[Ynet] Frazier Glenn Cross, who killed three people at two Jewish center, charged with one count of capital murder, one count of first-degree murder.
Kansas prosecutors filed state-level murder charges Tuesday against the white supremacist accused in shootings that left three people dead at two Jewish community centers in suburban Kansas City.
Frazier Glenn Cross has been charged with one count of capital murder for the deaths of 14-year-old boy and his grandfather outside the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City, Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe said at a news conference.
Cross also faces one count of first-degree, premeditated murder for the death of a woman who was bumped off while visiting her mother at a nearby retirement complex.
The capital murder charge carries the death penalty as possible punishment, Howe said, while the first-degree murder charge carries a life sentence with no chance for parole for at least 25 years. Cross is being held on $10 million bond, and is scheduled to appear in court later Tuesday.
Cross, a 73-year-old Vietnam War veteran from southwest Missouri, founded the Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in his native North Carolina and later the White Patriot Party.
Federal prosecutors say there's enough evidence to warrant putting the case before a grand jury as a hate crime. Moving the case from state to federal prosecutors would likely mean tougher punishments if Cross is convicted, but US Attorney Barry Grissom said Tuesday that federal charges in the case were likely a week or more away, and Cross' state case would have to be resolved before he could be moved to a federal trial.
"Our system is more nimble, we can move a little bit quicker than the federal system. We've alleged he came into the community I've been elected to protect... This isn't about retribution, this is about seeking justice," Howe said.
'Notorious white supremacist'
Cross shouted "Heil Hitler" at television cameras as he was locked away Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please! after Sunday's killings, which shocked the city on the eve of Passover and refocused attention on the nation's problem with race-related violence.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit that monitors the activities of known white supremacists, says Cross, who also went by the name Frazier Glenn Miller, has been immersed in white supremacy most of his life.
During the early 1980s, Cross was "one of the more notorious white supremacists in the US," according to the Anti-Defamation League, and served as the Carolina Knights' "grand dragon" before launching the supremacist White Patriot Party, the law center said.
By 1987, Cross was the target of a nationwide manhunt for violating terms of his bond while appealing a North Carolina conviction for operating a paramilitary camp. Federal agents tracked him along with three other men to a rural Missouri mobile home stocked with hand grenades, automatic weapons and thousands of bullets.
A federal grand jury indicted Cross on weapons charges and accused him of plotting robberies and the liquidation of the law center's founder, Morris Dees. He served three years in federal prison, and, as part of a plea bargain, testified against other Klan leaders in a 1988 sedition trial.
Cross ran for the US House in 2006 and the US Senate in 2010 in Missouri, each time espousing a white-power platform. During his Senate run as a registered write-in candidate, Cross' effort to air anti-Semitic ads was scuttled by the Federal Communications Commission, which concluded Cross was not a "bona fide" candidate entitled to mandatory access to airwaves.

[Al Ahram] South Sudanese rebels clashed with government troops Tuesday in the key oil town of Bentiu, with the guerrillas demanding that companies end production as they sought to capture oilfields.
Rebel front man Lul Ruai Koang claimed to have captured the town, one of the most bitterly contested regions in the four-month-long conflict, but the army rejected their claims.
"The recapturing of Bentiu marks the first phase of liberation of oilfields," Koang said in a statement.
Army front man Philip Aguer confirmed fighting in the town but said it had not fallen.
"There is heavy fighting, but it is still continuing... The rebels have tried to penetrate one part of the town but are being held back," Aguer told AFP.
Former vice president turned rebel chief Riek Machar told AFP on Monday forces would attack the capital Juba and target crucial oilfields, vowing that the war will not end until the country's president is removed from power.
On Tuesday, the rebels issued an ultimatum to oil companies to shut down production.
Before fighting broke out in the young nation, which won independence from Sudan less than three years ago after a decades of civil war, oil provided more than 95 percent of its government budget.

[Libya Herald] Students studying in the Faculty of Law at the University of Sirte are to be segregated and have been instructed to abide by a strict dress code under a decision taken by the department.
New seating arrangements would see male students seated in the front rows of lecture halls and female students seated at the back, according to a university source.
He said the regulation also said that male and female students at the faculty should not mix at other times on campus. It stipulated that female students must wear loose-fitting and modest clothes, he added.
The decision is based on Article 39 of Higher Education Regulation No. 501 of 2010, which requires students to keep to certain dress codes. Under Article 44 of the regulation, those not dressing appropriately can be given face a number of penalties, from a caution to suspension from the university.

[An Nahar] Kuwait's prime minister told MPs Tuesday that a videotape allegedly showing former bigwigs plotting a coup was "tampered with," parliament speaker Marzouk al-Ghanem said after a secret session.
Local media have said the former officials in the videotape include a senior member of the ruling family, without giving details.
Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Sabah "showed reports by specialized foreign sides affirming without doubt that the audio recordings and the videotapes which they examined had been tampered with and do not represent genuine and reliable copies," Ghanem said.
The reports also indicate that "parts of the audio recordings (on the videotape) had been removed," the speaker said in a statement he read after the three-hour debate demanded by the prime minister and 15 MPs.
Ghanem said the videotapes were shown to MPs during the secret session and that parts of them were unclear.
The government informed parliament that it will hand over all the tapes and related documents to the public prosecution, which is currently conducting an investigation, he said.
Parliament rejected a proposal to form an investigative panel into the videotape with a landslide majority of 50 members against seven, the speaker said.
Pro-government MP Abdulhameed Dashti told news hounds the tape is "fake," while opposition MP Riyadh al-Adasani insisted it is real and "very serious".
Islamist MP Hamdan al-Azemi said the issue of the videotape is a reflection of "an internal struggle between senior members of the Al-Sabah ruling family."

In the world of European medical research, few names carry more clout and prestige than the Institut Pasteur. In 1983, the French non-profit discovered HIV, and three years later found another strain of the disease. It has posted groundbreaking research in the study of diseases from yellow fever to tetanus to diphtheria. In all, its scientists have netted numerous Nobel Prizes, one of which came in 2008.
Now it's in the news for something equally remarkable -- but for a very different reason.
Days ago, the Paris institute announced that it lost more than 2,300 vials of SARS, a disease that killed more than 770 people and infected 8,000 more a decade ago, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
A routine inventory turned up the disappearance of the tubes. The institute suspects they've been missing since January, and as of Wednesday morning, no one knows what happened to them.
When scientists realized the vials had gone missing, they called France's drug and health safety agency to see if it would have any more luck.
"Say, you monsieur's have any of our deadly virus vials?"
"Non!"
"Hokay!"
It didn't, reports the Local. Last week, the agency looked for the 2,300 missing vials in what the Institute calls an "in-depth" investigation at an unnamed lab.
But don't worry, Pasteur says. "The tubes concerned have no infectious potential," its statement said. "Independent experts referred by health authorities have qualified the risk as 'nil.'"
We'll be the judge of that...
Scientists dismissed the possibility that someone could put the virus to nefarious use.
"We knew from the beginning that the samples were not infectious, as the independent experts confirmed," said Christian Brechot, Pasteur's president, in an interview. He added that a malfunctioning freezer door would have killed the virus.
So do they know the freezer malfunctioned?
"[But] losing the samples is an unacceptable mistake," he said. "We took a decision to inform the public. We want to be perfectly transparent. It is the first time that the institute has lost samples in this manner."
Nonetheless, the disappearance of a deadly respiratory virus isn't the sort of thing one shrugs off. The disease ripped through China in 2003 and hopped to Taiwan and Singapore, where dozens more died before it was stamped out.
It's anyone's guess what happened to the missing vials. "The theory of human error is the most probable, but we are not ruling anything out," Brechot said.
It's most likely human stupidity (not error). But anything less than a full investigation and the resignation of the director of the lab will mean that the fix is in...

[DAWN] Two suspected members of Greece's neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn received life sentences on Tuesday over the fatal stabbing of a Pakistani immigrant last year, a judicial source said.
However, the Athens court judging the case threw out the prosecution's argument that the murder of 27-year-old Shehzad Luqman in January 2013 was racially motivated.

[DAWN] LAHORE: A sub-Inspector of Chuhng investigation police was suspended from service after a private torture-cum-detention cell was unearthed in the West Wood Colony, Thokar Niaz Beg, on Tuesday.
SI Muhammad Ijaz had detained four suspects, including a woman, at a house in connection with a theft case. Sadar SP Zahid Nawaz conducted an inquiry which held the SI responsible for detaining the suspects at a private house.
They were identified as Shaukat, Sharafat, Ghulam Rasool and Irshaad Bibi. The theft case was lodged by Khawaja Shakeel who, according to the FIR, lost 30 tolas of gold ornaments, Rs40,000 and other valuables.

[DAWN] The schoolteacher who was suspected of kidnapping, raping and murdering an 11-year-old child was killed by Khanewal district police on Tuesday.
Muhammad Ishaq, who belonged to the Shah Jamal locality of Muzaffargarh district, had allegedly kidnapped a class-V student last week from the Missali School in Qaimwala, Khanewal, and killed him after rape.
According to an FIR, when the school closed on last Thursday, Ishaq and the school principal telephoned the child's parents to send him for tuition. When the child reached the school, Ishaq and the principal raped him. Later, Ishaq fled, taking the child along.
When the child did not reach home till night, the family contacted the principal who denied having any knowledge about the child. The parents took police and reached school where the principal was tossed in the slammer ... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not... for investigation. The principal disclosed that Ishaq had gone to Muzaffargarh.
SHO Sadiq Rind raided Ishaq's home in Shah Jamal, Muzaffargarh, but he fled from there. Police contacted former tehsil nazim ...small time big shot, the chief elected official of a local government in Pakistan, such as a district, tehsil, union council, or village council... Abad Dogar who called the accused to his outhouse and handed him over to police.
During interrogation, Ishaq said he had killed the child, put acid on his face and buried him. Police took him to a farm and recovered the body on his information.
On Tuesday, Khanewal police claimed, when they were taking Ishaq to Lahore for a DNA test, he attacked coppers and tried to snatch their weapons. They said the suspect was killed during the fight.
Or possibly the police don't like pedophiles.

Farman had fled the police earlier on Monday as he had to be produced today in an anti-terrorism court (ATC).
Arif and Farman had been found guilty of the same crime in March 2011 and tossed in the clink Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages! . They were released in May last year after serving a two-year sentence.
Arif's arrest came yesterday when police raided their house in Kahawar Kalan village, near Darya Khan town in Bhakkar district, after neighbours complained of an overpowering stench.
