The clearing operation was launched in the Chaparhar District of the province, and is expected to run another 10 days.

The MoI reported that so far security forces have discovered and seized weapons, ammunition and explosives, including five Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Four Somalis Charged over Kenya 'Light Bulb' Airport Attack
[An Nahar] Four Somali men appeared in court Monday to face charges of an alleged attack on a cafe in Nairobi's airport, which police had initially dismissed as an exploding light bulb.
Not a light bulb. A squib. It seems Allah wanted the gentlemen to be arrested.
Anti-terrorism police officer Leonard Bwire said the four men were charged with having "planned and executed" a failed attack on the cafe at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) last month, the region's busiest transport hub.

The men were jugged
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
with two kilograms (six pounds) of explosives.

Kenyan police chief David Kimaiyo had initially denied there had been a blast but only that "some papers caught fire after a loose light bulb fell into a dustbin that caused panic."

No casualties were reported in incident.

The four men, Hassan Abdi Mohammed, Mohammed Osman Ali, Yusuf Warsame and Garad Hassan Fer, did not plead as they needed a translator, and were booked to reappear in court on Tuesday.

The cafe is attached to the outside of the departure terminal, and security checks at the entrance of the airport have been significantly beefed up in recent weeks.

Since Kenyan troops invaded southern Somalia in October 2011 to help oust the neighboring country's Al-Qaeda-linked Shabaab hard boys, Kenya has been hit by a series of attacks.

The Shabaab claimed September's attack on Nairobi's Westgate mall, in which at least 67 people were killed.

Grenades have been hurled into restaurants in crowded areas in Nairobi as well as on the popular tourist Indian Ocean coast, and there has been a string of attacks in the remote northeast region bordering Somalia.

Kenya Charges 129 as Shebab Members after Mosque Raid
[An Nahar] More than 100 people nabbed
Please don't kill me!
after deadly rioting following a police raid on a Kenyan mosque were charged Monday for being members of Somalia's Al-Qaeda linked Shabaab Death Eaters.

"We received information that there was a jihad convention in the mosque and that's when we moved in," said local police chief Robert Kitur.

The men in the mosque then "turned violent and attacked our officers".

Judge James Ombura ordered the 129 men be held in prison until Friday to allow prosecutors to finish their investigations, when the accused are expected to enter a plea.

Four of those charged were not in court as they were receiving treatment for injuries sustained during Sunday's festivities, in which three people, including a police officer, died.

Kenyan police have in the past linked the Musa mosque to recruitment for the Shabaab.

The Shabaab claimed the September 2013 attack on Nairobi's Westgate mall, in which at least 67 people were killed.

Shabaab sympathizers and sleeper cells have been blamed for a series of deadly but much smaller attacks over the past two years in Kenya.

Security sources said the authorities are weighing the closure of the mosque.

Muslim cleric gunned down in Nigeria

has been rubbed out with his wife and child in northern Nigeria, locals and his family said on Sunday.

Unknown gunnies opened fire on Adam Albani's car on Saturday in the city of Zaria, as he drove home from teaching a theology class.

Suspicions will likely fall on Boko Haram for carrying out the shooting, as Albani had criticised the group and given his support to the Nigerian military campaign against them.

His theology class was in the Tudunwada area of Zaria, where soldiers had carried out raids on two suspected bully boy hideouts in the past.

Local resident Mohammed Usman said Albani's wife and son were hit, while the gunnies appeared to have dragged the holy man from the car and shot him at close range.

"We kept hearing gunshots very close to our homes and later we heard the sound of a car retreating and when we later came to the scene we found Sheikh Albani lying outside the car with lots of bullet holes on him," he added.

"He was still alive but his wife and a child she was holding in the front seat were already dead while the rest of the children sitting in the back seat were unharmed."

Albani's brother Kaburu Adam said the preacher died shortly after he was admitted to hospital.

The preacher had been a close ally of another prominent holy man, Jaafar Mahmud Adam, who was rubbed out at his mosque in the northern city of Kano in April 2007.

Zaria, which is predominantly Mohammedan, developed as a city in the 15th century and is one of the oldest in northern Nigeria, priding itself on a reputation as a centre for Islamic and Western scholarship.

Four policemen shot dead in Karachi
[DAWN] Gunmen on cycle of violences late Monday rubbed out four coppers in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, police said.

The incident occurred in Ibrahim Hyderi area, a poor neighbourhood in the eastern part of the port city where the coppers were on duty.

"The attackers came on cycle of violences, they opened fire on the police and fled away," senior police official Munir Sheikh told AFP, adding that "all four coppers died in the attack".

No group has yet grabbed credit for the attack.

Karachi, a city of 18 million people which contributes 42 per cent of Pakistain's GDP, has been plagued by sectarian, ethnic and political violence for years.

Rangers are currently taking part in a joint operation with police in Karachi aimed at cleansing the city of gunnies and other hardcore criminals, including hired killers, gun runners and drug peddlers.

Earlier last month a Taliban suicide kaboomer killed one of Pakistain's best-known police commanders, famed for his fearless work tackling faceless myrmidons in the city.

Chaudhry Aslam, the head of the criminal investigation department who had survived numerous liquidation attempts in the past, died along with two other officers when a bomber targeted a police convoy on an expressway in eastern Karachi.

Iraq
Al Qaeda severs ties with militant group in Syria and Iraq
[LATIMES] The general command of Al Qaeda has declared publicly that it has no link to one of its best-known affiliates, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, which is waging a brutal guerrilla war in both Middle Eastern nations.

The Islamic State is "not a branch of Al Qaeda," has no "organizational relationship" with Al Qaeda and its actions cannot be linked to Al Qaeda, declared a blunt statement issued by Al Qaeda's Pakistain-based central command. The statement was posted on several jihadist websites early Monday.

Not only did Al Qaeda not endorse the Islamic State's creation, the statement said, but it previously ordered the group to cease operations, without success.

Today, the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, boasts a territorial influence that stretches from Anbar province in Iraq to the rebel held stretches of northern Syria. Its ranks in Syria are reported to include thousands of non-Syrians, including other Arab nationals, Europeans and Russians who have flocked to Syria to perform "jihad." The Islamic State's trademark weapon is the suicide boom-mobile.

The public rebuke came after months of friction between Al Qaeda's leadership and the Islamic State. The latter group spun off from the former Islamic State of Iraq, which was established as the krazed killer group's franchise in Iraq. In April 2013, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria declared its birth, saying it had merged with a krazed killer faction known as Al Nusra Front. That faction had gained notoriety for its car kabooms inside Syria.

But Al Nusra Front officials and Al Qaeda's leader, Ayman Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area. That is not a horn growing from the middle of his forehead, but a prayer bump, attesting to how devout he is...
, rejected the merger as a power play.

Since then, the Islamic State has earned a reputation for targeting other rebel groups it accuses of apostasy, implementing its extreme interpretation of Islam in the areas it controls, and abusing civilian supporters of the opposition.
Apostatizing for fun and profit...
Last month, fierce fighting broke out in Syria between the Islamic State and a new rebel alliance that included Al Nusra Front. Several hundred people have reportedly died in the infighting among rebels, which continues in some part of Syria.
This is, of course, a good thing.
The Islamic State was subsequently pushed out of a number of areas but continues to hold ground throughout northern Syria and is a major power broker in the northeastern rebel stronghold of Raqqah, the first Syrian bustling provincial capital to fall completely into rebel hands.

Iraqi forces kill 57 Islamist militants in Sunni province
[REUTERS] Iraqi troops and allied rustics killed 57 Islamist forces of Evil in Anbar province on Monday, the Defense Ministry said, in advance of a possible assault on the Sunni Mohammedan rebel-held city of Falluja.

There was no independent verification of the toll among the Death Eaters, said to be members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
(ISIL), a jihadi group also fighting in the civil war in neighboring Syria.

ISIL forces of Evil and other Sunni groups angered by the Shi'ite Mohammedan-led Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
government overran Falluja and parts of the nearby city of Ramadi in the western province of Anbar on January 1.

The Defense Ministry statement said most of the 57 forces of Evil had been killed in the outskirts of Ramadi, but gave few details.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has held back from an all-out assault on Falluja to give time for a negotiated way out of the standoff, but mediation efforts appear to have failed.

Troops intensified shelling of Falluja late on Sunday and security officials said a ground assault would follow soon.

"The assault has to take place on Falluja, sooner or later," said a top security official directly involved in dealing with the stand-off. "The time for talking ran out."

The official said the army was tightening its siege of the city and would continue shelling it for at least three days to weaken Death Eater positions and drive remaining residents out.

"We will not enter as long as there are civilians inside," the official told Rooters on condition of anonymity. "We want them to leave, and they will leave under the pressure of daily bombardment."

A resident of Falluja said many families had moved to the city's western districts because other areas were being shelled, and the army was fighting forces of Evil in the north.

Maliki has appealed for international support and weapons to fight al Qaeda, although critics say his own policies towards Iraq's once-dominant Sunni community are at least partly to blame for reviving an insurgency that had climaxed in 2006-07.

Last year was Iraq's bloodiest since 2008, according to the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
, and the violence monitoring group Iraq Body Count has said more than 1,000 people were killed in January alone.

Six bombs targeting Shi'ite areas of Storied Baghdad province killed at least 20 people on Monday, police said. Two of the bombs blew up in the town of Mahmudiya, about 30 km (20 miles) south of Storied Baghdad, killing eight people. Two more blasts occurred in the capital.

Separately, police said they found the bodies of four people, one of them a woman, who had been shot in the head or chest in southwestern Storied Baghdad.

Two soldiers were killed in festivities with gunnies in Baquba, a city 65 km (40 miles) northeast of Storied Baghdad, a military source said.

No group has grabbed credit for Monday's attacks but Shi'ites are often targeted by Sunni forces of Evil who have been regaining strength, especially in Anbar, which borders Syria.

Al Qaeda said on Monday it had no links with ISIL, a group whose precursors fought U.S. troops in Iraq and which is now playing a powerful but divisive
...politicians call things divisive when when the other side sez something they don't like. Their own statements are never divisive, they're principled...
role in Syria's civil war, as well as driving the insurgency in Iraq.

Southeast Asia
Philippines to hunt down remaining BIFF rebels
Philippine military officials yesterday said they would hunt down remaining splinter groups of hardline Muslim militants after capturing their main camps in a week-long offensive.

The threat posed by members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) has diminished due to the offensive that began Monday in remote parts of Mindanao, said Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Zagala. He said, "They have split into smaller groups and further operations must be done to follow up."

He said these operations would be "smaller in scale," adding that they would also be held in coordination with the main Muslim militant group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

The operation against the BIFF began two days after the government and the MILF successfully concluded peace talks. The BIFF broke away from the MILF over the talks and has previously launched attacks to derail the peace process.

At a military camp in the town of Awang, Philippine soldiers displayed items they recovered from the BIFF camps including bomb-making materials and photos showing young boys being trained as soldiers for the militant group. This supported accusations that the BIFF were using child soldiers and that three such youths were among the 53 militants killed in the recent offensive.

Syria Opposition Coalition Member's Son Dies in Regime Jail
[An Nahar] The son of prominent Syrian activist and opposition National Coalition member Fayez Sara has died after being tortured in a prison in Damascus, his father and the Coalition said Monday.

The Coalition's press office announced "the death of Wissam Fayez Sara in prison under torture" in a statement, and his father also confirmed the news on Facebook.

"After all the blows we have been dealt, and all the blows that our people have been dealt -- killing, arrests, displacement and destruction -- they told us today that Wissam was tortured to death in the military security branch in Damascus, two months after he was tossed in the slammer
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
in Damascus," Sara wrote on his Facebook page.

He said his son, a 27-year-old father of two, had joined "the deaders of Syria."

"Wissam was one of the first among the youth in the revolution to go out, protest and work in activism against the dictatorship," he wrote.

He said his son was a "peaceful fighter," and had been arrested for the first time in the spring of 2012 along with his elder brother Bassem, before being released.

Wissam was arrested again in December 2013 and "then tortured to death," he wrote.

Fayez Sara has been a member of the Coalition's political committee since August 2013.

He has been active in opposition, leftist and labor union circles in Syria for decades, and was among the signatories of the Damascus Declaration calling for reform.

He has been arrested multiple times and spent two years in prison in the late 1970s for his involvement with leftist groups.

He was also held for a month at the beginning of the Syrian uprising in March 2011, and now lives in Turkey.

They were arrested at the entrance of the al-Hermel-al-Qaa region.

Investigations are underway with the Lebanese driver of the vehicle because of his lack of car verification papers.

2 Hurt as Suicide Bomber Blows Up Passenger Van in Shwaifat
[An Nahar] A jacket wallah went kaboom! Monday inside a passenger van in the Shwaifat area, south of Beirut, leaving two people maimed, including the minibus driver.

Caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said a suicide bomber entered the passenger van minutes before the kaboom.

"A man wearing an boom belt boarded a public minibus in Shwaifat and went kaboom!," Charbel told al-Mayadeen television channel.

According to state-run National News Agency, the kaboom went off inside the van near the al-Rishani gas station.

It said the van driver and owner Hussein Dib Msheik was critically maimed while a woman identified as Amal al-Ahmadiyeh was also injured in the kaboom. The two were rushed to the Kamal Jumblat Hospital for treatment.

Red Thingy communications director Ayad Monzer confirmed the attacker was killed in the latest blast, and two others were maimed.

"The bomber was killed, and two others were maimed. A man, who is at death's door, and a woman with moderate injuries," he told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"A white van carrying a license plate with the number 375121/M was passing on the Shwaifat road when it went kaboom!," OTV said.

"The Hyundai van that went kaboom! is registered in the name of a man from the Msheik family and it was carrying a genuine red license plate," LBCI TV said.

Ali Msheik said on LBCI TV that his brother Hussein was the man injured in the blast and had been driving the minibus.

"When the bomber got on, he noticed that his stomach area looked bulky and asked him about it, then the bomber detonated his explosives," he said.

He told the channel that his brother was undergoing surgery in a nearby hospital after surviving the attack.

Voice of Leb radio (100.5) said the driver usually transports passengers from Shwaifat to Dahiyeh.

Quoting Red Thingy sources, al-Mayadeen said "human remains belonging to one person were found at the Shwaifat blast scene and three maimed people were rushed to hospitals."

"Security forces are interrogating a taxi driver who shuttled the suicide bomber to the al-Rishani gas station in Shwaifat," LBCI reported.

Meanwhile,

security sources told MTV that "the bomb was not big but it contained metallic balls aimed at causing major damage."

Later on Monday, the army announced that the suicide bomber used "a belt containing five kilograms of explosives."

State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr asked the relevant authorities to start probing the blast, tasking a doctor to conduct DNA tests in a bid to identify the suicide bomber.

Shwaifat lies south of Beirut, not far from the suburbs of the city, which have been targeted in multiple kabooms in recent months.

Footage from the scene broadcast on Lebanese TV stations showed the mangled remains of a vehicle surrounded by shards of glass and other material in the middle of the road.

The blast comes after at least four people were killed in a suicide kaboom on Saturday in the Bekaa town of Hermel, where Hizbullah has widespread support.

Leb has been hit by a string of kabooms in recent months, many targeting areas sympathetic to Hizbullah which has dispatched fighters to battle alongside the Syrian regime against rebels seeking to oust Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

Extremist jihadist groups believed to be linked to those fighting in Syria have grabbed credit for most of the attacks, saying they will continue for as long as Hizbullah fights in Syria.

But while the blasts have apparently targeted the group, the victims of the attacks have been almost exclusively civilians.

At least 36 dead in air strikes on Syria’s Aleppo
At least 36 people were killed Sunday in regime air strikes and aerial attacks with explosive-packed barrels on the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, a monitoring group said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said regime aircraft carried out a series of deadly air strikes for a second day in eastern parts of the city. Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP that most of the dead were killed in several raids in which regime helicopters dropped so-called barrel bombs on the Tariq Al Bab district.

He said 21 people were killed in three strikes in the eastern neighbourhood, among them 13 children. The other deaths were in additional air strikes and barrel bomb attacks in the city, which is divided between regime and rebel control.

The latest bloodshed comes a day after at least 85 people were killed in a string of barrel bomb attacks and aerial raids, according to the Observatory.

Government troops have been advancing in the area around Aleppo city, once the country’s economic hub. The Al Watan newspaper, which is close to the government, said Sunday that government troops had seized control of most of the east Karam Al Turab district — which the Observatory confirmed.

The newspaper said troops were seeking to take control of several eastern and northern districts in a bid to recapture large swathes of the city, where fighting began in mid-2012.

In recent months, the army has seized parts of the province from rebels, including the area around Aleppo airport, which was closed for nearly a year because of fighting nearby.
