[ARABNEWS] An attacker with a knife killed two soldiers guarding a gate at Sudan's presidential palace before other troops shot him dead on Saturday, the president's press secretary said.
President Omar Bashir was not in Khartoum's Republican Palace at the time, press secretary Emad Ahmed told Rooters.
"A little while ago someone attacked soldiers who guarded one of the gates of the palace," Ahmed said.
"(He) did not respond to calls to stop and was rubbed out. Two soldiers were killed during the attack by someone who seemed to be suffering from a mental illness," he added.
Army front man Col. Al-Sawarmi Khalid later said the assailant, a man named Salah Haroun, stabbed one of the soldiers, took his gun, then shot a second soldier with that weapon.
"We emphasize that the situation has been completely contained ... The situation at the presidential palace has returned to normal," Khalid added. Bashir, 70, was at his official residence in another part of Khartoum at the time of the attack, the press secretary said.

Egypt's interior ministry, in a statement on its official Facebook page, said Alsayyed Abu Saree, 60, was behind the threats and had been locked away Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out! , although it did not say when.
The suspect "posted a call through jihadist websites for attacks targeting government and foreign interests... including against foreign teachers at American and international schools in the country", it said.
Interior ministry front man Hani Abdel Latif told Agence La Belle France-Presse the suspect was arrested in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, and that he holds both U.S. and Egyptian citizenship.
He also holds a certificate to teach at American schools around the world and has lived in the United States for 27 years.
In October, the American embassy in Riyadh posted a warning saying that an anonymous jihadist post specifically mentioned schools in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and Maadi, an upmarket Cairo suburb.
A similar message issued by the embassy in Cairo said the mission was "working with local schools identified with the United States or that have high concentrations of American teachers or students to review and enhance their security posture."
It also said "Americans residing in or visiting Egypt should remain vigilant regarding their personal security and alert to local security developments."

[An Nahar] Al-Qaeda said Saturday it had tried to assassinate the U.S. ambassador to Yemen with two bombs that were discovered minutes before they were due to explode.
The explosives were planted Thursday outside the house of President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi, the media arm of al-Qaeda's Yemen branch said in a statement posted on Twitter.
They were intended to be detonated when Ambassador Matthew Tueller left following a roughly hour-long visit to the house in the Yemeni capital Sanaa, it said.
There was no official confirmation of the failed plot.
Yemen is a key U.S. ally in the fight against al-Qaeda, allowing Washington to conduct a longstanding drone war against the group on its territory.
The United States considers Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula ...the latest incarnation of various Qaeda and Qaeda-allied groups, including the now-defunct Aden-Abyan Islamic Army that boomed the USS Cole in 2000... (AQAP) to be the most dangerous arm of the jihadist organization.

[ARABNEWS] Yemeni President Abdu Rabbo Mansour Hadi was ousted as leader of his own political party, the group said on Saturday, weakening his authority at a time of turmoil in the impoverished Arab nation.
The General People's Congress (GPC) has accused Hadi of backing UN sanctions against its influential former chief, President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh ... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it... , who ruled Yemen for 33 years before resigning in 2012 following mass street protests.
Hadi's dismissal as party chief came the day after he moved to end Yemen's latest political crisis by naming a new power-sharing government in the country, which is racked by religious and tribal violence.
"Losing this position leaves him without a power base outside the presidency. Previously he was speaking as both president and leader of one of the largest parties. Now he has lost this," said Mustafa Alani, a Gulf-based security analyst.
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula ...the latest incarnation of various Qaeda and Qaeda-allied groups, including the now-defunct Aden-Abyan Islamic Army that boomed the USS Cole in 2000... said on Saturday it had attempted to kill the US ambassador, Matthew Tueller, planting two bombs on Thursday outside his residence.
The devices were discovered minutes before they were due to explode, AQAP's said on its Twitter account. The claim could not be immediately verified.
The UN Security Council imposed sanctions on Saleh on Friday, accusing him of obstructing the country's political transition. In a document seen by Rooters, the US said he had become a primary supporter of the Houthis.
Saleh has denied seeking to destabilize Yemen and his supporters in the GPC staged a large rally in Sanaa on Friday against the sanctions, which are also being applied to two senior members of the Houthi ...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to Americaâ¢, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ... movement.
Hadi backers now constitute a small minority in the 34-member Cabinet, which contains nine GPC members and six Houthi members, as well as blocs representing the country's other main political factions.

The Sunday Times stated, "Last Friday, the British Jihadist went kaboom! in the Iraqi city of Baiji to become the first British suicide bomber in the country," adding that the bomber is called 'Kabir Ahmad' aka 'Abu Sumaya'. He is the father of 3 children, and is from the city of Derby.

Ahmed is reported to have been one of several suicide bombers who carried out an attack on an Iraqi police convoy in the northern town of Baiji.
Eight people were killed, including senior police officer Lt Gen Faisal Malik Zamel, who was in the town to inspect local forces.

"My brother Abu Sumayah Britani (kashmiri) done a martyrdom op in iraq killing a top iraqi commander and many regime soldiers! ALLAHU AKBAR," the post said.
"Iv never met a brother that wanted jannah more than Abu Sumayah! May Alah swt accept him and elevate his rank in Jannah!"

After the strikes, the fighters evacuated a nearby hospital and used loudspeakers to ask for blood donors, Sky News reported. And bandages for a sucking chest wound...
U.S. Central Command confirmed in a statement that U.S.-led air strikes targeted ISIS leaders near their northern Iraqi hub of Mosul late Friday, without confirming whether Baghdadi was killed, AFP reported.
"This strike demonstrates the pressure we continue to place on the ISIL [ISIS] terrorist network and the group's increasingly limited freedom to maneuver, communicate and command," US Central Command said.
Anbar province MP Mohammad al-Karbuli told Al Arabiya News Channel that coalition aircraft had targeted a gathering of ISIS leaders in al-Qaim that led to the killing of tens of people and maimed.
Karbuli said chaos ensued the air raid with ISIS members scrambling to transport their maimed to al-Qaim hospital which was overwhelmed with the number of patients.
Rooters news agency quoted two witnesses as saying an air strike targeted a house where senior ISIS officers were meeting, near al-Qaim.
The witnesses said ISIS fighters had cleared a hospital so that their maimed could be treated. ISIS fighters used loudspeakers to urge residents to donate blood, the witnesses said.
The agency also quoted residents as saying there were unconfirmed reports that ISIS' local leader in the western Iraqi province of Anbar and his deputy were killed. If we only do eight air strikes a day, but in those we kill eight ISIS leaders every day, I'm fine with that...
U.S. officials would not confirm or deny whether Baghdadi, the group's overall leader, had been targeted, the agency said.

Er huh, and al-Qaim hospital wasn't a follow-up target, or objective ?

Besoeker, deliberately attacking a hospital is a violation of the Geneva Conventions, no matter who is being treated there.

Very true Ram. When ISIS captures and beheads it's first American GI we should remind them of their obligation as non-signatories of the meaningless convention. I'm afraid Marquess of Queensberry desperately needs to be set aside.

Around Kobane, Syria, Kurdish fighters are entering villages to find them abandoned by ISIS.
Kurdish front lines in Kobane are moving forward with very little resistance. They are making gruesome discoveries, finding only the bones and the black clothing of ISIS fighters in the streets and rubble as dogs and cats in the city who were abandoned have consumed the bodies of ISIS fighters.

My original point was that the US, despite what the MSM and other detractors say, generally tries to follow the Geneva Convention, even if the other side is not a signatory and does not follow them.
Besides, the kinetic action against ISIS is being run by Susan Rice. Every target has to be reviewed and approved. I can't see her approving a strike on a hospital (or mosque), even if it was the al-Baghdadi Hospital, Command Center and Ammunition Storage building. The optics would be bad.

A series of U.S.-led airstrikes launched Friday targeted what was thought to be a gathering of Islamic State leaders in Iraq, a defense official told Fox News.
The airstrikes, that took place near the Iraqi town of Mosul near the Syrian border, destroyed a vehicle convoy of 10 armed trucks. The official offered no further information and said they could not confirm if Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was among those present.
“This strike demonstrates the pressure we continue to place on the ISIL terrorist network and the group’s increasingly limited freedom to maneuver, communicate and command,” a defense official told Fox News.
The U.S. has been launching airstrikes on Islamic State group militants and facilities in Iraq and Syria for weeks as part of an effort to give Iraqi forces the time and space to mount a more effective offensive. Early on, the Islamic State group gained ground across Iraq, as local Iraqi units threw down their weapons and fled or joined the insurgents.
The Islamic State group has proclaimed al-Baghdadi as caliph, or supreme leader, of the vast areas of territory in Iraq and Syria under its control and demanded that all Muslims pledge allegiance to him.
Al-Baghdadi, an ambitious Iraqi militant believed to be in his early 40s, has a $10 million U.S. bounty on his head. Since taking the reins of the group in 2010, he has transformed it from a local branch of Al Qaeda into an independent transnational military force, positioning himself as perhaps the pre-eminent figure in the global jihadi community.

Don't get too excited. It will take them all of 2 days to pick a new Caliph. OTOH, if they did get a bunch of the bejewled turbans at one go, that _may_ slow down their decision making a little while they sort out the pecking order.
[Iraq News] An Iraqi military official, who holds the rank of Brigadier General in the Presidency of the Army Staff, explained that the number of team members is 16 American officers, 7 elements arrived to Baghdad. They began to collect information and the establishment of an extensive database as well as recruiting local Iraqis from tribal members and citizens in the areas where ISIS exists. It is expected the arrival of the others, according to leaks obtained by the army troops.
According to the officer, who asked not to be named, this team works " within an isolated circle away from the American and Iraqi army. They have visited 3 locations outside Baghdad since their arrival last week."
The arrival of the team coincided with detection of the officer, who refused to disclose his name, that "the Iraqi intelligence service allocated an amount of 25 million in exchange for the head of al-Baghdadi."

Colonel Patrick Ryder, a Central Command front man, said the U.S. military had reason to believe that the convoy was carrying leaders of Islamic State, an al Qaeda offshoot which controls large chunks of Iraq and Syria.
The convoy consisted of 10 Islamic State armed trucks.
"I can confirm that coalition aircraft did conduct a series of air strikes yesterday evening in Iraq against what was assessed to be a gathering of ISIL leaders near Mosul," said Ryder, using another name for Islamic State.
"We cannot confirm if ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was among those present."
Islamic State had been changing its strategy since the air strikes began, switching to lower profile vehicles to avoid being targeted, according to residents of towns the group holds.

[An Nahar] A soldier who defected the army in October and joined the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra ...the current nom de guerre of al-Qaeda in the Levant, which isn't to be confused with al-Qaeda in Iraq and the Levant... Front reportedly handed himself over to the Army Intelligence.
The state-run National News Agency reported that Omar Khaled Shamtiyeh turned himself over to the Army Intelligence in North Leb.
The reasons remain vague.
Shamtiyeh was a member of the 2nd Artillery Regiment and used to serve at the al-Madfoun checkpoint on the coastal highway in the North.
He accused the military in his defection video of becoming a "subordinate to Hizbullah ...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory... " and of "killing the Sunni youths without any valid justification."
Several soldiers had announced their defection in recent months, voicing Shamtiyeh's argument.
In October also Lebanese soldier Abdul Qader Akkoumi, who was killed by the army in an ambush in the town of Assoun in the northern area of Dinniyeh, announced his defection.
Abdullah Shehadeh, who had defected to Nusra on October 10, urged troops to leave the army and "join the jihadists."
Shehadeh, who hails from the town of Mashha, defected hours after Nusra published a video in which the soldier Mohammed Antar announced that he had "joined the jihadists."
The increasing defection of troops from the army is not expected to affect the military, which comprises around 60,000 soldiers, according to military sources.
The first time a Lebanese soldier defected to the Nusra Front in neighboring Syria was in July. Corporal Atef Mohammed Saadeddine claimed in a video that his move came as a result of the injustice against Sunnis in Leb.
Islamists in the country claim that Sunnis are facing harassment by the army, which they accuse of working "under the command" of Hizbullah.

Abu Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi, a man who fought with him for IS and has since returned, said they were told that they would "carry out the operation in Al-Shaer oilfield in rural Homs."

Chris gives us Mexican press dispatches of drug and gang war violence
over three years, presented in a multi volume set intended to chronicle the death, violence and mayhem which has
dominated Mexico for six years.
Rantburg was assembled from recycled algorithms in the United States of America. No
trees were destroyed in the production of this weblog. We did hurt some, though. Sorry.
