TALIBAN CALL FOR A THREE-NATION MEETING ON REFUGEE ISSUES – Khalil Rahman Haqqani, Minister for Refugees and Repatriation has called for a meeting with Iran and Pakistan to find a solution for the problem of refugees from Afghanistan. A source in the Ministry of Defense said a recommendation for talks had actually come from Iran initially but Turkey may also send a representative to any forthcoming summit.
TTP KILLS 3 POLICE IN KHYBER DISTRICT – Several militants struck a police outpost with guns and a suicide bomber which resulted in the deaths of 3 police. The militants struck the facility in a nighttime coordinated attack and at least 4 militants were involved. The suicide bomber detonated his device and was killed in the attack while the others escaped. The TTP claimed that only the suicide bomber was involved in the attack but several eyewitness accounts supported Pakistan’s statement on the matter. It is not clear if the militants had launched their attack from Afghanistan.
PRISONERS RELEASED FROM NANGARHAR JAIL BY SUPREME LEADER – Nearly 70 prisoners were freed from the Jail in Nangarhar yesterday. The head of the appeals court cited a recent decree by the Supreme Leader that called for freeing persons who had been convicted of minor offenses and/or who had received forgiveness from the victims of their crimes. There were 11 children and 5 women in the group. The jail superintendent said that 1,100 prisoners remain in the jail and that 65 were children and 50 were women.
THE UN CONTINUES TO HOLD THE LINE WITH THE TALIBAN – A few misleading articles in Taliban-affiliated news outlets attempted to give the impression that visiting officials from the United Nations had pledged to advocate on the regime’s behalf for recognition and a return of several billion dollars of frozen funds. To their credit, the UN delegates continually stressed the conditions that would need to be met before engagement could proceed. UNAMA, under badly needed new leadership, has impressed many with its skill at the negotiating table.
CONFLICT TRACKER Takhar: A vehicle that exploded near the governor’s office Thursday afternoon was targeted by the NRF. 2 Taliban are thought to have been killed and 2 others were wounded. Reports differ over whether the mine was attached to a Taliban vehicle or the vehicle had a device placed in it and was parked near a checkpoint, The Taliban have acknowledged the incident but provided no additional details.
NEXT 24 HOURS
TAKHAR SECURITY OPERATIONS EXPECTED – A source in Kabul said that Taliban forces in Takhar have received information about further threats from NRF forces in the Province. To preempt any potential attacks, they intend to conduct home searches in Taloqan. The searches are expected to concentrate in neighborhoods on the North and South banks of the Khanabad river, near the Taloqan bridge. There is also a plan to set up a new security checkpoint along the road to Takhar University. Local Taliban security forces are reportedly looking for a cache of magnetic mines, 2 IEDs (mortar shells), and small arms. They believe the NRF operatives who carried out yesterday’s bomb attack have not departed.
[ShabelleMedia] The SNA clashed with al-Shabaab ...... the personification of Somali state failure... on the outskirts of Baidoa, the interim seat of Southwest State on Thursday as the Somali president visits the region.
The skirmish started following an ambush attack against the army base in Goofgaduud, a small town that lies 30 kilometers away from Baidoa, according to the local residents.
The two sides engaged heavy and small weapons during the battle that inflicted losses on the SNA forces and al-Shabaab krazed killers.
Southwest State’s justice minister Hassan Abdulkadir Mohammed who was in the area at the time of the attack said al-Shabaab faced army resistance and lost a number of fighters.
Mohammed confirmed that at least 20 al-Shabaab krazed killers, including leading commanders, have been neutralized and battle vehicles destroyed in the SNA’s counter-attack
The regional justice minister said the army lost three soldiers who were at the base that came under an al-Shabaab attack in the morning.
The SNA base raid comes days after Somali president Hassan Sheikh speaking at the Baidoa reconciliation conference said on Tuesday that 2nd phase of the anti-al-Shabaab operation will start soon in Southwest State.
[Garowe] The National Intelligence Security Agency [NISA] in coordination with the Somali National Army [SNA] eliminated over 40 al-Shabaab ...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord... bully boys, state media reported, in the latest operation targeting the bully boys, who have been engaging in retaliatory attacks across the country.
According to state media, the operation by the multi-agency security forces targeted the gunnies across Farabaako area, just south of Xawaadley in central Somalia. The operation was activated a day after Tuesday's attack against civilians in the village, a move which was seen as a provocation.
State media noted that besides the death of over 40 al-Shabaab bully boys, the al-Qaeda-linked group also has their anti-aircraft twin-barreled autocannon [ZU] destroyed during the sophisticated operation against the bully boys.
"Over 40 Alshabab bad boyz were potted and anti-aircraft twin-barreled autocannon [ZU] destroyed in a joint operation carried by Somali National Army and NISA in the farmlands near Hawadley village in Middle Shabelle with support of Somalia’s international security partners," state media noted.
Reports indicate that Somalia's international partners were involved in the crackdown. For the last seven months, the US Africa Command, the African Union ...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful... Transition Mission in Somalia [ATMIS] and the local militia have been directly engaging in operations against al-Shabaab across the country.
So far, casualty figures have not been independently confirmed, but al-Shabaab usually disputes the numbers given by the government after such operations. Photos by state media show troops operating in the area, targeting some of the areas which have not been combed for the sake of civilians.
The country has increased the intensity against the al-Shabaab extortionists across the country, targeting even their revenue sources. Recently, over 250 bank accounts and 70 mobile money transfer firms were closed over close association with the al-Shabaab group.
[ShabelleMedia] Kenyan security forces on Wednesday killed 10 al-Shabaab ...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord... gunnies in Garissa county in the northeastern region.
Northeastern Regional Police Commander George Seda said the multi-agency security team conducted an intelligence-led operation on the al-Shabaab hideout at Degbon after trailing the bandidosDeath Eaters for a week.
"The multi-agency team also recovered weapons including rocket-propelled grenades (RPG), AK-47 rifles, and improvised bomb materials," Seda said in a security report.
He said the killing of the bandidosDeath Eaters followed a tip-off from residents, adding that the operation was ongoing and would not divulge much.
Other officials said multi-agency teams are on the ground pursuing more targets hiding in the area and expansive Boni Forest which the gunnies have been using as their hideout place.
The move came days after the terrorist group conducted attacks in the area killing more than 10 people.
The Death Eaters were behind the recent attack and killing of four engineers working with Kenya National Highways Authority.
Al-Shabaab faceless myrmidons have been attacking places in the region, especially in Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa counties in northeastern Kenya after breaching security zones, which left dozens of civilians and security officials dead and maimed.
The Kenya Defense Forces [KDF] has killed over 18 al-Shabaab ...... the personification of Somali state failure... bully boyz following a coordinated operation in Garissa near the border, just days after President William Ruto urged security operatives to remain vigilant along the mostly non-existent border of Kenya and Somalia.
George Seda, the northeastern regional police commander said the operation was activated by multi-agency security forces coordinated by the Kenya Defense Forces following intelligence reports about the movements of the troops along the border which had been under closure for months.
The exact location of operation took place at Degabon village where the bully boyz have been hiding for several weeks. Reports indicate intelligence has been trailing the bully boyz for several months after locals made complaints to the local administration teams.
"The multi-agency team also recovered weapons including rocket-propelled grenades [RPG], AK-47 rifles, and improvised bomb materials," Seda said in a security report, which was shared with members of the media and security teams.
Seda lauded locals for sharing intelligence about the presence of the bad boys, noting that the fight against al-Shabaab is collective. " We must be vigilant and locals have confirmed as such through their tips. We are grateful for such commitment," he noted.
Other officials said multi-agency teams are on the ground pursuing more targets hiding in the area and expansive Boni Forest which the bully boyz have been using as their hideout place. The al-Shabaab has been on the run from neighboring Somalia where security operations are active.
For the last seven months, Somalia has been pursuing the bully boyz with the help of foreign troops key among them the US Africa Command, the African Union ...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful... Transition Mission in Somalia [ATMIS], and the local militia. A number of bully boyz have been crossing over to Kenya, thus the security alerts.
Kenya has been able to contain al-Shabaab for the longest periods since the bully boyz launched a devastating attack on the Dusit D2 Hotel complex in 2019 at the capital Nairobi. However, there's more than one way to stuff a chicken... the bully boyz have been carrying sporadic retaliatory attacks in Garissa, Mandera, and Wajir counties.
Follow up to this story from yesterday. It turns out they are Antifa, after all. See also here.
[Ace of Spades] Four have been charged with domestic terrorism in the shootout with police.
Antifa staged violent protests (do they do any other kind?) to block the construction of a police facility in Atlanta. When cops attempted to clear them out, they opened fire, seriously wounding a cop. The cops returned fire and killed an antifa thug.
Now antifa is calling for "reciprocal violence."
All of these people will be out on bail faster than any January 6th grandmother arrested for "parading."
Four militants have been arrested and charged with domestic terrorism following a deadly shootout with law enforcement at their "autonomous zone" in a wooded area south of Atlanta.
On Wednesday morning, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and other law enforcement agencies conducted a raid on the so-called autonomous zone at the site of the future Atlanta Public Safety Training Center. Since June 2021, Antifa and other far-left extremists from across the US have occupied the area to prevent the construction of what they call a "cop city." The GBI says a Georgia State Patrol trooper was shot and severely injured during Wednesday's raid by a man camped in the area. Officers returned fire and killed the gunman, who allegedly used a pistol.
Georgia's Department of Public Safety will not name the injured patrol trooper, saying it would "compromise security against criminal or terroristic acts due to retaliation," but told local media he was in the ICU after having emergency surgery. The deceased gunman was named by a propaganda media group for the forest autonomous zone as Manuel "Tortuguita" Teran. The GBI would not confirm the man's legal name pending next of kin notification.
"Manuel used they/it pronouns..."
Of course they/it does. Antifa is lousy with they/its.
And pedophiles. Half of antifa is registered child molesters.
No wonder the Democrat Party protects them.
"... please make sure we are remembering them properly and respectfully," announced the Atlanta Community Press Collective in their statement revealing the shooter's identity.
Following the shooting, the GBI and its law enforcement partners continued to clear the autonomous zone and several arrests were made of suspects--all of whom are from out of state.
Remember, Christopher Wray insists they are a "loosely-associated" group, not a national terrorist organization.
...Filler Distro tweeted a call for "retaliation" against police with further instructions from extremist account "Scenes from the Atlanta Forest." .The now-suspended account, which posts blogs from writers at the autonomous zone, wrote: "Consider this a call for reciprocal violence to be done to the police and their allies. On Friday, January 20th, wherever you are, you are invited to participate in a night of rage in order to honor the memory of our fallen comrade." The post was shared hundreds of times before the account was suspended.
Antifa groups around the country -- remember, this isn't a national organization, just a series of "loosely-affiliated ideological groups" that present no threat -- are calling for violence against cops.
Radical Antifa-associated leftists are calling for retaliation after one of their grunts was killed in an incident with police, near the "Cop City" occupying grounds where the Atlanta Police Department Training Facility is set to be built.
"Consider this a call for reciprocal violence to be done to the police and their allies. On Friday, January 20th, wherever you are, you are invited to participate in a night of rage in order to honor the memory of our fallen comrade," the Scenes from the Atlanta Forest Twitter account tweeted.
Joe Biden continues refusing to condemn antifa, and Christopher Wray continues refusing to call them a major domestic violence threat. Wray gives Biden the excuse for that by claiming that antifa isn't an organization but just a "loosely-associated ideological cluster" or whatever bullshit he uses to protect them.
Two points: 1, "white supremacists" and "right-wing domestic terrorist groups" are obviously not "centrally controlled movements" and yet the FBI has made them public enemy number one. Why is that antifa must be tightly centrally controlled for the FBI to take seriously as a domestic threat, while it does not impose this restriction on the Democrats' favorite bugaboo groups?
2, it sure looks like antifa is more centrally organized than the criminal Wray admits:
Breaking: Far-left groups are calling for deadly vengeance against police as payback for one of their comrades getting shot dead near the #Atlanta autonomous zone. They link to their list of @ga_dps officers & other cops they want to be murdered. #Antifahttps://t.co/K4o4TRlDgBpic.twitter.com/bVgLrDNdb5

If they were a threat, the FBI would be all up in their asses.
But they're not. They're a loosely allied force of destruction for the deep state. The same ones who want an eternal war in Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan, and all the other places we don't even know about.
However the FBI *is* trying to hurt us, the right. That means we're an actual threat. When you've got a situation like that, the threat has to be an actual threat so that they'll look at the non-threatening side and say, "Hmm, better negotiate with them, those, the threatening ones will literally kill us." And that's why we need to be the threat they imagine that we are.

Time for the Atlanta police to have a severe case of "blue flu".
The results might be a "learning experience" for the citizens of Atlanta.

I wonder who gave the go-ahead here. I assume Antifa is tightly associated with some faction in the Democratic coalition that controls their money--and is able to rein them in (at least so far) when politically expedient. My skill at kremlinology is too poor for me to guess who.

(Sigh) Inflection point reached. Been warning about this since 2016 but here we are. James asks the important question - "Who gave the order?". Now, we have BLMs armed militia organzing to demand reparations at gun point and there is no...NO resistence. This is all coordinated. For previous examples look to how Berkeley CA, Portland OR and Seattle WA have been coordinating for years. Then, social media and internet providers stepped in and crushed the Patriot groups and Proud Boys so now there is no organized defense against what is happening. We are now on our own, right where they wanted all of us. We're gonna see lots of armed Leftist groups heading into 2024.

With access to Elon Musk’s Twitter archives and that relationship program DoD used in Iraq (and also Afghanistan?), all of the connected Black Bloc cadres could be rounded up by the authorities in a month. It won’t happen under a Democratic president, though.
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] The usual Daily Mail collection of photos of the parties involved, and also solid journalism digging up who those people are and what they’ve been up to, following up on this story from yesterday. See also here.
Manuel Esteban Paez Teran, 26, was killed during a shootout in Atlanta
Teran was shot after allegedly opening fire at a Georgia State Patrol trooper
The Wednesday crossfire was at the future Atlanta Public Safety Training Center
Seven others were charged with domestic terrorism and criminal trespass
The man killed during a deadly shootout at Atlanta's 'cop city' has been identified as Manuel Esteban Paez Teran, 26 and seven others were slapped with domestic terrorism and criminal trespass charges.
The 26-year-old was shot dead after allegedly opening fire at a Georgia State Patrol trooper during a 'clearing operation' of the so-called autonomous zone
...those Antifa types are awfully fond of taking control of a part of the city landscape that they don’t actually own...
at the site of a future $90 million Atlanta Public Safety Training Center on Wednesday.
Since June 2021, Antifa and other far-left extremists from across the US have occupied the area to prevent the construction of what they've dubbed 'cop city.'
During the multi-agency operation GBI said approximately 25 campsites were located and removed from the site.
Additionally, mortar style fireworks, multiple edged weapons, pellet rifles, gas masks, and a blow torch were recovered.
Three people contacted in connection with the materials were asked to provide their names to authorities and then let go.
Seven others were arrested and charged with domestic terrorism and criminal trespass, with additional charges pending. They include:
Geoffrey Parsons, age 20, of Maryland
Timothy Murphy, age 25, of Maine
Spencer Bernard Liberto, age 29, of Pennsylvania
Matthew Ernest Macar, age 30, of Pennsylvania
Sarah Wasilewski, age 35, of Pennsylvania
Christopher Reynolds, age 31, of Ohio
Teresa Shen, age 31, of New York
Shen is an alumna of the Manhattan liberal arts institution Barnard College, while Macar graduated with a master's degree in international affairs from Penn State University in 2016, according to networking site linkedin.
Liberto and Wasilewski appear to be in a relationship based on social media photos and posts, and seem to have a long history of left leaning politics.
Wasilewski's Twitter account shows she follows some Antifa groups and the '@defendatlantaforest' account, which is the main social media group representing the autonomous zone.
She has also appeared to frequently like posts from far-left extremist Pittsburgh group, Filler Distro.
Filler Distro is one of several groups calling for violent retribution against law enforcement over the death of one of its members.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp also commented on the shooting and said he and his family were praying for law enforcement officers.
Some 'anonymous' members of the Atlanta Forest Defenders appeared in an Open Society Foundations-sponsored story about the autonomous zone in The Guardian.
George Soros is the chairman of the OSF and has given away more than $32billion of his personal fortune to fund the group.
In May, eight militants were arrested after police patrolling the area were assaulted and pelted with rocks and Molotov cocktails.
Five people were arrested on December 13 for allegedly plotting terror attacks at the soon-to-be police academy.
Serena Hertel, 25, of California, Leonard Voiselle, 20, of Macon, Georgia, Nicholas Dean Olson, 25, of Bennington, Nebraska, Francis M. Carroll, 22, of Kennebunkport, Maine and Arieon Robinson, 21, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, were arrested.
DailyMail.com previously revealed that Carroll is the son of surgeon Dr Mike Carroll and grew up in a $2million five-bedroom and four-bathroom mansion in Kennebunkport – as well as enjoying time on his parents' yacht.
Left-wing groups used Twitter to fundraise bail for the suspects after another six were arrested in August – charged with various crimes from burglary to criminal damage.
Members of the group tried to burn a man to death after he drove into the area.
After its members were arrested the Defend the Atlanta Forest group held a protest outside of Dekalb County Jail and let off explosive fireworks.
The Atlanta Jail Support, a project of the Atlanta Solidarity Fund, also issued calls to fundraise bail money for the terror suspects using Twitter.
Convictions of domestic terrorism carry with it sentences of anywhere between five and 35 years in prison.

What's obvious here is Antifa's ability to coordinate across state borders, up to and including armed confrontations with LE. I'm sure there's a legal term for this that escapes me at the moment. For their part, the Right no longer has such capability to organize. Social media and internet providers removed and banned nearly all groups containing the single word "patriot". We have ID'd and isolated while the enemy moves about freely. Not a favorable situation. What follows is predictable.

Four Kurdish people, including three women, were killed and another was injured in an armed attack in the city of Mardin, in southeastern Turkey.
Unknown gunmen opened fire on the family’s car at dawn on Thursday. The five victims are from Amedi, in the Duhok Governorate of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), according to a local media outlet.
Hours later, Kurdistan Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani, denounced the attack, and called on Turkey to reveal the motives behind it and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
He also offered his sincere condolences to the victims’ relatives.
The reasons behind the attack are still unknown, though the Kurdish-majority regions of Turkey have periodically witnessed racist attacks against Kurds.
The victims’ car carried a Duhok registration plate, suggesting it was “systematically targeted.”

“B - but is he dead, Dr. Quincy?”
“Oh! Yes, of course he’s dead, Jim. When they’re in pieces like this, the smart bet is that they’re dead. Give me a blank form D17933/KPTTP from the drawer over there — you can take that to the police sergeant to make it official.”
He said that a part of the checkpost was also damaged due to explosion of suicide jacket and grenade attack. He said that an extensive search operation was immediately launched in the surrounding localities jointly by police and counter-terrorism department personnel to trace and arrest the attackers, who managed to escape.

Officials said that the clash took place when a large police contingent raided the hideout of holy warriors in the dense forest locally called Darga.
"Terrorists fired at police with automatic weapons. They also used rocket launchers and other heavy weapons," they said. They added that the forest spreading over a vast area along the river was used by the holy warriors as safe haven.
Ihsanpur area is located on plain and saline lands between Gambila and Kurrum rivers. A bridge over the Gambila River links the area with Lakki Marwat city.
The trans-Kurrum river locality known as Kurrum Par area borders Karak and Mianwali districts where several terrorist attacks on police force had taken place in the recent months. Six coppers had embraced martyrdom when holy warriors attacked them in the Kurrm Par area two months ago.
Officials said that coppers were dispatched to the area on credible information about the presence of holy warriors in in the forest. They said that a police van was damaged in the attack by terrorists. "Policemen equipped with modern and heavy weapons also took positions and returned the fire bravely," they added.
They said that the coppers engaged the holy warriors until an additional contingent reached there to assist them. They said that security forces and commandos of Quick Response Force (QRF) also reached Ihsanpur area and took part in the operation against terrorists.
Officials said that the coppers and soldiers remained unhurt in the fierce shootout. "The law enforcers have besieged the forest and a search operation is under way," they said.

[IsraelTimes] Law enforcement says pair arrested at car wash near coastal city’s market following searches; officers seen seizing knife
Officers in the coastal city of Netanya arrested two Paleostinians illegally in Israel on suspicion they were planning to commit a terror attack, police said.
According to a police spokesperson, officers, including special forces, conducted searches for the pair near the city’s market, eventually finding them at a nearby car wash.
They were detained "on suspicion of involvement in an attempt to commit security offenses," the spokesperson said. A police sapper was also at the scene "to rule out concerns."
A passerby photographed a police officer holding a knife, apparently seized from one of the men or from the area they were arrested.
Police did not elaborate on the suspicions against the two Paleostinians.
They were handed over to the Shin Bet security agency for further questioning.
[IsraelTimes] Adham Jabareen, 28, was a commander in the terror group’s local wing, Jawad Bawaqta, 57, identified as teacher; military seizes weapons, kabooms in refugee camp.
Israeli troops clashed with Paleostinian button men during a raid in the West Bank city of Jenin early Thursday morning, with Paleostinian health officials reporting at least two killed, one of them a teacher.
The Israel Defense Forces said troops came under "massive gunfire" as they entered the Jenin refugee camp to arrest wanted Paleostinians. The IDF said the forces returned fire at the button men and at Paleostinians hurling bombs.
The fatalities were named by the Paleostinian Authority Health Ministry as Adham Jabareen, 28, and Jawad Bawaqta, 57.
Jabareen was identified as a commander in a local wing of the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad ...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah... , while Bawaqta was a teacher. The terror group said Bawaqta was providing Jabareen first aid after he was hit during the shootout.
The Jenin wing of PIJ claimed to have targeted Israeli troops in the city with gunfire and explosives.
The Rescuers Without Borders emergency service said two soldiers were lightly hurt after their jeep was targeted with an IED during the raid. One was taken to a hospital, while the other did not require further treatment, the service said. The IDF said the hospitalized soldier’s family was notified.
The IDF said troops seized several firearms, weapon parts, and kabooms in the camp during the raid, and arrested one person suspected of involvement in terror activities.
Paleostinian media said troops sought to arrest a senior PIJ member in the camp, Khaled Abu Zina, although he was not home at the time, and instead two of his sons were detained.
The IDF said nine more Paleostinians were arrested elsewhere across the West Bank overnight. They were all taken to be questioned by the Shin Bet security agency.
US forces and #SDF carry out an air assault in eastern Syria and capture an #ISIS official involved in facilitating the extremist group's operations in the region, says @CENTCOM. https://t.co/8iShwfAzpj
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Thursday that US forces, in cooperation with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), captured an ISIS official in a helicopter raid in eastern Syria a day earlier.
"U.S. Central Command forces partnered with Syrian Democratic Forces to conduct a partnered helicopter assault in eastern Syria on Jan. 18 capturing an ISIS Syrian provincial media and security operative," CENTCOM said in a blurb.
According to the statement, "The individual was involved in the planning and facilitation of ISIS operations in and outside of the region as well as global recruiting efforts."
The statement added that no casualties occurred during the assault.
"This operation reaffirms CENTCOM’s steadfast commitment to the region and the enduring defeat of ISIS," said Col. Joe Buccino, CENTCOM spokesperson.
Buccino added that ISIS still constitute a threat, noting that "CENTCOM maintains a sufficient and sustainable presence in the region and will continue to counter threats against regional security."
On Wednesday, the CENTCOM said that US forces and SDF would continue to reduce the number of residents at Hawl Camp, which houses about 50.000 family members of ISIS hard boys.
In late December, U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces announced ``Operation Al-Jazeera Thunderbolt'' , citing a surge in IS attacks, to target sleeper cells in the areas of al-Hol and Tal Hamis in the country's east.
CENTCOM did not identify the Syrian militant, but described the person as a ``provincial media and security operative'' who was involved in global recruitment and facilitating and planning operations for the group.
``The capture of this ISIS operative will disrupt the terrorist organization's ability to further plot and carry out global attacks threatening U.S. citizens, or partners and innocent civilians,`` CENTCOM spokesperson Col. Joe Buccino said.
There are roughly 900 U.S. troops in Syria, including in the north and farther south and east.
CENTCOM reported conducting some 313 operations against IS in 2022 in Syria and Iraq, mostly in cooperation with the Syrian Democratic Forces forces. According to a CENTCOM statement, 215 militants from the Islamic State group were arrested and 466 were killed in Syria.
