[NEWS.YAHOO] Race leader Chris Froome was doused with urine by a spectator as a fresh scandal engulfed the Tour de La Belle France on Saturday.
The incident overshadowed what had been a historic first victory for Stephen Cummings and his South African MTN-Qhubeka team on Nelson Mandela Day.
Froome hit out at certain media for "irresponsible reporting" of his and his Sky team's success on the Tour so far, blaming them for setting the "tone" that led to Saturday's attack.
Speaking after the 178.5km 14th stage from Rodez to Mende, Froome pulled no punches.
"A spectator about 50-60km into the race threw a cup of urine over me, shouting 'dope' (doped)," said Froome.
"It's unacceptable on so many levels. We're professionals, we work really hard for what we do and for someone to come and do that, it's not what we're here for."

A few years ago some moron tossed fifty + tacks onto the road, about twelve riders got flats. Since there's so much open space, it's difficult to impossible to prevent this kind of thing from happening.
[DAWN] SAHIWAL: A duty doctor at the DHQ hospital emergency ward allegedly beat up a junior colleague "for not prescribing medicines of a certain pharmaceutical company to patients." In Pakistain having an uncontrolled temper is a sign of manliness.
Dr Umair and his two companions thrashed Dr Asad as he delayed checking blood pressure of a patient. An eyewitness said Dr Umair slapped Dr Asad which led to a scuffle. The paramedics on duty intervened and got the matter resolved.
On learning about the incident, Assistant Professor Dr Muntazir Mehdi rushed to the emergency ward and on inquiry learnt that Dr Umair wanted his subordinate to prescribe medicines of a certain pharmaceutical company to patients but he refused.
"Only because of my refusal to heed Dr Umar's advice, he and his three fellows tortured me," alleged Dr Asad.
As assistant professor questioned Dr Umair about the incident, he first tried to clear his position and then lost his cool and scuffled with him. The eyewitness claimed that Dr Umair, along with his two friends Usman and Tanvir, gave a beating to the assistant professor as well. Dr Umair later expeditiously departed at a goodly pace.

The war train Zaamurets was the behemoth of the 1910s and 1920s.
Heavily armored. Bristling with guns. Everywhere it went, Zaamurets was the biggest, baddest thing around. Not many foes could touch it. If you possessed this train, you ruled the rails of early 20th-century Eurasia.
Even more stunning, this awesome, self-propelled war machine went on a journey across the world. The years-long voyage carried the train through Ukraine, Russia and Chinaâ‐âillustrating the chaos and uncertainty of the era. The leviathan served in Tsarist, Bolshevik, Czech, White Russian and several Chinese armies.
Which is why everyone wanted it.

[Zero Hedge] Fifteen years after Vladimir Putin first walked into the Kremlin, Russia's army is bigger, stronger, and better equipped than at any time since the end of the Cold War. Able to call on three quarters of a million frontline troops, The Telegraph reports, with more tanks than any other country on the planet, and the world's third largest air force, Russia retains much of the brute force associated with a former superpower. But it has also rapidly modernised, spending millions on rearmament and retraining programmes aimed at professionalising the lumbering, conscript-reliant force it inherited from the Soviet Union. The latest effort, as Reuters reports, Putin has ordered the creation of a new reserve armed force as part of steps to improve training and military readiness at a time of international tensions with the West over Ukraine.
[The National Interest] World War II was the most destructive war in human history. Consider that, a conservative estimate of World War II fatalities is 60 million people, or roughly 3 percent of the world's population at the time.
Yet, to an even greater extent than World War I, the outcome of World War II seemed to merely plant the seeds for another great power conflict. The battlelines were drawn when the Soviet Union created an Iron Curtain stretching across most of Central and Eastern Europe, while the United States led an alliance system throughout the western half of the continent.
For the next four and a half decades, military officers in the United States and the Soviet Union would create and tinker with plans to fight a NATO-Warsaw Pact war. For the United States, this meant seeking in vain to offset the Soviet Union's numerical advantages without resorting to nuclear weapons early in a conflict.
Although successive U.S. administrations came into office vowing to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in America's military doctrine, this proved impossible before the Reagan administration, when the revolution in precision-guided weaponry offered Washington a way to defeat the Soviet military juggernaut.
Although the Soviet Union's specific war plans, like America's, remains classified, historians have been able to more or less ascertain how the Soviet army would have fought by using archives released by former Warsaw Pact member states like Poland and Czechoslovakia.

NATO's ridiculous ideas on how the war would work out (Soviet tanks pouring across the border, NATO retreating and commanders clamoring for the release of nuclear weapons, badly needed supply convoys crossing the Atlantic) was a total joke. The Soviets only had one plan: use 90% of its nukes in the first hour of war. Then, drive forward until they got to the Spanish border.

I believe we saw the ability of the Soviet army in the suppression of Chechnya. It really didn't go well. For decades the failure of Soviet proxies was always blamed on the 'monkeys', to use Russian terminology. That rationale was wiped away in the early debacle of the Chechnya operations. I don't think NATO would have allowed the Soviets the breather they had in that operation to get their act together.

[ALMANAR.LB] A revamped Greek government took over Saturday in an effort to enforce a third bailout accompanied by tough fiscal reforms opposed by a sizeable section of the ruling Syriza party.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Friday reshuffled his administration to fill the vacancies left by three cabinet members who were sacked after voting against the reforms in parliament last week.
Tsipras faced down a mutiny from his party in parliament last week, with over 30 of his 149 politicians refusing to approve the package of tax hikes, pension reform and privatizations demanded by lenders.
Greece must approve a second batch of banking and justice-related reforms on Wednesday to qualify for a three-year bailout of up to 86 billion euros ($94 billion).

[DAWN] The Supreme Court is likely to take up on July 23 an application accusing the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of misleading the court by presenting an evasive list of 150 mega scandals.
The application, filed by Dr M. Shafiq-ur-Rahman, alleged that the list submitted to the court was not based on facts.
A two-judge bench, headed by Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja, indicated that it would issue notices to NAB after going through the application during Eid vacations.
On July 13, NAB had submitted an amended list of 150 mega scandals -- 50 cases each of financial scam, land scam and abuse of power. Of them, 71 cases in three categories are in the inquiry stage and 41 in investigation, while 38 references have been filed and are pending in different accountability courts.
The list contained the names of top politicians, babus bureaucrats and businessmen, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf... , Punjab 1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots.... Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif ...Pak dynastic politician, brother of PM Nawaz Sharif, chief minister of Punjab... , former prime ministers Raja Pervez Ashraf, Yousuf Raza Gilani ... Pakistain's former prime minister, whose occasional feats of mental gymnastics could be awe-inspiring ... and Chaudhry Shujaat Ahmed and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.
In his application, a copy of which has also been submitted to NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry, Dr Shafiq alleged that the bureau officials had apparently concealed the names of "real offenders" to save them from accountability. "Such kind of screening is always mala fide and can conveniently be considered obstruction in the process of justice," he said.

[Breitbart] An edgy New York designer has created a truly revolutionary work. Allow me to introduce, the "clutch," designed to save women from "manspreading" -- which is one the greatest threats to gender relations of the 21st century, according "fourth wave" feminists.
The bags (which retail for between $160.00 and $895.00) have been lapped up by the world's feminist elite, with Beyoncé and members of Russian feminist protest band, Pussy Riot, posing on Instagram with the accessory.
If you're wondering, though, Manspreading is the deplorable act of men sitting comfortably on public transport, whereby they position their legs in such a way as to not restrict blood passing to their nether region, which feminists insist is "an expression of patriarchal authority."
The "manspreading" campaign gained significant traction and celebrity backing at the beginning of this year. At first, many considered it a joke, but it escalated to a point where it was made an "offence" on the NYC subway, with a $50 fine attacked.
And then, at the beginning of June, reports emerged that two men had actually been arrested and charge for "manspreading." Breitbart London's Milo Yiannopoulos takes a slightly different view:
"The manspreading complaint is couched as a response to "rudeness" by men, but it is no such thing: it is pathetic feminist pipsqueakery, the last dying gasp of a movement with nothing to win and nothing to say, determined to abuse and antagonise the male sex at all costs and for whatever perceived or outright imaginary infraction it can conjure from the vicissitudes of everyday life. It is offensively trivial, and those associated with it ought to be ashamed," he wrote earlier this year.
Around 300 KKK members are protesting the removal of Confederate flag from South Carolina's statehouse
But 400 New Black Panther Party members are opposing them, and slam the flag removal as 'illusion of progress'
Police out in force to ensure the groups stay well apart, no weapons are allowed within 250 feet of the statehouse
The opposing rallies come a month after racist 21-year-old Dylann Roof shot dead 9 black people in Charleston

Important detail: Both of these groups were out-of-staters. The Klan were from North Carolina, the Black Panthers from Florida.

I've been looking for articles reminding us that it is only a tiny minority of extremists who view the Confederate flag as a celebration of racism, and that Roof was actually only angry at a lack of opportunities for young men like him. Musta missed 'em.
