A man faces five years in jail after being accused of assaulting a teenager with a hedgehog. William Singalargh, 27, is said to have thrown the hedgehog from 15ft away during a row with the unnamed 15-year-old.
"When it hit the victim in the leg, it caused a large red welt and several puncture marks," said a police source in Whakatane, on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. "The man was arrested shortly afterwards and he's been charged with assault with a weapon, namely a hedgehog."
A court hearing is set for April 17, and the defendant is understood to be planning to contest the charge.
The hedgehog was dead by the time police arrived at the scene, although it is not known whether it was still alive at the time of the assault in February.

Is the crime really 'Assault with a dangerous weapon' or is it 'Animal cruelty'? Only the latter would explain such a harsh potential sentence in lib-land.

What kind of person hurls dead animals at others? Or hurls a live one so hard that he kills it?
Italian police say they have arrested 38 suspects in a sweep against the 'Ndrangheta syndicate, which has allegedly been involved in murders, extortion and drugs and arms trafficking.
Three suspects are still being sought after the morning raids conducted across Italy and focusing on the southern Calabria region, where the powerful gang is based.
Police in the Calabrian city of Crotone say the operation has crippled a clan that terrorised businesses in the area with attacks and firebombings if they refused to pay protection money.
Police have uncovered three arms stashes, including AK-47s and explosives.
He told police he was trying to escape robbers when he was impaled
In what will surely rank as one of the year's more bizarre investigations, Toronto police are examining the circumstances of a man discovered near the playground of a North York elementary school yesterday morning impaled on a steel pole that had penetrated his rectum and left him painfully perched more than a metre off the ground, tightly clutching a tree.
"Strange but true and very, very painful," said Sergeant Roger Marchack of 33 Division. A report said the unidentified man told police he had been stranded for about two hours on the grounds of Roywood Public School, near York Mills Road and the Don Valley Parkway, before help arrived at around 7:30 a.m. when a passerby spotted him.
Paramedics cut the pole with a metal saw and took the man to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where the section still inside him was removed.
Believed to be in his 40s and known to police, he was in good condition after surgery. Detectives were waiting to reinterview him and check his claim that he had scrambled up the tree to escape a robbery, and fell when his three masked assailants tried to drag him back down.
The steel pole on which the man was spiked was tethered to the tree with a guy-line that served as support. The tree and its skinny branches showed no signs of damage.
Roywood Public School has about 270 pupils, ranging from kindergarten to Grade 5. There were no pupils on the premises at the time, but a daycare centre located inside the building was locked down for an hour.
As police canvassed the area, Sgt. Marchack said there was no description of the trio the man said had tried to mug him and that detectives were looking hard at the man's account of events. "We know who we have but I can't comment on any kind of [criminal] history," he said. "The initial call was that he was half-dressed and hanging from the tree in a bound situation, but that was not the case.
"He said two or three suspects, masked, had chased him so he ran up the tree. He said they attempted to pull him down from the tree and he fell on the pole, impaling himself in the rectal area, and that they then fled."
NORTH KITSAP - A 14-year-old boy upset that his mother threatened to send him to military school for skipping class turned her in Thursday for growing marijuana.
A Kitsap County deputy went to the residence on the 6400 block of NE Silver Springs Lane after the boy called 911 emergency dispatchers and said his mother was growing marijuana, reports said. At the house, the boy told the deputy he was angry that his mother was trying to discipline him for skipping class and talking back, "and he decided to tell on his mother," the report said.
At first, the 34-year-old woman said she only smoked marijuana. She declined to let the deputy search her house further without a warrant, then changed her mind. "What the heck, you don't need a warrant. I'll show you," the deputy quoted the woman as saying.
In her closet, the deputy found 10 small marijuana plants. The woman said she was growing them for personal use. She also told the deputy "it is tough to get her son to respect authority when he knows she breaks the law growing pot," the report said.
The son said he was concerned that he got his mother in trouble. But, as the deputy noted, "all he wanted was for her to get the message and do the right thing," the report said.
The woman was cooperative, the deputy wrote, and was not arrested. A report was forward to Kitsap County prosecutors, WestNET and Child Protective Services.
The Arizona Democratic Party contends that those who disagree with them require psychological evaluation.
At least that's the way I interpret this schlocky web site, CrAZyspace.org.
I'm pretty sure Jonah has some good stuff in his book about political movements who seek to define their opposition as mentally ill or disturbed and in need of psychological counseling, reeducation, or therapy.

When it comes to avoiding a ban for speeding, the courts hear every excuse in the book. But yesterday one motorist offered what must be a unique reason why he should keep his licence.
Mohammed Anwar said a ban would make it difficult to commute between his two wives and fulfil his matrimonial duties. His lawyer told a Scottish court the Muslim restaurant owner has one wife in Motherwell and another in Glasgow - he is allowed up to four under his religion - and sleeps with them on alternate nights.
Airdrie Sheriff Court had heard that Anwar was caught driving at 64mph in a 30mph zone in Glasgow, fast enough to qualify for instant disqualification. Anwar admitted the offence, but Sheriff John C. Morris accepted his plea not to be banned and allowed him to keep his licence. Instead, he was fined £200 and given six penalty points.
Lorna Jackson, from the road safety charity Brake, called the decision "astonishing".

24/7 perpetual outrage over the polygamy at a religious compound but this issue is completely ignored by our propaganda press outlets. And don't anyone say, "well they were children at the religious compound" because if the press was doing their job we know they'd find FAR more than 400 child brides or women forced into matrimony and forced to stay there under threat of an honor killing. But the press is silent on Islamic polygamy occcuring in Western countries.

From the whole article: ""Travelling just a few miles over the limit in a 30mph zone can be the difference between life and death..." and if'n I'm late for Booty Call again, you'll need to call the Coroner and not the traffic cop."
A German appeals court on Monday confirmed a 15-year prison sentence handed to a woman for killing eight of her newborn babies in the country's worst post-war infanticide case. Yeah, fifteen whole years, and not a minute less!
The court in Frankfurt an der Oder in eastern Germany found that the fact 42-year-old Sabine Hilschenz was an alcoholic did not reduce her accountability for the crime. They got that part right at least.
The divorced, unemployed dental assistant was found guilty of eight counts of manslaughter in 2006 for routinely killing her offspring. Hilschenz had told investigators that she did not harm the children but left them to die after giving birth alone every time following heavy drinking. She didn't actually kill them per se, she just left them to die. Slowly. The increased suffering of an innocent doesn't count under these circumstances, ya see. No? What do you mean you don't see? Ah, you must be one of those crazy conservatives who value life or something.
The remains of the babies were found in buckets and flowerpots at the home she shared with her husband, and in an old fish tank at the home of her parents in the town of Brieskow-Finkenheerd in former communist east Germany. Hey, recycling is a mitigating circumstance, isn't it?
Hilschenz gave birth to nine babies - two boys and seven girls - between 1988 and 1998. She was also accused of killing the first of the nine babies, born in 1988, but the lower court ruled that the time in which she could be charged in connection with that death had lapsed. Doesn't count!
Hilschenz divorced her husband, who was believed to have worked for the feared East German secret police, the Stasi, in 2005 after years of marital strife. The couple have three surviving children and the court heard that he had not wanted any more. Got tired of all the recycling, did he? Could have just used a compost bin or something.
He declined to testify in the trial, but a separate investigation has been launched into his role in the affair. Should have killed her long ago. Statue of limitations would have run out by now. But maybe they can nail him on littering or something.
Ma'an Exclusive A woman allegedly burned her 72-year-old mother-in-law to death in the West Bank village of Halhul on Saturday, police in the nearby city of Hebron told Ma'an. Police sources said that the 32-year-old woman struck her mother-in-law on the head in the bathroom before pouring kerosene on her, setting her ablaze, and leaving her in the house alone. "After we seized the suspect, she admitted to killing her mother in law after they quarreled as the mother in law attempted to prevent her daughter in law from going out," said the deputy director of Hebron police, Ramadan Awad.
Awad said that the woman left the house briefly before returning and killing her mother-in-law. A firefighter who helped put out the fire said, "We were stunned to see a woman lying on the ground in the bathroom with her skull demolished and her body burned."
