Drone strikes and covert operations have weakened Afghanistan's al-Qaeda network to the extent a speedier than planned withdrawal of US troops would be justified, according to officials in the Obama administration.
Senior officials who appeared to support a faster exit plan told the New York Times that 20 of al-Qaeda's 30 prominent leaders in the region had been killed in the past 18 months.
During the May 2 raid in Pakistan that killed Osama bin Laden, the US seized intelligence materials at the al-Qaeda leader's compound which showed that his lieutenants were too afraid for their lives to plan overseas terror attacks.
An official said that the description of Pakistan's tribal areas as a "safe haven" was now a misnomer. Mr Obama has doubled the rate of drone attacks in Pakistan's autonomous areas, adding to tensions with Islamabad but reaping deadly results against al-Qaeda.
Given that one of his major justifications for continuing the war in Afghanistan has been to "disrupt, dismantle and defeat" al-Qaeda, many of his senior officials are arguing that he now has the latitude to bring home US troops at a faster rate than anticipated.
With growing concern in the United States about the duration and cost of the war, Mr Obama is under mounting pressure to reduce the US military presence.

If they regrow we can return. Only with the not nice military. We should be real clear about that before we leave. The world will be able to get along fine, in fact lots better, without Afghanistan. Or Pakistan for that matter. Behave or be gone.
Do not assume we'll have anything to return with. They're going to gut defense (one of the very basics in the Federalist Papers justifying a national government) instead of the two major revenue sucking black holes of socialist entitlements. That doesn't include interest that will have to be paid to even get loans via Treasury bonds.

Leaving really isn't an option in the foreseeable future.
What we are looking at is like Vietnam in reverse. That is, imagine if the roles of Vietnam and Cambodia were reversed? The US Military is in Cambodia with the NVA sending an endless supply of fighters across the border to attack us and the Cambodian government.
Pakistan has half the population (177m) of the United States, yet the government only controls part of the country. The other enclaves are full of madrassas that train an endless supply of new fighters.
If the US pulls out, the government of Afghanistan will fall, probably within a year or two, and Pakistan will again start exporting terrorists by the thousand.
In that scenario, the only sane thing to do, which they wouldn't, would be for all of Europe and the Americas to prohibit all emigration from Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The issue isn't Al Qaeda, and hasn't been for a long time. The Siamese twin issues are the Pakistan's war against America in Afganistan, and the war of the ISI's pet jihadi groups against India and the West. If we 'declare victory and go home' without dealing with those problems, those problems will explode like an infection merely suppressed by antibiotics.
And, so long as everyone's attention is focussed on Afghanistan, the ongoing hunt on the far side of the border is getting precisely the lack of attention desired, just as on the Afghan side nobody notices what Special Forces are accomplishing the background while in the foreground the regular troops are doing their thing -- rather successfully, by recent accounts, might I add.

[Tolo News] Afghan House of Representatives on Saturday said the government along with High Peace Council is seeking to include the Taliban in the cabinet.
Not that they have much choice, given the U.S. is independently talking peace with the Taliban.
Some parliamentarians criticised the government saying President Karzai is waiting for the talks with the Taliban to take place and then to introduce the remaining ministers for vote of confidence to the house.
Legislators warned the government would only respond it parliament applies pressure to introduce the remaining ministers.
Parliamentarians say they would continue protesting the government till ministers are not sent to the house for vote of confidence.
"Let's come to the main point why the remaining ministers are not introduced? It might be because talks are in progress between peace council and the Taliban and the Taliban have their own demands concerning the cabinet ministers," Abdul Zaher Qadir, an Afghan MP, said.
Baktash Seyawash representing Kabul in the house said: "We are all committed to our constitution and there should be a way to take action toward anyone who is postponing the implementation of our constitution."
"After going through the vote of confidence a candidate minister becomes a legitimate minister," another member of parliament, Sherwali Wardak, said.
Now that years have passed since Karzai's second term as president, a number of ministries are run by acting ministers in what is seen as the pivotal flaw in Karzai's administration.

If the desired end state of this "Good War" is a stable and peaceful, albeit islamofascistic Afghanistan ruled by the Taliban then why start this war in the first place? In 2001 Afghanistan was all of the above.
International organisations on Saturday called for a political process to end the conflict in Libya, where the government hit out at NATO's air war.
The Libyan regime headed by Moamer Kadhafi also dismissed rebel denials that the two sides have held talks.
Just after midnight on Sunday (2200 GMT Saturday) a loud explosion was heard in the Libyan capital.
Authorities took journalists to Tripoli's residential district of Arada where they were shown two bodies, said to have been victims of a NATO bombing raid. The reporters also saw four damaged houses.
World organisations including the United Nations, European Union and Arab League met in Cairo to discuss Libya and stressed the need for a political solution there.
They issued a statement in Arabic underlining the importance of "accelerating the launch of a political process that responds to the legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people."
EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton attended the meeting along with outgoing Arab League chief Amr Mussa and African Union head Jean Ping, while UN chief Ban Ki-moon joined by live video link.
"Today it's been about how do we make sure that in the work we do that we offer the sort of support that will enable the Libyan people to choose the future that they want," Ashton told reporters.
Ban Ki-moon meanwhile said that the roots of a negotiating process are showing in the Libya conflict.
Following talks with top officials from the European Union, African Union and other groups, Ban stressed the need for the international community to give a "consistent message" on a political solution with Kadhafi but indicated the signs of progress.

"The plan as proposed by the king yesterday (Friday) does not respond to our demands for a true separation of powers. We will protest peacefully on Sunday against this plan," he said.
The king outlined curbs to his wide political powers in an address to the nation on Friday and pledged to build a constitutional monarchy with a democratic parliament.
The proposals, to be put to a referendum on July 1, devolve many of the king's powers to the prime minister and parliament.
They come in the wake of nationwide pro-reform demonstrations that started on February 20 -- hence the name of the movement -- inspired by other popular uprisings sweeping the Arab world.
The 47-year-old monarch, who in 1999 took over the Arab world's longest-serving dynasty, currently, holds virtually all power in the Mohammedan North African country, and he is also its top religious authority as the Commander of the Faithful.

[Yemen Post] Many Yemeni workers at the private sector have been laid off due to the month-long unrest which paralyzed trade and largely affected the national economy, alsahwa-yemen.net quoted economists as saying on Saturday.
The protests calling for the ouster of the regime also forced many businesses to close, the website said, adding that economists estimated the contracts of almost 60 per cent of the workers at the private sector were terminated.
Some companies were said to have given staffs unpaid vacations until the situation returns normal, it said.
Meantime, state employees complained of late pays and deductions from their salaries, as some public offices were said to have suspended salary rises or other funds allocated for their employees besides the main salaries.
The website cited a source at the private sector as saying that the political crisis in the country paralyzed trade and productive operations at the sector by 70 per cent.
It is worth to mention that casual market absorbs more that a million workers, most of whom have already lost their jobs due to the unrest.

Replying to a query, he said BNP will also protest against the production sharing contract (PSC) with American oil company ConocoPhillips if the PSC goes against the country's interest. The contract has been signed for oil and gas exploration from two deep-sea blocks in the Bay of Bengal.
Mirza Fakhrul asked the government to disclose the details of the PSC.

Remember, that from the leftist point of view, what matters is not success, but *improvement*.
A good example is court ordered drug treatment counseling. Such counselors are often on a strong ego trip and have deep personal control issues. They want obedience to their whims.
It has been learned that the very best thing you can do before attending such mandatory counseling is to get as much drugs into your blood as you can, prior to your first drug test. Because what the counselors want is for you to show "improvement".
So you have to continue to take lots of drugs, but taper off over time, and you will get very high marks and be released from your training quickly.
The worst possible thing you can do is to have your first test indicate that you are "clean", and have no drugs in your system. This means you cannot "improve", so you are *defying* your counselor, and they may continue to force you to attend counseling for an extended length of time, because of your *defiance*.
Now, in this case, the leftists are probably thrilled to death with the Muslims. "Last week you killed 3 women and raped 3 more. But this week, you only killed 2 and didn't rape any at all! You have shown tremendous improvement! You get top marks for integration!"
But at the same time, he is very upset with the Christian. "Last week you said your gospel does not permit homosexuals to marry. This week you are saying the exact same thing. Why are you defying me and refusing to *improve*?"

An Austrian terror suspect arrested this week was plotting to crash a plane into the German Bundestag, a report said on Saturday as officials said a German with links to the suspect was detained.
The suspect, who has been named only as Thomas al-J. and is a 25-year-old Austrian national who converted to Islam, was arrested Wednesday in his Vienna flat on suspicion of recruiting for terror training camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan and of financing a terrorist organisation -- the German Taliban Mujahideen (DTM).
Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung reported on Saturday that the suspect had been plotting to crash a plane into the German parliament in Berlin, the Bundestag, and had been training on a flight simulator.
Austria's interior ministry also said on Saturday that a German terrorism suspect had been arrested in Austria on May 31 and had links with the alleged recruiter. The 26-year-old German, originally from Berlin, is in the process of being extradited to Germany, where he is suspected of being a member of a terrorist organisation, ministry spokesman Rudolf Gollia said.
Three other suspects who were arrested at Vienna airport Wednesday apparently on their way to a terrorist training camp in Pakistan were released from custody that evening. Police said there were no grounds to detain them further.
Austria last year passed a law that foresees up to five years in prison for any person attending a terror camp abroad.

Firehoses are a reasonable alternative, but cells have to be designed so that they can be used there. This means cells that are more like they are at ADX Florence, with concrete beds and desks, a shower and toilet whose water shuts off if their drains are plugged.
In the case of Gitmo, in such cells I would include a moderately waterproof storage area for them to put their prayer rug and Koran, along with any other authorized small items.
Procedure would be to remove them from their cell, make them strip and put them in a shower room with water cycles that contained anti-louse, then soap, then rinse, then deodorizer water.
While they're in there, their clothing would be washed with deodorizer added, and their personal stuff would be removed from storage and cleaned as needed, then their cell would be hit with a de-greaser, then soap foam with bleach substitute, then rinsed into a secure drain in the floor.
Done on a weekly basis, the place would be quite pristine, excepting when they threw their urine and feces. So it is also a good idea to have an easy to clean corridor as well.

skidmark: That comment has been made for years by prison guards throughout the US. Many inmates are downright scatological, throwing their urine and feces. They also spit and openly masturbate.
In recent years, some even cut themselves enough to get a cup or two of blood to add to the mix, knowing that they have hepatitis C or HIV.

ScotchBrite, scrub brushes, bleach and disinfectant applied directly to the inmate. Scrub until raw, spray them down with the solution.
Rinse and repeat as required.

The hose is only required if the prisoner doesn't cooperate; it's their choice whether the Koran gets bathed in their filth or not. We should not take into onto ourselves to treat their "holy" book with more respect than they accord it.

If these journalists were proper muckrakers, they would have long ago set up such spooks so when they would try to brutalize someone, that they would be caught on camera, and surrounded by a small mob that would strip them naked and parade them through the streets, extracting confessions about who ordered them, before turning them over to (more) honest cops.

A terrorist outfit targeted a bank in Islamabad on June 13 because its floor tiles and their design were strikingly analogous to the sacred name, Allah, and the bank did not change them despite complaints to its management.
A bank guard was killed and four others were injured in last Mondays suicide attack on an Islamabad branch of a bank. The bank administration was cautioned by a section of the outfit that had even lodged a written complaint with Islamabads Industrial Area Police Station two years back following the direct warning to bank officials, it is reliably learnt.
Bank officials confirmed to The News on condition of anonymity that the administration received complaints about the design of the floor tiles, and that some individuals had also met the management official in this regard but neither the area police nor the bank administration took any action on the objections raised by the grdoup.
The banks president, when contacted for his comment, said: It cannot even be imagined to disgrace the holy name of Allah Almighty. He said the allegation was baseless and concocted. We are Muslims and can never think of the disrespect to the name of Creator, he added.
Head of the bank administration said that the plaza was four-storey building and the owner of the building constructed the structure but the design of the tiles was not objectionable. He said anyone could visit the building and the bank anytime.
Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Binyameen when contacted by this correspondent for comments confirmed the lodging of the complaint with the Industrial Area police and said that although the complaint was filed two years back, the police were investigating that aspect. He said that the investigators have got some concrete evidence leading to the terrorist outfit involved in the suicide attack.
Quoting evidence, Binyameen said that the attacker was not wearing suicide jacket but was carrying explosive material packed in a bag. He said that police were working on the aspect whether the suicide attacker blew the explosive material himself or some one other had exploded it by remote control.

Leader of opposition Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan's was only a subdued criticism when he opened the general debate on the budget on June 6, but two other senior PML-N members, Khwaja Mohammad Asif and Ms Tehmina Daultana, came out with strident attacks in their speeches afterwards in what seemed to be a party policy, which attracted the charge, in a statement of a June 9 corps commanders' conference, of a showing "conceptual biases" to run down the armed forces.
Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar came out with only a brief ridicule of what he called Sardar Mehtab's "drum-beat" and politicisation of the situation and, while declining to go into politics, said the government would make every effort to strengthen the country's defence, before the house rejected all 34 cut motions and approved the defence ministry's demands, including the largest of Rs495 billion for defence services.

Talking to media outside the parliament, he said the law enforcement agencies are conducting operation against undocumented Democrats, adding, the people who are living in Pakistain despite their expiry of visa have also been deported.
He urged the people to stand with national security agencies and criticism on them without any evidence is unjustified as they are fighting for the survival of the country.
He disclosed that timely reporting about 1100 cases by the agencies saved the country from faceless myrmidons activities.
Rehman Malik termed the news about deleting of Saleem Shahzad's data as totally wrong and added that a commission has been formed to probe the killing of Saleem Shahzad.
To another question, he said to maintain the law and order situation is the responsibility of the provinces. Law and order situation in Bloody Karachi was under control, he said.
"Rangers were deployed in Bloody Karachi on the request of Sindh government to assist the police force. The police strength was not enough to control the law and order situation in Sindh. It will be unfair to blame the whole Rangers personnel for an individuals action", he said.
He said during the last five month about 48 police personnel have embraced 'Shahadat' while taking action against the criminals.
He said all the checkposts in the capital have been restored and the police forces deployed at the checkposts have been directed to check people without any discrimination.
