[BBC] Adrian Cronauer, who served as inspiration for Robin Williams' breakout character in the 1987 film Good Morning, Vietnam, has died in Virginia aged 79.
Like his eponymous character, Cronauer was a radio presenter in Saigon in 1965 and 1966 known best for his enthusiastic early morning greeting and penchant for playing rock'n'roll tunes to raise American troops' morale during the Vietnam War.
But Hollywood took a lot of liberties in its depiction of the air force sergeant.
Cronauer was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in September 1938, to a steelworker father and teacher mother.
A keen broadcast fan throughout his life, he landed a semi-regular slot on local children's television aged just 12.
After enrolling in his home city's university in the 1950s, he helped found a student radio station and worked with local broadcasters throughout his studies in Pittsburgh and later in Washington.
Cronauer joined the US air force, doing his training in San Antonio and Wichita Falls, Texas. His first deployment was to the island of Crete in Greece - where he spent a year-and-a-half and developed his signature radio greeting.
He told the Fayetteville Observer in 2011 that his initially timid "Good Morning, Iraklion" gradually became "wilder and wilder" into the dramatic, booming and protracted form he would become notorious for in Vietnam.
Keen to travel, Cronauer says he actually volunteered for a transfer to Vietnam, where he was hired initially as a news director for Armed Forces Radio there.
After his morning presenter left, he took up the 06:00 Dawn Buster show mantle, greeting troops with an enthusiastic yell of: "GOOOOOOOOD morning, Vietnam!"

The movie was funny ... but as for portraying the real operations of a military radio station? Some day, when I have oodles of time and nothing else to do, I may fisk it down to the sub-atomic level.
Good Morning, Vietnam came out when I was stationed in Spain - and all the AFRTS staff went to see it in the base theater, and were kind of disappointed in the inaccuracies, and in that among us, we knew of far wilder, grosser, funnier things which happened in the studios of stations we had worked in.

[Orlando Sentinel] "Python!" Donna Kalil, seated in a homemade tower atop her 1998 Ford Explorer, yelled the golden word after spotting a familiar black and brown pattern among the grassy brush of the Everglades.
The car stopped, and Kalil barreled towards the water’s edge with one goal in mind: catching the 10-foot Burmese python lying on the bank.
Kalil snatched the snake by the head, and its long, muscly body wrapped around her arm. It was Thursday night, and this was the third python Kalil had caught in two days. I don't recall Ross ever milking a python.
[Breitbart] Fox News star Kimberly Guilfoyle is leaving the cable network to join the America First Action Super PAC that supports President Donald Trump for president.
A source close to Guilfoyle confirmed reports to Breitbart News.
Guilfoyle has worked for Fox News for 12 years and is a co-host of The Five.
"FOX News has parted ways with Kimberly Guilfoyle," a spokesperson for Fox News confirmed in a statement to Breitbart News.
Guilfoyle is currently dating Donald Trump Jr. after his wife Vanessa filed for divorce in March. In a recent interview on Breitbart News Daily, she praised Trump Jr. as "number one up-and-coming political figure on the right."
"I’ve seen him at these political rallies, and I went to Montana with him, and I’ve known him for over a decade and saw him at the convention speech," she said. "He commands the room. He’s a compelling political figure." A rather sudden and unceremonious departure.

#2 Yes, a slow death in progress for Fox. We need an alternate news source. Most of the programming is drama fake, propagandized and manipulated news. Should this be realized a tremendous response from the public support would ensue. Rush is an example and Trump rallies. Liberal media has been dying for years. People are just not watching their circus.

Well, bye Fox News. I would sometimes watch The Five only to catch Kimberly, really. And she looked good too. I catch clips of Tucker, the only other one I like. I like Fox Business much better.
The sons who took over are revolting. They will kill the channel, and laugh while doing it.

[News Channel 8] CLEARWATER, Fla. An argument about a handicapped parking space led to a deadly shooting outside a Clearwater convenience store Thursday that was witnessed by the deceased man's 5-year-old son.
No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Detectives are investigating to determine if the case meets the criteria of Florida's Stand Your Ground law.
Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office detectives say 24-year-old Britany Jacobs was driving her 2016 Chrysler 2000 when she pulled into the Circle A Food Store located at 1201 Sunset Point Road, and parked in a handicapped parking space outside the business.

[RT] The first families of Boers, descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa, could soon be moving to Russia to escape rising violence against farmers. Some 15,000 Boers want to leave South Africa and become farmers in Russia.
The Schlebusch family from South Africa’s Bloemfontein is going to be among first 50 Boer families to settle in Russia’s southwest. Like many other Boers, they are seeking political asylum in Russia. They say they are facing violent attacks and death threats at home stemming from government plans to expropriate their land.
Earlier this month, farmer Adi Schlebusch visited Russia’s farmbelt Stavropol Region. Schlebusch, whose grandfather was murdered at his farm, told RT that the land in South Africa “was never taken by whites from blacks with violence or in an unjust manner.” He explained that when Boers moved to South Africa in the 19th century, they tried to act in a way that was fair, to negotiate officially and to avoid conflict.

This has been going on for years there. Many forced to leave everything behind to get away. These are hard working industrious people. The blacks here are purchasing land there to farm and when the land is exhausted they plan to develop properties. When the food is gone what then. Short-term thinking. My source was a darkly complected chap doing exactly that.

[DAWN] British police believe they have identified the suspects who carried out the Novichok nerve agent attack on a former Moscow double agent and his daughter and that they are Russian, the Press Association news agency reported on Thursday.
"Investigators believe they have identified the suspected perpetrators of the Novichok attack through CCTV and have cross-checked this with records of people who entered the country around that time," a source with knowledge of the investigation told PA.
"They [Sherlocks] are sure they [suspects] are Russian," the source added.
Scotland Yard police headquarters refused to comment on the report.
Ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia collapsed in the southwestern English city of Salisbury on March 4 after being exposed to the nerve agent Novichok. Both have since recovered.

[PRESSTV] Hondurans have clashed with police in the capital Tegucigalpa during a protest against rising fuel prices.
Public transport workers, taxi drivers and university students took part in the protest on Thursday. They denounced vehicle circulation fees.
The protest turned violent when police fired tear gas and water cannons at the demonstrators, who were throwing rocks at officers.
All units of public transport, buses, taxis and mototaxis, went on strike on Thursday, after transport managers and representatives of the Honduras Institute of Land Transport (Instituto Hondureno del Transporte Terrestre/IHTT) failed to come to an agreement over rising fuel prices.
Fuel now costs about $3.74 (€3.21) a gallon in Honduras.
"The increase in both fuel and [vehicle] circulation taxes. We cannot cope with all of this, all of this is a blow to our pockets," a taxi driver said.
Another taxi driver said, "They should support us because this is of interest not only to us, taxi drivers and bus drivers. Instead, it is of interest to everyone."
A retired worker said, "Fuel consumption is connected to the cost of food, the cost of living, and that is a necessity."

[PRESSTV] South Korea’s foreign minister says North Korea has shown a "clear commitment" to complete denuclearization amid attempts by the United States to pressure Pyongyang.
"They have made a clear commitment on complete denuclearization repeatedly, and of course very forcefully at the Singapore summit with [US] President [Donald] Trump, and we will hold them up to that commitment," Kang Kyung-Wha said Friday.
She made the remarks ahead of a meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and members of the United Nations ...an idea whose time has gone... Security Council in New York.
Diplomats said they expected Pompeo to urge the Council to maintain a firm stance toward Pyongyang and keep sanctions in place.
In June, President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un ...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished... held a historic summit in Singapore where the two agreed to "work toward denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula.
After Pompeo’s third trip to North Korea earlier this month, Pyongyang complained of Pompeo’s "gangster-like" demands on rapid denuclearization.

[Breitbart] Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told members of Congress in a private meeting this week that the recent NATO summit was "one of the most productive" he has ever attended.
The comment came during a breakfast on Wednesday with a group of Republican and Democrat members of Congress, according to sources familiar with the meeting.
Chief Pentagon spokesperson Dana White, when asked if that was in line with his thinking, responded, "Definitely."
The private comments contradict how the NATO summit has been broadly portrayed in the mainstream news media. Reports portrayed Trump as having accomplished little other than upsetting allies and weakening the military alliance.
"NATO is still reeling from the president’s blunt-force attack on the decades-old military alliance," Vanity Fair reported a day after it ended.
NBC News reported that Pentagon leadership had directed military leaders to do "damage control" just hours after Trump left Brussels, which Mattis immediately dismissed as "fiction."

[Breitbart] Senate Democrats, led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), are demanding documents, perhaps up to one million pages of them, spanning Kavanaugh’s career......
According to Politico, McConnell told Capitol Hill Republicans at meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday if the left persisted in these requests, he would delay the vote on Kavanaugh until late October or November, forcing vulnerable red state Democrats to vote up or down on Kavanaugh just before voters go to the polls. McConnell, by the same reports, reiterated his preference for a vote before the Senate’s October recess, which would allow Kavanaugh to take his seat before the opening of the Supreme Court’s main 2018-2019 session.

[DAWN] Indian police were holding six men on Thursday after a Russian tourist was allegedly drugged and gang-raped in a popular southern tourist town, officials said.
Media reports said the 21-year-old had bite marks on her face and arms when she was found naked and unconscious on the floor of her hostel room early on Monday.
"Six men have been detained over the rape and drugging of the woman," investigating officer Mangayar Karasi said.
The woman, who was travelling on her own, had arrived in the town of Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu state, 190 kilometres from Chennai, on last Thursday.
Those in jug included the hostel manager and her tourist guide, who told police he found her on the floor hours after they had consensual sex, another investigator said.
She said the woman was being treated in hospital for a drug overdose and minor injuries, with efforts being made to record her statement. The medical report has confirmed sexual assault, the officer said.

[DAWN] The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday issued notices to chief of his own faction of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Maulana Fazlur Rehman, former National Assembly speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Pervez Khattak for using indecent language during their election campaigns.
In its notices, the ECP deplored abusive, insolent and derogatory language used against other leaders that has been aired and published by the electronic and print media, besides doing the rounds on social media.
Pointing out that this was a clear violation of the code of conduct issued by it, the ECP asked the three political leaders to desist from the tendency and summoned them to appear before the commission on July 21 (Saturday).

[DAWN] WhatsApp announced limits on Friday on the forwarding of messages by its 200 million Indian users in an effort to stop a spate of horrific lynchings and to assuage government threats of legal action in its biggest market. ... on the principle that it's better to be murdered by a mob of thirty than by a mob of 300.
More than 20 people have been butchered by crazed mobs in the past two months across India after being accused of child kidnapping and other crimes in viral messages circulated wildly on WhatsApp.
Late Thursday, India's government, scrambling to find a response, threatened to take WhatsApp to court, saying the "medium" for spreading malicious rumours "cannot evade responsibility and accountability".
"If (WhatsApp) remain mute spectators they are liable to be treated as abettors and thereafter face consequent legal action," the information technology ministry said.
The Facebook-owned firm responded on Friday with an announcement it will test limiting the ability to forward messages and cap at five the number of contacts or groups that messages can be forwarded to.

"LOS ANGELES (AP) ‐ Paramount says it has fired the head of its television division for making unspecified comments that drew complaints from employees.
Paramount Pictures CEO Jim Gianopulos wrote in a memo Thursday that Amy Powell had been fired for making comments that were "inconsistent with company values." You mean like the values it takes to dangle "Star Trek Beyond" in front of an unsuspecting public?
The memo did not elaborate on the nature of the statements or where they were made, beyond stating they were said in a "professional setting."
The memo said numerous employees complained about Powell’s behavior, and the decision to fire her was made in agreement with the company’s legal and human resources departments.
A message sent to Powell was not immediately returned. She joined Paramount in 2004 and became president of its television division five years ago.
Under her leadership, Paramount supplied shows including "13 Reasons Why" and "The Alienist" to cable and streaming outlets."
From another source: "Specifically, insiders familiar with her firing said the executive made insensitive remarks about black women and anger I don't believe they are mutually exclusive.
during a recent conference call about an upcoming TV show based on the 1996 movie "The First Wives Club." Now there's something to fire her for.
