#4  It reminded me of the story of a friend who was vacationing in Austria, and hitting the ski slopes.

He had just hopped on the lift when suddenly it stopped. He looked at the lift operator, who was pulling out a bag lunch and thermos. He had stopped the lift right on the second at his lunch break, indifferent to those riding up.

Then further up the lift, a German who was perhaps 30 feet up in the air, launched into an impressively profane rant at the operator, who just pointed at his lift hours sign, then shut his window.

My friend just hopped a foot onto the ground, but from the cafe where he got some coffee, he said he could hear the German cursing and screaming for the next half hour, until the lift started up again.

He noted that it was a textbook illustration of the difference between Austrians and Germans.

#5  At some point, that lift operator will have to deal with the German, though.

Afghanistan
ISAF captures Qods Force operative in Kandahar
Sounds like this was a specific target. And the Afghan Spec Ops unit managed to act like one and keep their mouths shut.
Coalition and Afghan special operations teams captured a Taliban commander who doubles as an Iranian Qods Force operative and helped ship weapons from Iran into Afghanistan.
Was he sent by Iran to take over, or was he a local who took on additional responsibilities?
In the initial press release, ISAF did not identify the Taliban commander as a Qods Force operative. But, in response to an inquiry by The Long War Journal, ISAF confirmed that the target of the raid was indeed a member of the Qods Force, the special operations branch of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.

This is the first recorded instance of the capture of Qods Force operative in Afghanistan. US forces in Iraq captured several senior Qods Force commanders and operatives during operations from 2006 to 2008.
So will Iran take some hikers hostage for bargaining chips?

Five Civilians Die in Helmand Gunfire
[Tolo News] A dozen people, five of them civilians, were killed Tuesday in a fire fight between Nato forces and the Taliban in the southern Helmand province, officials said

Seven cut-throats were killed in a shootout in the Sangin district, Helmand governor's office said in a statement.

Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) confirmed that five civilians were discovered dead after the exchange of fire.

"This is a tragedy. We are aware that Orcs and similar vermin purposefully stage attacks against friendly forces using innocent civilian's homes," Nato said in a statement.

The clash erupted after Taliban Orcs and similar vermin opened fire on foreign troops in the volatile district, the statement noted.

Dozens of Militants Die in Nato Offensive
[Tolo News] More than 28 Taliban fighters, including four commanders were killed on Wednesday in a joint Afghan-Nato offensive in southern Ghazni province

Provincial security officials said the beturbanned goons were targeted in the operation Sahara, a joint Afghan-Nato foray which is part of Afghan security efforts to root out beturbanned goons in their remote hideouts in the country.

The operation Sahara that is basically conducted to target and clear restive parts of Ghazni province of thugs, will last for three months, security officials said.

A top Afghan military commander, Daud Shah Wafadar, told TOLOnews that the operation has been going on for some days in different districts of Ghazni province, including the placid provincial capital, Ghazni city.

"We have killed 28 cut-throats along with their commanders in the operation so far, seven other beturbanned goons have been jugged and some arms have been siezed," he said.

Security situation in the province has improved since the operation has begun, the official said.

Man in court over links to al-Shabaab
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] A suspected member of the proscribed al-Shaabab terror militia, was charged on Wednesday over the Monday blast in Nairobi of a Uganda-bound bus.

Mr Aboud Rogo Mohamed, denied that he was a member of the al-Shabaab terror group.

Mr Mohamed is one of six suspects acquitted by the High Court over the bombing of Paradise Hotel in Kikambala, Kilifi District on November 28, 2002, which killed 15 people.

His cell phone number was found in a notebook recovered from Mr Albert Olando Mulanda who was killed in the blast on Monday.

Mr Mohamed was charged alongside Abubakar Sharif Ahmed Abubakar alias Makaburi. They denied charges of engaging in organised criminal activities by being members of Al-Shaabab.

Lawyer Mbugua Mureithi for both suspects applied to have them released on bond or cash bail but the plea was opposed by Chief Inspector Peter Ouma who said they were a security threat to the public and the State.

Mr Ouma said Mr Mohamed's phone number was "recovered from a notebook retrieved from the body of a jacket wallah at the Kampala Coach bus stage."

"Information and preliminary investigations indicate that the accused is a member of the proscribed organised criminal gang known as the al-Shaabab."

The court heard that Mr Mohamed "has been moving in and out of the country through the porous Kenya-Somali border using unofficial entry points."

Nairobi principal magistrate Grace Macharia was also told that Mr Mohamed, who was also acquitted over the attempted shooting down of an Israeli plane in Mombasa in 2008, is believed to be a trained thug.

Mr Mbugua wondered why the suspects were accused of being members of al-Shaabab yet they were not charged with terrorism. He also said there was no law barring Kenyans from travelling to Somalia.

The lawyer asked the court to ignore allegations that Mr Mohamed is a trained thug. "Where was he trained, by who and for what"?

Ms Macharia remanded the accused until Friday when their bail application will be considered.

Six Kenya MPs named in drug baron scandal
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Six Members of Parliament and a Mombasa tycoon were on Wednesday named in the House in connection with the drugs trade.

Internal Security Minister George Saitoti informed the House that MPs Ali Hassan Joho (Kisauni), William Kabogo (Juja), Harun Mwau (Kilome) and Gideon Mbuvi alias Mike Sonko (Makadara) and Mombasa tycoon Ali Punjani are being investigated for alleged drug trafficking.

MPs had demanded to know who among them was being investigated over allegations of being drug barons.

The names are in a US embassy dossier which ambassador Michael Ranneberger gave to the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (Kacc) last month.

Mr Kabogo had a dossier of his own, which he claimed also named Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa and Kamukunji MP Simon Mbugua. He also said it implicates the wife of "a very senior person in the country".

Though he tabled the document, it was not immediately accepted by Speaker Kenneth Marende, who said he would investigate its authenticity first. Mr Kabogo was adamant the report was from the American embassy.

He said Prime Minister Raila Odinga had confirmed he had the same dossier in his possession. But Mr Marende ruled the dossier would not be available to MPs until this afternoon when he will rule whether it is admissible.

Prof Saitoti could not confirm the names, saying he had not gone through the document carefully. "I have asked the police to give me information on the MPs they are investigating together with Kacc. These are the only four who have been brought to my attention," the minister said.

He said he received the report two days ago. "As far as Hon Kabogo's dossier is concerned, I have to go through it and do some cross-checking, Mr Speaker I will not shy from saying the truth," he added.

Mr Odinga said he received the documents formally from the US Ambassador, but resisted the temptation to name the MPs mentioned and left it to be dealt with by the competent authorities.

He revealed that a task-force had been set up to deal with the matter and investigations were ongoing. He said the probe will probably take two months as it would involve cross border investigations.

MPs expressed fears the investigation could be used by politicians to cover up drug trafficking. They demanded a timeline.

Lands Minister James Orengo said the matter was serious, especially since six MPs had been mentioned in connection with an issue as grave as drug trafficking. "It is also good for us to know so that we are not held as accomplices when relating with the MPs," he said.

Gichugu MP Martha Karua said it was important for the country to know whether the investigations would be done purely by police or whether the taskforce would be under the Prime Ministers' office. "If it will be under your ministry then there are doubt," she said.

Mr Kabogo and Mr Joho denied all links to drug dealing and insisted that those who had mentioned them be investigated for "peddling falsehoods". They said they welcomed thorough investigations.

Mr Joho demanded unsuccessfully that his name be removed from the list until investigations are concluded, saying the allegations against him were scandalous and meant 'to kill him politically.'

He demanded that the minister undertakes to punish to the fullest extent of the law those who named him if he is found innocent. He said he had never dealt in drugs.

Mr Wamalwa said he was shocked his name was there. "I thought my ears were not hearing right," said the Saboti MP. He asked that he be allowed to read the document and give a personal statement at the next sitting.

Arabia
Sentence in Chechen slaying slashed on waiver
[Emirates 24/7] A Dubai appeals court on Wednesday dropped the life sentences for two men convicted of murdering former Chechen warlord Sulim Yamadayev based on waiver of compensation rights by relatives of the dear departed.

The court reduced the sentence of the two men, an Iranian and a Tajik, to three years, including the 21 months they have in jail. This means they could be freed in early 2012.

In a dramatic twist to the case, Abdullah Al Madani, the defence lawyer of the Iranian man MT, who is the prime accused, submitted an attested copy of the waiver signed by the dependents of Yamadayev.

Having submitted a copy of the waiver from Yamadayev's dependents, the court had asked the lawyer to produce a copy attested by the Russian government with an Arabic translation attested as per UAE norms.

The Dubai Court of First Instance had found the men guilty of gunning down the former Chechen warlord at the parking of his home in Jumeirah Beach Residence on March 28, 2009.

The former rebel leader was living in Dubai under an alias and was protected by two bodyguards, one of whom got injured in the gunfire during the incident.

The sentence is subject to appeal in the Court of Cassation within 30 days.

Bangladesh
Hizb ut-Tahrir treasurer, 5 activists held
[Bangla Daily Star] Police last night jugged six members of banned Islamic outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir, Bangladesh, including its treasurer from the city's Uttara and recovered two petrol bombs from their possession.

The arrestees are Parvez Ahmmed of Comilla, treasurer of the banned organisation; Faisal Kabir of Mymensingh; Masud Parvez of Shariyatpur; Erfan Ahmed, of Brahmanbaria; Mahfuzur Rahman, of Laxmipur, and Maksudur Rahman of Chittagong.

Acting on a tip-off, Uttara police jugged the six from a house at section-12 of Uttara around 9:00pm and recovered two bombs and some banned publications, said Khandaker Rezaul Hasan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Uttara Police Station.

The OC said police jugged them for carrying out activities for the banned outfit and planning anti-state activities.

Two separate cases-- one for possessing explosives and another under the Anti-Terrorism Act-- were filed against them, the OC added.

The government banned Hizb ut-Tahrir on October 22, 2008.

On July 8 last year, Detective Branch of police jugged Syed Golam Maola, who introduced the religion-based party in the country, from the capital's Elephant Road. Party chief Mohiuddin Ahmed was jugged on April 20 last year from Green Road.

Maola is a professor of management department of Dhaka University (DU) and Mohiuddin is an associate professor of the Institute of Business Administration of DU.

Both Maola and Mohiuddin are accused in three cases filed with Uttara Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Three Melbourne men guilty of planning terror attack
Opening the case prosecutor Nick Robinson SC told the jury the men believed Islam was under attack from the West and that Australians and the Australian Government were oppressing innocent Muslims in Afghanistan.

The court heard when local clerics refused to provide a fatwa, or religious decree, to permit the plan, Mr Khayre went to Somalia to get one.

Mr Robinson stressed to the jury that the Islamic religion was not on trial and he said the men had committed a criminal act.

Much of the prosecution case was based on secretly recorded conversations between the men in which they discussed the plot and their attitude to the ``kaffirs'' or non-believers.

Aweys said the Black Saturday bushfires were Allah's punishment on Australians. Aweys told a person in a phone conversation with an associate in Somalia an Islamic cleric had been sentenced in Melbourne to 15 years in jail on terrorist charges and the Muslim community was upset.

"The next day fires broke out in the whole country. Allah bring them calamity," Awey said.

Fattal is heard in a conversation with his parents aid he wanted to be the best martyr on Earth and asked them to pray for him because he wanted to die for Allah's cause.

The jury heard transcripts of intercepted calls in which Mr Fattal says he would be rewarded in paradise if he sacrificed his life for Islam.

"I am trusting my cause to Allah, God the Almighty,'' he allegedly said.

Mr Fattal tells his father he wants to be: ``The best one on Earth, the best martyr on Earth. The one who is killed by the false messenger.

"Later you will hear good news about me.''

Fattal also complained of the Australian army's involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He said: "If I find a way to kill the army, I'm gonna do it."

[Pak Daily Times] The Frontier Corps (FC) jugged Jamhoori Watan Party chief Shahzain Bugti along with his 27 guards at the Buleli checkpost and recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition from his motorcade on Wednesday morning.

Shahzain was returning from Chaman, a border town with Afghanistan, after offering fateha for the late Jilani Khan, an ANP leader, when his motorcade was stopped for identification and search, which Shahzain reportedly refused.

FC personnel blocked the road and asked all of them to come out of their vehicles. Shahzain and his guards refused to come out. The FC personnel smashed the windscreen of the vehicle and dragged him out forcibly.

TV footage had also shown mistreatment to him during his arrest. However,
The infamous However...
the FC officials denied any maltreatment of Shahzain, the grandson of the late Akbar Bugti.

According to an FC front man, the weapons and ammunition recovered from the vehicles included two 14.5 mm anti-aircraft, 14 kaboom boxes of anti-aircraft guns, 42,000 rounds, landmines, two grenade launchers, 43 Kalashnikovs and 16 illegal vehicles.

Shahzain described the arrest as a conspiracy of the security agencies to stop him from going back to Dera Bugti from where he announced a long march on January 28.

Later, talking to news hounds, inspector general of FC Balochistan, Major General Ubaidullah Khan, said there was secret information about smuggling of arms. Shahzain was given three hours to justify carrying weapons but he tried to flee. The security personnel had no choice but to arrest him, he claimed.

He said he would be handed over to the police.

Inspector general of Balochistan Police Malik, Muhammad Iqbal, who also accompanied the FC IG, said Interior Minister Rehman Malik was closely monitoring the situation and had ordered formation of a joint investigation team comprising DIG police, ISI and IB officials to probe the matter.

Two police officers charged in Bhutto assassination case
(KUNA) -- A Pakistani court Wednesday cancelled the interim bail of two former police officers and ordered their arrest in a case pleaded by Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

Former City Police Officer (CPO) Saud Aziz and Superintendent Police (SP) Rawal Town Khurram Shahzad were arrested after an Anti-Terrorist Court (ATC) cancelled their interim bail.

The FIA had pleaded before the court that Saud Aziz and Khurram Shahzad were facing serious allegations and requested for cancellation of their interim bail. The court granted the FIA plea and cancelled bails of both police officers, who were immediately arrested at the court orders.

"Both of the police officers have been arrested," said prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali while talking to media. The two former police officials have been nominated for involvement in the murder of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairperson and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. They were accused of ordering the assassination scene hosed down so that to destroy vital evidences.

Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in December 2007 in a gun and suicide attack after she was leaving an election campaign in Rawalpindi.

Massive explosions rock Gaza, cause injuries
(KUNA) -- Paleostinian civilians were maimed Wednesday when massive kabooms rocked Gazoo.

Local radio stations reported that blasts occurred in a house in Sheikh Ridhwan neighborhood, in north Gazoo.
There was a reason for Mama Ridhwan's rule about only smoking in the back garden, but Cousin Abdullah thought he was special.
Ambulances were immediately sent to control the fire at the severely damaged house, eye-witnesses said, adding that police circling the location started investigating the incident.

It was unknown whether the kabooms were caused by Israeli raids or not.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
Paleostinian properties and fishing boats were damaged by Israeli fire, local sources reported.

Israeli military boats target fishermen on semi-daily basis, claiming that Paleostinians passed the three-mile limit set.

On Friday, a young Paleostinian fisherman was killed after Israeli fire sent his boat to the bottom of Rafah's water, south of Gazoo.

Aren't they supposed to move in more of a radial direction towards the house?

Oh right, I forgot. Like popcorn, you have to wait until the time between secondary explosions dies down to about ten minutes or so.

Southeast Asia
Two rangers gunned down in southern Thailand
Suspected Islamic terrorists militants gunned down two rangers in southern Thailand on Thursday as the country revealed plans to withdraw a state of emergency in part of the region.

Four assailants disguised as Muslim women
or black ghosts or giant living trash bags
shot the paramilitary rangers dead as they were driving home from night duty in Narathiwat province. Two local women were injured by stray bullets in the incident and police said the attackers stole the rangers' guns.

This came as Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva announced plans to end emergency rule in three provinces after almost seven years of unrest.
I don't know the reason he wants to lift emergency rule, but I haven't noticed a slowdown in the number of attacks in the south.
'We are preparing to lift the state of emergency,' said Mr Abhisit, adding that in one district of Pattani province they were likely to be lifted 'before New Year' as a test case.

Jundallah says will execute abducted Iranian nuclear scientist
[Debka] - Sunni Baluchi underground Jund Allah announced Wednesday, Dec. 22, that it intends to execute Amir Hossein Shirani, a senior Iranian nuclear scientist, whom the organization abducted on Oct. 8 at the entrance of the secret Iranian nuclear facility in Isfahan, 340 kilometers south of Tehran.

If Jund Allah carries out its decision, Amir Shirani will become the first senior Iranian nuclear expert to be captured and put to death by a terrorist organization.

He will also be the second nuclear scientist Iran has lost in a single month: On Nov. 29, unknown killers assassinated Dr. Majid Shahriari, head of the program combating the Stuxnet malworm invading Iran's computers.

The Jund Allah spokesman Abdel Raouf Rigi made this announcement Wednesday: "We will execute this man after the Iranian authorities refused to respond to our demands."

Those demands, counter-terror sources report, were for the release of 200 jailed individuals defined as "Iranian Baluchi politicians" and Jundallah members. He denied that the 11 men Iran hanged Monday, Dec. 20, were members of Jund Allah, as claimed by Tehran.

#2  Al Qaeda is funded by Saudi power seekers who want to take over from the al-Saud clan. I wouldn't be surprised if Jundallah is funded by the Saudi government itself, given that its primary interest is in preventing the Iranian nuclear program from coming to fruition or at worst slowing it down. Rebels, whether secessionists or not, don't normally go after nuclear scientists.

Iran Sunni militant group to kill hostage: report
[Dawn] A front man for Iran's armed Sunni cut-thoat group says it will kill an kidnapped Iranian after authorities rejected an offer to swap the hostage for 200 of the group's imprisoned members.

Jundallah front man Abdel Raouf Rigi is quoted Wednesday by the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat daily as saying the hostage would be killed "very soon."

The man was identified as a former worker at an Iranian nuclear facility who was kidnapped two months ago.

Iran on Monday hanged 11 men who authorities said were members of Jundallah, which has long waged an insurgency in the remote Sistan-Baluchistan province.

The executions took place after Jundallah grabbed credit for an attack earlier this month on Shia worshippers that killed 39 people.
