[Iran Press TV Latest] A US foreign policy veteran warns that the US-led coalition forces are repeating the same mistakes that led to Soviet Union's failure in Afghanistan over two decades ago.
Few men know more about failure than Zbig ...
In a speech at a global strategy conference in Geneva, Zbigniew Brzezinski said the West risks replicating the Soviet Union in Afghanistan without a fundamental change in policy, the BBC reported. "In my view, we are in fact running the risk of replicating, obviously unintentionally, what happened to the Soviets," he said during the conference.
Brzezinski, a former national security adviser, said the military engagement in the war-ravaged country was reaching levels similar to the Soviet invasion in 1980s. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan began as midnight approached on December 24, 1979. The Soviet Union left Afghanistan deep in winter with intimations of panic ten years later.
On Afghanistan, however, Brzezinski recognized that there had already been a significant shift away from some of the unrealizable objectives of the George W. Bush agenda.
The veteran, who helped Barack Obama develop his own foreign policy positions during his presidential campaign, insisted further change was still needed to diffuse the crises in the conflict-torn country.
Brzezinski issued the stark warning - not just for Obama's administration, but for the West as a whole.
"We went into Afghanistan almost eight years ago, and we overthrew the Taliban with 300 soldiers," he said. "Eight years later, we are beginning to move to a level of military force which is beginning to approximate the Soviet engagement and already our top generals are saying we are not winning militarily."

Zbigniew Brzezinski is a member of a collective of supervillain wannabes, the SPECTRE-like Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). They are masters of FAIL.
Other members include the nefarious Henry Kissinger, draft-dodging Carter SecDef Harold Brown, Republican turncoat William Cohen, general purpose cutthroat and spook Richard Armitage, and Madeline Albright--who I guess plays the part of "Rosa Klebb".
Violent clashes between anti-Islam demonstrators and Muslim counter-protesters in English cities are worrying the government, with one British minister comparing the disturbances to 1930s-era fascist incitement.

Birmingham is a semi-important hub of BNC support. Were there any Football games around the same time? The Brits are a defeated country, and this a nothing more than an excuse for knocking over rubbish bins from hooligans. In the grand scheme of things this means as much as the latest fall fashions at Milan.

"television footage showed Muslim youths racing through the streets shouting "Allahu Akbar!", waving Islamic banners and throwing projectiles"
This is actually a typical responce from Muslims and not one that can be blamed on "English people stiring it up". How many times have we read that due to Muslim pressure something had to be changed or abandoned and when the muslim pressure is ignored someone non muslim is murdered or homes firebombed. Labour can cry because they've failed to act on the muslim subculture in this country.

Maybe the Bobbies need to start cracking heads wide open when this nonsense starts up. They'll get the message after a while, I'm sure.
[Al Arabiya Latest] Britain needs new policies to tackle issues that racists exploit, the communities secretary said Saturday, following ugly scenes outside a London mosque.
Riot police arrested 10 people Friday as they intervened to quell clashes outside the mosque in Harrow, northwest London, on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
About 1,000 mostly Muslim protestors, many with masks over their faces, were involved in running scuffles following a demonstration by a small anti-Islamic group.
" You need to be prepared to let people's real underlying fears and concerns come out, but to be able to address them frankly and openly "
Communities Secretary John Denham
Communities Secretary John Denham told The Guardian newspaper that there was a need for a broader strategy from government to "undercut issues that racists try to exploit."
Ministers would in the coming weeks unveil a government program targeted at mainly white, working class communities, he said, according to the daily. "You need to be prepared to let people's real underlying fears and concerns come out, but to be able to address them frankly and openly," he said.
He gave the example of perceptions of unfair allocation of public housing and new jobs, and hinted at changes to let local people to "influence and shape" better how resources are distributed in their area.
Police said they were attacked with bricks and bottles outside Harrow Central Mosque.
One person was arrested to prevent a breach of the peace, and nine others for possession of offensive weapons including bottles of bleach, a hammer and a chisel.
Police moved in after a crowd of angry Muslim youths, some wearing masks over their faces, threw sticks and stones at a small group of about a dozen mostly shaven-headed protestors.
It sounds like it was the masked Muslims who committed all the violence, so of course the fewer than a dozen picketers were blamed.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, during his most recent meeting with party and military leaders, reportedly gave instructions that the reclusive regime prepare for a third nuclear test, this time using enriched uranium, according to reports from Free Radio of North Korea, based in South Korea.
Kim "emphasized the importance of improvement of nuclear technologies with the aim of attracting the U.S. to direct bilateral talks," according to the radio station's source.
The meeting during which this order was reportedly given took place on Aug. 26 in the port city of Wonsan and was attended by military leaders and high-ranking officials of the North Korean regime.
Kim reportedly proposed the measure as a mean of luring the U.S. to conduct direct talks with North Korea, and to loosen sanctions against Pyongyang.
I suppose that makes sense to him but it sure doesn't to us ...
The source said Sept. 20, which marks the official end of the "150-Day Battle" to achieve higher productivity, is a possible date for the test. Another date mentioned was Oct. 10, the day of the founding of the Labor Party of Korea.

Maybe this extortion attempt will blow in the launch bay.
Interesting article, although awkwardly translated
A prosecutor in Russia has asked Swedish authorities for information about an extreme Islamist homepage in Sweden. The reason is that a threat towards a Russian civil servant has been published on the homepage. This is reported in the Swedish Public Radio broadcaster SR in the programme ŽMediernaŽ. The homepage is called Kavkaz Center and has substance with encouragement to Jihad and extreme violence. It describes itself as an independent Chechen news source and it is formally based in Sweden. The homepage shows for example videos of successful bombings and assasination combined with suggestive religious music.
According to Medierna, there is also an explicit threat towards a Russian civil servant written by an anonymous person on the homepage. But why did Russian authorities contact Sweden? What is special with this homepage is that in the middle of all this, there is a text claiming that the site is protected by the Swedish constitution of press freedom. The Russian wanted to know who this anonymous writer is which made the threat. They sent their question to Swedish authorities and it was handled by the Swedish Attorney-General, Göran Lambertz, who said no to the Russian demand for a name.
The reason was, according to Lambertz, that while the homepage has been granted authorization to publish which means that they have a strong protection in the Swedish constitution. According to this, it is forbidden to give out the names of the writers in the specific media source. The condition is that the news source must have a specific person that is entitled Žlegally responsible publisherŽ. But Medierna did some research about Kavkaz Center and it turned out that they might not have a legally responsible publisher. They person who was registered as the repsonsible publisher was called but he said that he had left the newspaper. He thought it had become too extreme according to Medierna.
Then Medierna called the person who is, according to the website, its publisher. This turned out to be a very young man who is studying in a small town in north-Sweden. He said on the phone to Medierna that he is certainly not the publisher of the site but that his uncle in Turkey convinced him to put his name on the paper. Formally therefore, the news source seems not to have a legally responsible publisher. This does not mean however that their protection is taken away directly but that it will be investigated.
Medierna brings in their programme an intricate question to debate. Is it possible that extreme organizations abroad use the strong Swedish press freedom to cover threats and extreme propaganda? It is obvious in this case that people in Sweden have been pressured to put their names on it to position the website in Sweden with its strong protection.
Kavkaz CenterŽs news site was started in Lithuania in the late 1990Žs. After pressures from Russia it was however closed down. Then the site moved to Finland but the same thing happened. Now it has moved to Sweden is has a much stronger protection.
Medierna asked Mr Lambertz how this can be possible.
Lambertz: I have never seen this kind of situation before. If there is no legally responsible publisher, the authorization to publish and therefore the consittutional protection should be withdrawn. We might have to take a closer look at this.
Medierna: Is there a risk that Sweden becomes a free haven for spread of terror?
Lambertz: No, I do not think so. If you commit a crime in Sweden the authorities will take you.
Medierna: But, here they commit a crime (threats) without any reaction from Swedish authorities. You have not done anything in this case.
Lambertz: I do not act at all if there is no legal charge put up against them.
Note: The quotes are translated from Swedish and not exact.

Kavkaz is still around? Geez, I thought the Russians would have taken them down a long time ago. Very fanatical pro-Chechen terrorist, anti Russian site.

First he said, My knowledge isnt so compartmentalized that I cant see the forest for the trees.
Lastly, he said, It should be obvious that very unpleasant things are coming to major US cities near most of you soon.
The article is surprisingly silent about the demographics of these neighborhoods, where vehicles including a tram with passengers were set afire. Curious omission.

"That which is very serious is that we have noticed how racist tendencies are starting to grow. This prompts some very strong emotions, even if the majority of those that call are level-headed people,"
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is to arrive this afternoon in Cairo to meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Netanyahu is to ask Mubarak to put pressure on Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas to renew negotiations with Israel and to take part in a three-way summit with U.S. President Barack Obama during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly. Netanyahu and Mubarak are also expected to discuss the status of talks on the release of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit.
Netanyahu and Mubarak are to meet privately and then be joined by others. They will then dine together when Mubarak breaks the day's Ramadan fast.
Ties between Netanyahu and the Egyptian president have grown closer over the past six months; the two leaders speak by phone on a weekly basis. This is Netanyahu's second visit to Egypt since taking office, but in an unusual move, this time the meeting is in Cairo rather than Sharm el-Sheikh.
The prime minister is expected to update Mubarak on his conversations with members of the American administration on the issue of construction in the settlements. He will also seek Mubarak's support for American efforts toward normalization between Israel and Arab states.
Netanyahu and Mubarak are also expected to discuss the Iranian nuclear threat in light of the intent of Western countries to open a dialogue with Iran even before the U.N. General Assembly meets on September 23.

[Al Arabiya Latest] Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki renewed on Saturday Iran's readiness for negotiations over its nuclear proposals but made no direct response to calls from the major powers for urgent talks.
"By giving this package, the Islamic Republic of Iran has shown its determination to enter into negotiation on the main topics in the package," Mottaki told reporters in Tehran.
"I think that if one takes into account separate statements made by these powers, they acknowledge that our package has major topics for holding constructive negotiations," he said.
"This can be the basis of negotiations... we hope that they (the six world powers) address our package seriously, deeply and analytically."
His comments came as six world powers - Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States -- considered new proposals handed over by Iran on Wednesday to delay Western concerns about the real purpose of its nuclear program.

[Al Arabiya Latest] Israel said on Saturday it had lodged a complaint with the United Nations after two rockets fired from southern Lebanon struck the north of the country without causing any casualties as Russia voiced "particular concern" about actions that could raise tensions in the Middle East. "The sovereign government of Lebanon fails to meet its commitments under U.N. Resolution 1701 because it does not prevent the firing of rockets against our territory," Israel's deputy foreign minister Danny Ayalon told public radio.

[Iran Press TV Latest] Leader of Lebanon's Progressive Socialist Party, Walid Jumblatt, has called for a national unity government to stand against "inevitable Israeli threats." That's because governments of national unity work so well.
In an interview with Press TV, Jumblatt said the only way to resist the external threats, including the Israeli policy against Lebanon, is the formation of a nation unity government. "We will be facing huge problems; at stake is the unity of Lebanon and how to defend Lebanon against possible and inevitable Israeli aggression", Jumblatt told Press TV on Saturday. I dunno if anybody else has noticed this, but it seems like Israel only "aggresses" when people in Leb opens fire or kidnaps people or something like that.
Well sure. It's the job of the kufr, especially the juices, to bow their heads to be harvested like wheat at the behest of any Muslim. So any and all acts of self-defense are by definition aggression.
He also noted the significance of the interaction among Middle East countries, saying unity between Arabs and Iranians is crucial in preventing a possible Israeli aggression against either side.

[Iran Press TV Latest] A judiciary panel dismisses allegations made by leading opposition figure and former presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi that post-vote detainees had been sexually assaulted in Iranian jails.
"The three-member judiciary panel studied Karroubi's claims and found them completely false and politically-motivated. The panel has also called for fair and firm action against him," Fars News Agency quoted a the panel's report presented to Judiciary chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani.
"The panel concludes that there is no proof that people who Karroubi claimed of being raped, have been raped," the report said.
"These allegations and documents have been fabricated to distract public opinion," it added.
Asked about evidence on sexual assault on some detainees of post-vote unrest, Karroubi said members of Etemad-e-Melli (National Trust) Party have quoted an individual as saying that he has been arrested in a street in Tehran, beaten up and consequently raped.
"I called the person and heard his remarks. One of the Etemad-e-Melli members recorded his words on a CD, which I present to you," the cleric added.
"He said he was alone in the street when three men confronted him and took him away in their car," he said.
Karroubi cited another case saying, "This girl, whose father and some other family members have been martyred, was a supporter of presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi."
"She and her mother were shouting Allah-u Akbar (God is Great) from rooftops when she was arrested in her home. She was beaten up and secretly buried after parts of her corpse were burned by acid."
"I have heard that Mir-Hossein Mousavi took part in her funeral ceremony. I was supposed to go to her home, but had no time. My son went there for me."
The cleric said he was not absolutely sure the individuals were arrested and raped after the presidential election in June, according to the report.
"These remarks are just what I have heard. As I opposed the election result, I invited or talked to everybody who made claims," Karroubi said.
Studies by the judiciary panel revealed that father of the female that Karroubi claimed had been sexually assaulted had not been martyred, but died some years ago.
The panel proposed that outcomes of the report should be announced to the nation through mass media.
It also said the results should be sent to appropriate judicial officials to take firm action against people who acted against national interests after the presidential election and damaged the credibility of the Islamic establishment.
The three-member panel has been set up upon an order by Ayatollah Larijani, the country's chief judge, to thoroughly investigate all post-vote cases included in Karroubi's letter.
Iran's Prosecutor General, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i, deputy Judiciary Chief Ebrahim Raeesi and Judiciary adviser Ali Khalafi were named on Saturday as members of the panel.
