Afghan-Pakistan border guards trade fire: Afghan officials
[Dawn] Authorities in Afghanistan said Tuesday that one of their border posts came under a shelling attack from Pakistain, prompting Afghans to return fire in a clash that lasted for more than two hours.

The incident, which reportedly caused no casualties, comes amid growing border tension between the neighbours, with Kabul alleging that Pak security forces have fired hundreds of rounds into Afghanistan in recent months.

Pak officials were not immediately available for comment but Islamabad has rejected similar allegations in recent past, saying Pak troops only respond to attacks from jihad boys.

Afghanistan and Pakistain typically blame each other for violence by Talibs plaguing both sides of their border, known as the Durand Line.

Afghanistan's interior ministry said Afghan border police and Pak security forces traded artillery fire in eastern Kunar province's

Dangam district on the frontline between the two countries, but there were no casualties.

"One of our border posts came under fire this morning from across the border. Our border police returned fire and the clash lasted for more than two hours," Najeeb Nikzad, an interior ministry front man, told AFP.

"No one has been hurt on our side and there are no reports of casualties on the other side either," he added.

He said Pak forces fired about 50 rounds -- 20 artillery and 27 mortar shells.

Afghanistan's parliament earlier this month dismissed the country's defence and interior ministers over alleged security failures, including the shelling of Afghan soil from Pakistain.

#1  No casualties....
Do they have pre-arranged empty fields to shoot into? Sure make things easier for both sides.
Considering how easy it is for snuffy to cross the border, getting a line on the other guys' positions oughtn't be difficult. Looks as if they actively avoid trouble, while making diplomatically useful noise from time to time.

Egypt Sentences 14 Islamists to Hang for Sinai Attacks
[An Nahar] An Egyptian court sentenced 14 Islamists to death on Tuesday for the 2011 murder of seven people at a bank and a police post in the Sinai Peninsula, scene of mounting violence near the border with Israel.

The court in the Suez Canal city of Ismailiya convicted the 14 of carrying out the attacks in June and July last year on behalf of the hardline group Tawhid wal Jihad (Monotheism and Holy War).

One civilian was among the dead.

The verdict came amid a massive crackdown by the army on growing lawlessness in the Sinai since the overthrow of veteran strongman Hosni Mubarak

Official: Egypt forces detain 2, seize computer in Sinai
[Ma'an] Egyptian security officials say they seized documents detailing the names and operational information of snuffies in Sinai on Tuesday during a raid in Sheikh Zuwaid.

A security official told Ma'an that festivities erupted when the Egyptian army raided al-Goura village and a neighboring Bedouin camp, leading to a shootout in which one Egyptian soldier was injured.

A man identified as Muhammad C and his brother were placed in long-term storage
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
from al-Goura, while other suspected snuffies escaped, the security official said.

Egyptian soldiers seized a computer containing data including the identities of "terrorists" working in the area and communication between them, he added.

Meanwhile,
...back at the palazzo, Count Guido had escaped from his bonds and overwhelmed this guard using the bludgeon the faithful Filomena had smuggled to him in the loaf of bread...
large military forces, together with special forces, launched operations in el-Arish and surrounding villages early on Tuesday.

Witnesses told Ma'an that an Apache helicopter escorted ground forces.

Late Monday, a group of gunnies shot up a checkpoint in el-Arish city, a security source said. No injuries were reported.

A similar incident took place on Sunday when two men in a four-wheel-drive vehicle opened fire on a cop shoppe in the city. Police fired back but the men escaped, the source said.

in al-Goura on Monday, as troops searched for those those responsible for the killing of 16 border guards on Aug. 5. Four of the snuffies were Egyptian and one was Paleostinian, security sources said.

Seven gunnies were killed on Sunday in a north Sinai village when Egyptian troops stormed the area, security officials said.

Pro-Saleh Troops Attack Yemen Defense Ministry
[An Nahar] Yemeni troops from the elite Republican Guard force, led by the son of ousted president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
, attacked on Tuesday the headquarters of the defense ministry, witnesses said.

The forces laid siege to the ministry in Sanaa before attacking it with machineguns and rocket-propelled grenades, witnesses told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The attack comes a week after new president Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi ordered a restructuring of army forces, reducing the number of units under the command of rival chiefs including Saleh's son.

The troops led by General Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh blocked the roads leading to the ministry in central Sanaa, said witnesses, who added that they had come from the main base of the Republican Guard in Sawad, south of the capital.

Other witnesses said that these forces exchanged fire with police on their way to the ministry.

Yemeni army reinforcements were deployed around the residence of Hadi, who replaced Saleh in an Gulf-brokered peace deal that ended 13 months of protests against the veteran leader, witnesses said.

Other reinforcements were stationed around the central bank where employees were evacuated, other witnesses said.

In a presidential decree last week, Hadi ordered the formation of a "presidential protection" force which will include three brigades from the Republican Guard.

The force will also include a brigade from the First Armored Division led by General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar who defected to the anti-Saleh opposition last year, official news agency Saba reported.

Hadi assigned other brigades from the two rival units to the central and southern regions, it added.

Under the terms of the peace agreement, Hadi is tasked with restructuring the military and security apparatus, which had been controlled by officials with close ties to Saleh and accused of corruption.

"When they witnessed the shooting, children playing nearby started throwing stones at the fleeing suspects who resorted to random firing but left their cycle of violence behind and bravely ran away," the officer said.

Southeast Asia
Philippine troops capture rebel bases
Philippine troops have occupied Tuesday two Muslim terrorist rebel encampments used as a base for attacks on military and civilian targets in a remote area of the province of Maguindanao.

Officials said ground forces, backed by helicopter gunships, attacked the bases used by the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement in the town of Datu Hoffer and forced the terrorists rebels to abandon their camps.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, but a statement from the 6th Infantry Division said the bases were former villages of indigenous tribe called Teduray who were forced out of their communities by terrorists rebels.

The statement said the bases called Hill 714 and Hill 166 were also used by rebels to train child warriors. It said, "Those Hills were formerly Tedurays community. Later was turned into training venues for child warriors and used then as the staging point for the BIFF rebels in planning their atrocities against soldiers and civilians in nearby communities."

It said security forces have secured the area and that troops were searching for booby traps and bombs.

The terrorists rebels attacked various military detachments last week in retaliation to the killing of a BIFM member supposedly by government soldiers, an allegation strongly denied by army spokesman Col. Prudencio Asto. He said, "That’s not true. The BIFM launched the attacks to disrupt ongpoing peace talks between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front."

The BIFM was established by Ameril Umra Kato, a senior leader of the MILF who broke from the terrorist rebel group, to pursue an independent Islamic state in the south.

Terrorist Rebel spokesman Abu Misri Mama said they were simply defending themselves from military assaults. In a clandestine interview, he said, “We did not start the fighting. It was the military and soldiers were also behind the burning of many houses and attacks on civilians."

Bomb blast rocks Damascus
DAMASCUS: A massive bomb attack and a firefight shook Damascus on Wednesday. The rebel Free Syrian Army claimed the bomb attack targeted a military headquarters near a hotel used by UN observers as a warning to President Bashar Assad that it could strike anytime at the very heart of the regime.

A gunbattle also erupted between rebels and troops near the offices of new Prime Minister Wael Al-Halqi, who took office after his predecessor defected last week, and a new Iranian embassy building that is still under construction.

“There was a huge explosion and a fireball, and soldiers were thrown to the ground by the blast,” a military officer told AFP at the scene, adding that five people suffered burns or shrapnel wounds. No UN staff member was hurt.

Hizbullah Denies Party Member Detained in Damascus
[An Nahar] Hizbullah denied on Monday that the Free Syrian Army captured a member of the party in Damascus
...The capital of Iran's Syrian satrapy...
, Hizbullah's media relations department said.

"Al-Arabiya news channel reported that the FSA placed in durance vile
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
a member of Hizbullah identified as Sayyed Hassan Sallim al-Meqdad. The party denies these claims," said the statement.

Al-Arabiya reported earlier that the FSA was able to detain a member of Hizbullah who allegedly entered Syria within a group of 1,500 people who spread in Damascus, Aleppo

and Homs.

The channel aired a video showing al-Meqdad confessing that Hizbullah chief His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
The satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb...
ordered him to head to Syria to "support the Shiite Syrian regime" against "the Sunni gunnies known as the FSA."

Al-Meqdad, who is allegedly a sniper, noted that he hadn't infiltrated to Syria through illegal crossings, saying he was offered all the facilities on the border.

"We were a group of 250 in Damascus and resided in the Shrine of Sayeda Zeinab," he said.

He confessed most of the snipers are being trained in the eastern Lebanese city of Baalbek.

Al-Meqdad urged Nasrallah to "halt his scourge of the Syrian people, who is only seeking freedom and a dignified life."

Fresh fighting erupts in Syria's Aleppo
[Dawn] Fresh fighting erupted Tuesday in Syria's second city Aleppo
...For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppans regard Damascenes as country cousins...
, where the army shelled several rebel-held areas, a rights watchdog said, after a bloody day in which 160 people were killed nationwide.

"Fighting broke out between government forces and rebel fighters in the (southwestern) districts of Saif al-Dawla and Salaheddin alongside kabooms in the area," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Salaheddin is controlled by regime forces, although there are pockets of rebel fighters, according to the Britannia-based watchdog.

A civilian was rubbed out by a sniper in Saif al-Dawla, the second rebel stronghold in the northern city, where the army advanced Monday with the help of tanks and armoured vehicles.

Government forces also pounded the rebel-held eastern districts of Sakhur, Hanano and Shaar, the Observatory said.

In the capital Damascus
...Capital of the last remaining Baathist regime in the world...
, residents fled the central neighbourhood of Qaboon, fearing a major military onslaught, as security forces raided the districts of Midan in the south and Shaghur in the centre.

Government forces had launched a major sweep of the capital on Monday, including the historic Old City, arresting at least 22 people, according to the Observatory.

Outside the city, government forces shelled the suburbs of Qudsaya and Daraya, while elsewhere in the province of Damascus, a civilian and a defected soldier were killed in the town of Al-Tal.

The opposition Syrian National Council called attention to the situation in Al-Tal, describing it as a "disaster area" after five days of army shelling.

The Council urged "all capable citizens to come to the aid of the town with any means possible and to break the siege of the criminal regime by providing food and medical aid to the people."

Elsewhere, a woman was rubbed out by a sniper in the southern province of Daraa, bringing Tuesday's initial toll to four people killed.

On Monday, 100 civilians, 19 rebels and 41 soldiers were killed across Syria, according to the watchdog. Among the casualties were 60 people killed in Damascus province alone, including 57 civilians.
