BANNING the humble 60-watt light bulb to make way for so-called energy-saving ones and "help save the planet" was last night exposed as an elaborate EU con.
Tests show production and disposal of the new bulbs uses up more energy than traditional lights. Of course, the evil neocons and tea party people have been saying this for years... Put in seedy politicians since they are still forcing this junk science down our throats.
But hey, look on the bright (heh) side: at least we are cutting down on the amount of mercury emitted by evil coal-burning power plants. And replacing it with mercury in our living rooms.
In this blog, our correspondents consider the fluctuations in the world economy and the policies intended to produce more booms than busts. Adam Smith argued that in a free exchange both parties benefit, and this blog's aim is to encourage a free exchange of views on economic matters. Here's an example of the 'free exchange of views'.
Obama's "American Jobs Act" consists of a hefty $447 billion worth (roughly 3% of GDP) of new and renewed tax cuts and spending that, he hopes, will prevent a fiscal vice from pushing the economy into recession early next year. Its provisions were carefully chosen to stimulate job growth immediately while maximising the political price Republicans will pay to obstruct it. I added the emphasis. Yeah, those evil Pubs and the 48% of the whole country who elected them.
The president sought to make it as difficult as possible for Republicans to obstruct his plans by ensuring each of his proposals had some Republican parentage. For example, the infrastructure bank is modelled on a measure proposed by John Kerry and Kay Bailey Hutchison, Democratic and Republican senators respectively. The US Chamber of Commerce, a fierce opponent of much of Mr Obama's agenda, has been a vocal advocate of more infrastructure spending. The use of unemployment benefits to retrain the jobless is based on a Georgia programme that Republicans have praised.
Nonetheless, there are limits on Mr Obama's appetite and freedom to compromise. His liberal backers threatened to desert him as he repeatedly caved in to Republicans, extending George Bush's tax cuts for me and the wealthy, agreeing to steep spending cuts in return for an increase in the debt ceiling, and just last week delaying new smog rules. His language and tone tonight were combative, at times hectoring. Noting how many Republicans have pledged never to raise taxes, he said, "Now is not the time to carve out an exception and raise middle class taxes. Which is why you should pass this bill right away." We've been to this sermon before!

Obama is campaigning and trolling for votes. Except this time the forum is both chambers of the Congress. What's different in this speech from all the others? He is still singing the praises of his snake oil. If people are still duped by anything he says, God help them and God help the country.
Officials released President Obama's uncle from Plymouth County jail yesterday after holding him for more than two weeks on an immigration detainer for violating an order to return to his native Kenya in 1992. US officials refused to disclose any other information. Although the ICE website confirmed it, Brian P. Hale, an ICE spokesman, said he would not comment on the case because privacy laws and the agency's policies prohibit it. Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, which favors tougher limits on immigration, said the immigration agency should be more transparent, especially in a case involving a relative of the president. She said the public deserves to know the circumstances of Obama's release, since he violated a deportation order and is accused of drunken driving. In a criminal court, she said, that would be public information. "This whole nonsense about privacy is a policy,'' Vaughan said. "It's not the law. It's a choice that [the immigration agency] is making. I think it's very cowardly on [the agency's] part, to be honest. Their behavior shows that they don't want to be accountable to anybody.'' YUP.
This uncle yet another of the president's relatives to fall afoul of immigration laws & get away with it - at least so far. Onyango Obama's younger sister, Zeituni Onyango, violated a deportation order and lived quietly in Boston public housing until days before her nephew's historic election in 2008, when her illegal status was leaked to the media. Based in part on the leak, and her increased exposure, a Boston immigration judge granted her asylum last year. Laws are for little people, unless they have relatives in high office.
President Barack Obama's promise Thursday that everything in his jobs plan will be paid for rests on highly iffy propositions.
It will only be paid for if a committee he can't control does his bidding, if Congress puts that into law and if leaders in the future -- the ones who will feel the fiscal pinch of his proposals -- don't roll it back.
Underscoring the gravity of the nation's high employment rate, Obama chose a joint session of Congress, normally reserved for a state of the union speech, to lay out his proposals. But if the moment was extraordinary, the plan he presented was conventional Washington rhetoric in one respect: It employs sleight-of-hand accounting.
That's the intro. A few graphs later they get down to business.
Essentially, the jobs plan is an IOU from a president and lawmakers who may not even be in office down the road when the bills come due. Today's Congress cannot bind a later one for future spending. A future Congress could simply reverse it.
Currently, roughly all federal taxes and other revenues are consumed in spending on various federal benefit programs, including Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans' benefits, food stamps, farm subsidies and other social-assistance programs and payments on the national debt. Pretty much everything else is done on credit with borrowed money.
So there is no guarantee that programs that clearly will increase annual deficits in the near term will be paid for in the long term.
Indeed. Read the whole thing. Ouch... when you have lost AP, you have lost... um... lefties? Either way, the MSM isn't willing to buy and carry teh 0ne's bullshit anymore.

In related news, the price of his plan keeps rising.
It went from $300 billion to $400 billion to $447 billion in less than 24 hours. If the costs keep rising like this, any payment plan will be meaningless.

Dunno if you folks heard about the massive power outage that hit San Diego yesterday and lasted into the night. The bad news is we couldn't watch the Thursday night football game between Green Bay and New Orleans. The good news is we couldn't watch Bummer either.

He said pass this bill 17 times. There is no bill. And even there were a passed bill, there would not be a thing that happened the next day as Obummer promised. Even if there were a passed bill, there would be no funding for all the grandiose pie-in-the-sky Obama pipe dreams. Sheeeeshhh, we are in trouble.
