[AlAhram] Islamist faceless myrmidons have killed five soldiers in an attack on a military outpost in restive northeast Nigeria ... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border... , army sources said Thursday.
Fighters from the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems.... West Africa Province (ISWAP) in several trucks opened fire on troops at a checkpoint outside the town of Mainok in Borno state on Wednesday, they said.
"We lost five soldiers in the surprise attack on the checkpoint," a military officer, who did not want to be named, told AFP.
Troops from the town intercepted the bully boys, leading to a shootout in which "some of the terrorists" were killed and two vehicles fitted with machine guns were recovered, he said.
Another military source said the five soldiers manning the checkpoint were "outgunned" by the hard boys.
The jihadists were said to have taken three military vehicles away.
The army said late Wednesday its troops killed nine "Boko Haram ... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality... terrorists" in an ambush, outside Mainok.
Spokesman Sagir Musa said two soldiers were "slightly maimed" in the encounter, without mentioning any fatalities from troops.
Mainok, which lies along the 120-kilometre (75-mile) highway linking Maiduguri and Damaturu, the capital of neighbouring Yobe state, is an ISWAP stronghold.
The area has seen an upsurge in abductions of civilians, prompting increased military deployments to confront the hard boys.
ISWAP which split from Boko Haram in 2016, has intensified attacks against the military since the middle of 2018.
In January, 22 soldiers were killed in three separate ISWAP attacks in the area, according to military sources.
The decade-long jihadist conflict has killed 36,000 people and displaced around two million from their homes in northeast Nigeria.
The violence has spread to neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon ...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there... , prompting a regional military coalition to fight the hard boys

[Jpost] Turkish authorities have detained 38 people including the local head of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) in relation to an armed attack which killed two people in the eastern province of Van, governor's office said on Friday.
The attack on Thursday targeted two municipality personnel and a civilian returning from distributing aid to a neighborhood placed under quarantine as part of measures to curb the coronavirus outbreak.
Turkey's communication director Fahrettin Altun and other officials blamed the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) for carrying out the attack.
[AlAhram] Ottoman Turkish authorities on Friday detained four more elected mayors from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...Qatar's satrapy in Asia Minor... 's mainly Kurdish populated east and southeast regions, the state-run news agency ...and if you can't trust the state-run news agency who can you believe?... reported, as the government pressed ahead with its crackdown on a pro-Kurdish party it accuses of links to Kurdish holy warriors.
The mayors from the People's Democratic Party, or HDP, were detained at their homes, removed from office and replaced with government-appointed trustees, Anadolu Agency reported.
The government accuses the party of links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK. The HDP denies the accusation.
The four mayors were elected to office in local elections last year in the cities of Igdir and Siirt as well as in Siirt's districts of Baykan and Kurtalan.
Some 45 other mayors have been removed from office since local elections in March 2019, and 21 of them have been imprisoned on terror-related charges.
Seven former HDP politicians, including former chairman Selahattin Demirtas, are also in prison.

Disassemble the entire town, stone by stone. If concrete, use jackhammers. Scatter the stones over kilometers. Make the town's inhabitants do the work. Bulldoze the remainder. Maybe in the process the murderer will be turned over. Don't stop even if the murderer is turned over. Let them taste true despair and hopelessness.

[IsraelTimes] Israeli troops shot and injured three Paleostinians who were attempting an attack on an army post near Jerusalem on Friday night, the Israel Defense Forces said.
The attackers targeted the IDF post near the Paleostinian town of Abu Dis with explosive charges and molotov cocktails.
Soldiers who had been waiting in ambush fired on the men, injuring them. Their condition was not immediately known. No IDF troops were maimed in the incident. "waiting in ambush? Nice"
"An attack was thwarted moments ago when IDF troops spotted three Paleostinians hurling explosives and lighting Molotov cocktails, preparing to attack an IDF post. Our troops responded with fire and thwarted the attack," the IDF said in a statement.
The attack comes amid heightened tensions in the West Bank. An IDF soldier was killed during an arrest raid in the Paleostinian village of Yabed when a brick was thrown at his head on Tuesday morning and a Paleostinian teenager was rubbed out during festivities with Israeli troops in the al-Fawar refugee camp the following day.
IDF troops arrested two suspects in Yabed overnight Friday-Saturday, according to Arabic media reports.
Friday is also Nakba — or catastrophe — Day, which marks the displacement of Paleostinians before and after Israel’s creation on May 14, 1948. The period around Nakba Day often sees increased levels of violence in the West Bank and Israel.
[IsraelTimes] An explosion was heard in the Syrian city of Aleppo in the early hours of Saturday morning, Syrian state TV said.
No other details were immediately available. The Syrian official state news agency SANA first reported the incident.
BACKGROUND
On May 4, two rounds of Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... s attributed to Israel targeted Iran-linked targets in Syria, including one against a weapons factory in al-Safira outside Aleppo and a second against militia bases in Deir Ezzor in the east of the country. Those attacks were the sixth and seventh strikes attributed to Israel against Iran-linked forces in Syria in a period of two weeks.
The airstrike near Aleppo caused major damage to a presumed missile workshop, according to satellite images released by the Israeli analysis firm ImageSat International. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the airstrike on the al-Safira facility caused massive secondary explosions.
According to the Observatory, the strike on Tehran-backed militia bases in the Deir Ezzor region killed 14 pro-Iranian fighters, who were all either Iranian or Iraqi nationals. The Britannia-based monitor did not report any deaths in the strike on the weapons factory outside Aleppo.
Though Israeli officials generally refrain from taking responsibility for specific strikes in Syria, they have acknowledged conducting hundreds to thousands of raids in the country since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011. These have overwhelmingly been directed against Iran ...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate JewsZionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol... and its proxies, notably Hezbollah, but the IDF has also carried out strikes on Syrian air defenses when those batteries have fired at Israeli jets.
Israel’s fight against Iran in Syria has been ongoing for nearly a decade, after Tehran began sending its troops and its proxies into the country at the outbreak of the civil war there in 2011, but recent months have seen an increase in the number of strikes against Iran-linked sites in Syria, with the highest concentration around the capital, Damascus.

[SYRIAHR] Reliable sources have informed the Syrian Observatory that Iranian forces continue boosting their positions in the Syrian desert, as activists have monitored periodical military and logistical reinforcement arriving in the area.
The fortifications are concentrated along the desert from al-Bokamal near Iraq-Syria border to the south of Deir Ezzor city. These fortifications and reinforcement come in the wake of reports about a possible military operation which aims to eliminate Iranian presence, if Russia’s political solutions fail.
On Wednesday, SOHR sources reported that three powers, Israel, International Coalition and Russia, converging on the same road, just like an indirect coalition with a purpose of blocking Tehran-Beirut international highway and eliminating the Iranians in the Syrian desert.
According to very reliable SOHR sources, a delegation from Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) met with commanders of "Maghawir al-Thawra Forces" and "al-Nukhba Forces" operating in al-Tanaf area in the Syrian desert.
The meeting, held a few days ago, was centered on coordinated advances of these forces into the desert, as well as carrying out military operations, backed by the International Coalition, against the Iranian forces and loyal militias in order to block Tehran-Beirut international highway in Syria.
During the meeting, it was agreed that "Maghawir al-Thawra" and "al-Nukhba" forces would advance at the beginning under the pretext of fighting the "Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. ".
The issue of launching military operations depends mainly on the results of Russia’s attempts to persuade Iran ...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol... to pullout its forces and loyal militias from the desert and replace them with Russian-backed forces. The alternative forces are supposed to comprise tribal factions and ex-fighters who have struck reconciliation deals with security services.
If Russia fails to persuade the Iranians to retreat from the desert, a military solution comes to the fore and a ground operation will be carried out. There is a specialist network whose task is to collect information and geographic coordinates of Iranian targets and positions in "al-Shamiyyah" area. This network is affiliated directly to Israel and the International Coalition, while at the same time it has an indirect reporting line to Russia.
Furthermore, U.S. forces conduct reconnaissance tours and pay intensive and daily visits to SDF positions on the banks of Euphrates River.
For their part, the Iranians, the ultimate loser if Tehran-Beirut "artery" is blocked, formed a strong line of defence along the desert, from al-Bokamal near Iraq-Syria border to the south of Deir Ezzor city, as SOHR activists reported seeing large military reinforcement being delivered to Iranian-backed militias, via al-Bokamal crossing. A group of this reinforcement was transported in civilian buses to evade detection.
"Iranian forces boosted several positions, including ’T2′, M’eizileh, Haql al-Ward, al-Mazare’ in al-Mayadeen desert, Ain Ali in Mahakan desert, al-Majabil in al-Quriyyah desert, al-Imam Ali base, ’T3′, other positions in al-Wa’er desert, Hamimiyyah, Faydat Ibn Muwayni’, and other positions in the western countryside of Deir Ezzor," SOHR sources added.
