[SHABELLENEWS] Suspected Somali pirates have again hijacked a vessel on one of the world’s crucial trade routes, authorities said Saturday night, the latest in a string of attacks after several years of silence.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations piracy watchdog said on its website it had received a report from a vessel under attack and possibly boarded off the coast of war-ravaged Yemen. It gave no further details.
Somali pirates in recent weeks have hijacked at least two vessels with foreign crews in the waters off Somalia and Yemen, marking a return of the threat after half a decade.
A source with the ports ministry in Somalia’s northeastern semiautonomous state of Puntland ...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion... said armed pirates hijacked a ship flying under the Tuvalu flag and were steering it toward Somalia’s northern coast. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to news hounds.
Graeme Gibbon Brooks, the CEO of the British firm Dryad Maritime, said security officials believed the vessel to be a bulk carrier.
A Somali pirate, Bile Hussein, said he was aware that pirates had managed to board a ship near Yemen’s Socotra island despite resistance from the crew.
Commander Jacqui Sherriff, a spokeswoman for the European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... anti-piracy mission off Somalia, said the mission was liaising with other authorities to investigate and, if the attack was confirmed, "our thoughts go out to the crew." The U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, which oversees regional anti-piracy efforts from Bahrain, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The former director of the anti-piracy agency in Puntland, Abdirizak Mohammed Ahmed, said he had received information about the hijacking of a ship but could not give further details.
Earlier this month, officials said Somali pirates had seized a small boat and its 11 Indian crew members as the vessel passed through the narrow channel between Socotra Island and Somalia’s coast.
In March, Somali pirates hijacked a Comoros-flagged oil tanker, marking the first such seizure of a large commercial vessel since 2012. They later released the vessel and its Sri Lankan crew without conditions.
Pirates later seized a fishing trawler, which Somali authorities warned could be used for further piracy.
Piracy off Somalia’s coast was once a serious threat to the global shipping industry. It has lessened in recent years after an international effort to patrol near the country, whose weak central government has been trying to assert itself after a quarter-century of conflict. In December, NATO ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis.... ended its anti-piracy mission off Somalia’s waters.

[AFP] Two traffic policemen were killed on Saturday after their vehicle came under fire in Russia'S north Caucasus region.
The local branch of Russia’s Investigative Committee said "unidentified people fired multiple shots from an automatic weapon" at two traffic cops riding in their patrol vehicle in the town of Malgobek in Ingushetia at around 1:30 a.m. One of the policemen was killed at the scene, while the second officer died in hospital from his injuries, police said.
Attacks against police are not uncommon in the north Caucasus, which faces an active Islamist insurgency.
The latest incident came days after the ISIS Takfiri group claimed the killing of two other traffic policemen in the southern Russian city of Astrakhan this week. ISIS also claimed a separate attack that injured three National Guard officers on Thursday in an incident in which the assailant thought to be involved in the death of the Astrakhan traffic policemen was gunned down.
Astrakhan lies several hundred kilometers northeast of the restive north Caucasus, and attacks against law enforcement are less common there.

At least 25 civilians have been killed since beginning of April on Abu Zaayan street, which is considered as one of the "safe routes" opened by Iraqi troops, IOHR said in a report on Sunday.
The report quoted Abu Omar al-Hayali, a displaced resident from western djinn-infested Mosul ... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn... who took to Abu Zaayan street, along with his and other families, to escape toward the troops, as saying "once we attempted escaping the IS-held regions, the snipers started targeting civilians."

A journalist from Mosul, identifying himself with the pen-name Safaa Omar, told IOHR that the "safe passageways, that are still exposed to IS fires, are Nineveh public hospital route on al-Mahatta street and abu Zaayan street."
Meanwhile IOHR said that "Iraqi security troops make huge efforts to help civilians escape the battlefields, but they face the IS snipers. The troops assist dozens of families daily to reach safe places, however, some get killed or injured by bombs, mortar missiles or snipers."

[Reuters] Six Islamic militants killed in a standoff with police were planning to attack police officers in Indonesia's East Java province to seek revenge for the arrest of a radical leader. Authorities said on Sunday the men were cornered in a village in Tuban district on Saturday after attempting to shoot a traffic cop who was approaching them when he saw their car stopped at the roadside, said national police spokesman Rikwanto.
The six refused appeals to surrender during a standoff that lasted several hours and were slain by police, said Rikwanto.
On Friday, counterterrorism police arrested three militants who were allegedly plotting to attack a police station in East Java. Among those arrested was Zainal Anshori, a top figure of Jemaah Anshorut Daulah, an umbrella group of Indonesian extremists that claims allegiance to ISIS.
Rikwanto said that Anshori had orchestrated Saturday's planned attack. He said, "They had acted on Anshori's order as a revenge of his arrest," citing police interrogation of other arrested militants.

[Gulf Today] Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte again ordered the military to wipe out the Abu Sayyaf which he said has remained one of the nation's major threats. Duterte issued the order during his visit to a military camp in the capital town of Jolo, Sulu to award medals to the 28 soldiers injured in a recent clash with the Abu Sayyaf.
In his order, Duterte pointed out the campaign against the terrorist group should be treated equally with the war on illegal drugs which he launched after he became president in June 1016. He said, "We will not let up in the war on drugs and the Abu Sayyaf. They would not honor their word. If they like to kill, then, we’lll kill them up to the last men," in his speech before local officials and ranking military officers.
In a briefing, the military informed Duterte that the Abu Sayyaf has divided their 19 remaining foreign and Filipino hostages into five groups to elude pursuing security forces.
Earlier Duterte ordered the military to use all available resources including recently-acquired Philippine Air Force attack helicopters to launch a search and destroy operation against the terrorist group.

Two of the suspects — Joedel Nunez and Tantan Bacquiao – were caught by soldiers after detonating the explosives, said Andrea dela Cerna, regional spokesperson for the Southern Mindanao police.
Dela Cerna said the blast happened around 1 a.m. as soldiers were passing Sitio Magong-ong, San Rafael village, on their way to Sitio Yapsay, Talaytay village.
Another suspect identified as Glen Enijada was nabbed as he was about to escape on a motorcycle without license plates.
Dela Cerna said an alleged accomplice and financier, identified as Simeon Pamugas, was able to escape and is now being sought by authorities.
[Bangkok Post] Three more bombs, two of them unexploded, were found attached to high-voltage power poles on Saturday morning following a series of blasts and arson attacks that rocked Thailand's far South.
A team of explosive ordnance disposal officers rushed to the paddy field in Bacho district after local residents alerted police to their discovery. The EOD officers found a high-voltage power pole that had been uprooted by a bomb explosion. Metal and explosive materials were scattered around the area. A box containing a clock and wires attached to an electrical circuit was also found. About 200 meters away, the team found two unexploded bombs attached to another power pole.
Authorities on Saturday continued to survey other areas throughout the far South following a series of blasts in the four southernmost provinces from late Thursday night to early Friday. No casualties were reported in the bombings that damaged 52 power poles in 19 districts and caused widespread blackouts. During the same period, suspected insurgents also set fire to car tires at several locations and laid spikes on roads.
[ALMASDARNEWS] The predominantly-Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have repelled an attack launched by the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... on Safsafeh village, located nearly 6 kilometers to the east of Tabqa (Al-Thawrah).
ISIS turbans launched the assault from their stronghold of Tabqa city in a desperate attempt to lift the siege imposed by the Kurdish forces.
However, denial ain't just a river in Egypt... the attack ended in fiasco as the US-backed fighters held their positions, killing scores of the jihadists.

[Iraq News] Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... bandidossnuffies launched two suicide kabooms on U.S.-backed Syrian rebels near the border with Iraq, leaving at least 12 dead in the fighting and many maimed, rebels sources said on Sunday.
They said eight Islamic State fighters and four of their own men died.
An attack at midnight on a heavily defended base near the al Tanf border crossing involved at least one explosive-laden vehicle that rammed an entrance to the base. At least two U.S.-backed rebels were killed and scores maimed, a rebel source said.
The bandidossnuffies also staged a suicide attack on a convoy of rebel fighters from the Western-backed Osoud al Sharqiya rebel group, who had sent reinforcements from their outpost near the Rukban refugee camp further south-west. Two of the fighters in the convoy were killed in the ambush.
Islamic State "staged a suicide attack and there were festivities inside Tanf. Two were killed and several injured. They also attacked our convoy but it’s over and matters are under control," said a senior rebel source from Osoud al Sharqiya who requested anonymity.
Islamic State-affiliated Amaq news agency said two suicide attacks were conducted by its fighters near Tanf on "positions of Syrian groups supported by America." It gave no details.
U.S.-led coalition planes were involved in the operation to track down the bandidossnuffies who staged the hit-and-run attack and apparently fled, a rebel commander involved in the operation said.
Both Tanf and Rukban are near the joint Syria-Iraq-Jordan border. Osoud al Sharqiya, one of the main groups in that area fighting Islamic State, is part of the Free Syrian Army ... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund... of rebels financed and equipped by a Western coalition.
