Why just now?
Oh, yeah.
An election.

Gudelia Vallinas was killed in the crossfire between rival gangs in March 2021
NYPD launched a two-year operation which seeks to bring the gangs to justice
Almost two dozen New York City gang members have been rounded up as part of a huge NYPD operation launched after a mom-of-two was killed by a stray bullet amid a brazen street shoot-out two years ago.
The gangsters, described by authorities as some of the 'most dangerous' in the Big Apple, belong to two factions of the Crips whose alliance broke apart amid a drug deal back in 2018.
In March 2021, members of the 'Rolling Crips' - a.k.a. the 'Hip Hop Boys' - and the '8 Trey Crips' - a.k.a. the 'True Cash Gettas' - were locked in a brutal gunfight in the Woodside housing projects in Queens.
The gang members were chasing and shooting at each other through Woodside houses when they shot 37-year-old Gudelia Vallinas, who lived a few blocks away on 48th Street.
Vallinas, an immigrant from Mexico, was walking home from the grocery store when she suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital.
The needless slaying of the innocent mother-of-two sparked a two-year investigation into the warring Crips factions, which ultimately led to a huge bust of 23 gang members last week.
The majority of the defendants were arraigned on an eye-watering 85-count indictment which included charges of conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon.
At a press conference yesterday, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz was joined by NYC Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell to celebrate the bust.
The Department's annual round-up of crime over the past year was published in January and it revealed that crime is up in virtually every category.
The statistics paint a bleak picture of the city's efforts to address crime that's rocketed since the pandemic - a campaign that has been touted as successful several times over the past year by Mayor Eric Adams.
However, statistics show the politician - who ran on promises of addressing violence on the city's streets and is now entering his second year as mayor - was mistaken.
The data, released by the department Wednesday, Jan 4, came exactly two weeks after Adams assured citizens that officials had taken strides in the unrest, while touting supposed gains in public safety.
Adams, who himself is a former NYPD police captain, unveiled his 'Blueprint to End Gun Violence' early last year, along with a 'Subway Safety Plan' - both of which have so far proved largely ineffective, according to the new statistics.
The data shows that rapes, robberies, and assaults are all up from last year, since hitting highs not seen in decades in both 2020 and 2021.
Rape - which rocketed in 2020 when streets were empty and unemployment rife due to unrest caused by the coronavirus - rose by 7 percent, with more than 120 occurring this year than last.
Robberies, meanwhile, rose a shocking 20 percent, despite recent measures taken by Adams, 62, to increase police presence throughout the city.
Assaults and theft throughout the city, meanwhile, show a similarly pronounced rise, with felony assaults up 12 percent - 26,039 incidents this year compared to 22,835 seen last year - and burglaries up an alarming 25 percent.
All other crime categories - including grand larceny and motor vehicle theft - showed similar rises except for murders, despite the outset of the pandemic coming now nearly three years ago.
The statistics directly contradict repeated statements from Adams that New York - which saw incidents of violence and shootings swell to historic highs in 2020 when its streets were hollowed out by lockdowns - was well on the path to recovery, the most recent of which came just last month.

^Yea, Bail. Whatever. Bring-em in let-em out. These gangs are their family. Anywhere you have Crips, bloods or M-13s in prison or on the streets you have war. Gang life is all they know.

PAKISTANI POLICE SEARCH HOSTELS IN ISLAMABAD – Several reports came in from the Afghan refugee community about searches that were taking place in East Islamabad. Several hostels commonly frequented by Afghans living in Pakistan received visits from Pakistani police officers. The officers arrived at night and would ask the desk clerks how many Afghans were staying in the hostels and if they had checked their visas when they registered to stay. The officers did not make any arrests but said they would return in 24 hours to question some of the guests. It is not clear if these operations are related to TTP threats but at-risk Afghans should take care to keep their documents with them. If an at-risk Afghan has an expired visa, they should be ready to produce the electronic copy of their extension application or the stamped paper slip provided by SHARP for their UNHCR interviews.
MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE ISIS-K SECURITY OPERATION IN KABUL – Several sources within the Taliban say the operation was carried out to disrupt an ISIS-K cell that had targeted one (or several) foreign diplomatic embassies in Kabul. Among some of the evidence collected after the clash was a document, with Russian writing on it, and a pencil sketch of a doorway. The sources said the doorway did not match any portal known at the Russian embassy. It was not clear if the operation was successful in neutralizing the team that may have been targeting a diplomatic facility as they did not find evidence of the large ammonium-nitrate bomb that has long been rumored to have been prepared to destroy an embassy. The sources confirmed that GDI agents and police continued looking for a second ISIS-K cell and disputed an earlier Taliban announcement that the threat had been dealt with.
SHIITE SHRINE CLOSED IN KABUL – The famous Shia shrine, Ziyarat Sakhi, has been closed down due to “sacrilege” and “immoral acts”. Employees of the popular pilgrimage site said the Taliban told them that polytheistic acts that included “kissing science” had been reported and the site would be closed until further notice.
CONFLICT TRACKER Kunar: A TTP commander (Shamsher Mohammad) was reputedly targeted by an IED un the Sarkani district. 6 people were killed in the blast, including a child. No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

US-PAKISTAN SECURITY COOPERATION MEETING IN PAKISTAN TO START – A high-ranking US delegation will meet with Pakistani officials to discuss mutual cooperation and other agenda items. The bilateral talks will also discuss Taliban-administered Afghanistan. While the locations of the talks have been kept secret it is possible that TTP or other terror networks could attempt to target meetings. It is even more likely that one of the terror groups will try to stage an attack to illustrate their resolve to the US delegation while it is in town. At risk-Afghans in Islamabad are advised to avoid government convoys and concentrations of police/military personnel as these may be likely targets.
[Dawn] Seven murderous Moslems of the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban ...the Pashtun equivalent of men... Pakistan (TTP) were killed when cops repulsed an attack on a police van carrying three detained murderous Moslems to Bannu from North Wazoo, the Counterterrorism Department (CTD) said on Tuesday.
The three detained murderous Moslems were also among those killed in the Monday night clash, the CTD said.
The CTD said its officials were shifting the three murderous Moslems from Miramshah to Bannu when they were ambushed on the Mir Ali Bypass Road, possibly by the holy warriors’ accomplices to free them from custody.
The police officials retaliated, killing four assailants, while five murderous Moslems managed to escape under cover of darkness. The CTD said the detainees inside the van had been killed due to the assailants’ fire. The exchange of fire severely damaged some police vehicles.
Six murderous Moslems killed in the attack were identified as Mehruddin, Abadur Rehman, Arshaad Ullah, Noor Qabil, Ashraf Ullah and Rifat Ullah. The identity of one attacker could not be immediately ascertained.
The holy warriors, which according to the CTD were affiliated with the TTP, had been involved in several assassinations, including that of constable Iftikhar. They were also involved in many hand grenade attacks on security forces and police, including the one on the Cantonment cop shoppe, the CTD said.
Four sub-machine guns along with cartridges and other arms were recovered from the holy warriors’ possession.
Heavy contingents of police and security forces rushed to the site following the clash and launched a search operation in the area.
Separately, a policeman was injured after murderous Moslems attacked a checkpoint with sophisticated weapons in Dera Ismail Khan ... the Pearl of Pashtunistan ... , a police spokesperson said on Tuesday.
Syed Yaqoob Bukhari, a spokesperson for the Dera Ismail Khan police, told Dawn that unidentified murderous Moslems stormed the Khutti checkpoint late on Monday within the limits of Dera Town Police Station on Dera-Zhob Road.
The police retaliated the attack, which led to an exchange of fire for some time. The murderous Moslems fled from the scene and no casualties were reported, the police said.
However, there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly... a police constable, identified as Kamran, was injured in the incident, the police said. He was immediately shifted to the District Headquarters Teaching Hospital in Dera Ismail Khan.
As soon as the incident was reported, District Police Officer Muhammad Shoaib Khan along with a heavy contingent of police reached the spot and a search operation was started in the area to trace the assailants.

[IsraelTimes] Military says Mahmoud al-Aydi, 17, shot while approaching forces with explosive in hand; troops come under fire near Homesh outpost
A Paleostinian teenager was killed in the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday as Israeli troops carried out arrest raids in a northern West Bank refugee camp, Paleostinian health officials said.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, troops detained two wanted Paleostinian in the Faraa refugee camp near the northeastern city of Tubas, when a suspect approached troops with an bomb.
The IDF said troops shot up the Paleostinian, adding that he was hit.
The Paleostinian Authority Health Ministry said 17-year-old Mahmoud al-Aydi was fatally struck in the head by the soldiers’ bullets.
The camp is home to a recently formed gang affiliated with the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad ...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah... terror group.
Images circulating online showed al-Aydi posing with an assault rifle. However, there's more than one way to stuff a chicken... no armed factions immediately claimed him as a member.
The IDF said troops detained another 21 terror suspects and seized several firearms in other areas of the West Bank during the overnight raids, with violent mostly peaceful incidents occurring in some areas.
Paleostinian button men opened fire overnight from a passing vehicle at a military checkpoint guarding the illegal Homesh outpost, near the northern West Bank city of Nablus, the IDF said.
No soldiers were hurt in the drive-by attack, and troops found several shell casings nearby, the military added.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
Always many opportunities for wrongdoing around prisons.
[IsraelTimes] Officer suspected of being bribed by brother of Wail Nairat, convicted of carrying out 2004 bombing of Qalandiya Checkpoint that killed 2
A guard at Ramon Prison in southern Israel is being investigated for allegedly smuggling phones to a convicted terrorist serving a life sentence for a deadly attack, police said on Tuesday.
The guard, an Ofakim resident in his 30s, was questioned by police over suspicions that he smuggled phones to Wail Nairat, who was part of a terror cell that carried out a deadly bombing attack on the Qalandiya Checkpoint in the West Bank on August 11, 2004, in exchange for bribes from the prisoner’s brother.
The attack on the checkpoint killed two Paleostinian men, Ayid Mustafa Abed Raba Daghr and Saleh Rashid Abu Sneina, and injured several Border Police officers.
Nairat is kept in a separate security wing because he poses a danger to other prisoners and personnel, the Israel Prison Service said.
In addition to the questioning, police reportedly searched the suspect’s home and locker at the prison on Tuesday morning.
According to reports, police believed this is not the first time Nairat’s brother has attempted to smuggle phones to prisoners. He was arrested recently in connection to the case.
Police battle to prevent security prisoners from gaining access to phones to prevent them from conducting criminal activities or coordinating terror activities from the inside.
In 2017, Basel Ghattas, a former MK, was tossed in the calaboose Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit! for smuggling cellphones to security prisoners while he was serving as a politician for the Joint List, an Arab party. Footage from a Prison Service surveillance camera showed the politician passing envelopes to prisoners at Ketziot Prison in the south.
