MOBILE, Ala. -- 7/29/08: Mobile Police just released more details about a murder case, involving a woman's body found in a freezer.
Investigators believe the victim was Arletha Hopkins, the wife of the suspect, Anthony Hopkins. A woman's body was found last night in a chest-type freezer at the couple's home on Ryland Street.
Police say the body was covered in a sheet. It appears to have been in the freezer for several years. Investigators say the discovery was finally made when one of the children accused Anthony Hopkins of sexual abuse. The child told police about the body. There were six other children in the home. They have been taken into protective custody.

rj, there are BIG alligators around Mobile. I was working there in 1983 and there was this bar we went to that had a deck overlooking one of the river channels. There was a big gator that we named Izod that we fed marshmallows to. One day the owner told us we couldn't feed Izod any more because Izod saw his brand new white tennis shoes and chased the owner across the parking lot.

Time for another exciting episode of "Name That Party!!"
After lecturing a federal prosecutor for adhering "heartlessly" to a cold version of bureaucratic justice, a federal judge on Tuesday sentenced former Mayor Sharpe James of Newark to 27 months in prison for failing to disclose his romantic relationship with a woman whom he helped to get a lucrative deal on some city-owned land.
Former Newark Mayor Sharpe James entered the federal courthouse in Newark, N.J., to be sentenced on corruption charges on Monday. United States District Judge William Martini also ordered Mr. James to pay a $100,000 fine.
Mr. James's former mistress, Tamika Riley, was sentenced to 15 months in prison and ordered to pay $27,000 in restitution to the city.

When you think about corrupt state government, where's the first place that comes to mind? For me, in a close race it's Jersey, followed closely by Louisiana with Massachusetts coming up on the outside...

Jomock Platypus9662, having lived for years in two of those states (NJ, MA) you aren't far off. But, the other state in which I lived for a significant period probably edges out MA for 3rd.
The great state of OBAMAGASM (aka IL) is number 3 on my list behind NJ & LA.

That's the slogan, more or less, of New Zealand's Martin Jetpack company, which debuted its $100,000 personal flight apparatus Tuesday at the Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture show in Oshkosh, Wis.
As thousands looked on, inventor Glenn Martin's 16-year-old son donned a helmet, fastened himself to a prototype and revved the engine, which sounded like a motorcycle.

The one or two news clips I've seen of this thing seem to indicate that it is not directionally stable. I wouldn't like to be involved in the mess from a 15 mph lateral crash.

I saw it's maiden "Flight" 3 feet off the ground and stabilised by two helpers holding it steady.
It's obviously top-heavy and very unstable.
I classify it as "Nice first attempt, needs much more work".

Though it was most notorious, much of their drug humor on their audio recordings was subtext, sometimes not figuring at all. Only with their movies did it come front and center.
Some of their most raucous and popular skits didn't even mention drugs, like Sister Mary Elephant, Earache My Eye, Championship Wrestling, The Other Tapes, Hey Margaret, and Basketball Jones.

"Born in East LA" was pretty good, but no Tommy in it as I recall. Other than that, "Up In Smoke" (With Stacy Keach turning into an Iguana) was about their best.
(Xinhuanet) -- Patrons of a German nude beach on the Polish border say beachgoers on the other side of the border come to stare at the exposed skin. Ines Muller, a German naturist, said Poles come fully clothed to the beach on their side of the border and stare at the nude swimmers and sunbathers, The Sun reported Monday. "You feel like an ape in the zoo. The Poles come with their binoculars, stare and swear," Muller said.
An ape in the zoo? For sunbathing in your birthday suit at a public beach? Reeeeaalllly? Zounds.
Beach patrons said there used to be a fence separating the German and Polish beaches, but it was torn down as part of a 2007 agreement between the countries. "It's a nudist beach. It's terrible that the Poles come over dressed and stare," said German Elke Bernholz.
Some Poles said the proximity of the two beaches annoys them as much as it does the Germans. "It's horrible -- we would never bathe naked, we are Catholic," said one beach-going Pole from the town of Swinemunde.
"But we don't mind looking!" he added.

A few weeks ago I was talking to a young lady who said that when she was 8 or 9 she went to visit family in Germany. She ended up going to the beach. She said she was scarred for life looking at all the old saggy baggy nudists.

Anyone bathing in the Baltic or going naked at its shores should be declared terminally insane.

For some reason, Germans have a weird fascination with apes. It was noticed by the artist George Grosz, and can be seen to this day in their zoos, where there is usually a crowd several deep to see the ape house.

TRUCKER'S LAMENT: I JUST DON'T LOOK GOOD NAKED ANYMORE)
(Sheb Wooley / Dick Feller)
I stepped outta the shower and I gotta good look at myself
Pot belly, bald head, man, I thought I was somebody else
I caught my reflection in the mirror on the back of my bathroom door
I just don't look good naked anymore

Nudism has absolutely nothing to do with "looking". Nudists just enjoy the sun and the sea. There's nothing sexual about it. That's why it doesn't matter how you look like.
Nudists don't stare at each other. Only clothed people stare and nudists (and hope to find a pretty chick).

Police are hunting a driver who wrecked a £250,000 Lamborghini after "downing" pints of cider in a pub.
The man and a group of friends turned up at a pub driving three Lamborghini Murcielagos and a £137,000 Bentley Continental. While allegedly drinking pints of strong cider, they told fellow drinkers they had been to a wedding reception and had hired the cars for £5,000 each, driving them at speeds of up to 160mph.

ARMUCHEE, Ga. - A six-legged deer found in north Georgia after being attacked by a dog has a new home. An Athens woman with a permit to keep unique animals in captivity has agreed to take the unusual deer. The animal was found July 18 near Armuchee and underwent surgery to repair its minor injuries.
Berry College animal science professor George Gallagher took the deer after its surgery.
The National Treasury is investigating the introduction of a tax on carbon-dioxide emissions as part of South Africa's voluntary commitment to climate change mitigation - government speak for: finally business (and consumers) in SA will be forced to curb its CO2 outputs. This is good news! There was also a suggestion of incentives and a future cap-and-trade mechanism by Van Schalkwyk, who gave a briefing in Cape Town outlining the climate policy a couple of days ago.
Two new polio cases have been confirmed in Pakistan, bringing the total number of sufferers of the crippling disease in the country to 20 this year, health officials said on Tuesday.
"The parents had refused to give vaccination drops to their son."
The first of the latest cases was confirmed in Nawagai village in the restive Bajaur tribal district in a 16-month-old boy, and the second was detected in a 10-month-old boy in southwestern Balochistan. "A case of P3 polio virus has been confirmed in Nawagai. The parents had refused to give vaccination drops to their son," district support officer Hameedur Rehman told reporters. Bajaur is one of seven Pakistani tribal areas where many locals believe polio vaccinations are intended to reduce the Muslim population.

New research shows Bangladesh may not be as vulnerable to rising sea levels caused by climate change as previously feared, scientists in Dhaka say. They say satellite images show the country's landmass is actually growing because of sediment dumped by rivers.
A report by UN scientists has projected that rising sea levels will inundate 17% of Bangladesh by 2050, making about 30 million people homeless. One its authors said he saw little in the new research to change his mind.
Don't bother him with facts ...
Satellite images of Bangladesh over the past 32 years show that the country is growing annually by about 20 square kilometres (12.5 square miles), said Maminul Haque Sarker of the Dhaka-based Centre for Environment and Geographic Information Services. This was due, he said, to the billion tonnes of sediment that the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and 200 other rivers bring from the Himalayas each year before crossing Bangladesh.

"The rate at which sediment is deposited and new land is created is much slower than the rate at which climate change and sea level rises are taking place," he said.
And the evidence for this is ???

He said that many people living along the coast had observed that sea levels where higher now than in their grandparents' day.
That is called erosion. Has nothing to do with sea level rise.

actually the sea level has been rising for the past 20k years
The total rise during the 20th century was about 1 or 2 feet so this might be observable at a village where everybody lives in the same house for generations in some place with minimal tidal flux.

BAGHDAD, July 29 -- Two Iraqi athletes will be allowed to participate in the Beijing Olympics after a last-minute pledge by the Iraqi government Tuesday not to interfere politically in the country's Olympic movement.
The agreement reversed a decision last week by the International Olympic Committee to ban Iraq from competing because of allegations that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had compromised the independence of the national Olympic committee. The government dissolved the panel in May and replaced it with a new group headed by a cabinet minister.
But after negotiations between Iraqi officials and the international committee at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, the government agreed to reestablish an independent committee and hold transparent elections for it by November, Olympic officials said. They added that five government representatives could attend the Beijing Games as observers. "We look forward to seeing the Iraqi flag in Beijing," the president of the international committee, Jacques Rogge, said in a statement.
