[Daily Mail] New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's first deputy counsel is in critical condition Monday morning, after being shot in the head during the pre-dawn festivities for the annual West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn, New York.
Authorities say Carey Gabay, 43, and his brother were walking near Bedford Avenue and Sullivan Place around 3:40am when they passed a group fighting and gunshots rang out.
Gabay was shot in the head by a stray bullet and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. He was just one of four men shot overnight along the parade route.
The West Indian Day Parade - also known as the J'Ouvert Festival - takes place every labor day in the Crown Heights neighborhood in the borough of Brooklyn.
It has a reputation for violence during the parties that are held overnight ahead of the parade. Just last year, three people were shot near the parade route, including one fatality.
'This was a beautiful man, a sweet man, a man who was giving back to his community, a gentleman, who was involved in nothing, just walking down the street with his brother, wife pregnant with his first child,' Gov Cuomo said of Gabay to ABC 7. 'He was the lawyer who rewrote the rent laws that protected so many tenants. I'm going to see him now. It's a reminder that the violence has to stop.'

[BBC] Chad's ex-leader Hissene Habre has been held down by masked security officers in the courtroom at the resumption of his trial for war crimes in the Senegalese capital Dakar.
Mr Habre had to be forcibly brought to court having refused to attend.
He disrupted proceedings, shouting at the clerk who was reading out a list of names of some of his alleged victims.
Mr Habre is accused of ordering the killing of 40,000 people during his rule in the 1980s, charges he denies.

[DAWN] CHARSADDA: Two people were killed in a shootout over a land dispute in Najamabad area of Sar Dheri on Sunday.
Johar Shah, son of Zahir Shah, departed this vale of tears in the hospital while his uncle Amir Shah was killed on the spot in an exchange of fire. Residents said that both families had a dispute over a piece of land.
Before his death Johar Shah told police that he and his father, Zahir Shah, were standing in front of their house when his cousins Falak Sher and Salman Shah, sons of Amir Shah, opened fire on them and as a result he (Johar Shah) received injuries and was brought to the hospital.
He said that his uncle Amir Shah burst out on his sons for firing on them and infuriated by this his son Falak Sher also opened fire on his father, killing him on the spot.
However daughter of Amir Shah in a cross-FIR told the police that she along with her father and brothers Falak Sher and Salman Shah were coming from a doctor when her uncle Zahir Shah and son Johar Shah opened fire on them, leaving her father dead.

Public schools in Dearborn, Michigan, first began offering halal lunches in 2001. That winter, the school district invited "proposals from halal food distributors to provide food at several of its 28 public schools," and began a pilot program. Presently, according to David Mustonen, director of community and public relations for Dearborn Public Schools, "All schools have a halal option five days a week."
Dearborn Heights' Crestwood School District started a halal food pilot program in 2013-14. Last year, Crawford High School in San Diego operated a pilot program offering a halal lunch option twice a week.
Legislators in both New York City and New York State have proposed mandating public schools to serve halal food. In February 2014, New York City Councilman Rafael Espinal introduced a resolution requiring New York City schools "to provide a halal lunch menu option." Three separate bills have been introduced in the New York State Assembly during the current (2015-16) term that would require public schools in big cities to offer halal lunch options. One of them requires that the food be provided to Muslim students "at no cost."

When I was a lad, and lunch milk was two cents (three cents for chocolate!) we were too poor to buy the school lunches, so we had to bring ours in a paper bag. And my Mom quit making my lunch in first grade.
Clearly, that was a millennium ago.

I'm wondering if they also subsidize Kosher meals as well.
If one keeps properly kosher, it's not just the food ingredients, but also the kitchen. So either the food would have to be brought in in sealed portions, or the entire kitchen would have to be koshered and kept so -- basically sterilized, then only kosher ingredients with separate dishes, storage, and prep tools for meat and milk meals. People whose children keep kosher either send them to school with bag lunches from home, or send them to private schools.
