[al-Alam] Authorities from the veterinary and food supply department seized on Tuesday a large batch of donkey meat, from an estimated 70 donkeys, that was waiting to be cooked and allegedly distributed to Cairo restaurants for human consumption.
Investigators say the owner of the farm on the Assiut western road in Fayoum province, where the meat was seized, had long been slaughtering donkeys and distributing their meat to restaurants in Greater Cairo.
The operation that was formed of veterinary doctors, also found around 1,000 alive donkeys that were ready to be slaughtered.
While the farm owner said the donkey meat was being given as food for lions of the circus, Mostafa al-Qeesy, deputy of the department, said they received information that the meat was also being sold for human consumption.
Residents said that the slaughtering of donkeys has been taking place for years in the farm and that the owner had been disposing of the donkey heads and bowels on the side of the road.
Mohammed Sulieman, a worker in a nearby farm, said the meat are usually transferred in vehicles to Cairo after being prepared.

There are a few things going on here, other than Aykroyd trusting the local Sheriff to know the laws. I will get back to Mr. Aykroyd.
The article says $50 gas for a caliber < 9mm, $100 gas for caliber > 9mm. Wut? That's some hollywood level thinking right there. Without getting into the whole caliber/dollar or type of firearm, let me point out: if the neighborhood is as bad as the Sheriff says, the good guys are not going to give up their protection for $50 (damn near insulting) and the bad guys are not going to give up their tool of trade for an amount they can easily shoplift in a single theft (to them, laughable).
Where is the County Attorney? Certainly not keeping up with the law. And the Sheriff, so concerned about guns, should he not also have been aware of such a law involving firearm transactions?
But despite all this, Aykroyd is going to go anyways as a Campaign for Sheriff trip.

Maybe he can do "Gags for Guns", in which someone who turns in a gun gets tickets for a comedy by Aykroyd. That way no one can claim anyone's getting "something of value" for the gun.
I have always been struck by the low prices offered by gun by-backs. I figure most of the guns bought back have been stolen for the purpose of turning them in at the gun buy-back.

Artillery fire exchanges continued in Gorlovka and Donetsk city, and fighting intensified in Shirokino, according to Russian language news and official sources.
According to the Donetsk ministry of defense Ukrainian artillery hit targets in the Kievskiy and Oktyabrskiy districts, and at the airport terminal, as well as at Spartak.
Artillery fire on Gorlovka, according to defense ministry spokesman Eduard Basurin, damaged four residential structures. Rebel media said that five unidentified civilians were killed.
Ukrainian media said that their artillery struck targets in western Gorlovka, specifically rebel 120mm mortars, which were also hitting civilians, killing three and wounding three.
Fighting in Donetsk
Rebel and Ukrainian artillery units continue pounding one another in western Donetsk.
Rebel media claimed that Ukrainian artillery hit several residences in Kuibyshevskiy district damaging eight residences, setting five on fire. Rebel media also claimed that Ukrainian artillery killed two unidentified civilians.
In Kievskiy district, three residences were hit by Ukrainian artillery.
Ukrainian media said that rebel artillery, including 120mm mortar and 122mm tube artillery, hit targets in Peski and Avdievka.
According to a new account in the Ukrainian Russian language site censor.net, rebel artillery hit targets in Opytnoye, and when Ukrainian artillery with the 90th Battalion returned fire at targets at the airport terminal, they claimed to have struck a forward ammunition depot belonging to the rebels, destroying it.
Ukrainian media confirmed rebel reports that a shootout was underway at Spartak, which goes some distance in explaining Ukrainian artillery hitting the Putilovsky bridge two days ago.
Putilovsky bridge is on a key route from the west to the Donetsk airport, and was the site of an intense tank gunfight last February, just after the airport fell to the rebels.
Rebel media also claimed that a small arms firefight had taken place at Peski, which is split between the two combatants.
Marinka
Fighting and artillery fire continued at Marinka, according to Ukrainian media.
A separate report in censor.net said that rebels used 120mm mortar and tank gunfire against targets in residential sectors.
Shirokino
Rebel media reported that Ukrainian artillery units fired 122mm rocket artillery into several rebel controlled areas including in Shirokino, Berdyansk and Mirnoye, 80 rounds in all.
Ukrainian media said that their artillery fired on positions of rebel 152mm artillery around the Shirokino area of operation.

[RFE/RL] Baurzhan Orda, a journalist with Kazakhstan's Khabar news agency, posted on his Facebook page a video showing a devastated young woman during an apparent bride-snatching in Kazakhstan which has gone viral.
The clip shows a group of people forcing a head scarf, a presumed sign of betrothal, on an unidentified woman despite her pleas. She appears to be in her teens or perhaps early 20's.
"Let me go! I won't put it on!" she screams as her apparent kidnappers, who include an young man and an older woman, hold her on the floor. At one point, she curses them. The young woman eventually stops fighting long enough for the older woman to put the garment on her head.
The woman tells the traumatized girl, "You blame us like that only because you are angry. We are not offended."
A young man orders someone to "put the holy Koran on the threshold -- if she steps out over it, then let her go."
The older woman tries to convince the exhausted young woman to stay, saying, "We know your parents; we know you. Arai, we are not some strangers. You know us. We knew you would act this way. Not just you, but everyone else is being bride-snatched. There is nothing to fear. You will be our daughter."
Young men are heard to add, "Yes, everyone is bride-snatched. It's fine."
The same journalist posted a similar video on his Facebook account later that day. In that clip, a young woman is carried from a car onto a white carpet, where a head scarf is forced on her. She screams and struggles, but two young men grab her and force her into the house with the help of another young woman. Small children are among those watching the incident, with sweets being thrown in traditional wedding fashion while a romantic Kazakh song about a young girl joining the family of her future husband blares in the background.
Throughout the region, the wearing of a head scarf denotes married status, and the placement of a head scarf on a young woman by a young man's mother suggests that she accepts her into the family. If she spurns the family by leaving the house immediately afterwards, she might well be expected to leave the town, village, or region under a cloud of shame.
But while Kyrgyzstan, for example, has felt obliged to legislate against such traditions, they are not widely practiced in most of Kazakhstan and therefore not legislated against.
[RFE/RL] Georgia has paid a heavy price for its desire to join NATO. On June 16, the nation will bury the 30th soldier killed in Afghanistan. Corporal Ramaz Davitaia died on June 8 from wounds suffered in Helmand Province. The soldier's death has caused some in Georgia to question whether the country is sacrificing too much for a goal that may be unattainable.
I'm sure the Georgians are nice enough but how close to the North Atlantic are they?
Georgia has become NATO's most reliable nonmember partner, having participated in alliance operations in Kosovo and Afghanistan. With 880 soldiers currently serving in NATO's Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, Georgia is making the second-largest contribution after the United States. Per capita, its contribution is by far the largest.
NATO has assured Georgia that the door is open, but the ultimate goal keeps slipping further down the road. In March, the country was shocked when French President Hollande said that "France's position for the moment is to refuse any new [NATO] membership."
In response, opposition leader Nino Burjanadze said, "Those in Georgia who claim we have a chance to become a NATO member state are liars."
Advocates of joining NATO are often reduced to arguing that the military reform it requires is itself worth pursuing. Vakhtang Kapanadze, chief of the joint staff of the Georgian Armed Forces, said, "People ask what are we doing there [in Afghanistan] when we have so many problems in Georgia? I would say that this mission is very important for us. First, because it is a great way of showing the world that we are participating in its collective security. Second, because it is the best way of confronting security challenges and risks far from home rather than in our own country. We understand this. And third, because it is an excellent school for our military."
He said the Defense Ministry's job is to "work, work, and work with our troops to bolster the defense capabilities of the country. Then we will be more attractive to NATO than some weak, collapsing state."

[RFE/RL] Swiss officials say a Bosnian Muslim military commander who was arrested in Switzerland in connection with alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity will contest his extradition to Serbia.
Switzerland's Federal Office of Justice said that Naser Oric was arrested in Thonex in the canton of Geneva on Wednesday based on a request submitted by Serbia in February last year.
The FOJ will ask Serbian authorities to submit a formal extradition request within an 18-day period.
In 1995 Bosnian Serb forces invaded a UN "safe haven" from where they took 8,000 Muslim men and boys to be executed in the days that followed. Oric, then a Bosnian army commander, was in charge of the town's defense. He was indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia for crimes against Serbs but was acquitted of all charges in 2008.
Bosnian Prime Minister Denis Zvizdic said the arrest was politically motivated.
MADRID -- Seeking to redress one of the darkest chapters of Spain's history, the Spanish Parliament on Thursday approved a long-awaited law devised to open the way for citizenship for thousands of Sephardic Jews whose ancestors were expelled in 1492.
"This law says a lot about what we were in the past, what we are today and what we want to continue to be in the future -- an open, diverse and tolerant Spain," Rafael CatalĂĄ, the Spanish justice minister, told lawmakers on Thursday.
The law is set to come into force in October, and may help turn what has until now been a trickle of successful applications into a flood. But just how many Sephardic Jews will be able to get a Spanish passport is unclear.
The new law is intended to give Spanish citizenship to any person whose Sephardic origins can be certified. It also removes any obligation for applicants to renounce their current citizenship.
The Sephardic citizenship law, however, has also prompted some soul-searching about why similar rules should not be extended to the descendants of the Muslim Moors who were also expelled in the late 15th century. Why should similar rules NOT be extended to Muslim descendants? Maybe because they took Iberia from the Iberians who fought for centuries to take it back, history quite different from the Sephardim. Among other things, national sovereignty implies choosing who belongs - and who doesn't. National sovereignty is a very un-PC idea, modern Euros must cringe at the thought they might have to carry it out on their own behalf.
Another indicator of the anxiety pervading the community is the number of Turkish Jews who have jumped at the opportunity to acquire Spanish citizenship. The vast majority of Turkey’s Jews are descendants of Spanish exiles who were welcomed into the Ottoman Empire.
Earlier this year the Spanish government announced its intention of extending citizenship to descendants of Sephardic Jews expelled in 1492. Shortly thereafter 5,000 Turkish Jews — roughly a third of the community — applied for dual citizenship, potentially opening the doors to life in Europe, according to a recent Financial Times report.
How many of those will pass whatever citizenship test is devised is another question, of course, but clearly there is interest, whereas for the past decade only about 100 Turkish Jews have moved to Israel each year.

[DAWN] The city witnessed its eight victim of the deadly 'brain-eating' amoeba as a 56-year-old man became the latest to succumb to Naegleria fowleri, DawnNews reported Thursday.
According to a private hospital, Talib Ali Khan was a resident of Federal B Area and was being treated for the past few days.
The Naegleria floweri germ, popularly known as brain eating amoeba, survives on bacteria in warm waters.It can be destroyed through boiling water or proper chlorination.
One of the main causes of the disease is swimming in which the amoeba eating bacteria which lives on the bacteria of warm waters enters the brain through nasal cavities and eats up its tissues.
Health officials claim that symptoms of Naegleria can be overlooked as it resembles symptoms of meningitis and tuberculosis. According to an expert, the initial symptoms after one to seven day after the infection are seizures, loss of balance and disorientation. Then the disease spreads rapidly and death occurs within 12 days.

The gap between black and white Americans over whether race relations is the biggest US problem is wider than it has been in any year since the period from 2002 to 2007, a survey released on Thursday showed.
The Gallup survey comes after a series of police killings of unarmed black men in Ferguson, Missouri, New York's Staten Island, and Baltimore, Maryland, have fueled a national debate about justice for US minorities.
After weeks of protests over the August 2014 death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, in Ferguson, blacks became just as likely to name race relations as the nation's top problem as they were to name unemployment, the polling company found.
In the last quarter of 2014, 15 percent of blacks cited race relations as the top US problem, compared with 3 percent of whites in the same quarter - a 12 percent gap, the survey found.
In the most recent quarter - April to June 2015 - the gap was 9 percentage points - 13 percent of blacks and 4 percent of whites named race relations as the most important US problem.

Within reason I don't have a huge problem with Caribbean and African immigration. They seem to be relatively good immigrants for the most part: hardworking, family oriented, and so forth. In fact, from what I've seen the group that has the biggest problem with them is "African" Americans.
