#2  Madge Evans (July 1, 1909 – April 26, 1981) was an American stage and film actress. She began her career as a child performer and model.

Born as Margherita Evans, Madge Evans was featured in print ads as the 'Fairy Soap girl' as an infant. She made her professional debut at the age of six months, posing for artist's models. As a youth, her playmates included Robert Warwick, Holbrook Blinn, and Henry Hull. When she was four years old, Evans was featured in a series of child plays produced by William A. Brady. She worked at the old Long Island, New York movie studio. Her success was immediate, so much so that her mother loaned her daughter's name to a hat company. Evans posed in a mother and child tableau with Anita Stewart, then 16, for an Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company calendar, and as the little mountain girl in Heidi of the Alps.

At the age of 8 in 1917, Evans appeared in the Broadway production of Peter Ibbetson with John Barrymore, Constance Collier and Laura Hope Crews. At 17, she returned to the stage and appeared as the ingenue (stock character) in Daisy Mayme. Some of her best work in plays came in productions of Dread, The Marquis, and The Conquering Male. Her last appearance was in Philip Goes Forth produced by George Kelley. Evans' mother took her to England and Europe when she was 15.

As a child film actress, Evans had quite a prolific career appearing in dozens of films. Later, she worked in radio and television in New York City. Evans performed on the Philco Television Playhouse (1949–1950), Studio One (1954), Matinee Theater (1955), and The Alcoa Hour (1956). She refused repeated offers to return to Hollywood. She retired in 1971.

U.N.: Sudan's Darfur Tribal Battles Killed 190
[An Nahar] Tribal fighting this month between rival Arab groups in Sudan's East Darfur killed 190 people, the United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
said on Friday.

According to reports received by the U.N., "100 Reizegat rustics were killed and another 140 were maimed, while on the Maaliya side 70 were reportedly killed and 113 were maimed" at one location, the U.N.'s weekly Humanitarian Bulletin said.

During the fighting a Rezeigat source had told Agence La Belle France Presse that his side killed 70 Maaliya while 30 of his own men were killed.

In its bulletin, the U.N.'s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said another 20 Rezeigat were reportedly killed and 45 injured in festivities at a separate location, where an unidentified number of Maaliya were killed.

On Thursday night the Rezeigat and Maaliya signed a document for "peace, co-existence and cessation of hostilities," the official SUNA news agency reported.

"Aid operations in East Darfur have been severely curtailed as a result of the fighting and general insecurity," OCHA said in its bulletin covering the period to August 18.

Non-Arabs in Darfur rose up 10 years ago against what they saw as the domination of Sudan's power and wealth by Arab elites.

In response, government-backed Janjaweed militias shocked the world with atrocities against them.

Team involved in tracking Benghazi suspects pulling out, sources say
Two weeks after the B.O. regime announced charges against suspects in the Benghazi attack, a large portion of the U.S. team that hunted the suspects and trained Libyans to help capture or kill them is leaving Libya permanently.

Special operators in the region tell Fox News that while Benghazi targets have been identified for months, officials in Washington could "never pull the trigger." In fact, one source insists that much of the information on Benghazi suspects had been passed along to the White House after being vetted by the Department of Defense and the State Department -- and at least one recommendation for direct action on a Benghazi suspect was given to President B.O. as recently as Aug. 7.

Meanwhile,
...back at the palazzo, Count Guido stepped from behind the suit of armor, rapier in hand. Ciccolini snarled and reached for his own weapon...
months after video, photo and voice documentation on the Benghazi suspects was first presented to high-level military leaders, the State Department and ultimately the White House, prison breaks in the country have eroded security. U.S. special forces have now been relegated to a "villa," a stopover for the operators before they're shipped out of the country entirely.

"We put American special operations in harm's way to develop a picture of these suspects and to seek justice and instead of acting, we stalled. We just let it slip and pass us by and now it's going to be much more difficult," one source said, citing 1,200 prisoners escaping two weeks ago. "It's already blowing up. Daily liquidations, bi-weekly prison escapes, we waited way too long."

Libyan colonel gunned down
[OMANOBSERVER] Gunmen killed a Libyan army colonel in a drive-by shooting yesterday in the eastern city of Benghazi, a security source said.

"Unknown gunnies in a car with tinted windows shot and killed Colonel Mustafa al Aguili," the source said.

"The attack took place after the victim left a mosque in the Al Hadaiek neighbourhood of Benghazi, following the main Friday prayers," the source added.

On Monday a judge was also bumped off in Benghazi as he was leaving a mosque.

Benghazi has been rocked by a series of killings of soldiers and police who served under the former government.

New York-based Human Rights Watch
... dedicated to bitching about human rights violations around the world...
warned this month of "a broadening wave of apparent political liquidations in the cities of Benghazi and Derna in volatile eastern Libya" and criticised the authorities for failing to hold anyone accountable.

Several Thousands Join Cairo Protests against Morsi Ouster
[An Nahar] Several thousand demonstrators joined at least three marches in different parts of the Egyptian capital on Friday to protest the ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, Agence La Belle France Presse correspondents said.

Loyalists of the deposed president had called for 28 marches throughout Cairo, though many appeared sparsely attended.

Friday's rallies are being seen as a test for Morsi loyalists and the Moslem Brüderbund organization from which he hails.

At one, in Cairo's southern Maadi district, several thousand protesters marched from the Al-Rayan mosque to Arab Square. They chanted "coup, coup" and "down with military rule."

"We will never lose faith in our cause. We will fight until our last drop of blood," said protester Tareq Hossam.
"We shall shed our blood for you, Saddam!"
Protester Khaled Abdel Hamid, an accountant, said he had lost 11 friends when security forces cleared a pro-Morsi camp in Cairo's Rabaa al-Adawiya square on August 14.

Hundreds of people were killed during the dispersal and in festivities that followed, in Egypt's bloodiest day in decades.

"We will protest until we remove the coup and restore legitimacy," Abdel Hamid said.

In Mohandesseen district, around 2,000 people gathered, chanting "the interior ministry are thugs."

But the march stopped short of an army cordon set up close to a nearby square, an AFP correspondent said.

In the past few days, Egyptian authorities have enjugged
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
hundreds of members of the group, including its supreme guide.

Brotherhood members have gone into hiding, and some told AFP they were no long receiving directives and had stopped communicating by phone for fear of arrest.

Morsi supporters abduct TV crew: Channel editor
[Al Ahram] Five employees of Egypt's Mehwar TV channel were held hostage for several hours late Friday by Moslem Brüderbund protesters in Cairo's Helwan district, the channel's editor-in-chief, Beshir Hassan, has said.
Making friends and influencing people...
Police eventually released the hostages and tossed in the calaboose
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
the armed kidnappers, Al-Ahram's Arabic news website reported.
Guess which way they'll be reporting events involving the Muslim Brotherhood from now on.
In a phone call to El-Balad TV channel, Hassan said the abductors contacted the channel and said the crew would be in danger if Mehwar did not air a live video of a pro-Morsi protest in Helwan.

Hassan said the channel complied with the abductors' threats and aired 15 minutes of the protest before the battery of the Live View, used to transmit the footage to the channel, died.

The protest had a maximum of 200 people, Hassan stated.
That was a definite shoot-yourself-in-the-kneecap. In the old days two weeks ago, they were able to call up tens of thousands.
Ahram Online could not reach a Brotherhood spokesperson for a comment on the incident.

The Moslem Brüderbund and its allies held protests on Friday to commemorate the killing of around 700 people during the police's dispersal of two pro-Morsi sit-ins in Cairo and Giza on 14 August. Turnout at the protests was lower than expected.
Hmm. You don't suppose they didn't want to be added to the body count?
Moslem Brüderbund leaders, including Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie, have been arrested in recent days.

Insurgents kill 35 in Nigeria attack
[OMANOBSERVER] Insurgents dressed as soldiers opened fire in Nigeria's far northeast this week, killing at least 35 in the second such attack this month, officials said yesterday.

"Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
people attacked the village on the ground that they have refused to co-operate with them, that they refused their message," defence front man Brigadier General Chris Olukolade said of the incident in Dumba. "The report that was presented has it that 35 people were killed and 14 maimed."

The attack occurred on Monday, but the information did not become public until yesterday with phone lines cut in the region and the village located in a remote area.

A separate military source said Boko Haram gunnies dressed as soldiers entered the village early on Monday and took up positions at a crossroads, where they fired on people. The source said the attack was believed to be in reprisal for a raid by soldiers and vigilantes in the village the previous week.

Bahrain Shiites Protest for Political Reforms
[An Nahar] Shiite protesters erupted into the streets in Bahrain Friday demanding political reforms in the Sunni-ruled Gulf kingdom, witnesses said.

Protesters marched along Budaiya highway, which links Shiite villages west of the capital, following a call by Bahrain's main opposition groups.

Brandishing Bahrain's red and white flags and posters of detainees, demonstrators braved high temperatures and hollered poorly rhymed slogans against the government.

"O, Khalifa, step down," chanted protesters addressing Bahrain's veteran prime minister, Prince Khalifa bin Salman, an uncle of King Hamad
...King of Bahrain (since 14 February 2002), having previously been its emir (from 6 March 1999). He is a Sunni, while the rest of Bahrain is predominantly Shiite...
, who is despised by the Shiite majority.

"Our homeland cannot remain a hostage to a small group that controls power and wealth," said a statement by the opposition led by Al-Wefaq, the main Shiite formation.

"It is the right of the Bahraini people, including all its groups, to have a peaceful rotation of power," it said, referring to its demand for a real constitutional monarchy with an elected premier.

US imam gets 25 years prison for Pakistani Taliban support
[Dawn] An elderly Moslem holy man in South Florida has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for funneling tens of thousands of dollars to the Pak Taliban.

US District Judge Robert Scola imposed the sentence Friday on 78-year-old Hafiz Khan, who was convicted in March of four terror support-related charges.

Federal prosecutors recommended a 15-year sentence and Khan faced a maximum of 60 years.

Trial evidence showed Khan arranged to send about $50,000 over a three-year period to Pakistain. Prosecutors argued the money helped finance violent attacks against both US and Pak targets.

Khan told the judge Friday the money was for family, friends and a religious school he founded.

Before his 2011 arrest, the imam at a Miami mosque, Khan also founded a religious school, or a madrassah, in Pakistain's Swat
...a valley and an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistain, located 99 mi from Islamabad. It is inhabited mostly by Pashto speakers. The place has gone steadily downhill since the days when Babe Ruth was the Sultan of Swat...
Valley.

The madrassah was closed for a time by Pakistain's government as a suspected hideout for Taliban fighters, though it later reopened.

Two of Khan's sons, Izhar and Irfan, were initially charged along with their father but the charges against them were dismissed. Three others in the indictment, including Khan's daughter, remain free in Pakistain, which will not allow them to be extradited to the US.

Eleven killed in Bhakkar sectarian clashes
[Dawn] Members of a radical Sunni group clashed on Friday with minority Shia's in central Pakistain, fighting that killed 11 people.

Six people had initially been killed in violence. The corpse count has now increased after five people, who had been injured in the festivities, later gave up the ghost.

The festivities between Ahle Sunnat Waljamaat (ASWJ) members and the Shia's happened in the town of Bhakkar in Punjab province, police official Abdullah Khan said.

People were killed on both sides, Khan said.

The conflict followed a protest rally held by ASWJ after one of their members was bumped off while closing his shop.

Pakistain has experienced worsening sectarian violence in recent years, especially attacks by radical Sunnis targeting Shia's.

Also on Friday, gunnies on a cycle of violence opened fire outside a Sunni seminary on the outskirts of the capital, Islamabad, killing two people and wounding a third, police official Mohammad Bashir said.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken notice of the festivities.

The Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Moslemeen has condemned the festivities and have declared three days of mourning.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Israel violates Lebanese airspace
[OMANOBSERVER] The Israeli air force struck a Palestinian group in Lebanon yesterday, officials said, hours after a different organisation said it had fired four rockets at the Jewish state.

The raid, which the Lebanese army said caused no casualties or damage, nonetheless drew condemnation from the Lebanese government as a violation of its sovereignty after it had vowed to hunt down the perpetrators of Thursday's rocket fire.

Lebanese President Michel Sleimane, who had condemned Thursday's rocket fire, also denounced the Israeli retaliation, adding that he had asked Foreign Minister Adnane Mansour to lodge a complaint with the UN Security Council.

"Border violations are a matter settled by the UNIFIL panel of inquiry and not by aggression and violation of Lebanese sovereignty as Israel did in Naameh," his office said.

Israeli aircraft "targeted a site located between Beirut and Sidon in response to a barrage of four rockets launched at northern Israel yesterday (Thursday)," the military said.

"The pilots reported direct hits to the target."

Palestinian and Lebanese officials said the target was a position of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine -- General Command (PFLP-GC), a group that said it had nothing to do with Thursday's rocket fire.

The salvo of four rockets, which caused damage but no casualties, was claimed by the Abdullah Azzam Brigades.

Israeli army spokesman Brigadier General Yoav Mordechai said the rockets were "launched by the global terror organisation".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had threatened retaliation, saying on Thursday that "anyone who harms us, or tries to harm us, should know -- we will strike them."

Twin blasts at Lebanese mosques kill at least 43
Two powerful explosions at two mosques in Lebanon's northern port city of Tripoli
...no, not that one, the other one...
killed at least 43 people on Friday, Lebanese police said, dpa reported. More than 500 people were wounded in the blasts, which occurred minutes apart, according to the Lebanese Red Thingy Cross.

The head of the Lebanese Red Thingy Cross, George Kettaneh, told dpa: "We have dozens of injured in critical condition," indicating that the death toll could rise.

A Red Thingy Cross volunteer said efforts continued to collect body parts of people blown up in the bombings.

The first explosion took place in the Sunni-dominated district of al-Zaherya, as worshippers were leaving the Taqwa mosque. The second bombing targeted the Salam mosque in the district of al-Mina.

Lebanese television stations aired footage of bloodied victims and heavily damaged buildings. Men were seen running through the streets calling for "jihad" (holy war) against "the enemies of Islam."

A Lebanese army source at the scene told dpa the car bomb which detonated near al Taqwa mosque was loaded with 100 kilograms of explosives.

One witness, Hosni Kabbara, said he heard the first explosion and a few minutes later heard another powerful blast, which shook his building. His two daughters were injured.

By nightfall, bearded gunmen had deployed onto some of Tripoli's streets, establishing control points and checking identities.

Tripoli is home to Muslim Sunni extremist groups, with close links to al-Qaeda.

Members of radical Sunni organisations in the city held an urgent meeting following the blasts, and announced that they would protect their areas themselves. But Sunni moderate leaders called for restraint, emphasizing that the Lebanese army should be the sole protector of the Lebanese people.

Tripoli has recently seen deadly violence between backers and opponents of the armed uprising against President Bashar al-Assad in neighbouring Syria.
