For reals?!
The lady of the rooftop statue and the bane of Stamford White?
So sorry. Mine is Edith Nesbit, whose life, it seems, was no more respectable than Miss Evelyn's, although free-spirited rather than sordid. Fortunately for my childhood innocence, none of that crept into her writing.
A US drone attack targeted Islamist fighters in Pakistan's northwestern tribal belt on Wednesday, killing four militants and blowing their vehicle into a fireball, security officials said.
Two righteous missiles kaboomed slammed into the technical vehicle in a suburb of the thriving metropolis of Miranshah, the main wild west town in the North Wazoo Waziristan district, considered by the ISI Pakistan's premier secret lair fortress of beturbanned Islamist terrorists militants and the focus of a dramatic increase in US drone zaps strikes.
Pakistani officials said the four militants were inside the vehicle, which was destroyed, and that a nearby house in the Qutub Khel suburb was damaged.
"The drone strike killed four militants," a security official in Miranshah said on condition of anonymity.
Another security official said the vehicle had been loaded with arms and ammunition.
"It detonated in the attack and the vehicle caught fire - nobody can go near the vehicle," he said.
At least not until the fire is put out ...
A burning car in the suburbs of Pakistan's tribal belt? Nobody is going near the thing until it burns itself out -- the volunteer fire fighters have to cover an awful lot of territory in those parts, I should think.
Wednesday's attack was the second in three days, after a similar strike killed at least five militants in North Waziristan's Mir Ali area 25 kilometres east of Miranshah.
Around 200 people have been killed in nearly 40 strikes since September 3, heightening tensions with Islamabad over reported US criticism of Pakistan's failure so far to launch a ground offensive in North Waziristan.

It'll be even longer if the jihadis hadn't paid their fire bill.
Good Muslims are grateful for the opportunity to underwrite the expenses of the mujahideen in lieu of going themselves... so of course the jihadis haven't paid!
[Al Jazeera] Barack B.O. Obama has renewed sanctions against Sudan's government, keeping pressure on Khartoum
Riiight. Because it's worked so well so far.
to stick to the timetable for holding a referendum on southern independence.
Instead of just letting the south walk away ...
However, The infamous However... the US president also held out for the prospect for reconsidering Monday's decision if Sudanese leaders made progress in resolving the country's north-south dispute and improved the situation in the troubled Darfur region.
Sudan is 10 weeks away from the scheduled start of a referendum that could lead to independence for its oil-producing south. If mishandled, the referendum could destabilise the region.
How could something unstable be destabilized?
The White House issued a letter from Obama to congress saying he was extending long-standing economic sanctions, a notice required by law each year to keep them in place.
The measures restrict trade and investment in Sudan and also block the assets of the Sudanese government and certain officials, among other things.
With trust low as both sides in the referendum exchange recriminations, progress has slowed on resolving disputes such as the status of the oil-producing Abyei region, determining citizenship and forging an oil-sharing accord.
Tommy Vietor, the White House front man, said the US hoped Sudan's leaders "will make the urgent and difficult choices necessary to secure peace for the Sudanese people".
"As we work to support these choices, the United States will review the Sudanese government's progress on resolving outstanding [peace agreement] implementation issues as well as other relevant circumstances, to include improving security and humanitarian access in Darfur," he said.
"If the government of Sudan acts to improve the situation on the ground and advance peace, we stand ready to work with Sudan to ensure its rightful place in the international community."
Obama last week stressed the need to go ahead with the vote as scheduled when he spoke to Thabo Mbeki, the former South African president, who has tried to overcome obstacles in the north-south peace processor as head of an African Union panel.
South Sudan is struggling to recover from Africa's longest civil conflict, which was triggered by ethnicity, ideology, religion and resources such as oil and left an estimated two million people dead.

[Arab News] Yemen, under pressure to crack down on gunnies operating there after a foiled bomb plot involving US-bound parcels, began the trial in absentia on Tuesday of a radical US-born preacher wanted dead or alive by Washington.
Anwar Al-Awlaki, who has been linked to a failed bombing of a US-bound plane in December 2009 that was claimed by Yemen's Al-Qaeda wing, is thought to be hiding in southern Yemen.
His daddy couldn't protect him any more? How sad for him.
Also on Tuesday, the trial of a Yemeni journalist and Al-Qaeda expert was set to continue in Sanaa. Abdulelah Shai is being tried for alleged links to Al-Qaeda, including helping to publicize the views of Anwar Al-Awlaki. Two others are on trial along with Awlaki -- a relative, Othman Al-Awlaki, and Hisham Mohammed Assem, a gunman who last month killed a Frenchman at Austrian oil and gas company OMV's site. They are also being tried in absentia.
"(The three defendants) ... were members of an armed gang that targeted foreigners," the prosecutor said when reading out the charges.
The US Treasury has blacklisted Awlaki as a "specially designated global terrorist," a move that freezes any assets he may have under US jurisdiction.
Earlier this year, the United States authorized the CIA to capture or kill him. Awlaki has also been linked to an army major who went on a shooting spree that killed 13 people last year at Fort Hood in Texas.
The two parcel bombs were intercepted last week on cargo planes in Britain and Dubai are thought to be the work of Al-Qaeda's Yemen-based arm, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), US officials say.
Yemeni police jugged a young student at Sanaa University in connection with the parcel bomb plot but released her the next day, saying it had been a case of mistaken identity.

Seoul believes North Korea has started research into nuclear fusion, Defense Minister Kim Tae-young said Tuesday. "We believe it is highly likely that the North is turning nuclear materials into weapons through a uranium enrichment process," he added.
He said the South believes Pyongyang has some 40 kg of plutonium which could be turned into warheads for ballistic missiles and is seeking to reduce the size of its nuclear bombs. It was previously assumed that the North is a long way from making nuclear devices small enough to fit on a missile.
Kim said the ministry is carefully monitoring signs of unusual activity at the North's nuclear test site. "There are no clear signs of the North preparing for another nuclear test," he said.

Back in May 2010, the Norks announced that they had carried out a nuclear fusion reaction. At the time, it was thought that this was a smallish experiment. given their not-completely-successful fission detonations, I don't think anyone thinks the Norks are anywhere near being able to detonate a fusion bomb.

[Pak Daily Times] Indian troops rubbed out six hard boyz in firefights across Indian-held Kashmire, on Tuesday, raising concerns hard boyz may have stepped up violence ahead of US President Barack B.O. Obama's visit to India this week.
Kashmirei hard boyz have staged attacks across India in the past and officials voiced fears they could use violence during Obama's visit to draw global attention to the region, where separatists have fought a two-decade-old revolt against India.
International focus on disputed Kashmire, claimed in full by both India and Pakistain but divided between them, has waned in recent years, with attention diverted by the war against hard boyz in Afghanistan and Pakistain.

[Pak Daily Times] Pakistani Taliban flogged 65 men in public in the Orakzai Agency after accusing them of using and selling drugs, the group said on Monday. The men were given 10 lashes each in an open area used by children to play football and for religious sermons in the town of Mamozai in the Orakzai Agency, said Taliban spokesman Hafiz Saeed. The floggings illustrate how Pakistan's al Qaeda-linked Taliban is still able to impose harsh punishments in some parts of the northwest despite government assertions that several military offensives severely weakened the group. "They were found guilty of using and selling drugs after which our Islamic court sentenced them to punishment that was carried out in public," said Saeed. An Orakzai tribesman said about 600 people watched the lashings after the Taliban made announcements through mosques urging people to attend. People often comply with the Taliban out of fear, although the group does have supporters. "The men were brought in groups of five and were lashed 10 times each before being released," said the tribesmen, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals.

A series of kabooms across Storied Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, has killed at least 37 people and maimed at least 300 others, hospital and police officials say.
The bombings began at about 6:15pm on Tuesday and took place in at least 10 neighborhoods, involving booby-trapped cars, roadside kabooms and mortar strikes.
"Ten cars went kaboom! with bombs inside them. There were also four roadside kabooms and two sticky bombs," said Major General Qassim al-Moussawi, a Baghdad security front man.
The attacks appeared directed mostly at the city's majority Shia population, though some blasts occurred in Sunni neighborhoods as well.
Rawya Rageh, Al Jizz's correspondent in Baghdad, said most of the blasts happened near markets and banks and areas that are usually crowded at that time in the evening.
'Violent days' "There have been a series of attacks of a highly sectarian nature recently. The city is witnessing some very violent days," she said.
"It's all being blamed on the failure of Iraqi politicians to agree on the formation of a government. It's been eight months since the inconclusive March 7 elections failed to produce an outright winner.
"The people, observers and even some politicians believe the political impasse is giving opportunity to those intent on destabilising the country to sow chaos".
The combination of car bombs and roadside kabooms came just two days after gunnies in Baghdad held a Christian congregation hostage, in a siege that ended with 58 people dead.
The assailants took more than 100 people hostage in a standoff that ended after police stormed the church two hours later.
At least 25 of those killed were hostages.
Iraq officials launched an investigation into the church raid on Tuesday, saying they are trying to find out how the gunnies managed to storm the building despite checkpoints, an official said.

The military said the target was Mohammed Namnam, 25, of the Army of Islam group. A military statement asserted that the Army of Islam is tied to al-Qaida and world jihad, but Palestinians said it does not have a direct, operational connection with Osama bin Ladens group. Namnam go boom boom...
Al Qaeda affiliates do not have direct, operational connections with AQ, they consult, cross-train, and loan personnel. That doesn't make them less connected than if they were in a superior-subordinate relationship.
The military said Namnam was involved in attacks against Israelis, and recently "Namnam was involved with directing a terror attack against American and Israeli targets in the (Egyptian) Sinai Peninsula, in cooperation with Hamas elements in the Gaza Strip." It gave no further details.
Whoops! Hamas is s'posed to have a hudna with Israel, it's just that these little groups are out of their control. It appears that claim is a lie.
The airstrike took place just outside the headquarters of the ruling Hamas police force in Gaza City. Another person was injured, Hamas said. Mahmoud! Fetch the broom and dust pan!
(KUNA) -- Paleostinian Islamic Jihad's military wing "Saraya Al-Quds" announced their responsibility for shooting two Israeli soldiers and firing several mortar shells at a military base east of Gazoo.

They also fired mortar shells towards a military base, the statement added.
This attack comes as a "confirmation of the right of resistance in response to any aggression against our people and to proceed with the option of resistance and jihad until the liberation of all our lands," Saraya Al-Quds said.

[Iran Press TV] The Lebanese army has said that another Israeli reconnaissance aircraft flew into the country's airspace, an routine Tel Aviv commits on an almost daily basis.
The army said in a statement that the plane was hovering over the capital city of Beirut on Monday morning.
Leb's military often reports airspace violations by Israeli aircrafts but does not usually open fire on them.
The airspace violations contravene the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society Security Council's Resolution 1701, which ended the Israeli war on Leb in 2006.
Leb's government, the Hezbullies resistance movement, and the UN Interim Force in Leb, known as UNIFIL, have repeatedly called on Israel to respectLeb's illusory sovereignty and stop its air surveillance flights over the country.
According to evidence-backed statistics submitted to the UN by the Lebanese government, Israel has breached the provisions of the resolution on more than 7,000 occasions by violating Leb's airspace, territorial waters, and border.

[An Nahar] Security has been tightened around the police headquarters in Beirut's Ashrafiyeh neighborhood following reports that the Opposition is likely to carry out a "swift operation" to shake up the Leb situation and convey a message about what Opposition forces can do if an indictment was issued.
Information obtained by Internal Security Forces (ISF) said one of the main goals behind the "operation" was to seize control of the police headquarters and the intelligence bureau, Ad-Diyar newspaper reported on Tuesday.
It said the Hizbullah-led March 8 forces had previously leaked reports to a Jordanian newspaper about the Opposition's intention to target ISF headquarters.
Ad-Diyar quoted well-informed security sources as saying that the attackers are likely to wear police uniforms as a disguise to storm the headquarters.

Rantburg was assembled from recycled algorithms in the United States of America. No
trees were destroyed in the production of this weblog. We did hurt some, though. Sorry.
