Two of the gunnies were later rubbed out and 10 hostages freed, but five other attackers were thought to remain inside, according to Captain Mohammed Hussein.
At least nine people were killed and several maimed in the initial attack, most of them young men entering the popular Pizza House restaurant when the vehicle went kaboom!, Hussein said, adding that attackers had cut off electricity to complicate security forces' efforts to end the siege
The gunnies "were dressed in military uniforms. They forced those fleeing the site to go inside" the restaurant, eyewitness Nur Yasin told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named.

Last year, al-Shabaab became the deadliest Islamic holy warrior group in Africa, with more than 4,200 people killed in 2016, according to the Washington-based Africa Center for Strategic Studies.

[DAWN] Two "high-profile bad boys" of the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi ... a 'more violent' offshoot of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain. LeJ's purpose in life is to murder anyone who's not of utmost religious purity, starting with Shiites but including Brelvis, Ahmadis, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Rosicrucians, and just about anyone else you can think of. They are currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of al-Qaeda ... (LJ) beat feet fromBloody Karachi ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... ’s central prison in one of the most daredevil moves in recent months by the inmates of the jail, officials and sources said on Wednesday.
The prison was claimed to be safeguarded heavily after multiple operations to foil escape attempts including the October 2014 operation by the Rangers to find a 45-metre-long tunnel being built just a few metres from the facility to spring 100 ’dangerous bad boys’.
The actual circumstances which led to the escape of the bandidosbully boyz are shrouded in mystery as police officials said they were informed about the incident after "considerable delay".
A senior police official ─ who wished not to be named ─ told Dawn that the police received a letter from DIG Prisons, Ashraf Ali Nizamani, on Wednesday evening, stating that the two under-trial prisoners have escaped and that the DIG wanted registration of the case against the escaped UTPs and several jail officials over their alleged negligence.
The DIG Prisons’ letter also did not mention the exact date of the escape of the prisoners.
According to the DIG Prisons’ letter obtained by Dawn, the inmates namely Sheikh Muhammad Mumtaz ─ alias Firoon alias Sher Khan alias Shahzad alias Rahi ─ and Muhammad Ahmed Khan alias Munna had beat feet from ’judicial complex of Central Prison Karachi’.
"Two under-trial prisoners were found missing and reported to have beat feet from the Judicial Complex adjacent to Central Prison Karachi," said the DIG Prisons’ letter dated June 14.
Raja Umer Khattab, a bigwig of the police’s Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) told Dawn that they were not informed about the timing of the escape of the UTPs. He said the both LJ bandidosbully boyz were nabbed Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit! by the CTD police in 2013.
Khattab said they were both hardcore LJ bandidosbully boyz and that Sheikh Mumtaz alias Firoon, a resident of Orangi Town was involved in assassination'>assassinations of 57 persons including members of Shia community and the police. He had 32 cases registered against him.
Similarly, Khattab said Ahmed alias Munna, a resident of Korangi was involved in seven assassination'>assassination cases.
They belonged to Qasim Rasheed group, which was linked with Naeem Bukhari-led LJ outfit.
Khattab claimed that the law enforcers had almost wiped out Naeem Bukhari-led LJ outfit but now their two members had escaped.
He said they considered the escape of the bandidosbully boyz from the prison as a "worrying development".
The CTD official said the jail administration had recently taken several steps to secure the jail but despite this, the UTPs managed to escape.
Khattab also said that the CTD team would visit the Central Prison on Thursday to ascertain the circumstances behind the prisoners' escape.
The jail administration has suspended 12 jail staff including Superintendent Central Prison Ghulam Murtaza Sheikh, Deputy Superintendent Faheem Memon and Assistant Superintendent Abdul Rehman Sheikh.

[Iraq News] The Syrian Democratic Forces captured the Briton known as "Jihadi Jack", who joined the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... in Syria in 2014, Qasioun News reported on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old Jack Letts (Known as Jihadi Jack) is currently imprisoned by Kurdish forces, however, he claimed abandoning the Islamic State group and its ideology.
Jihadi Jack also claimed that he was deceived by the Islamic State, but he quit after witnessing the group killing their own supporters, while said that the terrorist group tossed in the clink ... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not... him three times and threatened to kill him.
Letts converted to Islam while attending high school and travelled to Jordan in 2014, then moved to Syrian Raqqa in the same year.
He got married in Iraq, however, his wife and child are still in the Islamic State-held territory, while he revealed that he went to Raqqa to recover after being maimed in an kaboom.
According to Daily Star, Jack said he linked with a people-smuggler who helped get him out of the Islamic State-controlled territory before being captured by the Kurds.
Leaving the aforementioned wife and child to their fate? What a gallant gentleman, to be sure.
Noteworthy, in a news report published last year by "The Independent", Letts has dismissed reports that he is a member of the Islamic State and accused the media of demonizing young Britons who convert to Islam and publishing lies about him because of his Islamic faith.
"It’s sort of awkward when the media thinks your ISIS and your not. Thinks you have a son and you dont. Thinks your married when your not," he wrote.
The Daily Mail reminds us that a year ago his parents were charged with terrorism-related offenses for sending him money.

Alsumaria News quoted the source saying that "unconfirmed reports tel that the so-called ’emir’ of Islamic State in Saadiya Basin died of injuries sustained during his participation in the attack on an army checkpoint near Rabia village near Saadiya (60 Km east of Baqubah)."
Islamic State, almost losing its main holdout in djinn-infested Mosul ... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn... to a security operation running since October, has been escalating attacks at other provinces where it still has a presence.
Government and tribal forces have launched occasional operations over the past few months to clear border regions between Diyala and Salahuddin, killing dozens of bad boys. IS fighters have also responded with occasional attacks targeting troops, leaving several deaths.
Officials from towns still held by IS since 2014 have pressed the Iraqi government to hasten with security operations to retake those regions, but the Iraqi government is giving most attention to its battle in Mosul, Islamic State’s largest stronghold in Iraq.

"Iraqi fighter jets launched Arclight airstrikes that destroyed a weapon stash, rest house, booby-trapping workshops of the IS in Tal Afar," a statement by the War Media Cell said on Wednesday, adding "dozens of gunnies were killed."
On Tuesday, the Defense Ministry announced destroying three booby-trapped vehicles by Iraqi Arclight airstrikes in Tal Afar.
Tal Afar is one of the important strongholds still held by IS in Nineveh.
The group has sustained severe losses in personnel and ground since an offensive was launched in mid October to retake Mosul, the second-largest Iraqi city and the murderous Moslems’ last urban stronghold in the country.
Eastern Mosul was recaptured from IS in January, after a US-backed offensive was launched in October. A new offensive started in February to retake the west.
on Tuesday, Federal Police said more than 1200 Islamic State murderous Moslems, including 27 leaders and 214 snipers, were killed, while 300 square kilometers were retaken since operations began in western side of Mosul.
Less than 1000 fighters are believed to be remaining in Mosul’s Old City, according to commanders from the Iraqi leadership and the allied U.S.-led coalition.

[Straits Times] As the siege of Marawi enters its fourth week, more than 200 people have lost their lives and much of the city lies in ruins. The strongest attempt yet by Islamic State supporters to seize and hold territory in southeast Asia has turned into urban street battles in what is now largely a ghost town.
The Philippine military seems to have adopted a strategy of destroying the city to save it, conducting bombing runs at least twice a day. The insue holding on to a piece of the city centre, controlling checkpoints on several bridges and planting well-armed snipers in some of the city's mosques. Hundreds of civilians are believed to be in their midst, making the government assault more difficult.
Marawi, a city of 200,000, sits on the shore of Lake Lanao on Mindanao. The Agus River, which flows from the lake, divides the city. The rebels still hold the part of the city southeast of the river that was once the economic and business center. The heaviest fighting is concentrated there in an area of about 500 square meters, a military commander said.
Rebel snipers are positioned in the taller buildings, forcing troops to maintain their distance. The military said the rebels control a fifth of the city.
Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Tampus said, "It's urban warfare, face-to-face combat. They are still holding out. The fighting is house to house, building by building."
The military controls the skies and has been using helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft to bomb the city, inflicting heavy damage but failing to drive out the rebels so far.
The military says militants are using mosques and religious schools as bases for fighting, including for placement of sniper nests; soldiers cannot attack these buildings because they are protected as cultural monuments.
As the battle rages on, ISIS has posted videos promoting the militants' narrative that they are winning and that the Philippine army had "completely failed" to retake the city. The most recent clip shows men firing weapons from buildings interspersed with scenes of Marawi. It ends with a graphic execution in which six men in orange shirts and handcuffs are made to kneel and are then machine-gunned from the back. Military spokesman Zia Alonto Adiong said the scenes of rebe;s firing weapons "appear to be (in) Marawi", but that the executions do not.
The military yesterday also said that US troops are on the ground near Marawi but are not involved in fighting. It earlier said the US was providing technical assistance, but had no boots on the ground. It was not clear how close to the battle zone the US troops are.
