Two army soldiers have been killed in a roadside attack in southern Afghanistan, while 25 Taliban were killed elsewhere in the country.
The two Afghan soldiers killed and two others were wounded when their vehicle was blown up by a roadside bomb blast in the Yakhchal area of Greshk district in southern Helmand province on Friday, the Afghan Defense Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
Also on Friday, in separate operations, Afghan and coalition forces killed 19 militants in Kunar and Khost provinces.
Seven militants killed in the Dara Noor district of the Kunar province, when coalition forces clashed with a group of militants, a coalition statement said, adding that the operation targeted an al-Qaeda leader, who was "believed to be in contact with other militants in the region, coordinating attacks against coalition forces and innocent civilians."
The joint forces killed 12 other militants and arrested three more in two separate clashes in Nadar Shah Kot district on Friday, the statement said.
Six other militants killed and nine others wounded in fight with Afghan army forces in Nad Ali district of southern Helmand province on Thursday, a separate Afghan Defense Ministry statement said on Saturday.
Afghanistan was hit by an unprecedented wave of violence this year, with highest record insurgent attacks.

Barney Frank fired the first warning shot. BO is going to gut the military just like Bush I and Clinton did to give us the so called "peace dividend". The problem with downsize redux is that military still has not recovered. We are probably 6 years from rightsizing the Army, and 6-10 years with the Navy, 6-8 years with the Marines Corps, and who knows with the USAF. This assumes of course that the force shaping that is going on is not once again shaping us to fight the last war.
I am pessimistic. BO and the donks don't realize that what is happening in Paris, London and Amsterdam will happen here. I would not be surprised, with the immigrant floodgate opened, that BO actually oversee the Balkanization of our major cities in order to maintain order.

Eight Pakistani soldiers have been killed in a suicide bomb attack on a security checkpoint near the Afghan border, officials say. The attack happened near Wana, the main town in South Waziristan in Pakistan's restive north-west.
Correspondents say the tribal area is considered a haven for al-Qaeda and Taleban-linked militants. Pakistan troops have been deployed in the area to combat growing militancy, but attacks have continued.
Pakistan's chief army spokesman said the bomber hit a convoy leaving the checkpoint, where troops were protecting a deployment of Pakistan's Frontier Corps. The attack came two days after suspected US missile strikes in the region killed around 20 people.
"I can confirm eight soldiers were killed," Maj Gen Athar Abbas told the BBC. "The convoy was just leaving the fort when the attack happened. We believe the actual target was the fort itself." Locals told the BBC that security forces had closed down the main road in the area following the attack, forcing traffic off the road.

Kolkata (IANS): At least six policemen were injured, three of them critically, in a landmine blast that had targeted the convoy of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan in West Bengal on Sunday, police said.
Police said the blast took place near Bhadutala in West Midnapore district when the two leaders were returning after the foundation stone laying ceremony of a 10 million tonne steel plant.
"Six policemen were injured in the landmine blast. The blast took place just after the VVIP convoy passed through that place. There are no reports of any deaths," State Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Kuldeep Singh said.
Witnesses said the last pilot car of the convoy was hit by the explosion. The injured were taken to a district health care centre.
A bomb disposal squad and a contingent of police led by Singh reached the spot. They cordoned off the entire area and launched a search operation in the district.

District central leader and a senior worker Ghulam Mohammad Sunni of the banned religious organization Sippah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) was targeted and killed by unidentified armed men.
The incident took place when Sunni, 33, was coming out of the Siddiq-e-Akbar Masjid, after offering Esha prayers, situated at Nagan Chowrangi within the jurisdiction of Sir Syed Police Station. Two armed men on a motorcycle opened indiscriminate fire on him, said New Karachi Town SP Dr Farooq Ahmed.
A TT pistol was used in the target killing, revealed DSP Javed Aslam, he added that Sunni received at least six bullet wounds. Following the incident, riots broke out in Nagan Chowrangi and its surrounding areas. The daily life of the area was suspended when unidentified men resorted to aerial firing, they burnt tires and pelted passing vehicles with stones.
Heavy contingents of law enforcers arrived on the scene and were unsuccessful in trying to gain control of the situation. No FIR was registered till this report was filed. SP Ahmed said that the situation was taken under control.
Sunni lived in the Fatima Jinnah Colony at Nagan Chowrangi, he had his own business and was a father of four children.
His body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, tension broke out in the areas around the hospital as shop shutters were closed and routine life was suspended.
Moulana Ghaffor Nadim of the SSP, while talking to Daily Times, condemned the incident and said that Sunni was the district central leader and was a senior worker of SSP. Stating that the government knows who the killer is, Nadim demanded the arrest of the culprits.

Eight Taliban were killed and 10 others injured as helicopter gunships targeted Taliban positions in the Mamoond tehsil of Bajaur Agency on Saturday. The Taliban positions were targeted in Damadola and Mataro Sha areas of Mamoond, locals said.
Volunteers from the Mamoond tribe have captured several checkposts abandoned by the Taliban in different areas.

Mortar shell: At least two people including a child were killed when a mortar shell landed in a house in the Chargali village of the Ambar tehsil of Mohmand Agency.
Unidentified men kidnapped a political moharir and six tribal elders from the Qandaharoo tehsil of Mohmand Agency. The moharir was identified as Amir Taj.
Taliban and security forces exchanged fire in the Mohamdghat area of the Saafi tehsil in the agency, but no casualties were reported.
At least seven civilians were killed as a mortar shell exploded in the Venai area of Matta tehsil in Swat. Six more people sustained injuries in the incident, witnesses said. The locals had been waiting at the Venai bridge for its opening.
Locals said the security forces started the shelling after Taliban attacked their checkpost in the area. According to an APP report, a spokesman of the Swat Media Centre denied the incident. He said the security forces had targeted Taliban commander Sher Ali's hujra in Venai village, which was being used by the Taliban as a resting place. He denied that the civilian population was targeted in the attack, but said the Taliban used civilians as a shield. In the Sar Senai area of Kabal tehsil, security forces demolished nine houses of Taliban in an ongoing operation.

Police arrested a would-be suicide bomber and a suspected armed person in Shabqadar in Charsadda district during the passing-out parade of the Frontier Corps (FC), which NWFP Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani was also attending.
The would-be suicide bomber was arrested when he was around 200 metres away from the governor, police said, adding he had been shifted to Peshawar for investigation.
Police said the name of the suspected person arrested by the Shabqadar police was Sajjad, a resident of Mardan Garhi Kapoora. Police refused to share more details.
Law enforcement agencies cordoned off the entire Shabqadar area after the arrests.

Debka reported that the Syrians had moved their 3rd Army and 8th Army from the Iraq border South to menace Lebanon, leaving the border open to any terrorists who want to cross into Iraq.
Which also means that any US forces who are idle might join with these Iraqi troops. This would send a message that if Syria decided to invade Lebanon or attack Israel, that its Iraqi border would be undefended.

Islamic terrorists are moving to a new strategy, opting for attacks against Christian clergymen and activists, targeting vital installations across the country instead of US interests, this according Police spokesman Inspector General Abubakar Nataprawira. Equally the threat of attacks linked to the November execution of three men sentenced for the October 2002 Bali bombings (pictured) remains high.
Inspector General Nataprawira spoke at a press conference, unveiling the results from investigations sparked by the arrest on 21 October in Kelapa Ganding (North Jakarta) of members of a new terror group called Tauhid Wal Jihad.
They were planning attacks against Christian priests and peace activities involved in peace actions and interfaith activities against terrorism, the inspector said.
Hezbollah has appointed a replacement for Imad Mughniyah, the Lebanese militant group's operations chief who was assassinated in February, the Kuwaiti newspaper Al Rai Al Aam reported on Friday.
The paper identified the replacement as Mustafa Shahada, a member of the group's military apparatus since its founding. It should be noted that the report has not been corroborated by any other source.
According to the report, the decision was apparently reached ahead of Hezbollah's general convention a few weeks ago.
Al Rai Al Aam described Shahada as a professional fighter who is highly regarded by the group's guerillas and leadership. Shahada has kept a very low profile until today, and is credited with having good operational capabilities.
"This commander... is very aware of [Hezbollah's] aspirations, and knows how to carry out its purposes and vision in the medium and long term," the paper wrote.
The daily also confirmed earlier reports that should Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah become incapacitated in some way, his nephew Hasham Tzefi A-Din will stand in for him. It added that Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has made a special religious decree allowing for Nasrallh to continue as Hezbollah's secretary general despite a limit set by the group's regulations.
Last month, Nasrallah reiterated his vow to avenge the assassination of Mughniyeh in a Damascus car bombing, for which he blames Israel. Israel has denied involvement in the incident.

Two people accused of spying for Israel have been arrested in Lebanon, the army said in a statement on Saturday.
The suspects, detained by army intelligence, had been found in possession of sophisticated cameras and communication devices, the army said in a statement. "They admitted gathering information on political party offices and monitoring the movements of party figures for this enemy," it said, adding that they were detained on Friday.
It did not give the nationality of the pair, who it said "belonged to a terrorism and spy network involved in dealing with the Israeli enemy". An army official declined further comment because of the continuing investigation.
They were detained after investigations in the Bekaa valley region of eastern Lebanon, where the Shiite Hezbollah resistance movement has a strong presence.
