A man shot three people who police say were robbing and assaulting him Monday morning.
The victim was in his home with another man when three suspects went in. Did they ring the bell, I wonder? Or did he know his assailants?
One started assaulting him while two other suspects started loading the man's property into a vehicle that was parked outside where a fourth suspect was waiting, police said.
The man picked up a weapon just lying around all over the place and shot three of the suspects, police said. They fled in the vehicle and eventually stopped at North Cedar Ridge Drive and West Camp Wisdom Road where police responded. Next to Duncanville High School, where my three kids attended and graduated 15-20 years ago. None of us live there anymore.
The three injured suspects were transported to a local hospital and the fourth suspect fled before officers arrived, police said. I heard it on the radio yesterday evening, but had to google-search for it. I could not find it on the newspaper's website this morning. Imagine that.

[Breitbart] Chicago reached 59 murders and 362 gunshot victims in September, marking the Democratic-run city's deadliest month since 2002, according to analysis by The Chicago Tribune.
The last month of summer featured more homicides than any other month this year, and more than any summer month since the prior decade.
According to the Tribune, September ended with two consecutive weekends during which more than 50 people were shot. There more than 40 shootings each weekend in August.
September ended on a deadly note not just for the city in general, but for one South Side family in particular.
On Sunday the 27th, a Chicago family was gunned down as they were returning home. One of the family members shot was an young boy, who was rushed to hospital by a Chicago cop, likely saving his life. But the boy's grandmother and mother were killed at 7:30 PM, when the five family members were fired upon after arriving home that evening.
When officers arrived they found the severely injured boy and instead of waiting for an ambulance they made the snap decision to drive the child to the hospital on their own. "The officer saw a seriously injured 11-month-old child and made a decision to transport that child immediately to a hospital," Chicago Deputy Chief Eugene Roy said. "He made the right call, and he is somebody we are very proud of."
Police think that the targets were two men of the family who were both wounded in the drive by shooting. It is assumed the shooting was gang related.

I had a TS/SCI clearance my entire time in the Air Force, even as a reservist. SI/TK was NORMAL. I was also told it was a criminal offense to even say what the initials stood for. SCI stands for Sensitive Compartmented Information. It covers a multitude of sins.

A lot of material has been declassified in the last 26 years, but I have no idea what has, and what hasn't. Following an increase in dengue cases, the provincial government realised that the local administration could not be relied on to carry out an effective anti-dengue drive. These teams will pay a door-to-door visit and inspect the situation on the ground.
Three monitoring tiers have been established that will look into the work of Rawal Town Municipal Administration, departments of health, environment and others. A special branch of police, assistant commissioners and 10 teams will also inspect the work of anti-dengue drive workers.
Commissioner Zahid Saeed told Dawn that the Punjab government had revised the anti-dengue campaign, directing the local administration to divide the 46 union councils of Rawal Town into three categories - red, orange and yellow.
"Union councils where more than seven dengue cases are reported are declared red, while areas from where fewer patients have been brought to the hospitals have been declared orange and then yellow," he added.

[NYTIMES] The tropical storm had been newly christened Joaquin not long before the fat merchantman El Faro pulled out of the busy port in Jacksonville, Fla., last Tuesday, heading for San Juan, P.R. It was a familiar run for the old ship, ferrying goods on the 1,200-mile route, one it had made countless times.
For many experienced captains of large vessels, a tropical storm is cause for concern but not necessarily alarm. It is carefully monitored and meticulously charted. Tropical storms in the Caribbean are commonplace, and do not necessarily lead to canceled voyages, veteran captains said.
But by the time El Faro and its 33 crew members approached the Bahamas, the storm had turned treacherous far more quickly than initially forecast. It hurdled past hurricane categories 1, 2 and 3 until it settled at 4, a fearsome ball of wind, waves and rain, and then it sat patiently. By Thursday, El Faro was trapped in the crush of 50-foot seas and 120-knot winds. Listing 15 degrees, the ship, full of cargo containers and cars, was taking on water. The engine failed, making it impossible to steer the ship. Then, after a distress signal, all communication vanished.

Son of Gazetteer author Horatio Gates Spafford and Elizabeth Clark Hewitt Spafford, he married Anna Larsen of Stavanger, Norway on September 5, 1861, in Chicago. The Spaffords were well known in 1860s Chicago. He was a prominent lawyer, a senior partner in a large and thriving law firm. He and his wife were also prominent supporters and close friends of evangelist Dwight L. Moody.
Spafford invested in real estate north of an expanding Chicago in the spring of 1871. When the Great Fire of Chicago reduced the city to ashes in October of that same year, it also destroyed most of Spafford's sizable investment.
Two years later, in 1873, Spafford decided his family should take a holiday somewhere in Europe, and chose England knowing that his friend D. L. Moody would be preaching there in the fall. He was delayed because of business, so he sent his family ahead: his wife and their four children, daughters eleven-year-old Tanetta, nine-year-old Elizabeth "Bessie", five-year-old Margaret Lee, and two-year-old Anna "Annie".
On November 22, 1873, while crossing the Atlantic on the steamship Ville du Havre, their ship was struck by an iron sailing vessel and 226 people lost their lives, including all four of Spafford's daughters. Anna Spafford survived the tragedy. Upon arriving in England, she sent a telegram to Spafford beginning "Saved alone." Spafford then sailed to England, going over the location of his daughters' deaths. According to Bertha Spafford Vester, a daughter born after the tragedy, Spafford wrote "It Is Well with My Soul" on this journey.

[Telegraph] SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois residents seeking help through their local emergency 911 systems may be on their own if the budget fight between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats in the Legislature continues.
The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers reports without a budget in place, emergency call systems are no longer receiving revenue from a tax on cell phone users.
Under state law, 911 fees for landline phones are paid to county-level systems. Fees for cell phones go into a statewide pool. But Rauner says without a budget in place the money cannot be distributed.
"It's hurting every 911 center," said Connie Armstrong of the Woodford County 911 service. "That's money we use to pay our bills. We don't know what we're going to do."

[BLOOMBERG] Americans' love affair with beef is fizzling. It's a matter of price per pound. A tasty tender cut of pork can be had for $3 to $3.50 a pound. A decent steak will run you $15 a pound. which is 4.28 to five times as much.
In the U.S., a country known for drive-thru burger joints and over-sized steaks, demand for the meat on a per-person basis is slumping to the lowest in more than four decades. With consumers bracing themselves for another slow patch in the economy, shoppers are increasingly choosing cheaper pork and chicken as alternatives. A cow drops a calf a year. A sow has three litters in two years. A steer weighs about 1300 pounds at slaughter. A hog weighs 275 to 300 pounds, but sows are now spitting out litters of twelve, which makes 3300 pounds or so. The steer takes a year or better to slaughter, the piggies get to eat like hogs for five to six months. That's 2600 pounds of beef to market in two years, 9900 to 13,200 pounds of pork in the same period. That works out to 3.8 to five times as much poundage. (Anybody who actually raises the things can correct me if I'm wrong.)
"There's definitely been a slowdown in beef" purchases, said Derek Luszcz, the 42-year-old co-owner of Gene's Sausage Shop and Delicatessen in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown ... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,... , a butcher shop that also sells deli meats and other groceries. "A lot of it is about the price. People have changed their diets to different things." People used to eat Grade A beef. Then the consumer demanded USDA Choice, then Prime, and now Black Angus. I have no idea what the actual difference is among the grades except for price, which went up continuously.
Waning consumption drove cattle futures lower by 12 percent last quarter, the biggest slide since the depths of the global recession in 2008. Money managers are signaling they expect more declines, trimming their bullish holdings to the lowest in more than two years. At the same time, the speculators expect that hog futures will start to rebound, and increased their wagers on a rally for a fourth straight week.
Smaller Herds
Both beef and pork prices soared in 2014 after years of drought whittled the U.S. cattle herd down to a six-decade low, and a piglet-killing virus tightened hog supplies. While producers of both animals expanded to capture profits, pigs multiply far more rapidly. Pork output will be a record in 2015, while beef production is set to shrink from last year. Beef's premium to pork is more than 20 percent higher than the 10-year average, and as job growth slows, Americans are opting to buy the cheaper meat.
"We saw a definitive shift in consumer buying from beef to pork" in recent months, said Christopher Narayanan, the New York-based head of agricultural research at Societe Generale SA. "That's U.S. consumers being a little bit more choosy. They weren't as confident about spending too much money."
The net-long position in cattle slid 3.7 percent to 4,721 futures and options contracts in the week ended Sept. 29, the lowest since March 2013, U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission data show. Hog wagers expanded 10 percent to 33,046 contracts, the highest since February.

When 'all beef' guts, skin and tendons went to $7.65/lb for burger, this guy switched to pork steaks @$3.86/lb. Fresh free range, grass fed, unmedicated (wild) pork is less than that.

I saw some serious slabs of pork tenderloin at the supermarket for about $3.50 / lb today; by way of comparison, freaking beef ribs that were half bone ran $4.95 / lb. I'll be cooking much more pork myself starting next week.

OK, I give up. I had a cogent point to make about pork historically being favored in the US until after the Civil War, when cheap beef became available ...

Deer farms sound like they could be a moderately good idea. Most white-tailed deer mate in their second year, though some females occasionally mate as young as seven months. Mating occurs between October and December and females are pregnant for 6 and 1/2 months. In her first pregnancy, a female will usually only have one fawn, but after that she may give birth to 2 or 3. Fawns are able to walk at birth. They are nursed several times a day until they are 8 weeks old, after which they begin to add vegetation to their diet. Fawns are weaned by 10 weeks old. A mature deer weighs about 100 to 150 pounds.
I think that would make them breed at about the same rate as sheep, but easier to feed, since they eat wood, and a bit bigger. But they don't produce wool.

We had a drought in the west a couple of years ago. Hay prices soared and herds were culled. The resulting rise in the price of beef was predicted. It will subside over time as herds are replenished.

Wetness in California is tied to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). When sea surface temperatures are anomalously cool in the interior North Pacific and warm along the Pacific Coast, and when sea level pressures are below average over the North Pacific, the PDO has a positive value. Positive PDO means wet in the southwest U.S. and northern Mexico. Negative PDO is tied to some of the worse droughts in California.

Naw, the PDO and its sibling the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) are just facts.
One of the false assumptions underlying the claim of man-made global warming is that the climate would be stable if only man wasn't around. What a bunch of bunk. The climate changes. There is no such thing as a geostasis.
In 2,000 years the current interglacial will end and it will be back to ice age. Maybe scientist can bring back the Woolly Mammoth by then.

I once had a friend who's wife was a vegetarian. Having the social graces of a bear, I proceeded to explain my belief in the philosophy of the social contract and therefore that eating meat was much more virtuous then eating vegetables.
She looked puzzled so I explained that the prohibition against murdering each other was due to a social contract. You respect my life and therefore I respect yours. (BTW, this is the justification for capital punishment). Every animal has killed something else in order to stay alive therefore my steak has forfeited its right to protection under the social contract.
Vegetables on the other hand take CO2 from the air and water and minerals from the earth and mix it with sunlight to live. They are the most virtuous creatures on earth and therefore we have to right to eat them.
My friend pulled me aside and asked me to stop pulling her leg or soon she wouldn't eat anything at all.

"The head of the Diyanet should immediately resign if he cannot account for this," Erdem said on Oct. 5.
"The Diyanet has become a reflection of a paralyzed state order. Is 23 million liras a small amount? Has the lack of that money even caused a slight twinge of conscience in the Diyanet head," he added.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A video of men said to be brothers of a politician assaulting an Egyptian waiter in a restaurant in Jordan's southern port city of Aqaba has sparked outrage.
Security camera footage, widely shared on social media, appears to show MP Zeid al-Shawabka speaking to the waiter on Friday, before three other men throw punches at his head and chase him out of frame.
Some web users have demanded that Shawabka be stripped of his immunity, despite the video not showing him directly taking part in the attack.
News agency Petra quoted police as saying on Monday they had detained "all those who attacked the Egyptian".
Al-Ghad newspaper reported waiter Khaled Othman as saying he thought that the men had hit him because their meal a day earlier had arrived late.
Information Minister Mohammed Momani responded to the uproar on Sunday by saying that Jordan "respects Arab guests on its soil" and that "there are guarantees to allow everyone recourse to justice".
Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians work in Jordan, mostly in construction and agriculture.
