A Johns Hopkins University student armed with a samurai sword killed a man who broke into the garage of his off-campus residence early Tuesday, a Baltimore police spokesman said.
According to preliminary reports, a resident of the 300 block of E. University Parkway called police about a suspicious person, department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. An off-duty officer responded about 1:20 a.m. to the area with university security, according to Guglielmi. They heard shouts and screams from a neighboring house and found the suspected burglar suffering from a nearly severed hand and lacerations to his upper body, he said.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The student told police that he heard a commotion in the house and went downstairs armed with a samurai sword, Guglielmi said. He saw the side door to the garage had been pried open and found a man inside, who lunged at the student.
Detectives were still interviewing the student and his three roommates Tuesday morning, Guglielmi said. Burglars had already stolen two laptops and a Sony PlayStation from the student's home Monday, according to Guglielmi.
Dennis O'Shea, a spokesman for Johns Hopkins, said all four residents of the house are undergraduate students at the university.
The suspected burglar, whose name was not released pending notification of next of kin, had prior convictions for breaking and entering and had just been released Saturday from a Baltimore County facility, Guglielmi said.

That reminds me, does anyone know where I can find a good samurai sword?
If you are serious about that bit, I'd advise you to avoid both ebay and movies replicas, unless you want something cheap (and relatively expensive for what it is); for swords, I don't have as many bookmarks as for knives, I actually own a couple swords, but am really not focused on that... if you are looking for a production, industrial-made japanese sword (not very fond of those myself, by the way), I think you might want to go to http://www.knifecenter.com/knifecenter/swords/index.html
Or you could go to modern kukris like Cold Steel's ones; "best" nepalese kukris are IMHo the standard gurkha issue, or the WWII model. Other good "variants" on kukris would be the Kershaw Outcast (not a kukri per se, though), but the various bolos, machetes,... come in many, many variants, some very cheap.

The sky is the limit if you want a spectacular sword. I knew a top sword maker who gave me an hour lecture on metallurgy.
Some tidbits were that samurai swords were actually slightly over-folded, so modern versions have a "less is more" technique.
The secret of Damascus steel was that they had inadvertently stumbled on a way to concentrate and integrate carbon buckyballs into their steel, but it was a random event, with only one out of several swords having enough to make them superior steel.
Advanced alloys and ceramics will give a blade better than steel in one way, but not all ways. Ceramics can be insanely sharp, but very brittle, for example. Some alloys can "heal" from injuries, but cannot develop a good edge.
There are some efforts to make carbon nanotube and diamond hybrid blades, that would be strong, flexible, and have an edge just a few molecules thick, called a "bee sting" blade, the size of an epee, but able to slice through most things easily.
PAPUA New Guinea police are hunting the leader of a sex cult who promised villagers a bumper banana harvest if they engaged in public sex.
The man and his followers fled naked into the wilderness when police tried to arrest them over the weekend, the Post Courier newspaper reported.
The newspaper said the villagers in Morobe province, about 200km north of the capital Port Moresby, had been promised their banana harvest would increase 10-fold every time they had sex in public.
It said the cult leader was wanted for a range of alleged offences over the past four months, including threatening people and illegal sexual activity.
Inspector Adam Busil said he and officers surrounded the man's hut early Saturday but he refused to come out, then made a dash for freedom with about seven naked followers.
"He used his two wives as a human shield to avoid being shot at by the policemen," Busil said.
"They were called on to surrender but they refused."
He said extra officers were being called in to track down the cultists.
A PETITE blonde knocked out a Coldstream Guard, hurled another into a disco sound deck and battered one of their wives at a dinner dance.
Martial arts instructor Ashley Wolfe - who is just 5ft 3in - went berserk when male soldiers kissed and danced with each other, pretending to be gay.
The 24-year-old Canadian, in a striking red satin dress, yelled "This should not be allowed in the British Army" - then went on a rampage, knocking over burly soldiers from the elite regiment like skittles.
Greenwich JPs issued an international arrest warrant yesterday after Wolfe failed to show for a hearing. She was found guilty in her absence of two counts of common assault.
Her attacks came when she went to a Christmas dinner dance for sergeants and officers of the Coldstream Guards at Woolwich Barracks, South East London, with her husband William, also a self-defence instructor.
The couple teach a self-defence technique - devised by William - called Modern Defendo to soldiers all over the world. Their motto is: "It's Deeds Not Words That Count".
The court heard Wolfe had been drinking heavily before confronting the larking soldiers. She first shoved Sgt Michael Fallows and stormed off.
When Sgt Damian Holland joined the group of soldiers, she went back and hurled him into the sound system before flinging him to the ground.
She then grabbed Sgt Holland around the neck, wrenched his tie and pulled him to the floor, before walking away.
Sgt Holland's wife Joanne followed her. Joanne told the court: "I asked her what was wrong. She said 'don't mess with me - I'm a Canadian boxer'. Then she just hit me on the right side of my face. The bruising went all the way down my cheek."
A brawl then erupted, during which Wolfe walked up to Sgt Fallowes and knocked him out with a SINGLE punch.
Her hubby William was attacked and had the tip of his nose bitten off.
Wolfe's claim to cops that she acted in self-defence was rejected by the court.
When not engaged in unarmed combat, Wolfe loves firing guns at a range in Raleigh, North Carolina.
After the case a source at the Coldstream Guard, who are set for Afghanistan, said: "The gay stuff was just a joke but the Canadian woman took it quite literally.
"She may only be small, but she gave our guys quite a thumping. As well as the physical injuries, there were one of two bruised egos."

Do not be fooled by petite size. I knew the skinny brown belt woman who was first to knock out a black belt man in the ring, before they prohibited women and men fighting in competition.
As a black belt, she regularly fought men who outweighed her by 30-70 pounds *and* were wearing martial arts body armor (padded boxer headgear, chest plate, arm, leg, groin, foot, and mouthpiece.) They needed that gear.
Even with that gear, her fists and feet were like getting shot by a .357 while wearing a bullet proof vest. You would still get some serious bruises.

LONDON - A group of schoolchildren who reared a lamb from birth and named it Marcus has overridden objections by parents and rights activists and voted to send the animal to slaughter.
Marcus the six-month-old lamb has now been culled, the head teacher of the primary school in Kent confirmed on Monday, after the school's council -- a 14-member group of children aged 6 to 11 -- voted 13-1 to have him killed.
The decision has provoked fury among animal-loving celebrities, animal and human rights campaigners and the parents of some of the children, and led to threats against Lydd primary school and its teachers, according to a member of staff.
Around 250 children at the school take part in a program designed to teach them about rearing and breeding animals.
The educational farm was started this year, with Marcus being hand-fed by the children. The children also look after ducks, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs.
The intention had been to buy pigs with the money raised from slaughtering Marcus, but those plans have been put on hold following the furor created by the lamb's culling. The school said the program may now have to be stopped.
"It's all up in the air," said a member of staff. "There's been so much pressure on us as a result of all this."
Despite that, the school said there had been overwhelming support among the children, the staff and most of the parents to have Marcus -- a castrated male who could not have been used for breeding -- sent to the slaughterhouse.
But opponents branded it heartless and cruel, with animal rights campaigners asking why Marcus could not have been used to teach the children about wool, and human rights campaigners worried about the emotional impact of Marcus's death on the children.
A popular talk show host offered to buy the lamb and give it sanctuary and Facebook groups sprung up to rally support to keep Marcus alive. But the children had the final say. The school defended the children's decision, calling it educational.
"When we started the farm in spring 2009, the aim was to educate the children in all aspects of farming life and everything that implies," the school said in a statement.
"The children have had a range of opportunities to discuss this issue, both in terms of the food cycle and the ethical aspect... It is important for everyone to move on from this issue, so the children can focus on their education."
[Maghrebia] A boat transporting 1.7 tonnes of cannabis was seized by Moroccan and international authorities Sunday night in the Mediterranean, AFP reported on Monday (September 14th). The boat is expected in Toulon on Tuesday, where the four people who were on board will be taken into custody. Seventeen similarly designed "fast" boats, which are favoured by drug traffickers, have been seized in the Mediterranean in the past three years.

Time to go to sleep. A first glance I thought it said "Boatload of Cannibals Seized.."
oh well....
Both bank credit and the M3 money supply in the United States have been contracting at rates comparable to the onset of the Great Depression since early summer, raising fears of a double-dip recession in 2010 and a slide into debt-deflation.
...
"There has been nothing like this in the USA since the 1930s," he said. "The rapid destruction of money balances is madness." The M3 "broad" money supply, watched as an early warning signal for the economy a year or so later, has been falling at a 5pc annual rate.
Similar concerns have been raised by David Rosenberg, chief strategist at Gluskin Sheff, who said that over the four weeks up to August 24, bank credit shrank at an "epic" 9pc annual pace, the M2 money supply shrank at 12.2pc and M1 shrank at 6.5pc. "For the first time in the post-WW2 [Second World War] era, we have deflation in credit, wages and rents and, from our lens, this is a toxic brew," he said. It is unclear why the US Federal Reserve has allowed this to occur.
More worrying is the business credit contraction that is putting the brakes on production and employment.

In any case, the Keynesians have been using MMGW logic.
That is, that a fraction of a trace gas can push around climate forces of immense scale; but in this case, that the economic micromanagement of the US economy can push around the global economic forces in the hundreds of trillions of dollars of debt.
For months now, prognosticators have suggested that this month, in mid-to late-September, this "1930 spring" is going to come to a resounding end. That we are literally just days away from catastrophic failure.
Only with luck will we make it to October 1st, and the start of the next fiscal year. But likely October will be a hell month, with November not much better.

The Federal District judge said that Bank of America [BofA] "materially lied" in shareholder communications about the $3.6 billion in bonuses paid to Merrill Lynch executives just before BofA took over Merrill last year.
The $33 million settlement "does not comport with the most elementary notions of justice and morality," the judge wrote. He focused his criticism on the fact that BofA shareholders would be the ones to bear the expense of the settlement, although they were actually the ones injured. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Now the case will go to trial, and I suspect some interesting internal communications of BofA will be subpoenaed that will come to public attention.
Yesterday Wells Fargo bank fired an executive for throwing parties at an expensive Malibu house it had taken by foreclosure, from victims of Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme no less, and at the same time refused to show the home to interested potential buyers. See here.
Neither of these issues are 'control fraud' issues which, in my opinion, are one of the primary causes of the current financial crisis. But they do amply display the contempt many banking executives have for the general public and for ethical banking and business standards.

For certain it's nothing less than a branch of the entertainment media, it's just that many of the particiants haven't figured it out yet and are just tools. "Main Stream Media" implies way more credibility than they deserve.
At least 14 women and children have been killed in a stampede to get free flour in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi, officials say. Dozens more were injured in the crush, reports say.
The flour was being handed out in a poor, congested neighbourhood of the city by a private group as part of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Pakistani TV showed distraught relatives arriving at a hospital where the injured had been taken.
Some of the victims suffocated in the stampede and others were trampled, officials said. They said an earlier death toll of 18 had been revised down.
The BBC's Arman Sabir in Karachi reports that the unexpected arrival of large numbers of people was a key cause of the tragedy. Later, crowding and congestion at the site made it difficult for ambulances and rescue workers to get through, he says.
Relatives gathered at the hospital where the dead and injured were taken
The incident took place at Khori Garden in central Karachi, near the waterfront.
The area is lined with narrow streets where wholesalers operate warehouses of wheat, grain, pulses and other such goods. During Ramadan long traffic jams are common and a profusion of vendors adds to congestion.
Many Muslims hand out food to the poor during Ramadan, the most sacred month of the Islamic calendar, which ends next week.

May his family be comforted,
although, personally I don't know they possibly could be...
Simmering tensions along the mountainous frontier with China appear to have become serious with a revelation that two jawans of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, the sentinel force along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), were injured in bullets fired from the Chinese side.
The firing in an area identified as Kerang in northern Sikkim took place a fortnight ago but has been kept under wraps. It was confirmed on Monday by a highly-placed intelligence source, who is not authorised to give information to the media. ITBP officials at its headquarters in New Delhi declined to confirm the incident.
It was the first incidents where bullets have been fired since the landmark 1996 Sino-India agreement in which both sides pledged not to open fire, no matter what the provocation, as a part of confidence-building measures.
Sources cite this as yet another instance of China's maintaining pressure on the 2.1 sq km area of `Finger Tip' in northern Sikkim. Last year, China had sent a vehicle-mounted patrol into this area, penetrating 1 km into Indian territory. The Kerang shootout prompted an unscheduled border personnel meeting on August 30.
Also last week, the entire situation along the LAC was reviewed in a war game by the Eastern Command top brass in Kolkata's Fort William, Eastern Command HQs, in the presence of Army chief General Deepak Kapoor.
Violations aren't new but have rarely involved casualties. What is alarming is the report of shooting along the LAC which has remained peaceful for decades since the Chinese invasion of 1962.
At Asaphila in Upper Subansiri Division of Arunachal Pradesh, for instance, a contingent of 22 Chinese troops had intercepted an armed Indian patrol of two policemen, three porters and five Special Service Bureau personnel in June 2003, disarmed them and returned them to the Indian Army.
In contrast, the Kerang incident could be a significant and dangerous deviation from the practice of talks before bullets.
Despite ceremonial border personnel meetings (BPMs) at Nathu La in Sikkim and Bum La and Kibithu in Arunachal, Chinese troops continue to violate the LAC with brazen regularity.
According to Army sources, People's Liberation Army patrols have been sighted crossing over the LAC six times since January this year -- four times in Upper Subansiri district in June and July, and twice in Lohit district in January. A Chinese post continues to occupy Sumdorong Chu valley since 1986.
The situation has been worsened by the fact that the border is unguarded at some places in Arunachal Pradesh, mainly due to inhospitable terrain marked by high mountains and hostile weather throughout the year. At some locations there are no field units on either side. There is no deployment of Indian forces in at least one district, the backward Kurung Kumey (Tawang's neighbour).
Such forays by Chinese troops have left the population near the LAC insecure. "Chinese patrols encroached into my district in June and July,'' said Upper Subansiri deputy commissioner H G Shalla.
Western Arunachal Pradesh MP Takam Sanjay -- whose constituency has many areas where Chinese incursions have happened -- said the local people felt unsafe. "People of Arunachal do not want to face 1962 all over again,'' he said. He has taken up with the Centre the issue of securing the border. "It seems, somewhere we have lost involvement.''
Indian troops on the LAC have even sighted Chinese grazers and fishermen crossing over and pushed them back, say sources. Bhutan, too, faces the same problem. People from Tibet cross over in search of medicinal herbs.
According to Army sources, there is no PLA build-up across the border, but what worries the Indian top brass is the definite edge the Chinese have in terms of infrastructure, particularly road communication. Because of this, they can move reinforcements to the LAC at a short notice, which is difficult for India. In Asaphila, the last road on the Indian side ends 50 km away from the LAC.
Political leaders from Arunachal, like former MP Kiren Rijiju, have been vocal against the Indian policy of not developing infrastructure on the border for fear the Chinese would use them in case of a war. He has described this as a "defensive policy''. Sanjay, however, said that with prime minister Manmohan Singh granting Rs 24,000 crore to Arunachal for infrastructure development, the situation is set to change.
One of the most important projects is the construction of the trans-Arunachal highway, connecting Tawang with Changlang district. It is learnt that the Cabinet committee on infrastructure has given approval for bidding for two sections of this highwa

Jawa (from Persian Jawan or Javān, meaning "young") refers to a young man in Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, and Punjabi. In the Indian subcontinent, it has additionally taken on the reference to an infantryman, and is used in much the same meaning as troop or soldier in English. This term is specific to all ranks below that of a Commissioned Officer, primarily used in the armed forces of India and Pakistan

Married people who commit adultery could be stoned to death under new law unanimously passed on Monday by MPs in the devoutly Muslim Indonesian province of Aceh. The law, which will come into effect in 30 days, also decrees that homosexuals could be caned and jailed for eight years. Those convicted of rape or consuming alcohol could be face up to 200 lashes of the cane meted out in public.
The 69-seat house in the semi-autonomous province voiced no reservations over the new law, an extension of the Sharia code already in force. Gambling and drinking were already banned after Aceh introduced elements of Sharia law in 2001, when it became compulsory for women to wear headscarves. Dozens of people deemed to have broken the law have been caned in public by the local Sharia police.
Aceh, the place where Islam first arrived in Indonesia from Saudi Arabia, suffered a long-running separatist insurgency that killed thousands. It only ended in 2005 in the wake of the Indian Ocean tsunami that wrought havoc on Aceh and killed as many as 160,000.
The new law imposes tough sentences and fines, to be paid in kilograms of gold, for rape and paedophilia. But the most severe article was on adultery, which orders that offending married couples can be punished by at least 100 lashes, up to the harshest punishment of being stoned to death.
The provincial government initially proposed the new law, but now opposes some of the new clauses added by parliament. But Bustanul Arifin, secretary of Aceh parliament's special committee for drafting the law, and a member of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), was unrepentant. "We feel that it is time now for people to understand the real meaning of Sharia," he said.
BELLEVILLE -- A Belleville West High School student was beaten aboard a bus on the way to school Monday, and a police spokesman said the beating could be racially motivated. Could be racially motivated?
The 17-year-old victim was white and the teen assailants were black. Police released a video of the beating, which shows the victim being punched repeatedly while other students on the bus gather to watch, some cheering. It doesn't appear that the victim did anything to provoke an attack and tried only to defend himself. Police said it all unfolded in a five-minute span.
The victim was trying to find a seat and was told by two students he could not sit next to them, police said. As he walked to the seat, someone shouted, "Beat his ass."
When he did sit down, one teen tried to push him out of his seat then began grabbing the victim's neck and punching him in the face. With each punch, some in the crowd chanted, "Boom, boom, boom."
The victim eventually returned to his seat, but another student began taunting him a few minutes later. The victim was then struck in the face.
It was unclear what, if anything, the bus driver did to stop the attack. At one point, before the second attack, a man shouts, "Sit down guys."
Students intervened to help the victim both times.
"In my estimation, it's racially motivated," said Capt. Don Sax of the Belleville Police Department. He said one reason he had formed this opinion was that many of the students, most of whom were black, yelled their support for the beating.
"There was absolutely no justification for the beating either time," Sax said.
Two teens were taken into custody; authorities will apply for charges today. Both students have been suspended, said Superintendent Greg Moats.
He also said there had been no racial problems at the school and said that he wanted to talk further with police to determine why they believe race could have been a motivator in the fight. He also said the school will do everything possible to make sure students are safe, but he wouldn't elaborate

Chris gives us Mexican press dispatches of drug and gang war violence
over three years, presented in a multi volume set intended to chronicle the death, violence and mayhem which has
dominated Mexico for six years.
Rantburg was assembled from recycled algorithms in the United States of America. No
trees were destroyed in the production of this weblog. We did hurt some, though. Sorry.
