in the hood.

India-Pakistan
7 killed in Indian Kashmir clashes
[ARABNEWS] India's Army clashed with suspected forces of Evil in Indian Kashmire near the disputed border with Pakistain, leaving two soldiers and four rebels dead, a military official said Sunday.

Soldiers encountered the turbans, who are believed to have crossed the de facto border into Indian Kashmireas Keran sector, some 150 kilometers (93 miles) northwest of the main city of Srinagar on Saturday night, the official said.

"In the resultant exchange of fire between army and terrorists, one soldier was injured who succumbed later (to his injuries)," defense front man Col. N.N. Joshi said.

Another soldier and four suspected forces of Evil were killed early on Sunday in a separate counter-insurgency operation in a nearby forested area of Kalaroos, Joshi said.

"Fighting is over in the area and identification of the four killed forces of Evil was not ascertained yet," Joshi told AFP, confirming the soldier died in the firing. The violence comes after India last week called off high-level talks with Pakistain, scheduled to take place in Islamabad, angry that Pak officials had met with Kashmiri separatist leaders in New Delhi.

Pakistain described the cancelation of the talks between the foreign secretaries as a "setback" for closer relations with Indiaas new right-wing government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Indiaas military says it has stepped up operations to flush out suspected Pak forces of Evil moving across the heavily militarised de facto border known as the Line of Control (LoC).

On Saturday, Indian and Pak forces exchanged fire along the border further south in the region of Jammu, resulting in four deaths and forcing villagers to flee their homes.

Two non-combatants were killed on the Indian side of the international border when Pak forces opened fire, according to Indian officials. On the other side, two Pak non-combatants were killed by Indian fire, Pakistainas military said.

Indian Defense Minister Arun Jaitley said Sunday there had been a series of recent "provocations" by Pakistainas Army and Indiaas military was "responding adequately."

Jaitley told news hounds that security forces were "fully protecting both our territory and people."

Shrine caretaker & two devotees, two ASWJ men shot dead in city
[DAWN] KARACHI: An armed attack on a shrine in Korangi left its caretaker and two devotees dead on Saturday and a few minutes later gunnies targeted a 45-year-old man and his nephew in Shah Faisal Colony, with Sherlocks seeing the first incident as an act of terrorism and a party claiming that the second one was an assault on sectarian grounds.

Three men on a cycle of violence stormed Dargah Nazar Shah in Korangi off the Nasir Jump bus stop and close to Chakra Goth and fired multiple shots which hit the three men present inside. The incident sparked fear in the area, and heavy contingents of police and Rangers cordoned off the shrine.

"The firing left the shrine's caretaker, Zakir Hussain Shah, and his two aides -- Younus and Nawaz -- dead on the spot," said Inspector Asadullah Mangi, the SHO of the Zaman Town cop shoppe. "The attackers parked their motorbike outside and used two 9mm pistols in the attack after entering the shrine. All three victims died instantly. We have shifted the bodies to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities."

Iraq
Violence rages in Iraq amid diplomatic efforts to restrict 'Islamic State'
[DW.DE] The Iraqi police said the boom-mobile went kaboom! in the Shiite dominated Shuala district in northwestern Baghdad on Sunday.

On Saturday, kabooms in Baghdad and the northern city of Kirkuk killed at least 30 people. The bombings came a day after a deadly kaboom and subsequent shooting spree at a mosque northeast of Baghdad. At least 70 people were killed in the attack.

Iraq is facing one of its deepest political crises in a decade, as the Jihadist group Islamic State (IS) continues with advances in Syria and Iraq.

IS Lions of Islam have also seized the Tabqa military airport in Syria's northern Raqa province, the UK-based monitoring group The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights said on Sunday.

Iraq's prime minister-designate Haider al-Abadi held talks with visiting Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Sunday to get the neighboring Shiite country's support against Sunni turbans.

"Abadi pointed to the presence of many dangers posed in the region as a result of the existence of the terrorist gang Islamic State which requires regional and international efforts to exterminate this terrorist organization," his office said in a statement after the talks with Zarif.

Zarif said that Tehran had no intentions of sending its soldiers to Iraq.

"We do not believe that we need to be present inside Iraq to help our Iraqi brothers. They are very capable of doing that themselves," said the Iranian foreign minister in Baghdad.

also ruled out sending troops to support the Iraqi forces. She dismissed the possibility of arming the Kurdish PKK separatists against IS.

Merkel said in an interview with ARD television on Sunday that Berlin "will not under any circumstances send combat troops to Iraq," and has no "concrete plans" to send troops in any other capacity, such as training of the Iraqi army.

German weekly Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung had earlier reported that some politicians from Merkel's party were considering arming the PKK, which the EU classifies a terrorist outfit.

Israeli strike kills Hamas finance official
[Al Ahram] Israel said Sunday it had killed a top Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, financial official in an air strike on Gazoo City, as it continued a policy of targeted liquidations against the Paleostinian group.

Mohammed al-Ghul "was an important Hamas actor who dealt with transferring funds to build terror infrastructure in Gazoo, such as tunnels, and was a key target," Israeli army front man Major Arye Shalicar said.

The air strike targeted a car in Gazoo City, killing Ghul, the army said.

Paleostinian medics in Gazoo confirmed his death.

On Thursday, Israel's military killed three senior members of Hamas's armed wing the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, just days after trying to kill its military chief Mohammed Deif.

A strike that levelled a six-storey building killed Deif's wife and two of his children.

Several other air strikes brought Sunday's corpse count to at least 14 people, including six children.

Hamas fires volley of rockets into Israel
[Iran Press TV] Paleostinian resistance fighters in the besieged Gazoo Strip continue to fire rockets into Israel in retaliation for the ongoing attacks on the densely-populated region.

The Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,, launched retaliatory attacks against Israel on Sunday.

In the latest incident, at least three Israelis were maimed by mortar shell fire in Sha'ar HaNegev, in southern Israel. Two of them are at death's door.

Earlier, a Paleostinian rocket landed in Eshkol, causing property damage.

Israeli officials also confirmed that several people had been injured in Be’ersheba, one of them critically.

About 600 rockets have been fired into Israel since a ceasefire between Israel and Paleostinians collapsed on Tuesday.

Meanwhile,
...back at the wreckage, Captain Poindexter awoke groggily, his hand still stuck in the Ming vase...
Israel's continued war on the besieged Gazoo Strip is forcing many Israelis living in areas near the Paleostinian territory to flee.

Tens of thousands of Israelis are now getting prepared to leave southern towns and communities to escape rockets launched by Paleostinian fighters.

Many families in Ein Hash-loha, Nahal Oz, and Nir Oz have already been relocated to the north.

#1  Seriously, Israel needs to go back in with boots on the ground and cut Gaza into thirds. Then they need to start destroying everything over six inches high down to bedrock, a third at a time. By the time they finish, they'll have been able to totally destroy not only Gaza, but Hamass and the "civilian community" they hide within. Put the true civilians on railcars bound for Qatar. If Qatar can support Hamass, they can also deal with the displaced Gazan civilian population.

Israeli army attacks civilians near Gaza hospital
[Iran Press TV] The Israeli army has conducted an attack on a group of civilians near al-Shifa hospital in the besieged Gazoo Strip.

At least one Paleostinian was killed and around a dozen, including children, were maimed after a missile hit the group on Sunday. Some of the maimed are at death's door.

Also, four more people were maimed on the same day when Israeli warplanes bombarded a police department east of Gazoo.

Separately, an Israeli strike ruined a commercial center in the town of Rafah in the southern Gazoo Strip, wounding three people.

Many Paleostinians in the Gazoo Strip are killed on a daily basis as the Israeli military continues pounding the impoverished region.

Nearly 2,120 people, mostly civilians, have bit the dust and over 10,800 have been injured in the Israeli war since July 8.

The United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
says over 80 percent of the killed Paleostinians have been civilians.

Nearly 400,000 Paleostinian children are in immediate need of psychological help due to “catastrophic and tragic impact” of the Israeli war, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Paleostinian resistance movement Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,, has been launching retaliatory attacks against Israel.

Tel Aviv says 68 Israelis have been killed in the conflict so far, but Hamas puts the number at more than 150.

Syrian forces evacuate Tabqa military airport
[Iran Press TV] Syrian government forces have evacuated a military airport in northern Syria following fierce festivities with ISIL Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
Lion of Islams.

According to Syrian state media on Sunday, the country’s army soldiers have staged an evacuation of the Tabqa military airport in the Syrian province of Raqqa and regrouped nearby.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also said the Takfiri snuffies have taken over the military airport.

The UK-based group further said that nearly 170 Syrian soldiers guarding the base were killed in the fighting on Sunday.

Over the past few days, almost 350 snuffies have been killed in the fighting in the area.

The army says Syrian fighter jets are also continuing their Arclight airstrikes against positions of the snuffies in the area.

Iran says it has downed Israeli drone near nuclear site
[NYDAILYNEWS] Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards is saying its forces have shot down an Israeli drone as it approached an Iranian nuclear site.

The Guards issued a statement on its website saying its forces fired a missile at the drone as it neared its uranium enrichment facility in Natanz, more than 185 miles south of the capital, Tehran.

The statement did not say when it shot down the drone, nor did it elaborate on how the Guards knew the drone was from Israel. Israeli officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

This comes as world powers negotiate with the Islamic Theocratic Republic over its contested nuclear program. The West fears it could allow Iran to build a nuclear weapon. Tehran says its program is for peaceful purposes.

American Peter Theo Curtis Freed From Captivity in Syria After Two Years
[NBCNEWS] An American captured nearly two years ago was released in Syria, U.S. officials said Sunday.

Peter Theo Curtis was freed from the "clutches" of Jabhat Al-Nusrah (the al-Qaeda affiliate fighting in Syria), Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
said. The United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...
said in a statement that Curtis was handed over to U.N. officials in Quneitra, in the south west region of Syria, on Sunday night local time. After a medical evaluation, Curtis was released to U.S. representatives, the U.N. said. National Security Advisor Susan E. Rice said Curtis was "safe" and expected to be "reunited with his family shortly."

“Over these last two years, the United States reached out to more than two dozen countries asking for urgent help from anyone who might have tools, influence, or leverage to help secure Theo's release and the release of any Americans held hostage in Syria,” Kerry said.

Curtis was reportedly kidnapped in Antakya, Turkey, where he planned to enter Syria in October 2012, according to Al Jazeera, which also reported he was released with the help of Qatari mediators. Curtis was, for a time, held with an American photographer Matthew Schrier, a source close to Schrier told NBC News. Schrier escaped Aleppo in July 2013, more than half a year after being kidnapped, and told the New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
in August of that year that he and his American cellmate were accused by their captors of being spies.

The release comes just days after the Islamist myrmidon group ISIS beheaded American journalist James Foley and threatened to kill another American journalist in their custody, Steven Sotloff. The Committee to Protect Journalists estimates that 20 journalists are currently being held captive in Syria.

#2  Curtis’s captors with Jabhat al-Nusra have been at war with the Islamic State, which holds three other U.S. hostages, for control of parts of Syria in recent months. The whereabouts of a fourth American hostage, journalist Austin Tice, are not known, but he is not believed to be with the Islamic State, U.S. officials say.

The Al-Nusrah are what the regine might refer to as 'moderate' mooslim murderers, but that does not mean money, promises of not being targeted by air strikes, or promises of GITMO releases were not bartered. Professional courtesy possibly, but I somehow doubt guilt or altruism were in play here.

Islamic State militants seize Syrian airbase
[THEGUARDIAN] Islamic hard boyz have seized most of an airbase in eastern Syria and are tightening a stranglehold on a minority Turkoman community north of Baghdad, as their pillage of the heartland of the Levant gains further momentum.

Militants from Islamic State (Isis) had breached the borders of the Tabqa base, which was the last base east of Aleppo still held by the Syrian regime, and now appeared certain to seize full control within days in another blow to all sides trying to slow the group's progress through Iraq and Syria.

About 300 miles to the east, a community of 18,000 Shia Turkomans holed up in the town of Amerli, north of Baghdad, said they were running out of food and hope after a two-month siege by Isis, which is trying to starve them to death or force them to convert to the bully boys' hardline brand of Sunni Islam.

In both locations, the bodies of fighters were reportedly defaced and displayed by Isis members, who have become feared and scorned for their unchecked barbarity.

Witnesses at the Tabqa base, not far east of the Isis stronghold of Raqqa, said that several captured Syrian soldiers had been beheaded.

Efforts to reinforce the base had failed, as had moves to evacuate up to 1,000 troops still stationed there as the forces of Evil advanced.

Regime forces had fired at least one Scud missile, launched from near Damascus, at Isis forces nearby, but had failed to dislodge them.

In Amerli, surrounded residents said they were being left to their fate, unlike the Yazidis of north-west Iraq, who had beat feet from Mount Sinjar after they were attacked by Isis. Turkish rebels who crossed from Syria and US air strikes secured an exit for the Yazidi refugees to Iraqi Kurdistan, but no such efforts have been proposed to assist the Turkomans.
