#7  For those who haven't heard yet, you should consider disabling or, better yet, removing Java from your computers entirely until the folks there get serious about doing their job and make it secure. Pretty much all of the nasty malware these days uses any of the many vulnerabilities they offer to take over your computer and make it do stupid stuff. Like the Saudis do to Obean.

Afghanistan
Two aid workers killed in northern Afghanistan
[Iran Press TV] At least two Afghan aid workers have been killed and two others maimed in a shooting attack in Afghanistan's northern province of Jowzjan, Red Thingy and Red Islamic Thingy officials say.

The officials said on Wednesday that the attack was carried in the Khanaqa district on Tuesday when unknown gunnies opened fire on the employees of the Afghan Red Islamic Thingy Society (ARCS) while their mobile clinic was travelling to the scenic provincial capital Shiberghan.

Robin Waudo, the communication director of the International Committee of the Red Thingy (ICRC), said, "It looks like they were deliberately attacked. The vehicle was clearly marked."

No group has yet claimed the responsibility for the attack although similar incidents are usually blamed on the Talibs.

Sudan rebels group say 'ready' for peace talks
[Bangla Daily Star] Rebels in Sudan's South Kordofan state yesterday said they are ready to talk with the Sudanese government in Æthiopia next week over ending a two-year-long war.

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) told AFP that African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
mediator Thabo Mbeki
...former president of South Africa, succeeding Nelson Mandela. He now pops up periodically as a mediator when something catches fire in Africa...
had sent rebel chairman Malik Agar an invitation "for peace talks in Addis Ababa on the 23rd of April."

"We replied that we are ready," rebel front man Arnu Ngutulu Lodi said.

If the two sides meet face-to-face it would be the first direct talks in almost two years, Lodi said. The rebels and government have met indirectly through African Union mediators in a failed attempt
Curses! Foiled again!
to secure humanitarian access throughout the warzone.

But talk of peace came amid heavy fighting.

Rebels again shelled the state capital Kadugli on Wednesday, targeting what Lodi described as "military bases."

He said they also fired on a military outpost several kilometres (miles) east of the capital, where an ammunition storage facility went kaboom!.

"Today there is heavy fighting around Dandor," a garrison about 18 kilometres (11 miles) east of Kadugli which government forces were trying to retake after rebels seized it on Monday, Lodi said.

But army front man Sawarmi Khaled Saad told AFP his troops had "liberated" Dandor.

"In reaction to that, the rebels tried to create a disturbance in Kadugli, shelling the town," Sawarmi said.

Residents of the town could not be immediately reached.

Sudan's foreign ministry said three civilians died in rebel shelling of Kadugli during weekly prayers last Friday, as President Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. held talks in the South Sudanese capital Juba with his counterpart Salva Kiir in a symbol of easing tensions, particularly over the South's alleged support for SPLM-N.

Despite the attack on Kadugli, on Sunday the official SUNA news agency quoted Ibrahim Ghandour, head of the government's negotiating team, as saying his side was set and "waiting for the time of the negotiation."

7 Sudan officers jailed over coup plot walk free
[Al Ahram] Seven Sudanese military officers sent to jail after being convicted over a coup attempt walked free on Wednesday, just days after they were sentenced, an AFP news hound witnessed.

The seven converged on the home of Brigadier Mohammed Ibrahim, who had received the heaviest sentence of five years in prison.

Wearing civilian clothes and shouting "holy shit! Allahu akbar" (God is greater), they were greeted by hundreds of supporters, relatives and neighbours as celebratory gunfire sounded.

It was not immediately clear why they were freed early but they had requested a presidential pardon on April 9, two days after their sentencing.

The officers could potentially have been executed for the case which analysts have said reflected political turmoil within the 24-year regime of President Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. , who himself took power in a coup.

A military court ordered the soldiers dismissed from the military and issued sentences ranging from two to five years in prison for the plot.

They asked Bashir to pardon them as "political prisoners" under a wide-ranging amnesty which he announced early this month, the army said.

"Now we are free and the case is finished for us," Ibrahim said in brief comments to news hounds, after revellers slaughtered four sheep and hoisted the smiling officers on their shoulders.

Algeria thwarts Mali arms smuggling
[MAGHAREBIA] Algerian security forces on Saturday (April 13th) intercepted an arms shipment from Libya to cut-throats in northern Mali.

Special Forces eliminated five cut-throats during the operation. They reportedly belonged to al-Qaeda splinter group Movement for Tawhid and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) and were in charge of protecting the arms shipment.

Wakt El Djazair quoted a security source as saying that a counter-terrorism military unit, supported by two helicopters, was able to destroy two SUVs carrying five gunnies. The difficult chase of the two SUVs was conducted by the joint security forces in the pastoral region called the Valley of Guineen, located about 190 kilometres from the Bordj Badji Mokhtar district in Adrar wilaya.

Ansar al-Sharia leader escapes assassination
[MAGHAREBIA] The leader of Libya's Ansar al-Sharia branch in Derna escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday (April 14th).

Sofian Ben Qumu (aka Abou Fares) was not hurt in the attack near Ras al-Hilal, between al-Bayda and Derna, Ansar al-Sharia spokesperson Youssef al-Jahani said.

Satellite channel Al-Hurra, however, said Qumu had been wounded in his shoulder.
"Abu! Yer shoulder!"
"It's jest a scratch, Clint! Cover me!"

Immediately after the shooting, Ansar al-Sharia militiamen surrounded their leader's home.

A security source speculated to AFP that a tribe that had accused the militia chief of killing one of its members last week was behind the ambush.

Ben Qumu led rebel forces in Derna during the revolution. He fought alongside al-Qaeda in Afghanistan before being detained in 2004 by the Pakistani authorities.

He is suspected of involvement in the September 2012 killing of US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and other Americans in Benghazi.

The failed assassination came five days after Ansar al-Sharia commander Yahya Abdel Sayed was murdered in Sirte.

The assassination attempt "might have been related to revenge or part of the post-revolution repercussions", Benghazi University lecturer Ahmed Youssef, said.

Reasons for the attack could include "personal revenge or political agenda of members of groups or movements described as Islamist".

Former Abu Slim prisoner Jamal Aziz al-Shaari was running Derna, Ansar al-Sharia spokesperson Youssef al-Jahani noted, but denied that there were clashes between Ben Qumu and the family.

"This is part of conflicts among radical groups," blogger Salim al-Ragie said on his Facebook page. "Salafist groups, most of which use takfir as a basis for their political ideology and the establishment of their Islamic emirate, have such a history."

"With the proponents of exclusionist ideology and radicals, everything is possible," government employee Munira Saleh said. "I advise them to benefit from specialised scholars and to learn the true meaning of religion and differences between sects. Our scholars must respond to Ben Qumu and his likes."

Egypt army dispatches team to Sinai following Eilat attack
[Al Ahram] "Egyptian lands are not and will not become a source of threats to neighbouring states," an Egyptian military spokesman asserted on Wednesday, following a rocket attack on the southern Israeli resort city of Eilat earlier the same day.

The Israeli army claims that two rockets were fired from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Wednesday, neither of which, it says, caused any casualties.

Egyptian military spokesman Colonel Ahmed Mohamed Ali said via Facebook that the Egyptian Army had dispatched technical teams to Sinai to investigate claims that the rockets had been launched from the peninsula.

A Salafist group, the 'Lions of the Mujahedeen Shura Council in the Environs of Jerusalem,' allegedly claimed Wednesday's attack, AFP reported.

For his side, Major General Alaa Ezzedine, head of Egypt's Strategic Centre of the Armed Forces, denied that rockets had been fired from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula into the Israeli Red Sea resort of Eilat.

Ezzedine said that Israel was responsible for determining the location from which the rockets were fired, arguing that such an incident proved the "failure" of Israel's Iron Dome anti-missile system, recently deployed around Eilat, which did not intercept the rockets.

He told Ahram Online that the Egyptian armed forces were currently working on a strict plan aimed at stopping "law breakers" located Sinai.

Rockets fired from Egypt slam into Israeli resort town
[CSMONITOR] Two rockets fired from Egypt's Sinai peninsula landed in the southern Israeli city of Eilat today, a popular resort town, apparently causing no damage or injuries but nevertheless underscoring elevated security threats as Israel faces a regional security vacuum.

Islamist jihad boy group Magles Shoura al-Mujahddin grabbed credit for the attack in a statement on its website, according to Israeli newspaper Haaretz. The group said the attack was retaliation for the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) attack on Paleostinians who were protesting the death of a Paleostinian inmate in an Israeli prison.

Today's incident was only the latest of many cross-border attacks on Israel launched from the Sinai Peninsula since the ouster of geriatric former President-for-Life Hosni Mubarak in January 2011. Some of the attacks have been fatal -- a substantial shift for the normally quiet region running along the lengthy border separating Israel and Egypt.

North Korea Bars South Delegation from Kaesong
[An Nahar] North Korea on Wednesday barred a delegation of South Korean businessmen from delivering food and supplies to 200 of their staff inside the closed Kaesong joint industrial zone.

Ten representatives of the 123 South Korean firms in Kaesong had applied for permission to visit the zone, two weeks after the North blocked all access amid soaring military tensions on the Korean peninsula.

"Moments ago, North Korea informed us that the request for a visit by 10 representatives of the business companies at Kaesong had been turned down," Unification Ministry front man Kim Hyung-Seok said.

Turkey arrests 10 on suspicion of arming Syria rebels
[FRANCE24] Security forces in the Central Anatolian province of Konya detained 10 people yesterday on suspicions of supplying weapons and personnel to Syrian rebels fighting against President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

The operation came after some families complained that their children were being recruited by a radical extremist group, leading police to launch an investigation that ultimately resulted in the detention of 10 people who were accused of funneling weapons and personnel to militants, Doğan news agency reported.

Authorities Circulate Photos Of Two Men Spotted Carrying Bags Near Site Of Boston Bombings
[NYPost] Investigators probing the deadly Boston Marathon bombings are circulating photos of two men spotted chatting near the packed finish line, The Post has learned.
See photos at link with the two men circled.
In the photos being distributed by law-enforcement officials among themselves, one of the men is carrying a blue duffel bag. The other is wearing a black backpack in the first photo, taken at 10:53 a.m., but it is not visible in the second, taken at 12:30 p.m.

"The attached photos are being circulated in an attempt to identify the individuals highlighted therein," said an e-mail obtained by The Post. "Feel free to pass this around to any of your fellow agents elsewhere."

Meanwhile,
...back at the revival hall, Buford bit the snake and Eloise began speaking in tongues...
officials have identified two potential suspects who were captured on surveillance videos taken shortly before the deadly blasts, law-enforcement sources told The Post yesterday.

Authorities know the names of the two men, but do not have enough evidence to make an arrest for Monday's attack, which killed three and maimed 176, the sources said.

Status of forensics investigation in Boston
Long, long piece from the Daily Mail UK -- and why is it that the UK papers routinely beat the American papers for this type of coverage?

Good analysis, lots of photographs (many graphic) and video, and a long re-cap of what is known. There is also a re-hash and, towards the bottom, a lot of "man in the street" type interviews and quotes. You may have seen parts of this elsewhere, but the Mail writers do an excellent job of pulling it together. Recommended, especially if you feel behind in coverage. If you want just the forensics, read the first third or so.

The two groups headed towards each other under the baking central European summer sun for a rare and unusually large exchange of captured spies. India-Pakistan
Pakistan's Musharraf flees court to avoid arrest
Former Pakistani military ruler Pervez Musharraf and his bodyguards pushed past policemen and sped away from court in the country's capital Thursday to avoid arrest after his bail was revoked in a case accusing him of detaining senior judges while in power.

The 69-year-old Musharraf jumped into a black SUV and escaped as a member of his security team hung to the side of the vehicle in a dramatic scene that was broadcast live on Pakistani TV. Lawyers shouted, "Look who is running, Musharraf is running!"

He raced to his large compound on the outskirts of Islamabad, which is protected by high walls, razor wire and guard towers. He holed up inside
...checking Expedia to see what was outbound to Riyadh, preferably a non-stop...
as dozens of police and elite commandos blocked the main road that runs to the compound and kept the converging crowd at bay. About 20 Musharraf supporters held banners and shouted slogans in favor of the former military ruler.

None of the security forces protecting the compound made any move to arrest Musharraf, likely because they were awaiting word from senior officials trying to figure out how to deal with a delicate situation.

5 Dead as U.S. Drone Destroys Taliban Base in Pakistan
[An Nahar] A U.S. drone fired two missiles into a Taliban training camp in Pakistain on Wednesday, destroying the compound and killing at least five turbans, local officials said.

The attack took place in the Baber Ghar area of the South Wazoo tribal district on the Afghan border, a stronghold of Pak Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud where the faction runs several camps.

Another official in Wana, the main town in South Waziristan, confirmed the attack and told AFP the drone targeted a base of Tehrik-e-Taliban, Pakistain's umbrella Taliban faction.

Iraq
Iraq Bombings Kill Three Ahead of Polls
[An Nahar] Bombings in Iraq, including one against an MP's convoy, killed three people and maimed 18 on Wednesday, just days ahead of the country's first elections since U.S. troops departed, officials said.

In the deadliest attack, a boom-mobile went kaboom! near an army checkpoint in Abu Ghraib, west of the capital, killing two people and wounding six, while another boom-mobile in the Jihad area of south Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
killed at least one person and maimed six, an interior ministry official and medical sources said.

A roadside kaboom targeted a convoy carrying an MP from the secular, Sunni-backed Iraqiya bloc in Madain, south of Storied Baghdad, wounding four people but not the politician, while a magnetic "sticky bomb" on a civilian car maimed two people in Mansur in west Storied Baghdad, they said.

An estimated 13.5 million Iraqis are eligible to vote for more than 8,000 candidates standing in Saturday's provincial elections, all running for 378 seats.

Iraqi forces are solely responsible for polling security, the first time they have been without support from American or other international forces during elections since dictator Saddam Hussein was toppled in 2003.

Southeast Asia
Four arrested for checkpoint attack in southern Thailand
Four terrorists suspects were arrested yesterday for an assault Tuesday night on a checkpoint in Narathiwat's Si Sakhon district, which left two volunteer rangers wounded. The four terrorists men - Abdulrohim Yusoh, Adulrohman Rona, Adema Taya and Saree Saemarae - reportedly have confessed their role in the attack.

Investigation found that the ten terrorists attackers were divided into two teams. One terrorist team was responsible for lobbing four grenades - one of which did not go off - while the other terrorist team fired assault rifles at the 14 officials manning the checkpoint. The 10 p.m. assault led to a 10-minute gun battle, and police yesterday collected some hundred spent bullets at the site.

After several shootings in Pattani's Thung Yang Daeng and Muang districts, as well as a roadside-bomb attack on Tuesday that killed a soldier and left several others wounded, security teams searched houses in targeted areas yesterday. They arrested six suspected terrorist insurgent sympathisers, aged 18-20, in Thung Yang Daeng and another four suspected terrorist sympathisers, aged 25-35, in Muang.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria bars entry of chemical weapons team
Syria has still not allowed a team of experts into the country despite its call for the United Nations to investigate alleged chemical weapons use by rebels, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday.

Syria has asked the UN to investigate a chemical weapons attack in March on the village of Khan Al Assal outside of Aleppo, which the regime blames on rebels and the rebels blame on regime forces.
But don't let the chemical weapons team in to investigate...
Ban is urging the Syrian government to accept an expanded UN probe into alleged chemical weapons use, saying he has concluded that a claimed attack in Homs in December also warrants investigation.

Syria’s government wants the investigation limited to the single Khan Al Assal incident and last week rejected the expanded investigation.

Britain and France had asked the UN to investigate allegations of chemical weapons use in Khan Al Assal and another village, Ataybah, in the vicinity of Damascus, in March, as well as in the central city of Homs on Dec. 23.

The inspection team is in Cyprus awaiting permission to enter Syria.

Saleh rejected any escalation in the situation in Tripoli, calling on the government and competent security agencies to launch an investigation into the matter.

The official denounced the attempt on his life pointing out that the aim is to "create tension between the rival neighborhoods of Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh.

Army rocket fire kills 12 in Syrian village
[Bangla Daily Star] Army rocket fire on a central Syrian village yesterday killed at least 12 people including women and kiddies, a watchdog said, as warplanes attacked rebel enclaves near central Qusayr.

Aircraft also struck Karam Huweimed and Tariq al-Bab in the northern city of Aleppo, as well as a rebel-held town nearby, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"The number of people killed in rocket fire by the army on eastern Bweida has risen to 12, among them a boy and a girl, two women, and eight men," said the Observatory, referring to the village in the central province of Homs.
