-Short Attention Span Theater-
OK, sometimes those TSA searches are worthwhile
Miami International Airport has led the way in the latest technology for airport security. One airport passenger learned this the hard way when he was trying to sneak seven exotic snakes onto a plane...in his pants.
"Izzat a snake in yer pants or are you... Awww. Ferget it."
The incident happened on August 25th when security were screening passengers with a millimeter wave advanced imaging technology machine. It was there when the TSA officials noticed a little big extra in the passenger's pants.

When taken for further screening, TSA officials discovered seven exotic snakes and three tortoises held in nylon bags that were concealed inside the man's pants.

The man was arrested and charged with violating the Lacey Act, which deals with imports of exotic animals.

Afghanistan
Suicide Attack at NATO Base in Afghanistan
[An Nahar] A team of Taliban suicide kaboomers struck at a U.S.-led NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
reconstruction team in unstable south Afghanistan Sunday, officials said.

The attack hit the provincial reconstruction team (PRT) in Qalat, the capital of Zabul province. Initial reports suggested that a couple of people were maimed.

PRTs are typically joint military and civilian operations that work on trying to help build Afghan government capacity in a province. There are around 28 of them in total across Afghanistan.

The deputy governor of Zabul, Mohammad Jan Rasoulyar, said that the incident was now over.

"I can confirm that a group of Taliban attackers, some of them suicide attackers, have conducted attacks on the PRT as well as police headquarters. There has been one big blast near the PRT office," Rasoulyar said.

"At first, there was a huge suicide car boom, then the gunfire started."

Afghan interior ministry front man Siddiq Siddiqui confirmed that there had been a suicide car booming at the PRT.

"The attacker rammed his car into the wall of the PRT office. Initial information shows that two people have been injured in the blast," Siddiqui said.

General Mohammad Salim Ihsas, the police commander for the region, said that four suicide attackers struck at the PRT.

"One of them let 'er rip at the gate of the PRT while three attackers stormed the PRT compound causing property damage," he said.

"One suicide attacker was incarcerated with a rocket launcher and AK-47, another suicide attacker was incarcerated maimed, the third one bravely ran away and the police are trying to catch him."

Ihsas also said two people were maimed in the attack -- a man and a woman, both civilians.

The Taliban grabbed credit for the strike in a phone call by front man Qari Yousuf Ahmadi to Agence La Belle France Presse.

A front man for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) did not immediately have information on the attack.

In May, four people were killed in the western city of Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
when the Taliban launched an attack on the Italian-led PRT there and another strike elsewhere in the city.

Bomb misses AU force in Mogadishu, kills woman
MOGADISHU: A roadside bomb apparently targeting a convoy of African Union peacekeepers killed a woman on Sunday in the Somali capital Mogadishu, witnesses said.

Abdulle Mantaan, a staff officer at a nearby food distribution center, told Reuters the remote-controlled bomb had detonated as the second of two AU force armored vehicles drove by. A male passerby was also wounded.

“We heard a big bomb blast near us ... We took (the wounded man and woman) to Keysane hospital where the woman died of wounds after minutes. That mother used to come to our feeding center to collect biscuits for her malnourished children,” Mantaan said.

“The bomb was targeted at a convoy of AMISOM (AU peacekeeping forces). It detonated when the last car passed ... AMISOM soldiers glanced back at the scene but proceeded since the blast did not harm them,” he added.

The AU confirmed the attack. “We are safe, there has been no damage or injury. We know al Shabaab have left more explosive devices so we are always vigilant,” deputy AU spokesman Prosper Hakizimana told Reuters.

Anti-Gadhafi forces say supplies coming to Tripoli
Meanwhile,
...back at the sandwich shop, Caroline was experimenting with ingredients of increasing volatility...
the Libyan opposition says supplies of food, water and fuel will begin arriving in the capital Tripoli on Sunday as they consolidate power in the capital.

People in the capital are struggling with severe shortages of fuel, water, and electricity. Libyan officials said on Sunday they hope to restart production at the Zawiya oil refinery as soon as possible to alleviate severe fuel shortages in the country.

Fuel prices in Libya have skyrocketed since the conflict broke out last February between forces loyal to Qadaffy
...Custodian of Wheelus AFB for 42 long years...
and rebels who now control much of the country.

Mohammed Aziz, operations manager at the Zawiya refinery, some 50 kilometres west of Tripoli, said the facility was getting ready to restart production on Monday. He said the capacity of the refinery was 120,000 barrels a day before the fighting started, but it had fallen to 60,000 barrels a day during the conflict.

Qaida Branch Says Responsible for Algeria Bombing
[An Nahar] Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb said Sunday it had carried out a twin suicide kaboom on an Algerian military academy that killed 18 people.

A brief statement emailed to Agence La Belle France Presse in Morocco said AQIM "claims responsibility for the two martyr operations" on Friday which "targeted the heart of Algeria's Cherchell military institution", about 100 kilometers from the Algerian capital.

The authenticity of the statement, sent by a man identifying himself as "Salah Abou Mohamed, official in charge of information of the Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb organization" could not immediately be ascertained.

The text said another statement on "jihadist sites" would be published at a later date.

The suicide kaboom also maimed 26 people.

The bombers, one on a cycle of violence, reportedly set off kabooms a few seconds apart in front of the entrance to the academy's officers' mess hall, just as soldiers were assembled to break the Ramadan fast.

Ramadan is generally considered a good time for holy war, or jihad, by Islamist groups. Since the fast started in early August, there have been many attacks east of Algiers, especially in Kabylie, targeting the army and police.

Authorities in Algeria generally remain tight-lipped about such incidents, which have not ended despite a policy of national reconciliation adopted in the early 2000s by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika
... 10th president of Algeria. He was elected in 1999 and is currently on his third term, which is probably why Algerians are ready to dump him...

Fierce Fighting as Rebels Tighten Noose on Gadhafi Hometown
[An Nahar] Libyan rebels closed in on Moammar Qadaffy
...who single-handedly turned a moderately prosperous kingdom into a dictator's fantasyland...
's hometown of Sirte from both east and west Sunday, a senior military commander said, as the bully boyz scrambled to restore essential services to Tripoli.

Fierce fighting was also raging in the west of the country as rebels trying to take full control of the region said they had fallen into an ambush in a town southwest of Zuwarah.

Rebel forces moved to within 30 kilometers of Sirte from the west and captured Bin Jawad 100 kilometers to the east, the rebel commander in Misrata, Mohammed al-Fortiya, told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"We took Bin Jawad today (Sunday)" on the eastern front, and "the thowar (rebel fighters) from Misrata are 30 kilometers from Sirte" in the west, Fortiya said.

Rebels pushing west from the oil hub of Ras Lanuf had been stuck for four days outside Bin Jawad, a key town on the coast road of the Gulf of Sirte, as Qadaffy's forces kept up a defiant resistance.

Sirte is the elusive Qadaffy's last bastion after rebels smashed his forces in Tripoli and seized his Bab al-Aziziya headquarters, and now the bully boyz are focusing on capturing the Libyan leader.

Although his whereabouts remain a mystery, there is widespread speculation that Qadaffy is holed up in Sirte, 360 kilometers east of Tripoli, among tribal supporters there.

Fortiya said talks were under way with tribal leaders in Sirte for its surrender, adding that only tribal leaders were involved, and that to his knowledge no direct contact had been made with Qadaffy himself.

"We are negotiating with the tribes for Sirte's peaceful surrender," he said.

But a front man for the rebel National Transitional Council (NTC), Mahmoud Shammam, warned that negotiations for Sirte's peaceful handover would not be open-ended.

"The negotiations will not go on forever," he said. "The talks are still going on ... We would like to unify Libya very quickly."

In the capital, where life is slowly returning to normal after six months of bloody rebellion to end Qadaffy's 42-year, iron-fisted rule, sporadic gunfire was heard overnight.

As rebels scrambled to get Tripoli back on its feet and appealed for funds, the Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
early on Sunday urged the U.N. Security Council to unlock billions of dollars in Libyan assets and property.

Some 70 percent of homes in central Tripoli have no running water because of damage to the network, but potable water is being distributed from mosques, NTC officials said.

Abed al-Obeidi, deputy chief of the transitional council in Tripoli, said the water problem was because of technical faults.

"The network ... has technical failures," mainly with pumping, and "it is not due to sabotage," Obeidi said a day after NTC chief Mustafa Abdul Jalil attributed Tripoli water and electricity cuts to "sabotage by Qadaffy's forces."

Several kabooms and machine-gun fire rattled Tripoli overnight, but it was unclear if those responsible were Qadaffy loyalists or rebels celebrating the takeover of the capital a week ago.

In the rebel bastion of Benghazi, military front man Colonel Ahmed Omar Bani told news hounds more than 10,000 prisoners have been freed from Qadaffy's jails since the fall of Tripoli but almost 50,000 others are still missing.

"The number of people tossed in the clink over the past months (of the anti-Qadaffy revolt) is estimated at between 57,000 and 60,000," he said. "Between 10,000 and 11,000 prisoners have been freed up until now ... so where are the others?"

"We hope that Qadaffy is still in Libya so we can rid the world of this insect," he said. "The only way to treat this pest is to make him accountable for the crimes in Libya."

NTC head Mustafa Abdul Jalil had promised on Saturday that Qadaffy and his senior aides would be given a fair trial if they surrendered.

"We call on Moammar Qadaffy and his associates to surrender so we can protect them and spare them illegal execution," he said in Benghazi. "We guarantee them a fair trial, whatever their position."

The rebels have offered a $1.7 million-dollar reward for Qadaffy's capture, dead or alive.

The NTC chief also called for emergency humanitarian aid for Tripoli, especially medical supplies.

His plea for help was heard loud and clear at Arab League headquarters in Cairo where a special meeting of foreign ministers urged "the U.N. and countries concerned" to "unfreeze the assets and property" of Libya.

Dr Najib Barakat of a local rebel council for Tripoli said there were enough medical supplies for three or four weeks, and that some 60 percent of the capital's medical staff were at work.

"All of Tripoli's hospitals are working," Barakat said, except at Abu Slim where around 80 decomposing bodies had been found. "The bodies have been removed and the hospital is being disinfected."

Arab foreign ministers also called on the United Nations
...an organization whose definition of human rights is interesting, to say the least...
to give the NTC Libya's seat at the U.N. and its agencies.

NTC number two Mahmoud Jibril, who headed the Libyan delegation at the Cairo gathering, warned of "instability" in Libya if the rebels failed to restore salaries and services.

Shammam on Saturday appealed for patience and called on all public, private and oil sector employees to return to work.

"We are starting from point zero in this situation. Do not ask for miracles, but we promise to try to make this difficult period as short as we can," he said.

On Sunday, bully boyz expanded their control over the airport and other parts of Tripoli where some resistance remained.

They captured the base of the elite 32 Brigade, commanded by Qadaffy's son Khamis, on Saturday after a NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
air strike and seven hours of fierce fighting that left 11 rebels dead.

In an adjoining cinder-block building, an AFP correspondent saw the charred remains of some 50 people who residents said were captives killed by Qadaffy forces on Tuesday by rifle fire and grenades.

Lockerbie bomber found in Libya close to death
Not close enough...
Lockerbie bomber Abdel Basset al-Megrahi has been tracked down in Tripoli, dashing rumors that he had been taken out of the Libyan capital, The Telegraph and other news organizations are reporting.

Earlier, U.S. politicians had called on Libyan leaders to turn over al-Megrahi and that Libya's new ruling council would not. Before this most recent discovery, al-Megrahi has surfaced on occasion in Libya.

Al-Megrahi was discovered by news hounds from CNN comatose and near death, surviving on oxygen and an intravenous drip.
Link to the CNN story, with video here.
Oxygen tubes and IV lines can be disconnected quickly. He might just spring out of bed and laugh at us. I'd rather we be sure.
CNN reporters have been known to believe the most amazing whoppers, especially when the company really wants access.
The cancer-stricken former Libyan intelligence officer is being cared for by his family at his Tripoli villa.
Ah, good. Die slowly, sucker.
"We just give him oxygen," al-Megrahi's son, Khalid al-Megrahi, told CNN. "Nobody gives us any advice."
Kerosene will add body to the drip. He'll be much more comfy.
Al-Megrahi may be the last person alive who knows who in the Libyan government ordered the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, which killed all 259 people on board and 11 in the town of Lockerbie, Scotland, below, in December 1988.

Al-Megrahi was freed from prison in 2009 in Scotland after serving eight years of a life sentence. Doctors treating him for prostate cancer gave him three months to live. Authorities released him on compassionate grounds.

Rebels Say Gadhafi Son Khamis Could Be Dead in Clash
[An Nahar] Libyan rebels said Sunday that one of Moammar Qadaffy
...a reminder that a single man with an idea can screw up an entire nation...
's son, Khamis, whose death has been announced several times since the conflict erupted, may have been killed a day ago in a clash with rebels.
Anybody got the severed head? No? Keep looking then...
On Saturday, a brigade of rebel fighters in the city of Tarhuna, 80 kilometers southeast of the capital Tripoli "intercepted a military convoy which had several brand new Mercedes vehicles", rebel military front man Ahmed Omar Bani told news hounds in Benghazi.

"As our fighters were trying to block the passing of the convoy, they were violently attacked and shot at," he said.

"The brigade in Tarhuna responded and hit two vehicles in the convoy, killing their occupants. We faced strong resistance (from the pro-Qadaffy convoy) to protect these two cars which is why they were totally destroyed and burned with their occupants caught in the crossfire," Bani said.

He said "it is very difficult to identify the charred bodies, but the soldiers captured on the spot told us that they were bodyguards of Khamis Qadaffy."

"At the moment, we are unable to identify with certainty the occupants, but we will notify you once we have information," Bani added.

In March and again in early August, the rebels had announced the death of Khamis in NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the cut of the American pants...
raids. The information was immediately denied by the regime, and Khamis was subsequently seen on state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
Khamis, 28, the youngest son of Qadaffy, commanded a brigade which was seen as the most effective and loyal force of the Libyan leader. Rebel fighters captured its base south of Tripoli in fierce fighting on Saturday.

Gadhafi open to Libya power transfer
A front man for Moammar Qadaffy
...whose instability has been an inspiration to dictators everywhere...
says the deposed Libyan leader is willing to take part in a transfer of power -- a sharp contrast to earlier promises that he would fight until victory or death.

Chief front man Moussa Ibrahim said Sunday the Libyan leader is still in Libya and that one of his sons, al-Saadi, could lead talks on a transitional government.

Qadaffy's whereabouts are still unknown, however, and anti-Qadaffy forces greeted the announcement with skepticism, saying the leader has lied before.

While there is no sign of Qadaffy, there are reports that fighters with the National Transitional Council (NTC) are closing in on his hometown of Sirte from both the east and west of the city.

The commander of the anti-Qadaffy forces, Mohammed al-Fortiya, told Agence La Belle France-Presse that his troops on Sunday took control of the town of Bin Jawad, 100 kilometres to the east of Sirte.

#2  WORLD NEWS > [Newsmax]GADDAFI OPPONENTS SAY HE IS STILL A THREAT, to Libyuh + entire World.

REBEL SPOX = NATO should stay in Libya until Uncle Muammar is either killed, or else captured + brought to justice.

Speaking of which ....

To wit,

* SAME > MUAMMAR GADDAFI WILL FACE THE FIRING SQUAD IFF CONVICTED OF CRIMES AGZ HUMANITY, as per new Libyan Justice Minister.

* SAME > REBEL COMMANDERS FEAR MUAMMAR GADDAFI COULD EVADE THEM FOR SOME TIME [weeks?] IN THE SAHARA DESERT.

Uncle Muammar doin' an Uncle Saddam???

* CNN + FOX NEWS > seems the Libyuhn rebels are calling on any remaining loyalist troops or forces to either peacefully SURRENDER, OR ELSE FACE ANNIHILATION [widout mercy].

[BATTLE/SIEGE OF THE ALAMO = "DE GUELLO" = NO QUARTER here].

IMO I still hold that Uncle Muammar intends to still have a potent role in the so-called "New Libya" = post-regime Govt - I DO NOT BELIEVE HE WILL JUST GIVE UP EASILY + GO WILLINGLY INTO SELF-IMPOSED, PERMANENT, HUMILIATING EXILE OUTSIDE OF LIBYA.

I believe he personally will try to hold out agz surrrender AMAP ALAP ATAP - at minima, to attempt to forge a face-saving deal wid the Rebs, ideally where he gets to stay in Libya.

Espec given ....

E.g. IIRC WORLD NEWS > THE END OF GADHAFI REGIME IN LIBYA DOES NOT GUARANTEE A FREE PRESS.

* SAME > DECADE AFTER 9-11, ARAB SPRING HERALDS NEW ERA FOR ISLAMISTS.

No longer "on the run", but are now seemingly empowered???

ARTIC = denotes ....
> ISLAMISTS are better organized + more influential among ordinary People = Muslims than secular or anti-Islamist LIBERALS + LEFTISTS.
> Pert = argued that at the beginning of the various "ARAB SPRINGS", the ISLAMISTS PROCLAIMED TO SUPPORT A CIVIL STATE, BUT LATER ON UNMASKED THEIR FACES + CALLED FOR ESTABLISHMENT OF RELIGIOUS STATE = "ISLAMIC STATE".
> Post-Arab Springs, pro-Islamist Govts more likely to be set up in MilPol smaller or lessor Muslim States, i.e. THE MAJORITY OF ME + NORTH AFRICAN STATES?, than in traditional or historical BIG STATE MUSLIM POWERHOUSES E.G. EGYPT, WID STRONG = LONG TRADITIONS OF INTELLECTUAL DEBATE OR DISCOURSE???

* TOPIX > AFTER GADDAFI: WHAT NEXT FOR LIBYA?

I have to respect Uncle Muammar for his not giving up quickly.

Two Soldiers Dead as Sources Say Qaeda Trains Somalis in South Yemen
[Yemen Post] Two soldiers were killed and others injured when armed people ambushed a military vehicle in Yemen's southern Shabwa province, local sources were quoted as saying on Saturday.

The ambush took place east Ataq city while the soldiers were on duty guarding oil facilities, the website said.

The armed people confiscated the vehicle and bravely ran away, it said, adding that the authorities declined to comment.

Meantime, well-informed sources have told the Yemen Post that Al-Qaeda is currently training Somali people in Shabwa amid reports gunnies of those who have been fighting the army in Abyan province have infiltrated into the province.

Lately, the UNHCR said that the exodus of African refugees, mostly from Somalia, was increasing, triggering fears Al-Qaeda affiliates in the African horn country could reach Yemen's coasts as refugees.

In recent years, AQAP, which has been described as the most dangerous branch of the global Al-Qaeda network, has conducted many attacks in the south targeting military and security commanders, vehicles and convoys and offices killing and injuring dozens.

[Yemen Post] The Interior Ministry said on Saturday that the authorities had completed repairs to the Marib oil pipeline after a recent bombing that led production to halt.

The pipeline, which carries crude oil from Marib and Shabwa to the Ras Isa terminal in Hodeida province, was attacked last Monday by saboteurs in Kilo 27 in Wadi Hadramout.

The attack was the second since the pipeline was repaired in mid-July after a fourth-month halt of production due to a bombing in mid-March.

The website said the security authorities in Marib had protected the technical team which repaired the damages and that the hunt for the saboteurs will continue.

Yemen navy foils suicide attack on its warship: Ministry
[Straits Times] Yemen's navy has foiled a suicide kaboom on one of its warships off the coast of the Al-Qaeda stronghold of Abyan province in the south, the defence ministry said on its Internet site on Sunday.

'A small high-speed boat tried to approach one of our warships on Saturday' off Abyan, navy chief Rear Admiral Ruiss Abdullah Mujawar was quoted as saying on the 26sep.net site.

The vessel continued on its course despite warning shots being fired, and 'naval forces then fired at the craft, which sank along with its occupants,' he said.

The defence ministry said the small boat had been filled with explosives, but gave no information on those thought to have been behind the failed attack.

Five police killed in rebel ambush in Colombia
[Bangla Daily Star] Five coppers were killed in rural northern Colombia on Saturday when suspected leftist rebels detonated an bomb as their patrol passed by, local authorities said.

The ambush took place in the town of Gonzalez in Cesar department as the police patrol was carrying out routine operations in the area, according to officials in the local government and the police department.

Both the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia
FARC or FARC-EP, is either a Marxist-Leninist revolutionary guerrilla organization or a narco mob based in Colombia. It claims to represent the rural poor in a struggle against Colombia's wealthier classes, and opposes United States influence in Colombia, neo-imperialism, monopolization of natural resources by multinational corporations, and the usual raft of complaints. It funds itself principally through ransom kidnappings, taxation of the drug trade, extortion, shakedowns, and donations. It has lately begun calling itself Bolivarian and is greatly admired by Venezuela's President-for-Life Chavez, who seemingly fantasizes about living in the woods and kidnapping people himself. He provides FARC with safe areas along the border.
(FARC) -- Latin America's oldest rebel movement, with 8,000 fighters -- and the National Liberation Army (ELN), with 2,500 members, are active in the area.

Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera has said the two groups are increasingly using guerrilla tactics such as surprise attacks in their battle with security forces.

Norwegian police arrest man with weapons, explosives
[Emirates 24/7] Norwegian police said Sunday they had placed in durance vile a man after recovering weapons and explosives at his home, but media reports said they found no immediate link with mass-killer Anders Behring Breivik.

The suspect, known to police as a right-wing myrmidon, was placed in durance vile on Saturday after they discovered the weapons cache at his home near Oslo on Tuesday following an apparent threat from the man, who has not been named.

"The police have no information linking him to Breivik but, after the terrorist attacks, they did not want to take any risks and made the resources available to find this person as quickly as possible," the daily VG said.

His lawyer, Vidar Lind Iversen, said the suspect was being investigated for "possession of unauthorised weapons, possession of explosives, and making threats". Iversen told VG his client "recognises the possession of two hunting rifles".

Police said Sunday they were unable to confirm Norwegian media reports that a police uniform had been recovered in the search of the suspect's home.

VG reported that police had previously discovered weapons and explosives at the man's house in 2001, and that he was convicted of selling automatic weapons to right-wing beturbanned goons in the 1990s.

Iversen said his client "had contacts with extreme rightwing circles in the 1990s but no longer has today".

Behring Breivik disguised himself as a police officer when he carried out the July 22 attacks in Norway which killed 77 people.

Train attack kills three, wounds 16 near Quetta
[Dawn] Gunmen ambushed a passenger train in southwestern Pakistain on Sunday, killing three people and wounding 16 others, officials said.

Men armed with assault rifles attacked the passenger train in Mach town, some 50 kilometres southeast of Quetta, the capital of the insurgency-hit southwestern province of Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
, which borders Afghanistan and Iran.

"Three people have been killed and 16 were maimed in the attack," Naseeb-Ullah, provincial home secretary told AFP by telephone.

"We have imposed an emergency in the hospitals while the seriously injured have been taken to Quetta's main hospital," he added.

Police said about two dozens attackers fired on the train when it reached Mach, which lies deep in the mountains.

A railway official confirmed the incident.

One Intelligence official in Quetta blamed the attack on Baloch Islamic fascisti who are fighting for more political rights and a greater share of profits from the region's natural resources.

Hundreds of people have died in violence in the province since the insurgency flared in late 2004. Despite having some of the lowest living standards in Pakistain, the region has the richest supply of natural resources.

Former commissioner sent home over `links` with militants
[Dawn] The government has sent home a former commissioner of Malakand division on forced retirement for reportedly having connections with beturbanned goons.

"Syed Mohammad Javed, a grade 21 officer from District Management Group, has been retired from civil service prematurely through a notification issued by the establishment division," official sources told Dawn .

Mr Javed had been removed from the post of Malakand commissioner in April 2009 just days before military launched operation Rah-i-Rast in Swat
...a valley and an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistain, located 99 mi from Islamabad. It is inhabited mostly by Pashto speakers. The place has gone steadily downhill since the days when Babe Ruth was the Sultan of Swat...
against beturbanned goons associated to Maulvi Fazalullah.

He was made officer on special duty (OSD) for having links with some beturbanned goon commanders.

The government initiated an inquiry against the officer and it had recommended his immediate removal from service. On the basis of inquiry report, however, the prime minister, being the competent authority, had sent him on forced retirement before reaching the age of superannuation instead of dismissal, the sources added.

The premature retirement of a senior civil officer has appeared to be a major action against civil servants for reported links with beturbanned goons so far.

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
government had decided to take disciplinary action against over a hundred of low-ranking officials of different departments in Swat region for reportedly facilitating beturbanned goons.

In line with a cabinet decision, the home and tribal affairs department of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government was assigned the task to investigate the cases and the respective district coordination officers (DCOs) were asked to proceed cases against officials, found guilty of charges.

Sources, however, said that proceedings against majority of those officials were still in progress despite the lapse of almost one and half year.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Senate, Odius Sepulcher called for war against the Visigoths...
the provincial government has ordered transfers and postings of several officers with immediate effect.

A notification issued by establishment and administration department (E&AD) said Fazle Rehmani was posted as chairman of Tanzim Lissail-i-Wal Mahroom, replacing Amjad Shahid Afridi, who was directed to report to the E&AD.

Similarly, Syed Raza Shah, associate professor of statistics, GPCS Charsadda has been transferred and posted as chief planning officer at higher education department. Israr Khan, deputy secretary II of higher education department has been posted as deputy secretary (Universities) at the same department. Zahoorul Haq has been posted as deputy secretary II at higher education department.

Moreover, Nasir Saleem, deputy secretary at higher education department has been directed to report to E&AD.

Five held in Shahbaz Taseer kidnap case
[Dawn] Personnel of a sensitive agency and the Lahore police have picked up five people for questioning after getting cell phone data of Shahbaz Taseer, who was kidnapped by unidentified people near his company's head office in Gulberg on Friday, Dawn learnt on Saturday.

However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
police teams working on the case failed to find any clue to Mr Shahbaz.

A couple of senior coppers said police were looking into the case from all aspects and working on different leads, however, the current pace of investigation and the information gathered from multiple people could not be shared with the media because of the sensitivity of the matter as it could hurt the investigation.

Police sources told Dawn that after tracing the latest calls from the cell phones of Mr Shahbaz, police jugged three people and personnel of an intelligence agency picked two others and took them to unidentified locations.

They said one of the locked away men communicated with Mr Shahbaz when the latter was leaving his Cavalry Ground residence for Gulberg in the morning.

The sources said all the five locked away men knew Mr Shahbaz very well and at the time of his departure from home somebody knew that he was leaving without a police escort.

They further said in light of the investigation and statements obtained from the family members, friends and company staff of Mr Shahbaz, it was strongly suspected that the kidnapping was the part of a business-related dispute.

A police officer, who is associated with the investigation, told Dawn that police were also considering the aspect of kidnapping for ransom, but the family had yet to be contacted by the kidnappers.

He claimed that the family of Mr Shahbaz neither told the Sherlocks about any business or property disputes nor mentioned any threats received from krazed killers.

He said the data of Mr Shahbaz's both cell phones had been collected to find out his recent conversations, adding the report of multiple fingerprints collected from the victim's sports car and dispatched to Nadra for matching would be received by police shortly.

Police investigation in light of the CCTV footages showed that Mr Shahbaz was kidnapped in a white-colour Parado, rather in black one.

Meanwhile,
...back at the scene of the crime, Lieutenant Queeg had an idea: there was a simple way to tell whether Manetti had been the triggerman -- just look at his shoes!...
coppers deployed on all important city roads and entry and exit points kept checking the suspected vehicles.

Police kept conducting search operations the whole day and several arrests were made.

Police also recorded statements of two Elite Police Force officials who were deputed with Mr Shahbaz.

Capital City Police Officer Malik Ahmed Raza told a news channel that it seemed that Shahbaz Taseer was being kept in Lahore by the kidnappers and that police were pulling out the data from the call logs of his phones.

Iraq
29 dead in suicide bomb attack in Iraq mosque: Officials
[Times of India] A jacket wallah went kaboom!" inside Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
's largest Sunni mosque Sunday night, killing 29 people during prayers, a shocking strike on a place of worship similar to the one that brought Iraq to the brink of civil war five years ago.

Iraqi security officials said parliament politician Khalid al-Fahdawi, a Sunni, was among the dead in the 9:40 p.m attack.

Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, a front man for Storied Baghdad's military operations command, confirmed the bombing happened inside the Um al-Qura mosque during prayers in the western Storied Baghdad neighborhood of al-Jamiaah. The blue-domed building is the largest Sunni mosque in Storied Baghdad.

Two security officials and medics at two Storied Baghdad hospitals put the casualty toll at 29 dead and 38 maimed. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Al-Moussawi put the corpse count at only six and said there was no significant damage to the mosque. Conflicting corpse counts are common immediately after attacks in Iraq.

In a statement early Monday, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki called on Iraqis to stand strong against gun-hung tough guys and "pursue them wherever they are."

"Solidarity and unity, and standing as one line behind the army and the police, are the only way to eliminate this danger, which does not differentiate between the Iraqis and targets all of us," al-Maliki said.

No group immediately grabbed credit for Sunday's bombing, but suicide kabooms generally are a hallmark of al-Qaeda, which is dominated by Sunnis. Intelligence officials have speculated that al-Qaeda will do almost anything to re-ignite sectarian violence, but the group recently had focused on attacking Iraqi security forces and the government to prove how unstable Iraq remains.

"I heard something like a very severe wind storm, with smoke and darkness, and shots by the guards," said a shaken Mohammad Mustafa, who was inside the mosque and was hit in the hand by shrapnel.

"How could this occur?" he said. "Is al-Qaeda able to carry out their acts against worshippers? How did this breach happen?"

That the bomber detonated his explosives vest inside the mosque is particularly alarming, as it is reminiscent of a 2006 attack on a Shiite shrine in the Sunni city of Samarra that fueled widespread sectarian violence and nearly ignited a nationwide civil war. In that strike, Sunni gunnies planted bombs around the Samarra shrine, destroying its signature gold dome and badly damaging the rest of the structure.

The attack hit Sunnis who were praying in a special service during the holy Mohammedan month of Ramadan, which ends Tuesday. It demonstrates anew that security measures to protect Iraqis as U.S. forces prepare to leave remain riddled with gaps, and shows the extent to which gunnies want to extend violence even as the eight-year- U.S. presence winds down.

The mosque's security is provided by the government-supported Sunni Endowment, and al-Moussawi raised the possibility that the bomber had inside help.

"For sure there must have been someone inside the mosque who helped the bomber," al-Moussawi said. "It must have been someone who is protecting the mosque."

Sheik Ahmed Abdul Gafur al-Samarraie, the head of Sunni Endowment, agreed that was a possibility and said the group would investigate how the bomber got inside the mosque, where an estimated 200 people were praying. He said this is the first time such a security breach had occurred, and said guards did not suspect the bomber because he had a broken hand that was bandaged.

Al-Samarraie said the bomber went kaboom! just a few feet (meters) from him, and called himself the likely target. He blamed al-Qaeda.

"Those people are infidels and unbelievers, and their criminal acts will never deflect us from our unity," al-Samarraie told Iraqi state TV. "We will remain as unified Iraqis."

He described "a deep sorrow for the murder of a child who was praying today. The blast tore his body to pieces: his legs in one place and a hand in another."

Al-Fahdawi, the Sunni politician, was targeted twice by al-Qaeda, in 2004 and 2005, when he was the head of Sunni Endowment in Anbar province.

The strike happened hours after the U.N.'s outgoing top diplomat in Iraq said the government in Storied Baghdad must determine whether its security forces are strong enough to thwart violence before requiring U.S. troops to leave at the end of the year.

In his last interview after two years in Storied Baghdad, U.N. envoy Ad Melkert said Iraqi security forces have made "clear improvements" but declined to say if he thinks they are ready to protect the country without help from the American military.

"It's up to the government, really, to assess if it is enough to deal with the risks that are still around," Melkert said in a wide-ranging interview with The News Agency that Dare Not be Named on the eve of his departure Monday.

"Obviously, security remains a very important issue."

8 injured in terror attack outside south Tel Aviv nightclub
Eight people were injured in south Tel Aviv early Monday morning, when a terrorist from the West Bank carjacked a taxi and rammed it into a police road block protecting a Tel Aviv nightclub, before going on a stabbing spree.

Police said the terrorist, a 20-year-old Nablus resident, entered a taxi near the beginning of Salameh Street, and hijacked the vehicle, stabbing the driver in the hand. He then drove for approximately a kilometer down Salameh Street towards the Haoman 17 nightclub, which was filled with high school children at an end-of-summer party. At the time of the attack, almost all of the teenagers were inside the club.

Southeast Asia
Man gunned down; cops hunt bombers in southern Thailand
A man was gunned down in Yala province yesterday morning as security forces hunted the suspected terrorists insurgents behind a bomb attack that killed five defense volunteers in Narathiwat province on Friday.

Zukran E-tae, 24, was shot by an unknown number of gunmen as he rode a motorcycle down a local road in Raman district.

In Narathiwat, two security officers conducted a raid on a mountain where five defense volunteers were killed and another wounded in an attack on Friday. A combined police-military force of about 50 officers along with sniffer dogs conducted a search on a two-kilometer section of the mountain. A pre-dawn raid was also carried out, but none of the individuals sought in connection to Friday's attack were apprehended.

The group of suspected insurgents believed to have been behind the attack has 10 members who have been involved in several earlier violent incidents. They are believed to be members of the Runda Kumpulan Kecil insurgent movement in Raman.

Landmine kills rubber plantation owner

A man was killed in his rubber plantation in Pattani province yesterday when he stepped on one of three mines believed to have been planted by terrorists insurgents. Im Sichotiyakun, 66, was killed instantly in the explosion. His wife, standing nearby, narrowly escaped the blast.

The attack was reported to Panare district police around 6 a.m. A bomb disposal squad was called in to clear the scene before another team of security officers moved in, to check for more mines. The squad found two more about three meters away.

They believe the three bombs were buried at the rubber plantation by terrorists insurgents to detonate them as authorities inspected the scene.

In neighbouring Yala province, a sand suction boat was set ablaze in the early hours of yesterday in Muang district. People living near where the boat was stationed were afraid to extinguish the fire, fearing it was a trap.

In Narathiwat, two men and two women were injured as two karaoke bars were sprayed with gunfire on Saturday night. The gunman arrived on the back of a motorcycle and fired an AK-47. The gunman also dropped a hand grenade before fleeing, which later proved to be fake.

The chief of the Sukhirin district police said local terrorists insurgents had previously issued threats they would increase attacks during Ramadan and the shootings at the two karaoke bars are believed to be related to this threat.

Abu Sayyaf frees 2 kidnap victims in Philippines
[Straits Times] Police in the southern Philippines say Mohammedan hard boyz have freed two traders from a week of jungle captivity after a ransom was paid.

Police say the Abu Sayyaf
...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder...
gunnies freed the two in a village in mountainous Patikul town in Sulu province on Sunday near where the hard boyz killed seven marines in a July 28 clash. Two of the marines had their heads chopped off, prompting a new military crackdown on the small but brutal Al-Qaeda-linked group.

Police say relatives paid US$2,400 (S$2,900) to secure the release of the Filipino traders. They were snatched on Aug 21 as they were returning home after selling clothes in a marine camp.

The Abu Sayyaf still holds two Americans of Filipino descent, a Filipino midwife, an Indian, a Malaysian and a Japanese who converted to Islam.

Syrian security forces surround town of Rastan
Syrian tanks and armored vehicles have surrounded the town of Rastan, north of Homs, which has been the site of anti-regime protests, activists say. Residents reported heavy machine gun fire by security forces at the entrance to the town.

"The tanks deployed at both banks of the highway, which remained open, and fired long bursts from their machine guns at Rastan," one resident said by phone.

Unconfirmed reports say that the latest move was prompted by defections among Syrian troops in the area, the agency reports.

Iranian gets death sentence for scientist's murder
TEHRAN: An Iranian accused of assassinating a scientist on behalf of Israel has been sentenced to death, Iran's official news agency IRNA reported on Sunday.

Majid Jamali-Fashi had pleaded guilty to murdering Massoud Ali-Mohammadi in January 2010, the first of several attacks on scientists which Iran said were the work of enemies that wished to stop it developing nuclear technology.
Majid didn't work for us. Our guy was someone named Mahmoud...
The prosecution said Jamali-Fashi had traveled to Israel to receive training from the Mossad intelligence agency, and had been paid $120,000 for the assassination.
They know that how...
IRNA quoted a judiciary spokesman as saying he had been condemned to death for "waging war against God" and being "corrupt on Earth," both capital offenses under Iran's strict form of Islamic law.

Although IRNA described Ali-Mohammadi as a nuclear scientist, a spokesman for Iran's Atomic Energy Organization said in the days after his death that he had not played a role in the activities of the organization.
He was .. some other nuclear scientist...
An Iranian opposition website said at the time that Ali-Mohammadi was an opposition supporter who had backed moderate candidate Mirhossein Mousavi in the disputed June 2009 presidential election, suggesting there may be other possible motives for his murder.

Eleven months after the bomb attack that killed Ali-Mohammadi as he set off to work, two other scientists were targeted.

Majid Shahriyari, who authorities said had a role in one of Iran's biggest nuclear projects, was killed but Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani survived and has since been appointed head of the Iranian nuclear organization.
"Rats. Missed him, David."
"Try again, Avie. We only need to be lucky once."

Syria Forbids 3 Opposition Figures from Traveling to Lebanon
[An Nahar] Syrian authorities pursuing a crackdown against President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

's critics banned three prominent opposition figures from leaving the country Sunday.

Michel Kilo, Loay Hussein and Fayez Sara were on their way to neighboring Leb to take part in a televised panel discussion when they were told by Syrian immigration authorities at the border that they were prohibited from leaving out of concern for their safety in Leb.

Hussein denounced what he called an attempt to keep them from speaking on television. The debate was to be aired by the U.S.-funded Al-Hurra television.

"This decision negates all talk about transparency and reforms," said Sara. "It is unjustified and illegal," he added.

Syria's Assad to implement media reform as protesters vow to continue struggle
[Haaretz] Syrian President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators. Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor...
issued on Sunday a decree to prohibit the imprisonment of journalists and to allow wider access to information.

"All media is independent and its freedom should not be restricted except in accordance with the provisions of the constitution and the law," said the decree, carried by the official SANA news agency.

The decree also ensured the right to access and make use of information.

However,
the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits...
the decree bans journalists from publishing "any content that would prejudice the national unity and security" or any material that would insult religious beliefs or incite sectarian problems. It also banned any material related to the armed forces.

An independent national media council will also be created.

It was the latest in a series of reforms promised by Assad to quell anti-government protests. Earlier this month, decrees on the formation of political parties and general elections were passed.

However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
the move came to late impress Turkey, a regional power broker, whose President, Abduallah Gul, said Sunday that his country had lost faith in Syria and Assad.

"Actually (the situation in Syria) reached a level that everything is too little, too late. We lost our confidence," Gul told the Anatolia news agency in an interview.
