Police say an "Ugly Betty" actor is now facing charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon after he held his mother hostage and then murdered her with a samurai sword while screaming Bible passages Tuesday in Brooklyn. A man with issues.
Neighbors identified the suspect as Haitian-American actor Michael L. Brea, who has had roles on the TV series "Ugly Betty" and movie "Step-Up 3-D." He was also the face of a campaign for the energy drink Coca-Cola: Full Throttle, according to Haiti Internet movie database website BelFim.com. Just what do they put in this Full Throttle stuff anyway?
Neighbors on the first and third floors of 501 Park Place in Prospect Heights heard screams coming from the apartment on the second floor at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
"I hear the brother chasing her [his mother] through the house and he's just saying a bunch of like [Bible] passages like, 'Repent, Repent, Repent,'" said neighbor Gregory Clare. "I heard him chasing her through the house and I hear a loud scream and so I have my father call the cops, call 911."
When responding officers arrived, they encountered the mentally disturbed 31-year-old Brea. He was very combative toward the first responders, who had to taser the man in order to subdue him.
Brea was transported to Kings County Hospital with a police guard assigned to him.
Officers described the crime scene as "extremely bloody" where the victim was discovered and immediately pronounced dead. She was identified as 55-year-old Yannick Brea.
Sources close to the investigation told PIX 11 News that Brea used a samurai sword to attack his mother, whose body was found badly hacked, decapitated and stabbed multiple times in another room. Yikes! A full throttle maniac indeed.
"'Somebody was getting murdered or something to me, that's what it [the screams] sounded like," one neighbor told PIX 11 News. Looked like a murder too, according to others.
"I had just dozed off to go to sleep and then I woke up to somebody screaming," said Bernard Bent, another resident. "It sounded like lady's voice and after I while I just didn't hear the woman's voice again."
Neighbors described Brea and his mother as "quiet people." They also said Brea did not give any outward indication of mental illness, and it is unknown what made the actor snap. He apparently had an affinity for martial arts. Another quiet one. I'm sure glad my neighbors are raucous hell-raisers.
Some neighbors complained cops didn't move fast enough to subdue Brea with a Taser. Police responded, saying that residents may not know that standard procedure with a barricaded suspect is to isolate and contain the suspect, then wait for the patrol supervisor and Emergency Services Unit to arrive.
Those Emergency Services officers have special training for dealing with barricaded suspects. Police say Michael Brea has no prior arrest record and there were no previous domestic incidents reported at the location in Brooklyn where the deadly attack occurred. It only takes one.
Brea is a native New Yorker, and has a twin brother. He attended Baruch College and, in 2007, opened a Subway Restaurant, located at 1709 Broadway in Brooklyn, according to BelFim.com.
For Thanskgiving 2008, the website says Brea gave away 300 turkey foot-long sandwiches for free. At least the turkey community is not shocked by his behavior last night.
"I remember growing up and my mother was always feeding people who were less fortunate," Brea told BelFim.com in a July 2009 interview. "My parents [Marcel and Yannick] raised me to always share and to give charity in the name of God!"
Charges are pending against Brea as the investigation continues.

A lot of the kids in high school and college are anime otaku (fanboys), including my computer-nerd senior. he spent the summer in a "pre-college" program, and every kid in the dorm with him (just about) was into that stuff to some degree. All bright kids, all well-behaved, all of them pretty classy.
This guy was a nutcase. You can no more blame his fascination with Japan for his troubles than you can say that he was driven to it by the King James Bible he was quoting from.

In my experience, martial-arts nutbars own katana. American otaku are more likely to have a shotgun in the closet - trap-shooting's one of those low-impact "sports" which appeal to the stereotypically sedentary fanboy.

[Emirates 24/7] An Indian-origin woman has been has been jugged for 16 months afer she was found guilty of sexual misconduct.
Hina Patel, 37, confessed that she had sex with two 15-year-old students earlier this year, reports The Sun.
Both boys had a poor disciplinary record at school and one of them had juvenile convictions, Patel's lawyer revealed in the Liverpool court.
Patel, a signle mother of two boys, was employed to supervise 'disruptive' 15-year-olds at Birkdale High School near Southport, Merseyside, but she quickly started flirting with them and during one-to-one supervision she exchanged mobile numbers with the boys.
A week later, she invited the boys over to her house where she had sex with both the boys, the prosecution told the court.
The Judge accepted that Patel's behaviour was 'out of character' and added that "I have no hesitation whatsoever in coming to the conclusion that these offences were so serious only an immediate custodial sentence can be justified."
Patel, who was present in the court at the time of sentencing, dabbed her nose with a tissue as she was jugged for 16 months for each of the two offences, to be served concurrently.
Patel has also been banned from working with children under the age of 16, being alone in the company of children under the age of 16 - apart from her own children - and also banned from using social networking sites to contact children.

Both lad's former disciplinary problems have been resolved, and both have scored within the upper 5% on recent General Certificate Secondary Ed (GCSE) testing. Former teacher Hina Patel has immigrated to the USA and is now employed by the TSA as a screener. All's well that ends well I always say.
[Bangla Daily Star] A child who was set afire by a quack for treatment died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday after fighting for life for 34 days.
Seven-year-old Fazle Rabbi of Bagmara in Rajshahi, who had neurological problems, was taken to local quack Abdul Wahed. The quack told his guardians the boy was caught by a genie and needed a 'fire treatment' to drive it away.
On October 20 midnight Wahed set Rabbi on fire to "oust the genie living inside him and causing severe headache".
Seriously burned Rabbi was first taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital and later shifted to the DMCH burn unit on October 24.
Dr Samanta Lal Sen, project director of the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit, told The Daily Star around 40 percent of the boy's lower part was burned. Excessive heat and direct fire had caused serious damage to his body.
Amena Khatun, grandmother of the boy, said, "Wahed told us that Rabbi's headache would be healed if the genie was ousted. He also said the genie would flee because of fire."
Rabbi was first taken to RMCH in the first week of October when he had the headache. Seeing no improvement his family took him to the quack in Sripur village in Bagmara.
"Wahed put the boy on the ground and dug a two-foot-deep circling him. on the yard in front of his house. He poured fuel into the pit and put the boy onto it tying him with a banana tree. Then his assistant set fire to the fuel," she added.
Terrified by that day's experience, Amena burst into tears when she was talking to this correspondent.
"The quack ordered his assistant to hold Rabbi in the fire as long as he (quack) prostrated. My grandson was screaming in pain. But the quack did not allow anybody to touch him saying it was the genie, not Rabbi, that was screaming," Amena continued.
"After a long time the assistant got Rabbi out of the fire. The assistant also suffered burns during the process," she said.
Rabbi's father Md Kawsar, a rickshaw-van puller, filed a case with Bagmara police against Wahed on October 21.
He told The Daily Star the quack had taken Tk 2,000 from them saying he would cure Rabbi.
Harun-ur-Rashid, officer-in-charge of Bagmara police station, said yesterday evening they had arrested Wahed and his assistant and taken the quack on two-day remand.

Not sure of the success. You can beleive the young lad isn't complaining about his headache so much. But the article doesn't say whether the genie was ousted or not.

[Emirates 24/7] The European Union banned on Tuesday all Afghan airlines from flying in the 27-nation bloc due to the poor safety record of its civil aviation oversight system.
Russian planes, Ukrainian training and Insh'allah maintenance ...
The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, also added Mauritania Airways to its black list of high-risk airlines along with new carriers from Gabon, Afric Aviation, and Kyrgyzstan, CAAS.
State-owned Ariana Afghan Airlines had been the only airline from Afghanistan on the list but the EU decided to extend the ban to the other three air carriers certified in the war-torn country.
The commission cited "safety deficiencies identified in its system to oversee civil aviation and on several carriers."
The EU executive said it was ready to provide active support to Afghanistan's efforts to improve civil aviation oversight and safety in cooperation with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Afghan transport minister Daoud Ali Najafi said earlier this month that he would go to Brussels to present an action plan to the EU's air safety panel that was authorised by President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai.

[Bangla Daily Star] BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday filed two petitions with the Appellate Division of Supreme Court, bringing a contempt of court charge against the government over her recent "eviction" from her prior residence in Dhaka Cantonment, and seeking permission to return to the disputed house.
She also sought a status quo on the house so the government could not change or alter the nature and character of the premises till hearing of her leave to appeal petition pending with the same court.
After a brief hearing, Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice SK Sinha yesterday sent the petitions to the full bench for hearings on November 29.
With the latest two, the BNP chief now has four petitions with the Appellate Division in connection with the disputed Shaheed Mainul Road residence, all of which will be heard by the full bench on November 29, as the previously filed two petitions had already been scheduled to be heard on that day.
One of the prior two petitions is for a leave to appeal against a High Court Division verdict which on October 13 upheld the government notice asking her to vacate the cantonment house. The same verdict also allowed Khaleda 30 days to vacate the house.
The other prior petition seeks a stay order on that HC verdict.

[Al Jazeera] The supreme court in British Columbia has begun hearings on whether Canada's anti-polygamy law violates rights to freedom of religion guaranteed by the constitution.
The court is focusing on a breakaway sect of the Mormon church that has practiced multiple marriages at its compound in rural British Columbia since the late 1940s.
"We are beginning on an historic reference," Robert Bauman, the chief justice of the court said on Monday.
This could also expand in scope to include members of polygamous Mohammedan communities.
Condoning abuse
Canadian prosecutors have previously declined to pursue polygamy cases. Critics of the practice said the government was condoning abuse of women and kiddies.
Craig Jones, a lawyer for the province, has warned a judge that declaring polygamy a protected religious practice would make Canada the only Western country to allow multiple marriages.
Canada's westernmost province took the rare step of asking the court to rule on the law last year, after a judge threw out polygamy charges against two church sect leaders.
At the time, a provincial front man said polygamy causes "serious social harms," and Rob Nicholson , a federal justice minister, has said it "has no place in modern Canadian society."
'Religious right'
Winston Blackmore and James Oler, sect leaders, have argued they have a religious right to practice polygamy under Canada's constitution.
That claim has so far stalled government attempts to prosecute them, despite police investigations going back 20 years.
Each man heads rival factions of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints near Bountiful, in the province's remote southeast corner.
The church is a breakaway polygamous sect of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, based in the United States, where some members have been successfully prosecuted on charges related to polygamy.
A final ruling is likely to take years and the case is expected to eventually be taken up by the British Columbia court of appeals and perhaps Canada's federal supreme court.

Unless fear or coersion are used, someone please tell me what would motivate any women in the 21st century would accept such a relationship?
At the root of this must surely be some form of human trafficking.
[Pak Daily Times] The country will not repeal its blasphemy law, but may amend it to prevent abuse because scrapping the legislation could fuel militancy, Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti said on Tuesday.
The law, which carries the death penalty for insulting Islam or Prophet Muhammad (PTUI!), has come under the spotlight this month after a court sentenced a Christian mother of four, Aasia Bibi, to death in a case stemming from a village dispute. Widespread media attention on the case has led to renewed appeals by human rights ... which are not the same thing as individual rights, mind you... groups for the repeal of the law. Bhatti said that would not happen.
"Repeal is not being considered though we are considering changing it so that misuse of the law should be stopped," Bhatti told Rooters.
Blasphemy convictions are common although the death sentence has never been carried out. Most convictions are thrown out on appeal, but angry mobs have killed many people accused of blasphemy.
Bhatti said consultations with Islamic holy mans and representatives of religious minorities on amending the law would soon be held. He said repealing it was not being considered because that could provoke religious parties and snuffies who want to topple the civilian government. "We have to analyse what the reaction of those having intolerant attitudes will be," he said. "At this point our aim is to stop its misuse."

How about innocent until proven guilty, and the losing party gets the death penalty?
#2
blasphemy law is one more reason to NEVER let Sharia law get a toehold in the USA or Australia
they are trying
then we LOSE freedom of speech. No freedom to criticise Islam, Mohammed or religion.
I like criticising religion, religions often have stupid elements that cause people to act irrationally due to belief in a supernatural being that doesn't exist. Stupid. I should be free to criticise and NOT be charged with blasphemy.
#3
I would like to blaspheme right now just because this article enrages me.
Allah doesn't exist. He is made up. A fairy tale, just like Santa Claus only nasty.
Mohammed never talked to the angel Gabrielle. He was having hallucinations caused by mental illness or he just made it up to try to give himself divine legitimacy as the bloodthirsty warlord he was trying to win power.
So the koran is most likely just a bunch of lies. Second most likely explanation is Mohammed was just schizophrenic, hearing voices and truly believed it.
At any rate Mohammed was not the kind of person one should make into a respected prophet. Alive today we would lock him up for murder, inciting racial violence, polygamy and pedophilia.
Go to hell, Islam, I don't respect your religion!
There you go, now take me to court for blasphemy!!
The Dalai Lama Tuesday called Islam one of the great religions, saying true jihad was about fighting negative emotions within oneself.
Speaking after receiving an honorary doctorate from Delhis Jamia Millia Islamia university, the Tibetan spiritual leader said that some mischievous elements were giving Islam a bad name.
I defend Islam, the Dalai Lama said, we should not generalize Islam due to few mischievous people. Such mischievous people are there among Hindus, Jews, Christians, Buddhists, and all religions.
Some Muslims in this country (India) told me genuine Islam practitioner must extend love and compassion to all creatures. If a person creates bloodshed they are not Muslims, he said adding, the meaning of jihad is a struggle within ourselves against all negative emotions like anger, hatred, attachment, that creates problem in the society.
He said though he had received such honors from universities throughout the world, he was particularly honored to receive one from a renowned Islamic institution in India.

another infidel authority on what true jihad is
Even the huge number of academic apologists for Islam in the US have become a bit weary of using the 'greater jihad is the struggle with yourself' tactic.
This is because a 'greater jihad' verse does exists in the Koran and there isn't anything that comes particularly close to such a verse.
If you drill down to the Hadiths and you sum all the verses that could be called 'greater jihad' they come to about 2% of those that call for killing infidels.

...we should not generalize Islam due to few mischievous people.
OK, if your talking percentages...fair enough Holy Dude. But if your talking population it's hardly what most would consider a "few". Conservative estimates of the worlds population that subscribes to Salafist jihadism is anywhere between 200 to 500 million. Now, if you extract from that figure the truly "mischievous", at current levels, you have about 3 million in the indiscrimate killing for Islam game. Of course, depending on events, that number could rise exponentially. And it would be foolish to believe that any event would ever lead these guys to give up the splodey bizz for goat farming. So, yeah, maybe the West misunderstands the Shariah and conquest stuff. But, make no mistake, many completly understand the threat.
#10
I agree that Islam is misunderstood, but totally disagree with the DL on the details of that misunderstanding. Nothing hard to understand about 'death to infidels who do not submit, death to apostates, death to blasphemers, death to those who insult MO, death to uppity women, etc.", is there?

Pity... the Dalai Lama could have stuck to the religion he knows about and talked about the need to understand and lessen the suffering we cause ourselves. Some of the adherents of Islam could benefit from that.
Great at enslaving people into servitude of an imaginary "God" and encouraging them to kill each other, hate and make life on Earth an abject misery for millions
N. Brookfield, MA -- Wendy Scott, one of two sixth-grade teachers, sent a letter home to the parents of all sixth-graders announcing that she and Susan LaFlamme were instituting a new rule barring students from carrying any writing implements on their person, in a backpack or on the school bus. The teachers' memo explained that the change was being made because of behavior problems and indicated that any student found in possession of a pen or mechanical pencil after Nov. 15 would be "assumed" to have the implement "to build weapons," or to have "stolen" it from the classroom art supply basket.
One parent said, "I thought it was a good idea." With voters like that, this helps explain why Barney Frank keeps getting re-elected. When the acting school superintendent learned about the memo and the policy, he immediately rescinded it as being 'over the top.' The school principal said, "There is nothing newsworthy about the day-to-day running of a school." Outrageous and amusing stupidity is always newsworthy, wherever it occurs.
