Kabul, Aug. 4: The Afghan government said on Saturday it believed more than 100 Taliban may have been killed in an airstrike in the south of the country and did not rule out civilian casualties. But General Mohammad Zahir Azimi, a defence ministry spokesperson, rejected some media reports that scores of civilians were killed or wounded in the United States-led coalition strike on Thursday in Helmand province.
Mr Azimi said it was unclear how many people had been killed in the attack on a large gathering of Taliban. "But the enemy casualty is very high," he told a press conference in the capital, Kabul. "There might be more than 100 killed."
Hospitals in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand, and in the nearby city of Kandahar, said on Friday that nearly 40 civilians had been brought in for treatment. But Mr Azimi questioned this figure, saying, "Even if there were civilians, there were very few of them. Their number would not reach 10."
He added, "How can you distinguish when someone is a civilian or not? When he has his gun laid on the ground, hes a civilian but when he has it on his shoulder, he is not?" The area had been under aerial surveillance for more than 24 hours before the strike, Mr Azimi said.

It might be possible to peel away some of the bureaucrats in State or the CIA but I think there are several things in favor of the status quo. One at state is that the default personality for a diplomat seems to be pompous turd. To fire a bunch of them would require some normal person to wade into their sewage tank and spend significant time fishing for turds bare-handed, measuring their lenght and tossing out the "keepers." The CIA presents a similar problem except for the filed agents. There is added complexity, though, because the bureaucratic turds have been trained as spies so they are harder to catch being turds. A more appropriate analogy for the CIA might be to fun around the living room with a plastic shopping bag trying to catch somebody's silent-but-deadly.

A day after a prominent newspaper editor was shot to death downtown, the police here on Friday arrested seven men and seized several weapons that they suspected were used in his killing and those of two other men.
Oakland police officials said they suspected that the men were part of a group operating a very violent criminal enterprise out of a neighborhood bakery.
The arrests came after a predawn raid by SWAT teams at the bakery, the Your Black Muslim Bakery, and three bakery-owned properties, where the police found several firearms, including the gun they believe was used to kill the editor, Chauncey Bailey, of the weekly Oakland Post.

Nation of Islam has run parts of Oakland for many years. Lately real Muslims have taken umbrage at their strong arm techniques:
The president of the Yemini American Grocery Association said Saturday that grocers have the right to defend themselves if their stores are invaded like two West Oakland markets were hit Wednesday night.
The association, which represents about 300 store owners in Oakland, Berkeley and Richmond, is not telling grocers to buy guns and shoot, said Mohamad Saleh Mohamad. "But if they have a permit for a gun, they can legally defend themselves."
"The storekeepers are very devastated," Mohamad said. "You would be too if 12 men came into your house or business ... did damage like they did."
"This was a criminal act. It had nothing to do with religion, In this country we have the right to do business. We are selling legal products. The whole community is angry," Mohamad said.
Late Saturday, a group of about 30 Nation of Islam members marched around West Oakland handing out fliers, condemning the violence against the markets.
Among other stores, they passed a new market operated by a Yemini man whose store on Third Street in Richmond was attacked by men in a fashion exactly like the attacks on the two Oakland stores last week.
"They told me not to sell alcohol or they would be back. They didn't come back." The grocer, who asked not to be identified, said the attack ruined his business and he closed the store. His new store does not sell alcohol.
Oakland Deputy Police Chief Howard Jordan, who is heading up the investigation into the attacks on San Pablo Market and Liquor and New York Market, said police expect to make an announcement early this week.
The grocers said police told them they have identified some of the suspects from surveillance camera video at San Pablo Market.
Jordan said investigators are still working to positively identify all of the suspects in the two attacks.
The attackers, wearing suits and bow ties, some carrying clubs, smashed displays and refrigerator units containing alcoholic beverages. They threatened store employees and told them not to sell alcohol to the African-American community.

That's true in Berkeley and elsewhere in the East Bay, too.
A good number of years ago Mr. Lotp grew up in the Bay area at the top of the hill on a winding street. For the sake of integration etc. he was assigned to newly devised school district that started in the rundown flats and ran up the hill. I.e. he was sent to classes in Richmond, where the Black Panthers originally organized.
After a year of being threatened, beaten up by a gang of 5 or 6 at a time and shaken down for his lunch money, he cut a deal with a different gang: for a smaller, but regular, fee paid to them instead he would go unscathed over the next 2 years. His money was good, they hated the offending gang anyway and kept their word & before he turned 17 he was out of there and off to college.
Or so the story went the one time I heard it ... ;-)

Police have definitely linked a shotgun siezed during four raids as being the weapon used to murder Bailey. The gun was found on the premises of Your Black Muslim Bakery along with evidence of the murder plot.
At the makeshift memorial set up near the slaying site a hand lettered sign reads:
"Yet another good positive black voice silenced by a negative black hand, will I be next? Brother?"
As always, Muslims do what they do best and that is kill their own kind. Rest assured that the Oakland Post is working hard to decipher all of Bailey's notes and computer entries. Volunteers have bolstered the usual staff of eleven to over one hundred people as they chase down leads in an effort to break the story that Bailey was working on at the time of his slaying. Since this was premeditated murder with the special circumstances of laying in wait and using a firearm in the commission of a crime, Bailey's killers had better be headed for some quality time with Mister Needle.

Based on news accounts of the last murder, the order to kill was probably given to numerous Muslims. That makes the group a criminal organization, like CAIR.
For anyone who doesn't know, Black Muslims believe that 5000 years of "white rule" is about to end. Elijah Muhammed said that space ships full of dynamite would destroy white governments, and set the stage for 5000 years of black world leadership. That sort of leaves the Arabs out of the Islamic picture.

I'm guessing the FBI has been all over this case from the moment the body was found. Ever since John Allen Mohammed and his boy Malvo went on that I-95 killing spree in 2002, they've been looking out for the fringe-y Nation of Islam spinoffs who are eager to advance the spaceship action with a little pre-emptive killing in the name of Allah or whoever.
At a guess, and looking back over earlier articles about that bakery, the NOI types there decided the main NOI isn't being proactive enough ... and in particular wasn't shaking down the locals hard enough in the name of enforcing purity.
Oakland's actually a lot better now than it was in the 80s and 90s, but in some neighborhoods groups like this have pretty much taken over from the police and other authorities.

I prefer "Equal Opportunity" to "Affirmative Action" and believe that the two are mutually exclusive. But, in any case, I doubt if anybody is going to scream about racist white pigs when these cops do their job. As Odysseus said, this is not the Sixties. Clashes between inmates of Badoush detention camp, east of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, and the Multi-National Force (MNF) left a detainee killed and two others injured Friday. The riots erupted in the heavy punishment cell when wardens and an MNF unit got into there to take some detainees to the gallows, an Iraqi police source told KUNA. The inmates resisted the orders of the wardens and set fire to some furniture, prompting the MNF troops to use tear gas, live ammunition and rubber bullets to put down the riots. The clashes killed one detainee and killed two others, according to the source.
NABLUS, West Bank - Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian terrorist militant during a raid in the West Bank city of Nablus on Friday, local residents and the Israeli army said.
The troops killed the terrorist militant as he tried to escape when a special forces unit surrounded a house and called on him to surrender, an army spokesman said.

Local residents named the terrorist militant as Rael Abu Al Adas, a member of the Islamic Jihad group.
The army spokesman said another terrorist militant was arrested and that the troops found a number of pipe bombs and other weapons in the house.

4 huge explosions rocked the Qussaya base of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine - General Command , in the eastern Bekaa valley east of Beirut. The explosions shook the whole region. Either PFLP stacked their ammo rather carelessly, or Leb Army is getting better all the time. I am aware that PFLP is not involved in the current conflict directly, but I would not put it past the possibilities that they may join the fray at some point if they see an advantage. An ounce of prevention (well apparently a tad more than that) is worth a ton of cure.

Has Halliburton gotten that chemical resonance projector working, then? That's the one that projects vibrations that will cause certain explosive chemicals to resonate, then explode. Where will they use it next - the Litani valley, perhaps? Wonder if it's airborne, satellite-based, or truck mounted...
