8 Year-Old Girl Killed, 8 Others Injured in Nangarhar Blast
[Tolo News] An eight-year-old girl was killed and 8 other civilians were maimed in a roadside kaboom blast in Jalalabad city, in eastern Afghanistan, on Saturday afternoon, local officials said.

The bomb exploded at noon in a bazaar, said a front man for the provincial governor, Ahmad Zia Alizai.

The maimed were taken to a nearby hospital.

No group, including the Taliban, has grabbed credit for the blast.

The blast occurs in the same day as the UN releases its annual report on civilian casualties, saying that it has increased 14% in 2013 compared to a year before. Roadside bombs are the single largest killer of civilian casualties in the country and a weapon of choice by the bully boys.

The report documents 2,959 civilians deaths and 5,656 injuries during 2013, attributing about third of them to the bully boys.

"The United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) documented 8,615 civilian casualties (2,959 civilian deaths and 5,656 injured) in 2013, marking a seven percent increase in deaths, 17 percent increase in injured, and a 14 percent increase in total civilian casualties compared to 2012.," the report said.

Egypt Military 'Kills 16 Sinai Militants in Air Strikes'
[An Nahar] Egypt's military said it killed 16 Death Eaters Saturday in air strikes in the restive Sinai peninsula, which jihadists have used as a springboard for attacks across the country.

The air force has pressed ahead with air strikes in the region even after Death Eaters in north Sinai downed a helicopter last month with a shoulder fired missile, killing the entire crew of five.

The Death Eaters have killed scores of soldiers and coppers in a growing insurgency after the army overthrew Islamist president Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
in July.

On Saturday, air strikes killed "16 extremely dangerous turbans belonging to the Moslem Brüderbund," military front man Ahmed Ali said on Facebook.

Morsi's Brotherhood was designated as a terrorist group in December after a suicide boom-mobileing of police headquarters killed 15 people.

The Brotherhood says it eschewed violence decades ago and is dedicated to advancing its agenda by peaceful means.

Another group, Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, grabbed credit for the December attack and another boom-mobileing outside police headquarters in Cairo last month.

The group, which appears to be inspired by al-Qaeda's bad boy Islamist ideology, is based in the sparsely inhabited north of Sinai, along the borders of Gazoo and Israel.

It has branched out from attacking security forces in the peninsula to bombings and liquidations of coppers elsewhere in Egypt.

#4  The Muslims in Libya are very moderate and don't follow the crazy crap blatherings you see coming out of Iraq, Yemen, Iran, and KSA.

My six months there was very educational about how moderate they are and how they should be encouraged to get their democracy moving quickly before some external nutjob constituency comes in and turns Libya into another "tribes with flags" chaotic mess like Iraq.

As many as 500 feared dead in drug massacre in Coahuila
The background of the massacre, the worst in modern Mexican history can be found here.
The remains of at least 500 people have been found in just 10 days in which an operation started searching for missing people of at least 11 municipalities of northern Coahuila.

The Assistant Attorney General for The Investigation and Search of Missing Persons in Coahuila (Subprocuraduría para la Investigación y Búsqueda de Personas no Localizadas de Coahuila), Juan José Yañez Arreola, reported that the remains of around 500 people were found in northern Coahuila.

"The majority of the remains are nearly whole bone units, some of them were found burnt because someone had tried to disintegrate them by incineration", reported Yañez Arreola to the newspaper El Siglo de Torreón.

Among the remains, skulls, bones, and charred barrels were found. The barrels were used to dissolve the bodies, of which only fragments were found.

Yañez Arreola stated that the remains will be analyzed by forensics experts and that the DNA results of the bones will take four months and later be compared to those with missing persons cases.

Iraq
Iraq Governor Gives Anbar Militants One-Week Ultimatum
[An Nahar] An Iraqi provincial governor Saturday gave snuffies controlling a city near Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
one week to surrender as government forces made steady progress in an effort to end a weeks-long crisis.

The Anbar governor's ultimatum was directed at anti-government fighters who have held Fallujah for more than a month.

It comes amid a protracted surge in violence with security forces grappling with near-daily attacks nationwide in addition to the fighting in the western desert province.

Analysts and diplomats have called for the Shiite-led government to address Sunni grievances in order to undermine support for hard boys, but with April elections looming, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki
... Prime Minister of Iraq and the secretary-general of the Islamic Dawa Party....
has taken a hard line.

"People of Anbar, criminals have kidnapped Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
" Governor Ahmed al-Dulaimi said in a statement.

"But, I swear to God, we will achieve victory against injustice and Fallujah will return to normal."

Dulaimi gave anti-government fighters a week to lay down their arms and promised them amnesty, but said the authorities would not negotiate with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
(ISIL), a powerful jihadist group he said was comprised of "killers and criminals".

Fallujah and thriving provincial capital Ramadi have for weeks been hit by conflict, and while government forces have made steady progress in retaking hard boy-held areas of Ramadi, they have largely stayed out of Fallujah for fear that an incursion would spark a drawn-out urban conflict with high numbers of casualties.

The city was a bastion of the Sunni insurgency following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, and American troops there fought some of their costliest battles since the Vietnam War.

In Ramadi, meanwhile, police Lieutenant Colonel Hamid Shandukh said security forces had defused upwards of 400 roadside kabooms, including dozens used to booby-trap houses.
That's quite an investment in never-to-be consummated kabooms. Someone is likely to be upset.
Tribal leader Ahmed Abu Risha, who years ago sided with the U.S. military and founded the Awakening movement of tribal militias against al-Qaeda, a day earlier held a news conference during which he showed what he said were bills distributed by ISIL as their own currency.

The 100-guinea note bore the likeness of former al-Qaeda chief the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now sometimes referred to as Mister Bones...
on one side, and the two World Trade Center towers attacked by the group on September 11, 2001 on the other.

The Anbar stand-off has prompted more than 140,000 people to flee their homes, the U.N. refugee agency said last month, calling it the worst displacement in Iraq since the peak of sectarian fighting between 2006 and 2008.

Kerry: Netanyahu does not want NATO in West Bank
[Ynet] Speaking to the Washington Post's David Ignatius, John Kerry said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was opposed the idea of NATO -- as opposed to IDF -- forces securing the West Bank, as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had suggested.
Could it be that Netanyahu has read the North Atlantic Treaty Organization charter, and discovered that Israel had never signed up for any assistance ?

Current NATO Members: Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States.

#1  NATO...as in mostly EUroweenies?

How would you like to have a platoon or two of EUroweenies in Texas say...or perhaps Montana or even Tennessee?

Just to see that things were done
"properly."

How about sending some EUroweenies down to Quantico to "restore order"? Have them show us how its done. We could really learn a lot.

John Kerry is out of touch..somewhat.

#2  I'm not in favor of NATO playing security guard there, but they're still better quality than what the UN usually gets for talent.

And there are Euroweenies in the US. I have several units of Royal Marines and other British units here in my little corner of mountainous desert. Tough bastards. Once in a while the Germans and French show up for a couple of weeks for special exercises.

There are usually German pilots training in various parts of Arizona. The weather is consistently better than Europe and there are plenty of practice ranges. They used to train in Texas as well, but I've been out of that loop for years.

I'd bet they'd love to meet you and have you recite your wee bit of tepid prose to them. You might even get away with telling them you were a warrior - once.

#5  AlanC has a point: imagine a situation in which NATO security forces in the West Bank/Jordan River Valley come under fire from the Islamic jihadi flavor of the month. What will they be authorized to do? Suppose the 'flavors' blow up a school bus filled with Israeli kids and the NATO commander is ordered to prevent the Israelis from 'retaliating' -- what to do?

It puts NATO in a no-win situation, which is precisely why Mahmoud Abbas wants NATO there in the first place.

Oh, and speaking now as a mod: Spereting, you really are an asshole.

#8  Meanwhile UNIFIL has proved to be such a wonderful success.

“Has Hizbullah avoided bringing any kind of rocket, missile or other arms into southern Lebanon because UNIFIL is there?” he said. Israel believes Hizbullah has amassed 60,000 rockets, including 5,000 with heavy warheads capable of hitting Tel Aviv."

“Under their (UNIFIL’s) mandate, they cannot stop Hizbullah and confiscate its arms, but they can write a report. There has been no UNIFIL report about any weapon of any Hizbullah person since UNIFIL has existed,” Amidror said.

Why would any Israeli believe in another false promise. You cannot outsource national security to public servants. They don't prevent hostilities, instead they file reports and wag the finger saying how inappropriate the behavior is.

Hundreds of Palestinians riot on Temple Mount after Friday prayers
[Jerusalem Post] Minutes after concluding Friday prayers, hundreds of Palestinians attacked officers with rocks at the Temple Mount. The violence came one day after police closed the holy site to Jews to avert another riot, following numerous anonymous threats from Arabs of probable violence should any Jews ascend.

According to police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld, at approximately 12:30 p.m. the group began throwing rocks at police officers stationed there, without provocation.

“Police responded immediately by entering the Temple Mount area and dispersing the rioters, using only stun grenades in order to prevent injuries,” he said.
Most folks I know hit the buffet after church, then go home to ponder the sermon, or take a nice nap. Makes one wonder about the content of the sermon and their prayers.

Palestinian Militants in Gaza Fire Rocket at Israel
[An Nahar] Paleostinian forces of Evil in the Gazoo Strip fired a rocket into southern Israel on Saturday evening but caused no casualties or damage, the Israeli military said, the fourth such attack this week.

"No damage or injuries were reported" in the latest strike northwest of the Negev desert, the Israeli army statement said.

Three rockets had slammed into open ground in southern Israel on Thursday, also without causing any casualties.

Israel often responds to such incidents with air strikes on the Gazoo Strip, but it has not yet launched any retaliatory attacks.

On Tuesday, Gazoo's Islamist rulers Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, said they had redeployed a 600-strong special security force tasked with preventing cross-border rocket fire, after reports it had pulled the unit back two days before.

The Hamas force was deployed to the area on January 21, but it was withdrawn last weekend as a protest at four Israeli air strikes on Hamas training camps in the coastal enclave.

While Hamas itself does not routinely fire rockets, Israel says it holds the group, which seized power in Gazoo in 2007, responsible for such attacks.

Iran rebels claim seizure of 5 border guards
[DAWN] An Iranian rebel group on Saturday posted photos on twitter of five men it claims are border guards it seized near Pakistain.

Jaish al-Adl is a little known organization that operates in Iran's border area with the neighboring country.

Semiofficial Fars news agency said in a report Monday that the five Iranian guards have reportedly been taken to Pakistain.

Jaish al-Adl's name was raised for the first time in October when they killed 14 Iranian border guards in an ambush.

Iranian authorities hanged 16 members of the rebel group in retaliation for the ambush.

Jaish al-Adl is widely believed to be a Saudi-backed ultraconservative salafi group which aims to punish the Islamic Theocratic Republic for its support of Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

Syria Barrel Bomb Raids on Aleppo Kill 20
[An Nahar] New aerial bombardment from explosives-packed barrel bombs in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo killed at least 20 people on Saturday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The raids came as in the oil-rich east, the al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front and allied Islamist rebel groups launched a new offensive against the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
(ISIL).

The Observatory said 20 people including two children were killed in separate barrel kabooms on Aleppo's eastern rebel-held neighborhoods.

Hundreds of people have been killed in several waves of barrel bomb assaults, each lasting several days, since December 15, the Britannia-based group says.

Thousands of people have fled the areas being targeted.

The raids come as government forces press an advance into the east and north of Aleppo city, large swathes of which fell to the opposition after a massive rebel offensive in July 2012.

Rights groups have condemned the regime's use of barrel bombs as indiscriminate.

On Saturday, helicopters also dropped barrel bombs on Daraya, a rebel bastion southwest of Damascus, which has been under siege for more than a year.

In a separate development, Al-Nusra Front and rebel brigades including the powerful Ahrar al-Sham launched a new offensive in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor against their erstwhile ally ISIL, the Observatory said.

While ISIL was once welcomed by rebels battling Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Supressor of the Damascenes...
, abuses by the group turned much of the opposition against them.

Saturday's offensive comes just over a month after three massive rebel alliances declared war against ISIL in much of the north.

Both Al-Nusra and ISIL grew out of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, but have split in Syria.

More than 1,800 people, mostly fighters, died in January fighting between rebels and ISIL in northern Syria.

Saturday's festivities come a day after ISIL took over several rival rebel bases in Hasakeh province north of Deir Ezzor.

Both Deir Ezzor and Hasakeh are strategic because they lie on Syria's border with Iraq.

Deir Ezzor is a key conduit for ISIL to send weapons and fighters from Iraq into Syria.

Strict Security Measures near Defense Ministry HQ amid Reports of 'Terrorist Attacks'
[An Nahar] Security measures were boosted near the Defense Ministry in Yarze following reports indicated that myrmidon terrorist groups have an intention to target military headquarters across Leb, including the ministry.

According to al-Joumhouria newspaper published on Saturday, the strict security measures were fortified after security agencies obtained information that high-ranking military officers will be targeted by terrorist acts.

The daily said that the security measures included the thorough inspection of passers-by and checking their identities.

On Friday, Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji announced that the army will "tighten the noose" on suspicious groups that might pose a threat to the country's security, noting that the military will not leave any Lebanese area "under the mercy of security chaos."

The army chief underlined that the military "will not renounce its right to impose stability and prevent autonomous security."

Explosions in Leb have created a climate of fear in the country, with residents increasingly nervous about unfamiliar cars and certain neighborhoods.

A series of deadly bombings have targeted Shiite districts of Beirut's southern suburbs and the eastern Bekaa valley in recent months. Hizbullah has a strong presence in the districts, and the attacks are believed to be in retaliation for the Shiite group's armed intervention in Syria in support of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

[An Nahar] A stun grenade was hurled on Saturday evening in the predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Haret Saida in the southern city of Sidon, the state-run National News Agency reported.

"The grenade was hurled near the gate of an orchard in the neighborhood," the NNA said.

"A Bangladeshi national was maimed in the arm in the incident and was transferred to the city's public hospital for treatment."

But Future TV said that the grenade was hurled near the municipality building of Haret Saida.

No injuries were however reported, the same source remarked.

"The grenade was dropped on a street facing the municipality building," LBCI television detailed, adding that the road leads to a Hizbullah compound in the neighborhood.

"Army troops have since cordoned off the area."

Meanwhile,
...back at the shattered spaceship, Fffflirgoll the Arcturan slithered stealthily toward the control room, where the humans had barricaded themselves...
local Sidon websites said a speeding car dropped the grenade behind the building, creating an atmosphere of chaos and panic among the residents of the city.

him over his alleged links to Sheikh Omar al-Atrash.

"An army unit raided a house in Jlala and arrested its owner Nawaf al-Hussein," the state-run National News Agency reported.

LBCI television explained that the arrest was made after detainee al-Atrash confessed to ties with al-Hussein.

"The arrested man was then escorted to the Ministry of Defense for investigation," LBCI added.

Later in the evening, LBCI pointed out that the brother of Nawaf al-Hussein, Abdul Aziz al-Hussein, was also detained following al-Atrash's confessions.

On Tuesday, a military examining magistrate issued an arrest warrant against al-Atrash for carrying out terrorist activities in the country.

Judge Nabil Wehbe questioned al-Atrash over his role in transporting jacket wallahs to Leb.

Al-Atrash, 24, has also been charged with detonating bombs and explosive-rigged vehicles, attacking the army in Majdelyoun and al-Awwali bridge areas in the southern city of Sidon in December and launching rockets on Israel.

Mortar fire mars aid delivery in Homs
[MIAMIHERALD] Shelling broke a United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
-brokered ceasefire in the government besieged Syrian city of Homs on Saturday as mortar rounds landed near an aid convoy as it tried to cross into the rebel-controlled old city district.

Syrian state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
reported that four members of the Syrian Red Islamic Thingy were maimed in the attack, which it described as a terrorist attack and were trapped on the rebel side as night fell and the cease-fire expired.

Both sides accused the other of breaking the cease-fire. In a statement, the Red Islamic Thingy described the attack as deliberate but made no reference to who had conducted it. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based pro-opposition group that monitors violence in Syria, blamed government forces.

The difficulties in Homs came as the United Nations Relief and Works Agency announced that it had been told to stop its aid distribution program in the Yarmouk district of Damascus because of fighting.

In a statement, UNRWA front man Christopher Gunness said the agency was pressing authorities to let it continue the program, which has delivered 6,300 food parcels since Jan. 30. Each parcel is designed to feed between five and eight people for 10 days. An estimated 18,000 civilians remain in Yarmouk, which began its existence as a Paleostinian refugee camp, but became an urban neighborhood that once was home to 160,000 people, including Syrians.

"Clashes have taken place in the northern part of the Paleostinian refugee camp in Damascus, Yarmouk, including in the area close to the distribution point where UNRWA has been handing out food parcels," Gunness said. "Citing those festivities and the insecurity in the area, the authorities have advised that UNRWA's food distribution should not continue until the area is secured."

In its statement about the mortar attack in Homs, the Red Islamic Thingy said its trucks had just begun to enter the rebel-held Hamadiyeh neighborhood Saturday morning when mortar rounds landed near the convoy, which then came under small arms fire. At least one member of the team was maimed, the statement said.

Despite the shelling, most of the aid trucks arrived at their destinations, and the Syrian government hailed the delivery of supplies to the area.

#1  Mortar fire mars aid delivery

Mortar fire also mars wood and linoleum flooring and leaves scorch marks on carpeting.

Snark of the day.
