Paris Hilton avoids jail term under plea deal in drug possession case
(Xinhua) -- U.S. celebrity socialite Paris Hilton will avoid jail terms under a plea bargain reached with authorities and be placed on a year of probation, the Los Angeles Times reported on Saturday.

According to the plea deal, aside from pleading guilty to two misdemeanor charges -- drug possession and obstructing a police lieutenant, the 29-year-old must also complete a substance abuse program, pay a 2,000-U.S.-dollar fine and perform 200 hours of community service. The nature and location of the community service will be determined later.

If Hilton is arrested during her probation, she will have to serve a full year in jail, the plea agreement states.

Possibly. But I suspect it has more to do with her social standing and celebrity status than her state of domicile.

Now for a geo-political lesson:

Hollywood is in California.

But it is not "California"

Hence "California normal" is as ignorant a statement as Obama's infamous "clinging to guns and religion" remark.

Bhan Saeedabad faces severe inundation threats
[Dawn] Flood waters from Manchar Lake started to flow into Indus River as a 1500 feet breach was made in a protective embankment of Sehwan Larkana near Karampur village on Saturday.

Eight breaches created in Manchar Lake and a breach in the Main Nara Valley (MNV) drain could not be sealed, resulting in flood waters to flow towards the last embankment of Bhan Saeedabad at Indus link canal. As a result, the whole area was facing high level of flood.

Pakistan forces and civilians continued to strengthen the protective embankment, whereas 80 more villages of five union councils of Sehwan including Bhobakdal, Pakka Chana and Tilty were inundated. This brought the total number of villages inundated to 200.

Colombian drug lord caught in Venezuela
I'm shocked.
(Xinhua) -- A Colombian drug lord was jugged in a joint operation by Colombian and Venezuelan police on Friday.
No, really -- a joint operation with Venezuela captured what must be one of Presidente-reelected-yet-again Chavez's pet drug lords? This is shocking. Unless, of course, the drug lord did something to draw down upon his head el Presidente's wrath...
Didn't pay the vig, I take it ...
At a press conference in Margarita Island, Venezuela, Colombian Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera said in coordination with the Venezuelan authorities, the Colombian police captured Alberto Marin Zamora alias 'Beto Martin,' who was wanted by the United States.

The U.S. government had offered up to 5 million U.S. dollars for information leading to his capture, he said, adding the police have made three extraditable arrests this week.

Muslim women protest against push to ban burka in Australia
MUSLIM women have rallied in their hundreds to oppose moves to ban the burka in Australia, condemning the push as part of an orchestrated "war on Islam" in the West.

Women swathed in veils and wielding placards declaring "my burka - conviction not coercion" and "leave my mum alone - we love nikab" gathered yesterday in a park in Punchbowl, southwestern Sydney.

The first public protest against calls to ban the veil, the rally was co-ordinated by a coalition of Muslim groups known for their often hardline views.

The organisers included the Islamist political party, Hizbut Tahrir (Party of Liberation), which favours the creation of an Islamic caliphate, and the fundamentalist Ahlus Sunna wal Jamaah Association.

A female speaker, Umm Jamaal ud-Din, told the rally a ban proposed by Christian Democrat MP Fred Nile, which was due to be debated in the NSW parliament this month, had fuelled intolerance and bigotry.

"What this bill has effectively done is open the door to the racist element in Australian society, whereby some people think they have free rein to vilify, abuse and even physically assault women who wear the veil," she said.

"All it has done is create social unrest and discord, stir up intolerance and create a further divide between the Muslim community and our fellow Australians."

The head of the Lakemba-based United Muslims' Association, Shady Al Suleiman, thanked the leaders of the major political parties for their recent assurances that they would not support legislation to ban the veil, which has been advocated by Liberal senator Cory Bernardi.

Female speakers emphatically rejected claims that face-covering garments such as the burka and nikab symbolised the oppression of women.

Ms Jamal ud-Din, a mother of five and a seventh generation Australian, said she had been wearing the veil for 17 years. "Contrary to popular opinion, to me the face veil has everything to do with feminism," she said.

"I feel empowered by the knowledge that I am in control of displaying my beauty to whom I choose, and the fact that I can move freely throughout society without being subjected to the eyes of every Tom, Dick and Harry."

#1  It is foolish to get into the fashion regulation business. But it is also foolish to get into the intolerance management business. As long as people don't get violent, I have a hard time seeing the problem with intolerance. As long as people are willing to live with the reaction to their intolerance, they should have the right to be intolerant. I don't have a problem with No R--h---s or dogs need apply. It's a reflection on the employer. And if it's accepted, the society. But denying the employer or the society the right to express their opinion doesn't change their opinion. It only embitters it.

Right, until you can become sufficient in number at which point you and your men will make it a requirement for all of us.

Scariest thing in the world was having someone in a black niqab walk up to a group of schoolkids on a fieldtrip during all the boomer blasts and having no idea who or what was under it.

The ability to size people up and discern their intentions is a big part of the success of western civilization. The thought of women running around in niqab because they can't trust the men around them is to be greatly pitied.

Olde Tyme Religion
New Islamic ruling on singing stirs debate
[Al Arabiya] A religious ruling by the president of the International Union for Muslim Scholars, Dr. Yousef al-Qardhawi, permitting the singing of females stirred debate within Islamic religious circles where playing music and singing were perceived for long as forbidden by the Shariah law, the London-based Asharq al-Awsat newspaper reported.

Some Muslim scholars criticized Dr. Qaradhawi's fatwa saying that singing is forbidden and not only for women but for men as well, citing the music's effect on emotions and its potential to lead to what is perceived as sin. Dr. Abd al-Fatah Idris, an Islamic scholar from Egypt's Al-Azhar university, said "As a general rule, women's singing is forbidden, but there is no evidence that shows women cannot allow men to hear their voice while singing."

But Idris acknowledged that during the prophet's era a woman called Zainab used to sing for other women in weddings.

Started by the Air Force in 2004, BATMAN -- short for Battlefield Air Targeting Man-Aided kNowledge -- aims to modernize the gear that commandos take with them on covert missions.

"In the earliest stages when we were coming up with a name for the program, we were perceived as having a lot of gadgets," said Reggie Daniels, BATMAN program engineer at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. "[Batman's] devices allow him to have an advantage. That is what we're trying to do."

#3  The subversion campaign known as Civilization Jihad must not be confused with, or tolerated as, a constitutionally protected form of religious practice. Its ambitions transcend what American law recognizes as the sacrosanct realm of private conscience and belief. It seeks to supplant our Constitution with its own totalitarian framework.
--- The US has been subverting its own Constitution from within for quite some time.
--- Political correctness is a direct attack on 'sacrosanct' private conscience & belief. PC IS a totalitarian framework.
-- we must also preserve here at home
the system of government, laws, and freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution that many took oaths to “support and defend” that is now being targeted by those foreign and domestic enemies who seek our submission to shariah.
The US has a systemic problem not related to shariah.

It looks like some researchers have come close to nailing down one of the aspects of autism: A lack of regulation of some of the chemicals that transmit stimuli across nerve synapses.

Personally, I have always heard that some areas of the brains of autistics were shut down. Now I question that. How can individual areas be "shut down" if chemical processes are running rampant? How can it be that these rampant chemical processeses are confined to certain areas? Do certain areas of the brain hijack these processes and leave nothing for the rest of the brain? Is the rest of the brain starved of the chemicals necessary to pass along signals? Surely the brain has to have some spatial pattern to the signals it processes, but you would think that this kind of problem would screw things up so bad that there would be no hope whatsoever of anything recognizably rational. And then again, maybe this chemical imbalance somehow ends up being localized despite my intuition that this kind of problem should know no boundaries. Is this imbalance present even in the nerves in the rest of the body, leading to sound and touch sensitivities, etc.? Or are all those sensitivities related to problems in the brain? Could the high incidence of GI problems with autistics be related to nervous system problems?

It seems as though there are several drugs out there in Phase I or II clinical trials. This is one of them. It's called Arbaclofen, and it's related to a well-known drug called Baclofen.

Arbaclofen seems to be used for some GI problems, too.

[ Note: This article suggests backing off the drug can aggravate behavior to some degree. I don't know if it ends up worse than when it started or not. ]

Another article pointing at genes related to synaptic function. I don't know what the source is! :-) Scroll down a bit and check out the "related articles" section for some interesting titles.

A rash of new drugs on the way from several manufacturers.

#1  This is a complex subject, and its a long time since I studied neurotransmitters.

I will say that regulating the levels of neurotransmitters may well impact/mitigate specific autistic behaviours. However, this doesn't mean neurotransmitter levels are the cause of autism.

The problem is that modern medicine has 2 paradigms, the infectious disease paradigm and the chemical imbalance paradigm.

IMO, autism is primarily a learning disorder and this breakthrough will go the same way as the (biochemical) breakthroughs in treating schizophrenia I have been hearing about for 40 odd years, ie nowhere.
