[CNBC] House Republicans "capitulated" in agreeing to the two-year budget deal reached last night and left the country to deal with an unsustainable fiscal situation until the peak of the presidential primaries in 2015, when nothing will get done, former federal budget director David Stockman told CNBC on Wednesday.
"First, let's be clear--it's a joke and betrayal," Stockman, who served under President Ronald Reagan, said on "Squawk on the Street." "It's the final surrender of the House Republican leadership to Beltway politics and kicking the can and ignoring the budget monster that's hurtling down the road."
Stockman added that the budget deal means politicians would take a "two-year vacation" from dealing with the country's fiscal situation and revisit it in 2015 at around the same time as the Iowa straw polls. Without an incumbent in the presidential race, both political parties will be too busy to touch the budget, he said.
Yuval Levin has read the actual bill, and is more sanguine. There's even a pretty, multicoloured graph.

Buried in the bill is the senate tax nuclear option which allows tax increases to pass with a simple majority. I have a feeling that will come back to hurt everyone.

"Capitulation" possibly, but a fight over the budge right now would divert attention from the sinking ship of Obamacare. All eyes must remained fixed on the primary target, as the screws become visible and the stern slips beneath the swirling waves. If the seizure and theft of one-sixth of the economy cannot be averted, little else matters.

Now that's an interesting take Besoeker. I figure the gigantic powered shit honey barge that is the PCU ObamaCare needs at least 2 more torpedoes. When the first enrollies (with no card) stagger into the ER will be one, that should be what, Feb-March? The second will be late, the cancellations and changes of employer provided care.

I'm conflicted. I agree with Besoeker in that I want Obamacare to be front and center. If that goes badly enough the Republicans gain lots of seats and can fix the budget next year.
If we sequester again that will be 24/7 on the news shows.
As Instapundit says, "It's like peeling an onion of fail".
Oregon, once touted as a model for President Obama's health care law, signed up just 44 people for insurance through November, despite spending more than $300 million on its state-based exchange.
The state's exchange had the fewest sign-ups in the nation, according to a new report today by the Department of Health and Human Services.
The weak number of sign-ups undercuts two major defenses of Obamacare from its supporters.
One defense was that state-based exchanges were performing a lot better than the federal healthcare.gov website servicing 36 states. But Oregon's website problems have forced the state to rely on paper applications to sign up participants.
Another defense of the Obama administration has attributed the troubled rollout of Obamacare to the obstruction of Republican governors who wanted to see the law fail as well as a lack of funding.
But Oregon is a Democratic state that embraced Obamacare early and enthusiastically. Its outreach effort, which included a folk-style music video featuring a singer playing an acoustic guitar against a colorful and scenic backdrop, had been praised among the law's supporters.
And the more than $300 million in federal grant money the state received to build and promote its exchange topped all but two other states - the much more populous New York and California.
