David Cameron and George Osborne are to come down firmly on the side of those who object to payments currently worth £400 million a year to companies who produce onshore wind, The Sunday Telegraph has learned.
Despite opposition from the Liberal Democrats, who strongly support more renewable energy, the subsidy regime for onshore wind and solar panels is now firmly expected to be phased out by the end of the decade.

You would be more familiar with the ins and outs of the British politics that I, Bright Pebbles, but from what I can discern this is one of several areas where the Tories and LibDems differ, leading to compromises with lots of behind the scenes maneuvering.
[Rooters]Official vote projections from Greece's interior ministry showed the pro-bailout New Democracy taking 29.5 percent of the vote, with SYRIZA in second place with 27.1 percent. The Socialist PASOK followed in third place with 12.3 percent.

[Dawn] Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani ... Pakistain's erstwhile current prime minister, whose occasional feats of mental gymnastics can be awe-inspiring ... Saturday said conspiracies are being hatched against the democracy in the country and warned that the present government will foil all such conspiracies and protect the democratic system.
"There are conspiracies against the democracy and to damage the democratic system but the Pakistain People's Party (PPP) will protect the democracy at all cost and will not allow anti-democratic forces to derail the process," said the prime minister while addressing a public meeting here.

The mysterious unmanned mini-space shuttle on a classified mission has finally returned to earth. It landed early Saturday morning at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California after weather conditions kept pushing back landing attempts the last few days.
The Air Force's X-37B, is an unmanned reusable spacecraft built by Boeing that has spent more than a year on a classified mission in space. Measuring 29 feet in length and having a 15-foot wingspan, the unmanned reusable X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle looks like a miniature version of NASA's now retired space shuttles.
The spacecraft landed at Vandenberg at 5:48am PDT after having spent 469 days in orbit.
The craft went into orbit on March 5, 2011, but as was the case during its first launch in 2010, very little has been known about its mission or what payloads it might be carrying because its missions are classified. That has led to speculation that the spacecraft is involved in intelligence gathering operations or the testing of new technologies.
In keeping with the scarce mission details for the X-37B, all the Air Force would say in a statement Saturday wais that the spacecraft had "conducted on-orbit experiments" during its mission.
Designed to stay in extended Earth orbits, the X-37B remained in orbit for 224 days during its maiden mission in 2010. This mission kept it in orbit more than twice as long this time around.
An Air Force statement announcing Saturday's landing says the X37B will launch again later this fall aboard an Atlas V booster.

They were testing to see if the Pentagon's laundry could be cleaned this way.
On Thursday, an Indonesian man was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for denying God's existence on his Facebook page. Alexander Aan, of West Sumatra, was found guilty of inciting religious hatred and tarnishing Islam. The 30-year-old was also fined the equivalent of $10,600.
It's that whole 'freedom of thought' idea: as Fred has explained it in the past, if you don't have that freedom, you don't have any others.
Aan was accused of writing "God doesn't exist," and posting links to explicit cartoons showing Mohammed having sex with a maid, and being attracted to his daughter-in-law. He also reportedly started the Facebook group "Ateis Minang," Minang Atheist.
Aan was arrested in January after an angry mob reacting to the posts stormed his office and beat him. Police intervened and took Aan to the police station for his safety.
In a written statement in February, Aan said he regretted his deeds and prayed for God's mercy. After the ruling Aan said, "I accept the judgment and will abide by it. For me, faith is a personal matter and I have expressed my regret and apology to every party, including my family."
Aan's lawyer said they will appeal the verdict, contending Aan had no intention of inciting religious hatred and was simply in a period of religious confusion at the time.
