A train carrying toxic fuel from Madison, Illinois to Conway, Pennsylvania derailed on February 3 in Ohio, near the town of East Palestine
The EPA say the area is safe to return to but residents are reporting fish and chickens dying in large numbers, and some locals complain of coughs
Erin Brockovich, whose environmental crusade was turned into a Julia Roberts film, on Tuesday told residents their priority was taking care of their own health

Read a report yesterday of a lady's chickens dying up in North Lima, which is not all that close to the accident site. No authoritative proof that there's a connection at this point, but since COVID, who would trust any report put out about it either way?

Wow, I'm kind of impressed in a way that Daily Mail has someone on their staff who was like, "Hey, you know what we need? Erin Brockovich's take on this."
I'm not saying she's wrong, or that the True Covidians shouldn't put on their face diaper and go help clean up, its a long reach into the past with just Julia Roberts nevermind Erin Brockovich.

Who decided to ignite the toxic stuff and make it airborne? The Feds, the State, or the railroad?

Make a burn pit?
If FEMA didn't make the call, they were at table.
We gamed something similar, quite a bit smaller but so are we so I'd say to scale.
There should be a skeleton plan for something like this, if not an actual decision tree. Should be Go-No Go process for a burn, depending upon the ingredients. Should.

Without knowing the particulars, there are lose-lose big scenarios, and this could be one.
That said, I wouldn't return for a while, especially when the people making the call don't seem to have a grip on it - the Daily Mail picture of the two in some real basic Hazmat protection, yeah I saw your empty boots in the picture, changing in the fall out area really? - Boogie bag, turn the HVAC off and close the windows on the way to your cousin's for a week. Everything down wind of the boom and watershed is a hazmat scene.
And with Uncle Joe's story about how Beau died from brain cancer because of a knife fight with a Yeti next to a burn pit is a cornerstone of Uncle Joe's.....personality, you ain't gonna get it square.

Responding to those reports, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine told reporters that if he lived in East Palestine, “I’d be drinking the bottled water … I’d be alert and aware… but I think I’d be back in my home.”
Later, DeWine said that the controlled burn of materials on the train was deemed the best decision after he was told that chemicals on the train could trigger a catastrophic explosion.

They did a burn to avoid an explosion that can only seem to happen if water is sprayed on it: “Undergoes violent chemical change at elevated temperatures and pressures, reacts violently with water, or may form explosive mixtures with water (e.g. white phosphorus, potassium, sodium)”

[FOX] Biden never shuts up about trains ,and he told us he was going to cure cancer. And now a train goes off the tracks, they light it on fire, it’s probably going to give everybody cancer and the president calls a lid. They have the whole Ohio River contaminated. These chemicals are flowing downstream to West Virginia, and we haven’t declared a national emergency.
We declared a national emergency over monkeypox, and there’s no national emergency here? Biden was too scared of letting a single piece of debris from a balloon fall in Montana, but he’s okay with cancerous chemicals in our rivers. I mean, if not Joe, you’d think maybe Al Gore would be mad? No. Chemical catastrophe causing acid rain, dead fish.
How is Al not red in the face right now? Even Mayor Pete is in hiding, and he’s literally in charge of the railroad system. This thing’s so bad, even Ilhan Omar and "Jesse Watters Primetime" agree, the Squadster saying, "We need direct action from Pete."
But there’s a major cover-up happening. The rail company, Norfolk Southern, they’re doing whatever they want. When Norfolk Southern’s train spilled 500 tons of toxic chemicals all over Ohio, they said, "All right, guys, this is how we’re going to handle things. You know, this crime scene we have here? We’re just going to light it on fire." And the Biden administration and the Ohio government said, "OK, just throw a match on it, and we’ll say it’s safe."

With monkeypox, we could pretend to do something but a train derailment requires something more than a media campaign. You know, like actual cleanup work and stuff. And no, I'm not going to mention that time the EPA turned a Colorado river orange.
[FoxBusiness] The Biden administration on Monday announced another sale of oil from the Energy Department's Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), with 26 million barrels set to be delivered to the market from April 1 to June 30, which will take the number of barrels in the reserve to a new low dating back to 1983.
Unlike the largest-ever drawdown of the SPR that Biden announced in response to Russia's war in Ukraine, the latest release of 26 million barrels is in response to a requirement included in two laws enacted by Congress during the Obama administration under the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 and the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act. The announcement comes ahead of a potential uptick in gas prices as the U.S. nears the summer driving season.
"Biden is front-loading SPR barrels to avoid a summer gasoline price spike," said Phil Flynn, analyst at Price Futures Group and FOX Business Network contributor. "There are growing concerns among the Biden administration that gas prices are headed back to $4 a gallon and the president is fearful of the political heat he will have to take."
When Biden took office in January 2021, the SPR contained 638 million barrels out of a congressionally authorized maximum capacity of 713 million barrels. After a series of releases totaling more than 260 million barrels, the SPR is at about 371.6 million barrels as of February 2023 — the lowest level since December 1983, according to data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA). Selling another 26 million barrels from the SPR without adding new barrels of oil to offset the decline would take the SPR inventory to about 346 million barrels, which would be the lowest level since August 1983.
Lawmakers from both parties have used SPR sales as a means to finance spending proposals — often through mandates that the sales occur years in the future as was the case for this sale. Presidents have also regularly tapped the SPR to provide short-term relief for gas prices.
However, the sizable decline in the number of barrels contained during the SPR has made lawmakers balk at further reductions and the bipartisan omnibus spending bill that Congress passed in December canceled mandated sales of about 140 million barrels that were going to occur in fiscal years 2024 through 2027.

Biden promised that he would refill the Reserve at a lower price than his selling price to the Chinese. He would have to stop throttling our production capacity to do that. As a shiester, Joe is all dump and no pump.

[FoxNews] Hunter Biden boasted about having a "very good relationship" with President Obama's ambassador to China prior to his business associates arranging multiple meetings with him, according to a review of emails from Hunter’s infamous abandoned laptop that have been verified by Fox News Digital.
Less than two months after former Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., was sworn in by then-Vice President Biden as the U.S. ambassador to China in late February 2014, Hunter and his business associates at BHR Partners began arranging meetings with Baucus.
BHR Partners, a Beijing-backed private equity firm controlled by Bank of China Limited, was formed in late 2013 when Jimmy Bulger’s Boston-based Thornton Group LLC joined forces with Hunter’s now-defunct Rosemont Seneca to launch its joint-venture with Chinese investment firm Bohai Capital.
On April 2, 2014, Hunter’s business partner, BHR co-founder Devon Archer, said in an email to Alwen Liu of Bohai Capital that he was "currently arranging a meeting with the new US Ambassador to China Max Baucus for late April / early May to meet our leadership team in Beijing."
Archer was eventually forced to resign from his BHR positions after reports came out in May 2016 that he was under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department and the SEC for his role in defrauding a Native American tribe, for which he was later sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison.
On April 21, 2014, Hunter Biden sent an email to Archer insisting that he was really close with Baucus and "can ask anything we need" after Archer said he had an upcoming dinner with the then-ambassador’s "best friend."

trains carrying certain dangerous chemicals to utilize electronically controlled pneumatic (ECP) brakes
ECP brakes will not prevent a melting roller bearing accident, nor did the $5 billion federally-mandated "Positive Train Control" system recently completed at railroad expense.

[FoxNews] California Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who has represented the Golden State in the U.S. Senate since 1992, announced Tuesday that she will not seek re-election in 2024.
"I am announcing today I will not run for reelection in 2024 but intend to accomplish as much for California as I can through the end of next year when my term ends," Feinstein said in a statement.
Feinstein, the longest-serving female senator ever, is also the oldest sitting senator at age 89.
From October to December 2022, filings from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) revealed Feinstein raised a mere $558.91.
Ahead of Feinstein's announcement, a handful of House Democrats announced they would run for her seat in the 2024 election.
Both Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Rep. Katie Porter, D-Calif., announced their bids for Feinstein's Senate seat last month. Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., is also expected to announce later this month that she will run for the seat.

I don't think Donk voters will get a 'choice' other than what the party central committee wants since they control the ballot system. It will be an opportunity to separate more money from the thieving* neo-aristocracy though.

A multi-volume chronology and reference guide set detailing three years of the Mexican Drug War between 2010 and 2012.
Rantburg.com and borderlandbeat.com correspondent and author Chris Covert presents his first non-fiction work detailing
the drug and gang related violence in Mexico.
Chris gives us Mexican press dispatches of drug and gang war violence
over three years, presented in a multi volume set intended to chronicle the death, violence and mayhem which has
dominated Mexico for six years.
Rantburg was assembled from recycled algorithms in the United States of America. No
trees were destroyed in the production of this weblog. We did hurt some, though. Sorry.
