The United States last month launched its first dronezaps against Islamic State group-affiliated fighters in Somalia. The Horn of Africa nation has a small but growing presence of the fighters, many of them defectors from the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab ... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda... krazed killer group.
The fighters are based in northern Somalia’s rural Puntland ...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion... . Experts warn their numbers could grow as IS fighters flee Syria and Iraq.
The Islamic State group claimed its first suicide kaboom in Somalia in May which left at least five people dead.

Seven out of 10 West Africa-born migrants colonists stay on the continent, according to a December study by the Moroccan think tank OCP Policy Center.
Discouraged by the danger of passing through countries such as Libya and by harsh policies aimed at preventing migrants colonists going to Europe, many settle in "transit" countries including Morocco.
Ndiaye said he gave up after he realized reaching Spain was "too hard."
He took on several informal jobs and finally set himself up as a street vendor in Rabat, where he expects to remain.
His story illustrates a trend that has gained increasing attention from Moroccan politicians, civil society and researchers.
Morocco has turned from a transit country into a host country for immigrants colonists, according to the government’s High Commission for Planning.
"The Moroccan authorities have switched from a security approach, which criminalized illegal immigration, to a discourse of integration," said Mehdi Alioua, former head of a group that helped migrants colonists.

[AA.TR] Police in Istanbul have tossed in the slammer Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit! a total of 714 ISIS suspects during counter-terrorism operations from Sep. 1 to Dec. 26, according to security officials.
Istanbul anti-terror police department have conducted over 20 operations across the province to prevent any possible terror incident.
Among the suspects, 670 were foreigners, according to security officials, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.
During the same period, a number of planned kabooms have been thwarted, they said.
In December, four separate operations across the province saw arrests of more than 100 ISIS suspects.
On Nov. 11, an Istanbul court remanded into custody a group of six people, who were allegedly planning terror attacks on the instructions of ISIS in Syria and Iraq.
On Oct. 28, four ISIS suspects, including two females, were arrested as they attempted to bomb a parking area in a shopping mall in Bayrampasa district of the province.
In another operation on Sep. 10, at least 25 suspects, including three senior ISIS figures, were captured. They were produced before the local court, which remanded them in jug for being members of an armed terrorist organization.
During the operations, many organizational documents were seized in addition to the explosives and guns.
More than 300 people have bit the dust in ISIS-claimed attacks in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire.... so far, where the terror organization has targeted civilians in suicide bombs, rocket and gun attacks. [FoxNews] A federal judge ruled Saturday that the U.S. military must provide legal counsel to an American citizen who was picked up months ago on the Syrian battlefield and accused of fighting with Islamic State militants.
The unidentified American, who has not been charged, surrendered to U.S.-backed fighters in Syria around Sept. 12 and is currently being held in Iraq as an unlawful enemy combatant.
The American Civil Liberties Union filed a court petition challenging his detention and asking to act on his behalf to provide him access to legal counsel.
Late last month, the U.S. government acknowledged that it has detained an American citizen accused of fighting with IS for months without fulfilling his request to see a lawyer. Responding to a court order, the government said the man picked up on the Syrian battlefield indicated he was willing to talk to FBI agents but "felt he should have an attorney present."
In her ruling, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan denied the Defense Department's motion to dismiss the matter and ordered the military to let the ACLU "immediate and unmonitored access to the detainee" so that it can determine whether he wants the ACLU to represent him. The judge also ordered the Defense Department not to transfer the detainee until the ACLU tells the court of the detainee's wishes.
"This is a landmark ruling that rejects the Trump administration's unprecedented attempt to block an American citizen from challenging his executive imprisonment," said Jonathan Hafetz, senior staff attorney for the ACLU. "Ensuring citizens detained by the government have access to a lawyer and a court is essential to preserving the Constitution and the rule of law in America."
Kathryn Wyer, an attorney in the Justice Department's civil division, earlier told the court that the U.S. military was working "diligently" on the matter, but had not yet decided what to do with the detainee. Wyer cited case law stating the executive branch should be given a reasonable period of time to determine a detained individual's status.
The government said that during questioning that FBI special agents advised the detainee of his right to remain silent even though he might have spoken earlier to other interrogators. That was an apparent reference to intelligence agents who are believed to have questioned the detainee first. The government said the detainee also was advised of his right to an attorney.
But the government also acknowledged that the detainee said he "understood his rights and said he was willing to talk to the agents, but also stated that since he was in a new phase (of questioning), he felt he should have an attorney present." Maybe the U.S. military can "work diligently" in assisting the local authorities in coming up with a local version of writ of habeas corpus?

[BDSMovement] Today, in an emergency session, the overwhelming majority of the world’s nations at the UN General Assembly voted 128-9 in favor of a resolution calling on the United States to overturn its decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
This "collective act of defiance" took place despite threats from Trump’s ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, to "take names" of countries voting against the United States and Israel, and threats by Trump to cut US aid to those countries.
Israel’s ambassador to the UN accused the world body’s members of being "puppets" to the "Palestinian puppet masters", following Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s description of the UN as a "house of lies."
The resounding failure by Israel and the US administration to thwart the pro-Palestinian vote at the UN General Assembly follows a similarly embarrassing UN Security Council vote on Monday which also rejected the US-Israeli position 14-1.
Omar Barghouti, speaking on behalf of the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC), the largest coalition in Palestinian civil society, responded by saying:
This vote is further proof that the far-right Israeli-Trump alliance is more isolated than ever as the overwhelming majority of nations are finally recognizing its fatal attempt to undermine both Palestinian rights and the very rule of international law. Holding Israel accountable for its egregious, decades-old human rights violations is crucial to upholding both.
To defend the UN against this thuggery by Israel and the Trump administration, the BDS movement calls for meaningful sanctions, especially a military embargo and intensified boycott and divestment measures against Israel’s regime of oppression. BDS today is not only crucial for realizing Palestinian freedom, justice and equality. It is also critical to stopping Trump, Netanyahu and other leaders of the international far-right who are threatening world peace and global justice like never before.

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Arrest warrants have been issued for several Iraqi defense and interior ministry officials over suspicions of financial and administrative corruption.
U.S.-owned Alhurra Iraq reported that warrants were made for the arrest of 48 senior defense ministry officials over "financial and administrative corruption".
It added that similar documents were issued for tens of Interior Ministry members for similar suspicions.

We were watching from the top of Sinjar mountain how they executed and buried them using machines in mass graves," Omar added.
He described the execution of Yazidis as "the biggest genocide in the modern times."
Earlier on the day, a mass grave composed of relics of Yazidi victims was found in Sinjar, Alqurtas News website reported.
Relics of 24 Yazidis were found in Kesra al-Mei’rab village. They were shot in the heads and chests, Iraqi officials told al-Hurra TV channel.
Iraqi troops, according to the officials, were extradited to forensic medicine department to identify their relatives.

[ARABNEWS] The Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has agreed on the conditions stipulated by Baghdad’s federal government to solve outstanding problems between the two governments.
Talks will be resumed to end the punitive measures in the Kurdish region, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi said on Tuesday.
The KRG held a controversial referendum on independence in late September inside the region and disputed areas seized by the Kurdish forces during the past years.
Baghdad responded by imposing a series of punitive measures on the region including banning international flights into and from the region’s airports, shutting down the border crossings between the region, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire.... and Iran, and launching a huge military campaign to drive the Kurdish forces back to the 2005 constitutionally approved border.
Considering the September referendum illegal, Baghdad took steps to reinforce federal writ in and around the region, which has been autonomous since 2003. Abadi said there is a dispute between Baghdad and the KRG over the border of the region and the running of the border of the country.
"The constitution was clear relating to the border of the region and it was recognized (by the constitution) as the border of the region on March 9, 2001, but the regional (Kurdish) forces were out of these borders," Abadi said on Tuesday in his weekly presser.
"Also, the border (of the country) should be exclusively under the control of the federal government... so we took several measures to control the border and the border crossings.
"Now the regional government and the (Kurdish) officials said that they agree on these two points (conditions) and let’s talk," Abadi said.
"I consider this an essential change... but we want to reiterate two things ‐ which are the referendum was illegal and (there will be) no return to it (the results) again. The second thing is the recognition of the 2003 borders of the region and the borders (of the country) should be under the control of the central government."

"The plan involves building a bridge linking Abu Dis to the al-Aqsa Mosque compound [in East Jerusalem al-Quds] with the ostensible aim of ensuring [Paleostinians] access to the mosque," the Hamas leader asserted.
Haniyeh added, "There is also a talk of dividing the al-Aqsa Mosque compound into three separate parts."
The Hamas chief also criticized some regional Arab states for normalizing diplomatic ties with Israel at the expense of Paleostinian people.
Haniyeh then slammed the Tel Aviv regime for its settlement expansion activities in the occupied Paleostinian territories.
On December 6, Trump announced his decision to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital and relocate the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds.

Can you talk about "killing" something that never was alive?
[PRESSTV] Forty Syrian "opposition" groups have rejected a Russian initiative for holding a congress with the participation of Syria’s conflicting sides in the Black Sea resort of Sochi next month.
In a joint statement on Monday, the so-called Syrian opposition faction which also includes Ahrar al-Sham ...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014... and US-backed Mutasem Brigades, said the congress is aimed at undermining a parallel UN-backed Syrian peace talks in Geneva.
"We completely reject Russia's attempt to circumvent the Geneva track," the statement said.
"We call on all forces to stand in one rank against these alarming dangers," the opposition faction noted.
On Friday, Russia and Iran, both allies of the Syrian government, agreed with opposition-backer The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire.... to hold a "Congress of National Dialogue" in Sochi on January 29 and 30.
Syria's government immediately announced that it would attend the event.
Syrian Kurdish and Christian parties voiced support for the Sochi initiative on Tuesday, calling it their "right" to attend the congress.

[AlAhram] Russia has started establishing a permanent military presence at naval and air bases in Syria, the defence minister said on Tuesday as parliament ratified a deal with Damascus to cement Russian presence in the country, the RIA news agency reported.
The deal, signed on Jan. 18 will expand the Tartus naval facility, Russia's only naval foothold in the Mediterranean, and grant Russian warships access to Syrian waters and ports, Viktor Bondarev, head of the upper house security and defence committee, told RIA.
RIA news agency separately quoted Sergei Shoigu as saying: "Last week the Commander-in-Chief (President Vladimir Putin ...Second and fourth President and sixth of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead... ) approved the structure and the bases in Tartus and in Hmeimim (air base). We have begun forming a permanent presence there."
The Tartus naval facility, in use since the says of the Soviet Union, is too small to play host to larger warships.
According to the RIA report, the agreement will allow Russia to keep 11 warships at Tartus, including nuclear vessels. The agreement will last for 49 years and could be prolonged further.
The Hmeimim air base, from which Russia has launched numerous air strikes in support of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad Despoiler of Deraa... during his war with rebels, can now be used by Russia indefinitely, according to the deal.
