Conservatives are planning to propose an amendment to the Constitution at some time in the next few weeks aimed at allowing states to repeal legislation without the approval of Washington.
The proposal is dubbed the Repeal Amendment.
The Repeal Amendment calls for allowing states to band together to repeal, or overturn, federal legislation. As it is written now, if approved and ratified, two-thirds of states legislatures would need to vote in favor of a repeal.
The proposed amendment reads: Any provision of law or regulation of the United States may be repealed by the several states, and such repeal shall be effective when the legislatures of two-thirds of the several states approve resolutions for this purpose that particularly describe the same provision or provisions of law or regulation to be repealed.
According to The Repeal Amendment, a nonprofit pushing the idea forward, those in favor of the Constitutional change at the federal level include House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., and Congressman Rob Bishop, R-Utah, while many more state-level government officials are on board.
Champions of the Repeal Amendment at state levels include Virginias Attorney General, Tea Party favorite Ken Cuccinelli, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos, Utah House Speaker David Clark, South Carolina House Speaker Bobby Harrell, Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma, Texas House Speaker Joe Straus and members from state governments in New Jersey, Minnesota and Georgia.
Despite a long and deep recession, the collective personal wealth of congressional members increased by more than 16 percent between 2008 and 2009, according to a study released Wednesday by the Center for Responsive Politics. "We feel your pain"
The study also indicates that a significant number of members owned shares of major players in the health-care and financial-services sectors, which were the subject of major reform legislation during the period. *ahem*
The findings-based on federal financial disclosure data released earlier this year-paint a wealthy bunch in Congress, with more than half of all members-261-were millionaires. "We represent the little sheeple people"
About one in five of those had average calculated wealth in 2009 of at least $10 million. Eight of the 261 were in the $100 million-plus range.

And of course there were others, like Congressman Charlie Rangel, who have simply forgotten to pay taxes over the years. Not paying taxes must surely help increase wealth as well.

I read (@ AOSHQ) that there was "new information" which could mean additional charges

"As a result, the adjudicatory subcommittee no longer has jurisdiction over this matter and the adjudicatory hearing previously scheduled for November 29, 2010 will not be held."
Sooo Maxine...who do you suppose now has "jurisdiction over this matter"? I wouldn't be so smug. They just might be talking about the DoJ.

I dunno, DepotGuy. If Holder is leading the prosecution, I doubt the prosecution will lead anywhere useful, just like the Black Panthers investigation did.

My guess is that unlike Rangel, she showed her real snarl and teeth and scared the committee enough that Dem House Leadership decided to fold, send this back to the committe on some grounds, and let the Repub House leadership be seen as prosecuting her, with all the race-baiting charges she will throw.
If there are real criminal charges, and Holder's DOJ is involved, look for the very long stall......

Chollie is your garden-variety, genial corrupt Northeastern politician, not all that far to the left and not many political allies. "Kerosene Maxine", on the other hand, is a full blown nasty socialist with plenty of political firepower and support from the media.
It'll be up to the 112th Congress, which convenes in January, and a new ethics committee.
