(AKI) - Seven people, including several children, were killed on Friday in a NATO airstrike in the western Afghan province of Farah on the border of Iran. It's predictable by now. Any time a NATO explosive explodes there's a granny lady or a cute little kid or a baby duck in close proximity.
According to Afghan security sources, the target of the attack was the home of a key Taliban commander in the area. There was no immediate comment from the US-led coalition.
More than 500 civilians have been killed during military operations by foreign and Afghan forces against militants so far this year.
The latest attack follows a controversial attack in neighbouring Herat province where the government says more than 90 civilians were killed in a US-led coalition air strike last month. Farah's deputy governor Mohammad Younus Rasooli confirmed the bombing but did not give details of the number of casualties.

Malaysia is sending three navy ships to the coast of Somalia to protect merchant vessels from piracy. The ships, carrying troops and helicopters, are expected to begin patrolling in the Gulf of Aden in the next few days.
Two Malaysian tankers from the shipping line MISC Berhad were seized last month by Somali pirates.
Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak said the ships being deployed would provide protection for five MISC Berhad vessels, and would not launch rescue operations.
By George, somebody gets it. Now if the Malaysian navy sinks a few pirate ships and fills a yardarm or two, it's going to be mighty embarrassing to some Western countries.

Exactly, the Malaysian Navy is going to be protecting Malaysia-flagged ships -- you know, the reasons that navies exist in the first place. Too bad the South Koreans didn't pony up a corvette or two, considering how many of their vessels have gotten seized over there.
They intended to kill as many as possible with their attacks: The so-called Sauerland Cell planned attacks in numerous major German cities, according to the States' Attorney. Targets included Frankfurt, Dortmund , Duesseldorf, Munich , Cologne , and the US base in Ramstein.
Karlsruhe The Federal States' Attorney has revealed details of the complaint against the three accused terrorists of the Sauerland terror group. It states that bombings against American citizens and American installations were intended, which would have caused as many casualties as possible. As targets, the men were considering bars, pubs, discos, and airfields. Among others, probable targets were in Frankfurt/Main, Ramstein, Dortmund, Duesseldorf, Cologne, Stuttgart, and Munich.
The men, two Germans and one Turk, have been accused of membership in a domestic terrorist group which was planning bombings and murders. They were arrested in the Sauerland during September, 2007.
The process against the two Islamic converts Fritz Gelowicz, 29, and Daniel Schneider, 22, as well as against the Turk Adem Yilmaz, 29, will be before the State Superior Court in Duesseldorf. Schneider must also answer to charges of attempted murder of a Police Officer, since he opened fire at an Officer of the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA Federal Criminal Office).
The trio was arrested during a spectacular operation in the town of Medebach-Oberschledorn on 4 September 2007. The men are accused of having planned attacks against US installations on behalf of the Islamischen Dschihad Union (Islamic Jihad Union - IJU) using car-bombs. Shortly before the arrest, investigators covertly exchanged the twelve containers of bomb-building chemicals, in order to mitigate the danger to the population.
For membership in a terrorist association, there is a maximum penalty of ten years.

The Surge? Didn't that start 8 months after the "Anbar Experiment" in which Sunni terrorists were encouraged to work with American interventionists in exchange for $300 each per month? And why did the Sunnis co-operate? Because the Shiites booted them out of most of Baghdad and they chose to preserve what they had left in the Sunni Triangle? Didn't US Field patrols actually decline during the Surge? Isn't the President currently dealing with the Iraq Army's (Shiites that is) move against the Kurds, while their Shiite leader won't let Sunnis into the army? Didn't al-Maliki bring Ahmadinejad to Baghdad in June, and promise him that Iran would not be attacked from Iraq soil? And what should we make of bringing in the Iranians, while al-Maliki is trying to dictate a humiliating withdrawl agreement (SOFA) to President Bush?

Dimwit the Sunnis cooperated because we finally got enoguh troops there to guarantee their protection, and we change our patrols tactics to maintain a constant presence instead of "gopher holing" back to base, and we bought enough time with our blood to adequately train the Iraqi troops to be Iraqis first, and to act like PROFESSIONAL soldiers - by way of example.

Knowing the UCMJ and DOD Directive, this young man is well within his rights. Also knowing the videos of this sort, the right does not resort to FAKE veterans like the left (Jesse MacBeth, etc). Additionally, the success is undeniably, and attributable to the sacrifices made by the troops to close with, engage and destroy the enemy, and to continue to stay in the field, and to do so in sufficient number -- all directly attributable to the surge (more troops, more combat, and change in tactics).

The military doesn't forbid its members from making political statements or engaged in politcal activity. It does forbid campaigning while in uniform or while on duty, or making disparaging remarks of senior civilians whose office placed them in charge of the military.

This was stated by Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee CJCSC General Tariq Majid while talking to visiting German Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung on Friday at Joint Staff Headquarters here. They exchanged views JCSC focusing bilateral ties and regional security environment.
While discussing regional security issues reiterated that a stable Afghanistan is in interest of the region as well as Pakistan, however; Afghan leadership in order to ``cover its own failings in Afghanistan keeps slandering our sincerity with preposterous allegations time and again. Blaming Pakistan's intelligence agencies of recent killings of foreign nationals in Afghanistan is a case in point.''
General Tariq appreciated pragmatic German approach to deal with complex security situation in Afghanistan in activities that lead to Afghanistan's ability to govern itself.
Condemning callous and wanton act by NATO Forces at Angoor Adda CJCSC said such cross border strikes would further alienate locals and would be counter productive. Pakistan reserves the right to appropriately retaliate in future.
On ties between Pakistan and Germany, he called for strengthening relationship to foster enduring and meaningful partnership. Both sides expressed satisfaction over ongoing military to military interaction.

Haven't they been trying to attack retaliate every few days recently, but with catastrophic results?
Intense fighting in the Bajaur tribal district in north Pakistan has forced more than 200,000 people to flee their villages, an International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) official has said.
"There is a real war shaking the Bajaur region at the moment," said Pascal Cuttat, the head of the ICRC Pakistan delegation, with government forces "facing heavy opposition."
Pakistan's forces have launched a number of major military offensives in recent weeks against militants in the Bajaur district, which is thought to be an Al-Qaeda stronghold.
"In the last few weeks, we have a dramatic intensification of the armed conflict which has its flare-ups and this is the most difficult one," Cuttat said during a press briefing in Geneva.
At least 200,000 people have fled their homes in the semi-autonomous Bajaur district near the Afghanistan border in the past three weeks, according to Cuttat.
"About 80 percent of this displaced population was composed of women and children, and a few elderly," he said, while adding that the fugitives left with "literally nothing."
However, the majority of men opted to remain in their homes to protect their belongings and not leave their land during the harvest season, Cuttat said.
A large number of civilians travelled south to Marden and Peshawar, while others have headed north to the Lower Dir district.
Approximately, 14,000 travelled over the border to Afghanistan, fearing the fighting will drag on for a long time, Cuttat said.
The organisation, which fears a spread in diseases such a cholera, has provided drinking water to 50,000 people, as well as health facilities, tents and medicine.
"These displaced people urgently need vital items," Cuttat said.
Pakistani authorities declared a ceasefire during Ramadan, which began at the start of September.

I'm sure there would be quite a bit more interest in giving aid and comfort to the displaced in Pakistan if it weren't such a recurring demand, and if there were sufficient guarantees that the aid would get to those that needed it. The world remembers what happened to 2/3 of the aid sent to Kashmir after the last major earthquake. Most Americans don't have a very high opinion of Pakistan to begin with, and their behavior throughout the world isn't necessarily something that inspires confidence in the country. It's a shame, but it's not terribly unexpected.

Unidentified militants snatched rifles from khasadar (tribal police) personnel, sources said on Friday. The incident took place early morning near a bazaar on the Pak-Afghan highway. Gunmen raided the khasadars' bunker near the Michini checkpost and seized two Kalashnikov rifles from the officials. The khasadars were identified as Shafiullah, Ayub and Arman Shinwari, and were later moved to the Landi Kotal prison. Meanwhile, a rocket hit the Khasadar checkpost at Ziarai Khyber on the Pak-Afghan highway, but caused no injuries.

Members of the Gujar Tribe claimed on Friday to have killed six militants following the attempted kidnap of one of the tribe's spiritual leaders. "The Taliban attempted to kidnap a local fortune-teller, which sparked clashes," witnesses said. According to a report by Pakistan's Geo News, a pilotless airplane launched three missiles on a home in the village of Gorovek in North Waziristan. Three women and four children were reportedly killed while several others were injured.
The attack is the second cross border raid by the US military this week and is certain to fuel the controversial debate about foreign military operations inside Pakistan. NATO helicopter gunships on Wednesday killed 20 people, including women and children, in an attack on a militant stronghold in the Angoor Adda area of South Waziristan, less than two kilometres from the Afghan border.
While the Bush administration declined to comment officially, anonymous officials confirmed that the United States was behind the attack and might conduct similar raids in future if it had "actionable intelligence" about the presence of Al-Qaeda or the Taliban.
Pakistan's Foreign Minister, Mehmood Qureshi, called Wednesday's attack shameful and the government summoned the US ambassador to lodge a strong protest.

One of the elders reportedly warned the US authorities to prepare for assaults on their bases in Afghanistan if they do not stop attacks on Pakistan's northwest border. "If Americans do not stop launching assaults in our tribal regions, we will attack their bases in Afghanistan," tribal elder Malik Ali Muhammad told the protesters. The rally took place in Wana, the main town in South Waziristan, where local officials said at least 15 people died in Wednesday's raid.

I say it's time to take off the gloves and mount a two-pronged effort to take the war to Pashtnistan where there is only a slight Paki writ, and pressure the fledgling government of Mr. TenPercent and let him know he's only getting ten percent of last years military assistance outlay.
Pakistan stopped supplies to the United States and NATO forces in Afghanistan through its western Torkham border on Friday, citing security concerns.
A senior official said the measure followed increasing Taliban threats to trucks carrying the supplies. "All Afghanistan-bound supplies for the International Security Assistance Force have been stopped as the [Torkham] highway is vulnerable," Khyber Agency Political Agent Tariq Hayat told Daily Times, dismissing the impression that the decision is a reaction to continued United States attacks in Waziristan.
"This decision has nothing to do with the situation in Waziristan or the US attacks. This is purely a security issue and we want no untoward incident to take place as far as supplies for ISAF are concerned." The international Torkham Highway was closed for "vulnerable vehicles", he said referring to trucks carrying ISAF supplies, and the supplies would resume after the highway was cleared.
The political agent did not say how long the highway would take to be cleared, but added that other traffic would be allowed on the road.
A senior border official at Torkham, 58 kilometres west of Peshawar, said the closure of the highway would also affect the US forces, which get fuel, food and other military supplies through Torkham crossing points.
The coalition forces also get supplies through the Chaman border in Balochistan, but the bulk of the supplies goes through Torkham -- a shorter route for Kabul where the US and NATO forces are based.

A former Iraqi general under Saddam Hussein turned Defense Ministry adviser was shot dead in broad daylight in central Baghdad Friday, security sources said. Gunmen assaulted Abdel-Amir Hassan Abbas as he was driving his car in the neighborhood of Zayona, pumping bullets into him with a silenced firearm, the security official with the Interior Ministry said. The incident was confirmed by Iraqi military sources. Abbas, a Shiite brigadier general in executed President Saddam Hussein's army, went to work as a civilian consultant for Iraq's Defense Ministry several months ago.

In a secret agreement between Israel and Georgia, two military airfields in southern Georgia had been earmarked for the use of Israeli fighter-bombers in the event of pre-emptive attacks against Iranian nuclear installations. This would sharply reduce the distance Israeli fighter-bombers would have to fly to hit targets in Iran. And to reach Georgian airstrips, the Israeli air force would fly over Turkey.
The attack ordered by Saakashvili against South Ossetia the night of Aug. 7 provided the Russians the pretext for Moscow to order Special Forces to raid these Israeli facilities where some Israeli drones were reported captured.
Details of Israel's involvement were largely ignored by Israeli media lest they be interpreted as another blow to Israel's legendary military prowess, which took a bad hit in the Lebanese war against Hezbollah two years ago. Georgia's top diplomat in Tel Aviv complained about Israel's "lackluster" response to his country's military predicament and called for "diplomatic pressure on Moscow." Sri Lankan troops killed at least 34 separatist Tamil Tiger guerrillas in the latest phase of an advance into rebel-held turf that has produced some of the bloodiest fighting in a decade, the military said on Friday.
After seizing a string of strategic points from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the last two weeks, the army is facing stiff resistance pushing toward the defacto rebel capital of Kilinochchi - a symbolic target. "Troops killed 30 LTTE terrorists and wounded 24 others in Thursday's fighting," a military spokesman who did not give his name in line with policy. He said five soldiers also died and 14 were wounded in the same fighting. The military later said it had recovered four additional rebel bodies.
The rebels were not immediately available to comment on the battlefield casualties. But the pro-rebel website www.tamilnet.com quoted unnamed Tiger officials as saying they had repulsed an army advance and killed at least one soldier. The LTTE also accused the army of firing artillery shells into a civilian area in Kilinochchi and destroying a store.
"The Sri Lanka military, it appears, is ever-ready to treat all stock belonging to Tamils as a threat and does not hesitate to destroy (it)," the LTTE statement said. The military dismissed the claim. "Our target is very clear - the forward defence line of the LTTE," military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said. "We know exactly where the civilians were kept by the LTTE. We don't fire at them."

"If Americans do not stop launching assaults in our tribal regions, we will attack their bases in Afghanistan," tribal elder Malik Ali Muhammad told the protesters. The rally took place in Wana, the main town in South Waziristan, where local officials said at least 15 people died in Wednesday's raid.
