Not really. Special Forces have been using them for at least two decades. Give 'em credit for having enough brains to make the units relatively quiet.

NATO Arrests Afghan Provincial Official
[Tolo News] NATO and Afghan forces jugged the Deputy Directorate of Agriculture of Afghanistan's Central Pashtun-infested Logar province on Sunday

Afghan cops, along with NATO forces jugged Eng. Zalmai Ahadyar, the Deputy Directorate of Agriculture of Logar in the province's Charkh district at 5 pm on Sunday without any charges, Din Mohammad Darwish, a front man for the governor of Logar told TOLOnews.

Mr Ahadyar has already spent 6 months in Bagram for charges of anti-government activities and plotting plans against foreign forces in Afghanistan.

Ahadyar has been working as the Deputy Directorate of Agriculture in Logar province in the past nine years.

Security has deteriorated in Logar province recently and foreign forces' convoys have often come under insurgency attacks in the past few months, in which gunnies have suffered most casualties.

NATO has previously jugged a number of Afghan local officials on charges of conspiring against foreign forces and helping the Taliban jihad boys.

Afghan and coalition forces have escalated their counter-insurgency operations to wipe out Taliban gunnies in the country's volatile regions, in which gunnies have suffered heavy casualties.

Somali pirates seize ship with 20 Filipino crew
[Arab News] Somali pirates have seized a Japanese-owned fat merchantman with 20 Filipino crew members onboard, the European Union Naval Force said Monday.

The owners of the Panama-flagged Izumi received an automatically released distress signal Sunday afternoon, indicating that the vessel was likely under attack by pirates, said E.U. Naval Force front man Lt. Col. Per Klingvall.

A Danish warship was sent to investigate and made contact with the Izumi's captain early Monday. He reported that the ship was under pirate control. It is now traveling to Somalia and is around 274 kilometers south of the Somali capital of Mogadishu.

A French warship is monitoring the situation as the Izumi heads toward Somalia, said Klingvall.

The Izumi is operated by NYK-Hinode Line, Ltd and was traveling between Singapore and Mombasa, said Yuki Shimoda, an official at Japan's Transport Ministry. It was not immediately known what cargo the 14,152-ton Izumi was carrying.

Somali pirates now hold 18 ships and 389 crew. The sailors are not usually hurt or killed but can be held for months while their captors negotiate a multimillion-dollar ransom.

Somalia has been a failed state for nearly 20 years and the cash from piracy is one of the few ways its inhabitants can make money. The lion's share of the loot is usually split between financiers, negotiators, and local militias.

The gunnies who go out to sea in tiny skiffs and guard the captive ships also get a cut, usually between $10,000 and $15,000 each.

Arabia
Al-Qaeda renews attacks in Yemen
[Arab News] A security official who featured on an Al-Qaeda hit list of coppers to be killed was bumped off by two attackers on a cycle of violence in a south Yemen town, an official said on Monday.

One of the attackers drove the cycle of violence while the other shot the criminal investigations officer, Ghazi Al-Samawi, the official said.

The attack took place Sunday night in the town of Zinjibar in Abyan province.

Witnesses said the attackers yelled "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest) as they carried out the killing and then sped off.

Samawi featured on an Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) list of 55 coppers to be targeted for killing. AQAP on Saturday grabbed credit for the September ambush of a bus carrying Yemeni intelligence agents, saying it killed 14 people.

Dubai police: Suspect in Hamas assassination arrested abroad
[Haaretz] A key suspect in the killing of a Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, operative in Dubai has been jugged abroad but details of the capture are secret, according to Dubai's police chief.

"The arrest took place in a Western country about two months ago," Lt. Gen. Dahi Khalfan Tamim said in comments published Monday in The National newspaper.

After the Jan. 19 killing of Hamas commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, one of the founders of the group's military wing, Dubai police requested international help in trying to track down suspects in the slaying.

Authorities in the Emirates say a hit squad involving more than 30 members - many of whom had traveled to Dubai on fraudulent passports and were captured on security cameras in the Gulf state - was responsible for the killing, which took place at an airport hotel.

Tamim has repeatedly accused Israel's Mossad spy agency of orchestrating the killing. Mossad has neither confirmed nor denied involvement.

In Monday's comments, Tamim said the suspect is not believed to be European.

"The suspect who was jugged played a key role in the killing, but we were informed by the ambassador ... that they did not wish to release the information," Tamim told the Abu Dhabi government-owned daily.

Al-Qaeda top commander in Yemen announces establishment of new army
(KUNA) -- Al-Qaeda's Military Chief in Yemen Qassim Al-Rimi announced Monday the establishment of an "Aden-Abyan Army" to "liberate the country of crusaders and their apostate agents," in an Internet audio tape, published in one of Al-Qaeda's website.

In the 15-minute-long tape, Al-Rimi said that they "are preparing to implement the first steps of the Aden-Abyan Army to defend the Islamic world, noting that they will "free this land of crusaders and their apostate agents."

"This army is in its early stages," he said and calling for help from jihadists and their supporters in the audio.

In the audio tape also, Al-Rimi said "snipers and explosives" had been used in recent months to target police and security forces in southern and eastern Yemen, adding that the group was "encouraged" by the success of such attacks.

Al-Rimi was among 23 people captured in February 2006 but decamped prison before being appointed as the top commander for Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Gulf, after the two Al-Qaeda branches (Saudi Arabia and Yemen) joined together.

Earlier, the US Ambassador in Yemen said Washington was committed to working with the Yemeni government in Sanaa to defeat Al-Qaeda.

Deadly twin bomb attack on Yemen sports center
[Al Arabiya] Twin kabooms rocked a sports centre in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden on Monday, killing one person and wounding at least eight people, security and medical officials said.

The kabooms came within around 10 minutes of each other in a residential district of the city, which is to host part of the 20th Gulf Football Championship due to kick off next month.

Residents said the blasts were heard more than a kilometre (more than half a mile) away.

"Two bombs exploded... at al-Wahda club in Sheikh Othman," a security force official told AFP on condition of anonymity, referring to a busy district of the city.

"The first bomb exploded within the confines of the club, wounding two people. The second came 10 minutes later outside the club and injured seven people rushing to the scene of the first blast."

Two medical sources confirmed the number of casualties, adding that a 35-year-old man caught in the second blast later died. An AFP journalist reported that a child was among the maimed.

The attack was the second in as many days in Aden, where assailants fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a police patrol on Sunday, a police official said, adding that one person was maimed.

The football competition involving Yemen, Iraq and six Gulf monarchies is to be held from November 22 to December 5 in Aden and neighboring Abyan province, which has seen an increasing number of attacks by the local arm of al-Qaeda.

Bangladesh
Outlaw killed in 'shootout'
[Bangla Daily Star] An outlaw was killed in a "shootout" between his cohorts and law enforcers at Mohiskhola village in Gangni upazila of Meherpur early yesterday.
"Sergeant Rafiq! Round up the men! The game's afoot!"
Aksed Ali, 39, son of Bakirul Islam of Arpara village in the upazila, was a member of Lal Pataka, a faction of banned outfit Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-ML), police said.
He had the secret decoder ring and everything...
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of Gangni police and
The narrative actually breaks off here. I'm guessing the Alt-G key gave out and simply refused to load the boilerplate. BanglaWord at that point saved the tale of Aksed Ali to the file containing the tale of the miscreants who were beaten to death that appears on Page 3, inserting the remainder of their story as the tail end of this one. At least I think that's what happened...
The other outlaws, however, managed to flee.
But that always happens, whether they're Purbo Banglars at a secret meeting or simple miscreants being pounded to paste by indignant locals.
Police teams from Kushtia Sadar and Islamic University rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies at about 1:00am.
"Sergeant Rafiq!"
"Sir!"
"Give Dr. Quincy a call!"
"Yes, sir. Is it urgent?"
"No, no. Finish your lunch. They'll keep."

Police recovered one foreign-made rifle, one LG, four bullets and eight bombs from the spot.
By this point we have no idea which spot they're talking about, since we've gone from Gangni upazila of Meherpur to Kushtia, which is where these things usually happen.
"All of the dead were branded as outlawed Janajuddho cadres and accused in different cases, including murders," the ASP said.
I'm so confused. They probably were, too, until they succumbed to their injuries...
Rezaul was accused in three cases, including two for murder; Robiul in four cases, including one for murder; Sirajul in five cases, including two for murder; and Sagar in two robbery cases, police said.
They had the death sentence on twelve systems, except for Sagar, who was looking at five years in clink on Tatooine...
Police launched a drive in the area to arrest other outlaws, who went into hiding, soon after the incident.
"Did you catch any, Sergeant Rafiq?"
"No, sir. I think they've gone into hiding."

Messican Falcon Lake Top Cop Head Lopped
The Mexican police dude investigating the guy who was shot while jet-skiing on a Texas/Mexican border lake, well his body was found minus the head. And coincidentally, his body-less head was located in a suitcase which someone had delivered to the Mexican military.

While Zetas don't usually need any special reason for beheading cops, I would think that this new development does lends some credence to the suggestion that the original guy's death was not a wife vs. insurance policy issue.

Chihuahua: Juarez Police Captain Accused of Murder
Google Translate

An active captain with the Juarez municipal police was arrested Monday for abuse of authority and for the murder of four members of a family in 2008, say Mexican press reports.

Captain Juan Manuel Escamilla was arrested for the 2008 murder of four members of the family of Rubio Medrano in Plaza de Acuna in Juarez.

Reports say six more arrest warrants were issued by the Chihuahua Fiscalia del Estado on six other individuals who were police station commanders, although reports do not state what the charges were.

The arrest is significant because Teto Murguia, newly installed as mayor of Juarez Sunday, was mayor of Juarez in 2008 when his former municipal police chief, Saulo Reyes-Gamboa, was charged with drug crimes in the US. Escamilla was said to have worked as in bodyguard for Chihuahua former governor Patricio Martínez and later for Reyes-Gamboa's staff.

8 policemen killed in Mexico shootout
[Iran Press TV] Eight police officers have been killed and one maimed in a shootout in the northwestern Mexican state of Sinaloa.

An official at the state attorney general's office said gunnies ambushed four police cars along a highway in the town of Navolato, the News Agency that Dare Not be Named reported on Monday.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said the gunnies beat feet after the incident and police found a vehicle several kilometers from the site they suspect belonged to the attackers.

Sinaloa is the home of a powerful drug cartel, the Sinaloa Cartel, which also operates out of the states of Baja Caliphornia, Durango, Sonora, and Chihuahua.

They are believed to be responsible for smuggling around half a metric ton of synthetic drugs into the United States each month.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon sent about 3,000 federal police and soldiers into Sinaloa in May as part of his campaign to rein in drug lords, who have run rampant in some parts of Mexico.

Europe
Germany seeks extradition of militant from US
[Dawn] German prosecutors are seeking the handover of the jihad boy whose disclosures under US interrogation in Afghanistan helped trigger Europe's terror alert.

A front man for Germany's Federal Prosecutor's Office said Monday that a request for transfer of the 36-year-old German of Afghan descent has been filed. He declined to be named in line with department policy.

Germany accuses Ahmad Wali Siddiqui, who was jugged by the US military in July in Afghanistan, of membership in a foreign terrorist organisation.

Siddiqui is believed to have been part of the Hamburg jihad boy scene that also included key September 11 plotters. German officials have said he left Germany in March 2009 to seek paramilitary training in Pakistain's lawless border region.

Probe launched into 500 missing Nato vehicles

He said that Karachi customs had cleared the vehicles after scanning.

The official said the investigation was undertaken after the Supreme Court of Pakistain had taken suo motu notice of reports about the missing vehicles. "We are optimistic that we will trace the missing vehicles and their documents," he added.

Over the past two years more than 60,000 heavy vehicles of Nato have entered Afghanistan via the Chaman border with an average of 100 vehicles a day.

Answering a question, the official said that customs officials had verified documents of 174 Nato vehicles at the Customs House in Chaman.

Frequent incidents of looting of Nato vehicles were reported last year from Killa Abdullah, Quetta, Kuchlak and other areas of Balochistan.

Local markets are awash with goods looted from Nato vehicles.

Gunmen storm Baghdad money exchange, kill 5
[Arab News] Gunmen using pistols fitted with silencers stormed a money exchange office in central Storied Baghdad on Monday, killing five people and wounding three in a brazen afternoon robbery, police officials said.

The heist came just hours after attackers wearing military uniforms raided the homes of several anti-Al-Qaeda Sunni fighters in Iraq before dawn, killing four men in an execution-style slaying.

Violence has dropped in Iraq, but criminal activity has been on the rise, with a spate of brash daylight robberies of banks, jewelers and financial institutions across the country this year. Many of the heists have been blamed on bully boys, who are said to be short on cash and seeking ways to fund their operations.

Insurgents also frequently target security forces and their allies to undermine confidence in the country's Shiite-dominated leadership.

Those killed in Monday's heist at the Al-Warka exchange in Baghdad's busy commercial area around Rashid Street included its owner, his business partner and three customers. The maimed were bystanders, police officials said.

It was not immediately clear how much cash the assailants made away with.

No one claimed Monday's heist but declarations of responsibility for robberies of smaller financial offices and jewelers' stores are rare. An Al-Qaeda front group in Iraq had said it was behind June strikes on the Central Bank, the nation's treasury, and the Trade Bank of Iraq, attacks that had claimed dozens of lives.

Four militiamen killed near Baghdad
[Iran Press TV] Disguised gunnies have attacked a town south of Storied Baghdad and killed four members of an anti-al-Qaeda local militia in an execution-style fashion.

Gunmen in military uniforms stormed the town of Yusufiyah before dawn on Monday, forced six men out of their homes and shot them, AFP quoted an Iraqi interior ministry official as saying.

Four of the men lost their lives but two survived with injuries, he further explained.

Yusufiyah, 25 kilometers (15 miles) south of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, is located in a former bastion of al-Qaeda militancy. The area was cleared after Sunni rustics joined security forces in 2008 in a bid to uproot the snuffys.

According to another Iraqi interior ministry official, all the victims were members of the Sahwa [Awakening] militia, whose members have been targeted by snuffys' acts of retaliation.

On Monday, a roadside kaboom also targeted a police convoy carrying the head of the interior ministry's criminal evidence department in eastern Baghdad.

The major general survived the attack unharmed, while his driver was killed in the incident and his bodyguard and a passerby were maimed.

#5  They are looking for a technological fix to a people problem - something you can plug into the wall vs changing the culture of an organization. Looking at the data with hindsight, Army Major Nidal Hasan was a ticking bomb waiting to go off, but all the alarms were unplugged because the people who noticed the problem were prevented from speaking up by their institution's culture. A little data mining might provide some warning indicators but unless you remove the political correctness filters, it will be pointless.

#7  This cancerous pseudo-technology crops up every now and then. I remember when they were sending software to public schools that could theoretically be used to divine "future antisocial behavior" of "at risk" students.

As you might expect, it was garbage in-garbage out.

That is, depending what the principal decided to input, he could use it to justify abusing students he didn't like, personally or socially.

I believe someone pointed out that if you wanted to, you could subtly justify punishing every red-headed kid in school, but without appearing to.

#10  But even though Cinder is overseen by top hacker Peiter “Mudge” Zatko, it doesn’t sound like Darpa knows precisely what it’s looking for.

That's the point of data mining. You are looking for patterns you didn't know existed.

Iran arrests two fake foreign journalists
[Iran Press TV] Iran's judiciary front man says Iranian forces have jugged two foreign nationals who under the guise of journalists sought to gather information on a woman convicted of adultery and murder.

The two foreigners went to the home of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani and conducted an interview with her son, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei said during a weekly press conference on Monday.

Authorities were notified by a person close to the family who became suspicious about the foreigners' visit, he said according to a report carried by Mehr news agency.

"It turned out that the two people were not journalists -- or that they had no proof for it, and had entered the country as tourists. [They] had asked Ms. Mohammadi's family ... questions," Mohseni-Ejei said.

Ashtiani, a mother of two, was found guilty of murdering her husband in collusion with another man, Isa Taheri, who had an affair with the woman.

Mohseni-Ejei said the two foreigners, whose nationality was not revealed, were introduced through "an Iranian runaway who resides" in the same country as the two men.

Lebanon arrests suspected Israeli spies
[Iran Press TV] The Lebanese security forces arrest nine people suspected of spying for Israel, the country's army has said in an official statement.

The statement said the nine suspected spies were detained over the past two months, a Press TV correspondent reported on Monday.

The interrogation process with four of the suspected spies has been completed and they have been transferred to the judicial authorities, the statement said.

The remaining five are still being interrogated by the army, it added.

Leb has stepped up efforts to disband the spy groups working for the Israeli spy agency, Mossad.

More than 100 people have been jugged on suspicion of spying for Mossad since April 2009, including members of the country's security forces and telecommunications personnel.
